15 hours left... and still can't sleep...

I think Diana, Fantasia, and LaToya will do great with their song choices.

If Jasmine could add a twist on the song, she could probably do it great... but if not, it will be most boring performance of the night.

George might endanger his status with his song. I fear for John if that song is true...

>Diana DeGarmo - R. G. G. Y. (upbeat)

Rhythm is Gonna Get You

>Fantasia Barrino - G. O. Y. F. (upbeat)

Get On Your Feet

>George Huff - C. O. O. T. D. (pop)

Coming Out Of The Dark

>LaToya London - D. W. L. Y. N. (ballad)

Don't Want to Lose You Now

>Jasmine Trias - H. W. A. (ballad)

Here We Are

>John Stevens - C. (upbeat)

Conga

Quick Thoughts:
- I don't see how John Stevens singing "Conga" can be anything but excrutiating.
- Excellent song choice for LaToya - this really suits her well.
- George and Jasmine made decent picks. After two weeks of George singing the completely wrong things, I could see him really nailing this one. Jasmine's choice fits her well, but if she tries to wail the ending, she could butcher it.

Are these song choices accurate or just guesses?? How would anyone know?? We did not get accurate song choices even after the show was on a taped delay basis the next night..

"Chances are..."
Posted by Goooey_Alley on 04-27-04 at 10:49 AM
that Jasmine's song is right 'cause her past performances (All That I Need, When I Fall In Love and I'll Never Love This Way Again) had been spoiled right after the result night.

There's a spoiler claiming that he had the same vocal coach with the contestants (or Jasmine alone.)

There's also a claim that LaToya will be singing Selena's Dreaming Of You... Hope she will.

I was doubting John's Conga since it could be way too inappropriate for his style and it's way too ambitious and challenging on his part.

As for the taped (Movie Night), there had been lots of DAW's from the official AI boards that kept the other readers confused and searching the real deal. Only few spilled the actual info and even made a clue for each performance.

Sometimes, these contestants have to change their songs for the last minute for copyright reason, availability or others... Even Paula end up givin' erroneous info's (e.i. Paula said that Big Band was the next theme and it became Elton John; and when she said that for the movie night, someone will be singing song from West Side Story, Grease Lightning, and Footloose.)

>Are these song choices accurate or just guesses??

I think you're right to be skeptical. Given how many times I've already said, "Please, if this is a benevolent universe, there's no way John Stevens would attempt Conga in public," I look at the list with a grain of salt. I just keep thinking this will make me wish that Willy Hung had made the finals, because this will probably fall into "She Bangs" territory.

But I like puzzles, so I did want to translate the initials.

I hate disagreeing with you Bebo, but I have the exact opposite reaction. Please, if there is a benevolent force in the universe, let JS sing Conga. And dance to it. Please. PLEASE.

Dweezil hon, that's your twisted side coming out, wanting to watch the train wreck. It's the same force I'm recognizing in myself. There's nothing benevolent about wanting to see something that degrading in public.

Will be amused all day picturing little Johnny dancing as he sings, "Come on, shake your body baby do that conga, I know you can't control yourself any longer..."

Trust me, no one is outeviling Me. Not happening.

I'm just not trying to kid the world that watching John Stevens shake his bon bon would ever happen in a benevolent universe. Some things are just too obvious.

Meanwhile, I'm just having My own special brand of fun painting mental pictures. For example, I know I'm not the only one who has voted John Stevens "Most Likely To Wear Black Socks With Sandals" out of the finalists.

I just wonder if this is his way of saying, "Please stop voting for me. I want to go home."

After Simon raked Clay over the coals last season for "Grease", I just know this is going to be even uglier. I picture Randy shaking his head and saying, "Dawg, what were you thinkin', dude?" And just imagine the painful expressions on Paula's face - she'll probably look like she's about to pass a kidney stone.

I wasn't going to watch tonight, but since this performance has train wreck written all over it, I can't help myself. It's like rubbernecking at a bad accident - you know you shouldn't look, but you just can't help it.

Maybe there will be a phone outage in Western NY?

But there's going to be a little part of me that will be extremely bummed if he doesn't sing "Conga" now. Unless he sings "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You", because that would be almost as funny.

I believe Latoya will do very will with anything she sings, Fantasia will do well, and probably make it interesting.

George, I love his talent. I hope he's able to show it off tonight.

I'm thinking Red might surprise us.

No comment on Diana or Jasmine.

I just read on etertainment tonight's sight that George is still sick and unless he can pull through tonight they think he may go home.
Of course Johnny Red is singing the Nsync song Estefan did with them.
How can Johnny Red possibly stay on another week.
Of course as always they give high praise to Fantasia and Latoya, what else is new" They said Jasmine starts off pitchy but gets better. They like Diana.
Do you think they make their decisions based on rehearsals?? So when they go in that night they know what they have to say. Well if that is the case, its stupid.

In other "American Idol" news, ET's Insider has the latest from this week's rehearsals which have a Latin theme as the idols will be backed by the MIAMI SOUND MACHINE and the guest judge is GLORIA ESTEFAN.

Maybe it's a result of being in the bottom three last week, or maybe she just wants to shake things up, but this week La Toya casts aside her normal ballads and performs the "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You."

Fellow diva, the fab Fantasia, struck an instant rapport with Gloria when she walked into rehearsals, kicked off her high heels and told the Grammy Award winner, "Girrrrrl, I want you to teach me to salsa!" Fantasia chose "Get On Your Feet," and it goes without saying will add her own gospel flair.

GEORGE HUFF is having a tough week. The New Orleans native is not feeling well, so his voice is not ringing true. Sources say this could be his last week in the competition, despite earlier speculation he would make it to the Top 4. George has selected "Live For Loving You."

DIANA DeGARMO, who also was ill during two weeks worth of performances, has fully recovered and will sing "Turn The Beat Around," and the Aloha girl JASMINE TRIAS will give viewers her rendition of "Here We Are."

And last, JOHN STEVENS sings "Music of My Heart," the duet Gloria performed with *NSYNC. This is not the type of song John does best, and hopes are not high for his performance, but John found support from his mother, who watched proudly as he rehearsed.

According to the Insider, Diana, La Toya and Fantasia delivered the strongest rehearsals, with Jasmine starting a little shaky but building her confidence as she goes. The two weakest performances are John Stevens, who only does "okay, not hitting the notes," and as mentioned earlier, if George can't get it together because of his illness, he could be out if he doesn't turn the beat around.

She was dancing a lot, that would explain the out of breath thing. I think she did good, not her best but she looked amazing. I don't see it getting better than Latoya's performance tonight.Gloria's songs aren't easy to sing, a lot of her songs are very fast paced.

Latoya looked fantastic - is a pro, is the winner in my eyes. The song itself was awful - but that's because the music only works on Gloria Estefan (highly overrated as artists go, in my opinion - these contestants can sing circles around her - except for JS - Gloria Estefan would never have made it into this contest).

I think she did a nice job with the exception of some shudder-inducing clinkers here and there. She COULD have blown everyone else away with that song, but she just missed it.

I remember singing that song along with the radio back in the day and it IS a hard song to sing. Jasmine needed another week of practice to pull it off, IMO. That said, she was just as good as LaToya vocally (minus the screechy croak she had at one point) and looked AMAZING! Black is her color and her hair was fab-u-lous. Sooo much better without the inane flower.

Well that was the worst performance this whole season. He does not want to be there anymore. You can tell, so I want to know, if his fans love him so much, then why don't they give him what he wants and let him go home? He was out of tune the entire time, and he wasn't even trying. It was half-a$$ed.

He has a sweet little voice, useful for lulling babies and grandmothers to sleep............oh yeah, and me. The only problem is, just as I'm falling off, he hits another string of sour notes. John Apnea.

He's a nice kid and doesn't deserve the backlash, but it's TIME FOR HIM TO GO HOME.

Lost his breath?!?

He's smiling from embarrassment because he just realized that he forgot to sing the second verse, and almost sang the glory note that was supposed to come later in the song!

The flower is gone but she has a black flowery thing on her belt

She sounds pretty good at beginning and her hair and face looks GREAT

ending not as good as the beginning

THe outfit is toooo casual again. But Simon would be yellin at her if she wore something like Latoya

Randy: aiight, liked the song choice so did I 7/10 pitchy

GEPA: same

Simon: Gloria has come out the best, pleasant imitation like if she recorded for elevator music CD Tonite pleasant is good

She started out pretty good and yet again there were about 4 flat and out of tune parts to her performance, she is very consistent with that. I'm not impressed. She is mediocre.

Latoya was the best overall because of the whole package: dance, outfit, SHOES, not her best vocals, but better than anyone else tonite

Jasmine was 2nd because of the beginning of her song

John- I know everyone is against me on this but he is going to be safe again. The same people will vote for him and many will because he's had such a rough go of it this week

Diana: Ok but yoy and double yoy on the dress (any Pghers here??)

George: did not sound very good, but I dont think he'll be gone

Fantasia just might leave after tonite's performance Way over the top and it just was awful for her

Bottom three; Fantasia, Diana, and either John or George

Goes home: Diana with Fantasia as a close second

Best to worst in order:
1. Latoya
2. George
3. Fantasia
4. Diana
5. Jasmine
6. John
I won't say who the bottom 3 will be because it doesn't matter, the voters are fickle. I will also never list someone who is sings off key or out of tune in the top 3, sorry Jasmine.

I agree with you 100% she devil... Jasmine was so out of tune. Week after week she just stands there and is boring. She has never tired an upbeat tune.
People did not like George's performance but at least the guy tries and he gets into his performances.
Performance has a lot to do with it.
I think Jasmine or John should go home. I think diana has a big ego, notice how she told Simon to take her shopping for next week, pretty confident she would be back..

Remeber folks, this is just my opionion.

I didn't care for anyone tonight. They all sounded very Kariokie to me. I know Gloria's music is fasted paced and hard to sing. In the words of Randy Jackson " They just didn't do it for me Dawg!"

The best, if I have to choose was " Diana".

Latoya was beautiful. Not her best. Sorry.

George, what the heck was that?

Fantasia, it was great she gave a shout out to Jennifer, but she just shouted tonight.

John Stevens, poor, poor John Stevens. Nice kid, I like "HIM",
but I think is time to pack it in.

Jasmine, Love, love, love this song. She did OK. I guess I am just used to Gloria sing it.

That's it in a nut shell. The bottom three: Fantasia, John, George.

Wednesday is the night we will be loosing John.

Diana- The only person who sand like GE and teh judges loved it. I even liked the dress
2. Jasmine- Looks like teh two underdogs came on top grest great great. You and Diana rocked the only reason keeping her from 1st is that i am a huge Diana fan.
3. John Stevens- I know i really just hated LaToya, Gerorge and Fantasia so he got number 3
4. Fantasis- Horrible
5. LaToya- horrible and boring
6. George- No comment

"My Assessment...."

A versatile singer can shine in tonight's show... but it end up mediocrity-to-abysmal at its best... and I must praise those who sang upbeat songs 'coz this theme should have been lively.

I think LaToya and Diana are best tonight but their performances don't prove great so much... LaToya showed she can dance and she has personality but she seemed to be out of breath.

Jasmine disappointed me once again. She chose a song that had originally flat notes (I listened to the original and predicted that she'll suck big time since there are lot of flat notes in the original song) and she made some notes even flatter or sharper. She should have chosen an upbeat since Ms. Estefan is far more known for her fast latin songs. Makes me even wonder what if she made it in the Final 4 and sing another ballads in the DISCO night.

The rests... they're not good, but I have to commend the judges for givin' John a morale boost.

Barf. That was lame, lame, lame. It's going to be so hard to find anything nice to say. This show actually made me want to get off the couch and pack for my upcoming move. That's just sad.

Tolerable:

- Diana - OK, I'm not usually a fan, but she was much better than so many of the others this week. That dress was terrible, though, and didn't flatter her at all. It made her look fat.

- LaToya - She looked so cute! And at least she was on key. She's got style, even though this was a weaker performance for her.

Puh-leeze:

- Fantasia - She was missing notes like crazy - Randy and Simon were right on about that. She picked a tough song, but she didn't sing it well.

- Jasmine - Once again, she started decently, and once again, she went way off key. I'm tired of counting her clunky notes.

- George - Sigh. I still love his energy, and it was radically better than the past two weeks, but that's still not saying much.

Ack:

- John - He picked the right song. And Simon was right - he's handling the criticism with class. But he did not sing this song well. He lost track of where he was in the song, and he wasn't hitting the notes. Maybe, just maybe, with some training and some time to get comfortable on stage, he could develop into something. But this isn't a training program, it's a competition, and he just doesn't cut it.

what a horrible night - talk about showcasing their limitations - this was just awful!

Best to Worst

1. Diana - I thought she did a great job of keeping up with the tempo without wearing herself out. The dress was not flattering to say the least, but if could have been worse. I'm not sure how exactly, but surely it oculd have been worse. I'm not gonna rip a 16 year old on her figure. Life is hard enough. She sounded good though - it was an entertaining, energetic performance. You know, I just lvoe her enthusiasm and innocence. She doesn't overthink it and her sassiness doesn't strick me as contrived and orchestrated - which Fantasia's always does.

2. Latoya - looked lovely! The dancing distracted from her vocals and also adversely affected them. She was out of breath and it showed. Still very polished.

3. George - a mediocre performance on a mediocre night. I keep hoping old George will make an appearance. The memories of his good nights are fading. And please George - stop smiling all the time - it gives you a desperate, deer in the headlights look that does not evoke confidence.

4. Fantasia - did her jumping around make anyone else nervous? Fantasia was is desperate need of a bra tonght. The dancing, the shout-outs, everything just seemed overdone and overwrought. The night she did Summertime Fantasia seemed genuine - I want that Fantasia back.

5. Jasmine - I was genuinely surprised to see her ranked so highly by so many. I thought it was AWFUL!!! It was boring and uninspired and totally off key. I wanted her to build on her really strong performance from last week, but she went backward.

6. John Stevens - I don't want to rag on the kid. Simon is right that he has taken all this with dignity and class. It's not fun to watch a child get raked over the coals each week. I don't want to do it anymore - send the kid home and let him go quietly.

I agree (mostly) with Pooh.

Diana--Actually thought her dress was more flattering than most of her other outfits. No question she was best tonight.
Latoya--Probably her worst performance, but better than the rest.
George--Ditto
Fantasia--Get a bra and stop yelling!
Jasmine--The sound coming out of my TV must be vastly different than others, b/c the last part of her song went horribly, HORRIBLY wrong! No disrespect to others who thought her performance was great but, heck, I can sing half of a song on key--make me the American Idol! I wouldn't rank her above the top 4 either last night or overall.
John--Please send him home! Simon is right, though, he has been taking it like a man.

"Can't we have a new thread for critiques?"

OK, reporting in from the Left Coast, but can't we start a new thread for our critiques since this one is always over 100 posts by the time we see the show out here?

Latin Music. High Energy. Valium in these guys' hands (or voices).

Best and Rest:

Diana - I rarely rank her over Latoya, but she was the best tonight. She was the only one I felt knew anything about the rhythm necessary to be good at this genre. But why was she wearing a flogger?

Latoya - She did well, as always. She is like a smart kid taking a test who does well in all subjects, but never excels at any one. She is very competent at everything she sings, but doesn't shine at anything in particular.

OK:

Jasmine - I usually always put her at okay. She doesn't have what it takes to really shine. And I am always very, very conscious of her breathing. I don't hear anyone else breathe but her. To me, that isn't good technique.

Fantasia - Normally I put her very, very high, even though I'm not a big fan. She doesn't have the thang for this genre. No big deal, she should just avoid it. It should not detract from her overall performances.

Not Good:

John - Yawn.

George - Like I suspected, he peaked already. We won't see any more good performances by him. He has already hit his stride and is off his game now. Pity that someone like Jennifer, who got voted off mid-stride is gone, while George will most likely last further in the competition, is basically done.

Several months after she broke her back, Gloria Estefan gave an interview to some magazine. She said that she would rather give birth a few more times than have to suffer the pain of a broken back.

Well, last night, she experienced something much more painful than a broken back - being the guest judge for last night's show. What a painfully, horrible show overall.

Send them all home.

Bring back Jennifer.

Of course she could. She certainly couldn't be worse than Jasmine's painful flatness and John Stevens weak, painful, flat, performances. (and unlike John, she'd probably remember the words to her song).

You thought that was nice of Fantasia to keep yelling out Jennifer's name. When I saw jennifer on the talk circuit it seems there was no love lost between those 2
Maybe it was a shove in the face for Jennife. Why on earth would she do that? If anyone should ahve done it, it whould ahve been George who was the closest to her.

Where did you see Jennifer acting like there was no love lost between them? I've seen her several times on t.v. talking about the show, and when asked about the other divas I believe she said they got a long just fine. If Fantasia was shoving it in her face then she's a great actress, she was crying backstage after the show.
