Special double-episode tonight -- and the Boston Herald has been kind enough to spoil some of the plot twists.

From the Boston Herald:

http://theedge.bostonherald.com/tvNews/view.bg?articleid=129022

The two hours end with a close-up of everyone’s favorite tech girl, a teary Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub).

*****

When last week’s hour closed, Jack was on the trail of a former associate (Peter Weller) implicated in selling nerve gas to terrorists. What Jack does to force his one-time colleague to talk is shocking and revolting.

*****

First Lady Martha Logan (Jean Smart, the sexiest woman on TV) ... is drafted into duty, however, after the vice president (Ray Wise, “Twin Peaks”) persuades the president to usurp the law and declare martial law in Los Angeles.

*****

Bauer has a frostly reunion with his daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert), who is stunned to realize her father faked his death.

*****

Tony (Carlos Delgado) awakens from that first-episode car bombing demanding to see his wife, who perished in the blast.

*****

Those terrorists ... keep everyone busy by staging an attack on a hospital and then an assault on CTU, helped by the stolen key card from a certain ex-hobbit (Sean Astin, doing a wonderful job of playing an utterly useless bureaucrat). Everyone is in jeopardy, and it looks like another hero falls in the line of fire.

*****

So who's the casualty at CTU? Probably not Kim, since the person is referred to as a "hero" -- a word that would never be used in connection with Our Lady of Peril -- and I'm not sure that Chloe would be teary-eyed about Kim's death anyway.

Edgar is the only one that Chloe would tear up about. IMHO

Sounds like it's going to be a great couple of episodes tonight. I can't wait!

Edgar or Tony. I think she'd tear up about Tony too.

Hero....any chance that is the auto-spell check for 'Ho'?

Please, please, please don't let it be Edgar...

Edgar Stiles: Maybe it's a delayed reaction kinda thing. Maybe you'll freak out about it in a few days.
Chloe: I hope so.

My guess is Tony since he doesn't have any ties to anyone at CTU other than Jack any longer.

I guess we'll also find out why dufus' sisters boyfriend kept the keycard too.

ETA: Holy Sh!t DO NOT FvCK with Jack. Amazing what he can and WILL do to get the information he requires.

WHY EDGAR?!?

Gah..

Shoot...why Edgar? I avoid reading the boards until I actually see the episode. I just watched it off the DVR.

I was hoping Lynn or Tony, but Lynn still has a story left. He still has to face up to the fact that he reported the theft of his badge 4 hours later and the fact he almost prevented CTU from stopping an assasination attempt on the Russian dude and his wife.

I'm not really sure what's left for Tony. His wife his dead. I would assume he would sacrifice his life to save the rest of CTU from the nerve gas.

That sucks...they had to pick Edgar.

I thought it was way cool when the episode ended without the typical clinking down of the seconds. It was appropriately eerie to have the seconds silently go by.

And now that I've seen the preview...whoa. All of my complaints about the season so far are gone, because I cannot wait to see what happens next week!

I'm with you... this season's turning out to be a really good one...

BUT WHY EDGAR?!

I know they've done it a couple times before. The one I remember best was the Ryan Chapelle shooting, I am pretty sure it was silent. I also believe when David Palmer was poisoned by Mandy, it was a breathing final countdown

But damn, why Edgar. Waaaaaaaaaah

ETA: Here are the "different" beep occurences

1.23: Nina is revealed as the CTU Mole and the tempo was different
1.24: Teri's death warranted the silence
2.??: Mason flew the plane with the nuclear bomb (?) in it into the desert
2.24: David Palmer is poisoned by Mandy, a gasping final few seconds
3.18?: Ryan Chapelle is shot by Jack Bauer to satisfy terrorist
5.13: Edgar Stiles dies due to nerve gas

Noooo..not Edgar...he was such a great Character. I saw it coming once he realized that the girl was missing and went looking for her. Such a shame and next week who do you think will join him, Tony or Bill?

My money's on Lynn. Not much of a storyline left without power, a keycard, or his family, and a redemption edit (if still alive) would be a fitting ending.

That's assuming he's not dead. If so, then quite possibly Kim. Would raise some pretty sweet tension between boyfriend and Jack, Kim doesn't have to come back, and it'd make sense...although Kim still has potential.

I'm leaning towards Tony...

his story's over.

Tony and Lynn, if both are still alive, seem to be the main choices among the groups that I am seeing. Tony really has nothing to do, except be a type of person that "saves the day". I wouldn't be shocked if he gets the info from Robocop, kills him, then sacrifices his life to tell Jack.

Somehow, after tonight, I can't formulate a good guess. Before tonight, I'd guess Lynn or Tony easily, but after they offed Edgar...damn...

"Bill"
Posted by Devious Weasel on 03-07-06 at 04:38 PM
Despite the Tony hints, I think it's Bill. He's in an upstairs office by himself - he can try to do something in the main body of the building without exposing everyone else.

I am such a sissy man-baby.

I saw the whole thing coming from a mile away, but I still got kinda teary when Edgar collapsed like that. Very emotional moment. The last time I felt that emotional after an episode was Chapelle's death.

I gotta start distancing myself from this show. I'm waaaay too into it.

RIP Edgar

"Powerful show"
Posted by AyaK on 03-06-06 at 11:51 PM
It's obvious that the producers realized that 5.13 was a powerful show, especially ending with Edgar's death. So ... 40% of CTU was killed in the gas attack? And Lynn was entirely at fault, since he lost his key card and didn't report it? Yeah, I could see him volunteering for a suicide mission (if he wasn't already dead).

"RE: Powerful show"
Posted by Emily RugBurn on 03-08-06 at 02:20 PM
I might be switching from the Tony camp to the Lynn camp (in regards to the "ulitmate sacrifice"). They did it at least once before, when George Mason (who was a pain in everyone's rear) redeemed himself by volunteering to go down with the plane carrying the nuclear bomb. Lynn's probably feeling guilty, like it's all his fault (which it is) and he probably feels like this is the only way to wash the blood from his hands. Lynn's definitely a wuss with a Napoleon complex, but I don't think he's a "bad" guy. (Just annoying. Very, very annoying.)

I do think Tony's story is pretty much over, but a) do they really want to kill off two likeable characters back-to- back? and b) if he's locked in the room with Robocop (is he?), I'll bet we're gonna see some sick sh!t go down while he extracts info from him (and avenges Michelle's death in the process). I'd like to see a "good guy" character who has nothing to lose really use it to his advantage (by doing stuff he wouldn't normally do; breaking rules, etc...)... unless of course, he sacrifices himself getting important info to Jack...

Only time will tell! I can't wait `til next week!!

Oh, J Slice - I almost forgot. Bill? Kinda sorta freakin' hot. And rumour has it you're into the "mature" doods. This is for you (just in case you wanted to add a second "24" hottie to your sig pic):

"SPOILER for next week"
Posted by Bebo on 03-07-06 at 00:28 AM
Just read Kristin's weekly chat transcript, and from what she hints, it looks like those of us who think that Tony is toast next week are right.

From mycatz2: 24! Tony wakes up! This makes me very happy. It's about darn time. And Kim reenters. What's going to happen?

Let's just say you aren't going to be happy for long.

"RE: SPOILER for next week"
Posted by Fishercat on 03-07-06 at 00:32 AM
Could that have been for this week? I don't know, all of that applies to tonight's episode. Tony woke up, I was happy, it was time, Kim came back, and I wasn't happy for long.

Of course, it could mean something else...

"Sorry, but"
Posted by Bebo on 03-07-06 at 08:57 AM
...since that chat took place during the episode itself, for her to include that in her super-secret spoiler zone section of the chat, she had to be referring to future events. Otherwise, this would have been in the first part of her chat, where she often reviews the most recent events on shows. If the not happy comment was just referring to Kim, she would have elaborated, since Kim-bashing has been alive and well there for quite some time.

I'm guessing Tony, also. After losing Michelle, he'll likely not have much to want to live for, and also, not being an agent anymore, he might think of himself as expendable. And really, not many would be too heartbroken if we lose Lynn.

My vote also goes to Tony. I think Lynn is a die hard chickenshit who wouldn't volunteer for a suicide mission if his life depended on it.

Tony has lost Michelle and probably doesn't feel he has anything to live for. Of course he hasn't met me yet.

But why Edgar? *sob*

"Kim"

And her stupid boyfriend too. What a pompous piece of crap.

I was really sorry to be right about Edgar dying last night. Very emotional episode.

Lyn's a wuss. I can't see him sacrificing himself (although, it would be a great way to redeem his character right before his final exit - a la Mason). My money was immediately on Almaeda, though. They seemed to have been setting up that he's got nothing to live for.

Actually that part pissed me off. I'll be very pissed with the writers if they make Aaron a scapegoat to discount his testimony when he says something about what Martha told him with a so called trist with the first lady. That whole scene had bad vibe on it, like Martha and Mike schemed it together to save the president after Martha spilled the beans.

I agree that it looked like a set-up. The first lady was just far too cold when Aaron arrived after being summoned by her. I expected her to give him a big hug for saving her but she was just too, too calculating.

By the by, I love Jean Smart in this role. I know its been said before but it bears repeating.

That whole thing came out of nowhere....it just didn't make any sense. I hope it wasn't a set-up by the first lady but truth be told, Mike was coming in to tell her about the martial-law thoughts when all that happened so I didn't see how it could have been a setup arranged by her and Mike. It still just didn't fit with anything we'd seen from her or Aaron before.

Thanks for the thresd Ak! I was bummed last night when I tuned into the SECOND hour - just so busy I forgot about the first hour starting earlier. But, at least Fox does a good job with summaries they post the following day, so I at least have a sense of what happened.

I'm mourning Edgar also. However, the range of his role and emotions had pretty much run their course. I can't imagine the emotion and guilt one would feel inside the safe room at a point like that.
