Please keep all discussion of tonight's season finale and subsequent Reunion on this thread until 2 a.n. Eastern, by which time the West Coast will have finished banging their heads against the nearest wall after hearing next season's theme.

And now, the little talk. (99% of you are skipping over to the Reply button.)

How did we get here?

We got here because MB picked up a set of crooked dice and rolled them until the numbers came up the way he wanted -- and then threw out all other results, declaring only the one favorable roll to have counted. Collect all bets, snicker, and get out the door before anyone can call security. Not that it matters, because security never responds.

This is not the most manipulated reality competition on television. Idol walked into first place this year (and made much of the viewership walk away), claiming the top spot from Grodner and her rats. (I never said it had to be well-manipulated.) But this series? Solid third place with an eye on the #2 spot.

Let's face it: the concept was sunk from the start. We all looked at the 'favorites' list and laughed: some with disdain, some because laughter made it hurt less. The fans -- well, we could prove a few of them had at least heard of the show, but there were still recruits in a field of people who hadn't figured out how to play -- or worse, could see one move ahead and exactly that: hi, Sherri -- are you expecting your Twitter account be flooded with meaningless lack of payback? Or no moves ahead while convincing themselves Zero=Day Thirty-Nine, and Reynold, that means you. There was exactly one true fan in this season, and he has six legs, a shell, and a position in the final five.

The idols have turned into a joke -- or at least the hiding of them has: the play was almost always a punchline. The only time someone couldn't find the thing was when they had directions: what flavor of pathetic is that? Might as well spend next fall putting them directly in front of player's faces, as that seems to be the last perpetual blind spot in the game.

The producers lucked into some good moments, yes. We were finally in the position for a double bounce, and while there were ways it could have been more spectacular, let's not complain too much about getting fireworks instead of a meteor shower. Dawn cried a lot, and that's the kind of hysteria you just can't buy at market value. Brenda cried a little and people noticed she existed. Brandon may have gotten the entire Hantz clan thrown off CBS -- after tonight -- at least: we all owe him a debt for that and if you can't send cash, I'm told flaming bags of feces are always welcome. And we can't forget: Phillip was made to shut up for several episodes, which will sadly end tonight and then again when he's brought back for his third season. You know it'll happen. I have said it and MB appears to be doing everything I say, as long as it'll hurt me.

Look, I basically just about came up with next season's theme, okay? I can predict anything as long as it svcks...

When was the last time you trusted a single word out of Jeff's mouth? More than two consecutive seconds of edit? Have you felt that people were not being directed to idols, and have you felt that way in the last three years? Can we get a Reward which doesn't come with payback? How many endurances and soft-toss contests can you stand? And shall we just admit the series has found a tax haven and will never ever leave the Philippines again?

We gained some moments. But the price is so high. Applications? Are dead. Casting? Drama only, taking on parts rather than people. And the game itself... that Idol level of manipulation isn't so far away, is it? MB got there in two seasons before this: Parvati and Rob's last. When you see the next theme and hear the next cast, ask yourself if he's going back to that depth. And who he's going there for.

Two prior seasons (at least) designed for one chosen player to win. Is this three?

It's not much of a game any more. It's not a particularly quality script either.

It's been a long season.

The next one will be longer.

Once more into the breach.

Having a Survivor viewing party tonight? Or just want to take liquor shots for each time these words/sayings/actions occur to numb the pain you'll all feel watching these loozers, especially when the Hantzes chase Phillip all over the place at the reunion?

Here you go... bingo cards!

The word is out that Brandon was banned from the finale/reunion, supposedly at the request of Phillip. I think there's an article on it over in the news section here. So far as I know RussHell hasn't been banned, but after what he said that might change or they might have plenty of security.

Edited to add: The article on Brandon being banned is not on RTVW, it is on RealityBlurred, and the link to it is in post 81 of the Caramoan press thread here.

RussHell is the one claiming that Brandon was banned because Phillip is afraid of being near Brandon. And that Phillip was the bully and mean and so on, LilHantz stood up to him like a man.

He also says he's going to be there and already has a lawyer hired to get him out of jail for what he does to Phillip. More BS from the Hantz Troll Gene.

CBS and Probst and so on haven't said anything about it yet. I think CBS and SEG just don't want to be associated with Brandon anymore because they are embarrassed they let the psycho play again, and he is still unpredictable (check out the end of part 2 of his RTVW interview).

Besides, do you expect us to believe anyone would be so stupid as to leave a permanent electronic record declaring their premeditated intent to commit a crime before actually going out and doing it?

...

...nevermind.

Yes, I can believe Russhole would be that stupid. But what I think he really wants is for Phillip to wimp out and not show up.

Some reality shows you can FF through all the drama and there is something redeeming at the end--a a cool bike at OCC, a nice dance on Dance Moms, etc. Estee is right--the hand behind the Survivor series is getting heavier and heavier in it's manipulations. WHY won't anyone listen to the fact that instead of vapid, hardbody eye candy and recycled losers what would make this show better would be one season of a full complement of players who are savvy strategists and not "characters". Instead of the usual slate of achetypes, take a chance on some smart players with a balance of social and athletic skills who can write their own story.
The "shocking" revelations at Tribal Council are brought about through sometimes hours of questioning aimed to tease out based on producer observations of what is going on in the game. Those confessionals that form our feeling about a characters skill and likability are not spontaneous sound bytes from the players but are orchestrated and directed. The players responses may be unrehearsed, but each of those speeches are the response to a question from a producer just out of camera range engineered to elicit a certain type of response and edited to reflect they desired response if the subject's reply isn't close to what they are looking for. (I spent a day escorting an Oprah Winfrey crew and saw that technique first hand.)
Yes, tonight has an engineered ending that even my 90 year old mother-in-law can predict. I would be nice to see a field of real players and a season that is a challenge to spoil.
Enjoy the final. I'll be watching it on DVD tomorrow morning.

I think they engineered the ending by means of their casting selections. They specifically wanted the winner we will see and came as close as they can to guaranteeing it through the people they put on with this person.

Yes, they engineer the outcome and the storyline through their casting choices...underdog with strategy skills, overconfident and egotistical player the audience will root against until his ultimate exit, the lunatic dancing on the razor's edge (who went over the edge this time), the eyecandy fluff without enough braincells to win. And they engineer our responses through manipulated confessionals and the editing--imagine the uproar this week if we had gotten to know Brenda. I watched ONE week of Phillip's original season because I knew he would annoy me and it was a foregone conclusion that this was Boston Rob's season. Everything was set in place for Rob to finally win.

Mr. Bebo was so pleased when he found out we would not be watching the Survivor Finale tonight. Short and sweet response - I don't like Survivor.

Mr. Chemig doesn't like it either. Ironic, though, because when it debuted on May 31, 2000 he watched it with his parents while I 1) thought it was a stupid idea for a show and 2) I was busy with a 7 day-old infant.

Maybe they will finish the live show on time this season.

http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/survivor_caramoan/2013_May_12_pre-jury-not-on-stage

The Survivor Caramoan cast members who did not make it to the jury won’t be sitting on stage during the live reunion, which they learned at the dress rehearsal. In addition, Brenda, who is on the jury, is too pregnant to fly to Los Angeles, but she’ll apparently appear via a satellite connection.

Those are more firsts for a reunion that’s already excluding one cast member.

Here are some pre-juror cast member reactions to the producers’ decision to relegate them to the audience. They are not happy:

Corinne is furious. Says others are enraged. It is a travesty.
Laura is disappointed.
Allie is encouraging protest tweets.

Dear gawds, look at the raw amount of clock we have left. What is this episode on track for? Other than a Nielsen rating of 0.0000002?

By the way, certain players finished that challenge six times while Jeff was still describing it. Not a great choice for final Immunity.

His advantage was that his bags wouldn't be tied so he could grab them as soon as he got to them while the others had to untie theirs. All eventually caught up with him, though. Dawn and Sherri managed to get themselves in this one, Eddie was hopeless at the puzzle, but Cochran eventually managed to fit all the pieces together. Is now contemplating his choices, should he blindside Dawn. Go ahead, insure the Brenda vote.

And Cochran was confident he was deciding who would finish as runner-up, Dawn or Eddie, which stayed and which went home.

Eddie kept saying Dawn had a good shot of winning, sympathy mom game. Dawn pointed out Eddie has no enemies on the jury. Eddie knows he can't claim to have outplayed or outwitted.

Finally clicks for Cochran, if it is a bitter jury Eddie definately wins. Eddie goes home.

Sherri warns that she has done more in the game than any of them think. Thinks she has a chance. Keep thinking that, Sherri.

It's safe to say this now: we've had a few spoilers claiming that Dawn got bashed so badly at the final TC, she went into some degree of therapy after the game. But if what we just saw tipped her into a couch...

We've seen harder and more direct attacks at other Councils. Many other Councils. I'd rank Dawn's pummeling at about a 5.5 out of 10. Tops.

We knew she was weak in a lot of aspects -- but... that weak?

You could argue this is the most dominating win in Survivor history because Cochran went up against 9 other faves, some of whom really knew the game, and won four challenges as well. There's been other shutouts, but I believe all of them were against fellow newbies.

I'm putting him in the top third on instinct, but I won't try to figure out just where he belongs yet. I still say the Favorites side was weak in a number of ways, and the Fans -- well, self-demonstrating.

"RE: Cochran's finale look."
Posted by byoffer on 05-12-13 at 10:28 PM
Dominating and strategic win.

But as many of us said before the season, this was a greatly flawed bunch of Favourites. That this group of Favs owned the game to me shows how much of an advantage that returning players have.

I think Cochran is a perfect example of this. His first time out, despite being a student of the game, his mind was on himself and not the game. This time out he got past that and played the game.

But this cast was too flawed for me to call him the greatest winner.

"Time to 'fess up"
Posted by Bebo on 05-12-13 at 10:15 PM
OK, sourced spoiler readers, time to confess. When the sourced spoilers revealed that Cochran was the likely winner and revealed Dawn and Sherri as the others in the F3, how many of you were ready to barf? And how many of you are now satisfied with his win?

"RE: Time to 'fess up"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 05-12-13 at 10:21 PM
I'm on record as saying before the season that I looked forward to seeing how Cochran would do and if he had learned anything from his first go-around (saying this before I found out he was in the final three) because I thought he had some really good ideas on how to play the game and was willing to try different methods even if they blew up spectacularly in his face back then.

I think that question has been emphatically answered.

I was skeptical.

"RE: Time to 'fess up"
Posted by Estee on 05-12-13 at 10:30 PM
Truthfully? I thought he was the Chosen One and that portions of the season had been rigged to make sure he advanced. (I still have some belief in that -- the tribal shuffle and two challenge advantages, along with the casting as a whole?) But I also thought this was the season where Anti-Darwin syndrome ate the island, with all physically adept players dying early. Eddie spent a lot of time proving me wrong. Not that it ever did him any good...

He earned it, but don't ask me about the hiring process.

When I saw the list, I knew that Cochran had the potential for a strong game if he used lessons learned from his first game. What make me want to barf was the sourced spoiler that said the vote came down to a 4-4 tie between Cochran and Sherrie and that in the tie breaker Dawn voted for Sherrie. But as the final weeks played out, that became more and more unrealistic.

So the latest tiebreaker rumor said the excluded finalist in a two-way lock would make the ultimate decision? Ouch.

OK, sourced spoiler readers, time to confess. When the sourced spoilers revealed that Cochran was the likely winner and revealed Dawn and Sherri as the others in the F3, how many of you were ready to barf? And how many of you are now satisfied with his win?

I am not denying Cochran's victory...it was indeed a very deserving one, and the rightful one, imo. But, you cannot discount his competition in this season....OMG! Horrific, in my humble opinion. When you are playing with a bunch of knuckleheads and crackpots, of course Cochran looks GREAT! And, kudo's for him for keeping it all in perspective.

...just sayin'.

I am ready to leave this season behind and move beyond. And, I sure hope they leave the crackpots and knuckleheads behind too!

Agreed 100%. OMG! If Erik hadn't collapsed one the way back from TC, we wouldn't have seen him lapse automatically into EMT mode and show us that there is a brain in there. It took until the final scramble and the final 2 TCs to show that he could actually think strategically about the game. Sherrie was clueless until the end, defiantly refused to let Erik hand her a clue, and was such a blathering ninny at FTC that even if the others had asked her a question and she had HAD game she would have blown it. She performed so badly in all area it took an explanation by Jeff at the Reunion to explain that she had some real world successes.

And Boston Rob did what Boston Rob does so well by trying to define Phillip as "one of the greatest characters in the game". Thus keeping Phillip's good will and admiration while basically saying, "you were not and will never be a Boston Rob, but you made me laugh watching you try." BR came close, but didn't hit the nail on the head: Phillip was edited as a CARICATURE of Boston Rob- a satirical illusion of the strategic player, exaggerated in some aspects and oversimplified in others.

And, FloPo, as we look toward the next batch of recycled knuckleheads and +1s we will be faced with at the end of the summer, we can already see some clues in the sourced speculation list as to who the "Golden children" are and who the knuckleheads are.

Congrats!

ER/EF/S/D/C

Should have put up the tie possibilities but I didn't bother.

ER/EF/S=D/C

Given what we knew and what was in the previews, I didn't think it made a lot of sense to pick Eddie to go out before Erik. Adding everything together, I figured Erik would go out overnight after the previous tribal, but didn't know it would be minutes later. But as bad a shape as I knew he would have to be in to get pulled this late, I figured it would take some time to get him back in good enough shape to be on the jury, so he almost had to have gone out before Eddie. As for the tie, I think we both had the order right, because if anybody would have gotten any votes other than Cochran, it would have been Dawn. Sherri was the ultimate nothing in a Survivor game, and there was no way she was ever gonna get any votes.

I can understand keeping the pre-merge boots off the stage because that permitted them to avoid the whole Brandon mess but Michael, Eddie, Erik and Sherri didn't get to talk. Eddie's brother said more than Eddie.

(I did like the Rob/Phillip moment and Rudy looks good for 85. He'd look good for 65. Anybody know why Hatch was unable to attend?)

It was not a clothing optional venue.

His parole officer wouldn't give the permission to travel outside his juridiction?

I'll guaran-damn-tee you not having to deal with and/or explain the Brandon mess was why they kept the pre-jury boots off the stage. And Hatch wasn't there because he couldn't be in order for his appearance to work.

Did anyone notice if Brandon was even there last night? They are paid $10,000.00 to be there. It was clear to me that Boston Rob was there to sell his book. I'm surprised that Phillip did not run down to meet Rob and give him a big wet kiss. Enough, enough with Boston Rob. Rudy was looking great. I felt really bad that the rest of the Survivor members were not allowed on stage.

I thought there were tweets and other such things before the show indicating that Brandon was not allowed to attend the reunion.

Yes it was announced beforehand that Brandon was banned from appearing, so shuffling the loozers into the audience was their pathetic way of covering this up.

Missyae said the entire Hantz family has been blacklisted by CBS. Hallelujah.

Hantzes are blacklisted at CBS.

Penner even tweeted that Brandon wasn't there.

Then Brandon might as well destroy the camp on day one and get it over with.

They showed a shot of the pre-jury in the audience while Dawn was talking.

Back Seats: Francesca (1), Allie (2), Hope (3), Shamar (4)

Front Seats: Laura (5), Matt (7), Julia (8), Corinne (9)

I thought it was terrible. These people must have been quite upset to not even get on stage, and as I read one comment, that little girl with braces got more air time than many of the actual survivors.

Thumbs down to the producers for that decision.

"RE: They call that a Reunion?"
Posted by dabo on 05-13-13 at 11:36 PM
It wasn't only that decision, but I understand why they did it. It would have been obvious to all viewers all the time throughout the live show that Brandon wasn't there had they had them sitting on stage. And few of them, Corinne and her pithy barbs excepted, could be go to interesting anyway.

Boston Rob was distraction, but good distraction considering how Phillip had his BR Rulebook. And -- aside -- good for them to get Rob to write/help him write an actual BR Rulebook, way to merchandise! I wouldn't waste any mony on it, wait for it to get spoiled.

Rudy and Richard, more theatrics and misdirection. Loved seeing Rudy, it was obvious to me they were just throwing some money Richard's way because they could and he needs it. That was all strictly staged misdirection. Richard's part was obviously pre-recorded.

Loved seeing Rudy again, though, don't get me wrong. He is a genuine American hero as are all the SEALS who have followed the path he helped create. But it was done for theatrics and misdirection, that's the nature of magic.

The poor tweenie who got stuck on the spot go all gushie about Malcolm, more of the same, but I really felt sorry for that kid.

I felt like talk show host Jeff Probst took over and was running it instead of Survivor host Jeff Probst. And look at what happened to the The Jeff Probst Show - it was cancelled. Many bad decisions all around.
