LAST EDITED ON 01-30-08 AT 01:30 PM (EST)

So last year, I picked Chris Sligh as my early favorite when he blew me away with the Seal song. This year, David Cook is my early fave. Did you see his audition last night? It was one of those times when I was annoyed at the judges for stopping him before he'd finished the song - even before he got to the chorus.

I like that he has a great voice and leans toward the rocker side of things. Could be another Daughtry...

Check out MJ's Big Blog for more information - although if you go, you will see spoilers.

Anyone else impressed?

Edited to add a link to his audition.

He said last night he was from Tulsa, so with him and Alaina I have 2 Okie's to cheer for.

I think he's originally from Missouri, but now lives in Tulsa.

My only problem with last night's audition was that I felt he was singing just a little TOO slow.

He's definitely one of my favorites right now. I always like having an Okie to root for.

Thought he was GAAAAAREEAAAAAAAAAT last night. BUT, he'll have to compete mightly with the Aussie, and the dread locks not to mention little David Archuletta, whom has more charisma than almost any idol audioneer before! But, I do think he'll go far. He's got a great voice, and even if he doesn't make the top 5 or so, I think he'll have a career-somewhere....

Finally David delivers on the potential we saw at his first audition. That was truly making a song your own. Rocking out to Lionel Richie? Amazing.

Ok, David C, YOU WON ME OVER!!! You are my one and only from now on, unless you do something horribly horrible (??) to throw this competition to the wolves, as some of your other competitors have done (in my eyes)!
Lionel Richie would have been PROUD, as most of us were, last night, when you came out and DID YOUR THANG!

You are a true talent, and proved last night that you can truly be the one to beat!! Keep on doing what you do best, and you may just take this whole show!!!!! LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOOOOOOOVED IT!!!!

Did I say I loved it??

Count me in as a fan as well. I have liked him from the start and thought he was incredible last night. Also nice to see he has checked a bit of his attitude at the door as the contest progresses.

Hey, someone else who liked Chris Sligh. While Sligh lost it quickly during the competition, I actually bought his CD last year and LOVED it. I am never thrilled by the winners of AI, but there have definitely been some good finds through the process.

I do like David Cook. He is in my top 3-4. His performance last night was his best, by far. I think he lacks a little in the charisma department, but he makes a competent front man for a band.

I hope he hangs in and gets a record deal, so I can add him to my very eclectic music collection. He's going to be compared too closely to Chris Daughtry, which I think will hurt him. Daughtry will be a tough act to beat and try to break out of the shadow of.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by LostAddict on 03-05-08 at 04:39 PM
I am SOO glad that he rocked it last night! Awsome rendition of "Hello."

I agree in the Charisma department. I liked him better with the pink faux hawk. Even though it wasn't my favorite hair, it stood out, which he needs to do. (That and for the first 6 weeks I identify people by their hair)

I hope he breaks away from the Chris Daughtry comparison. I think he could be more of a soloist where as Daughtry has became a band guy. We'll just have to see.

I really hope David C. keeps pulling of his rendition of songs. It could get very very interesting.

David is my favourite.

I like that he is taking the crappy songs they give them and finding newer versions of them. Even if his Billie Jean was modelled on someone else's, it was still way better than just doing karaoke of the original.

To me this shows that he is modern with his musical tastes. I don't think too many of the others can say that. Some great singers, but if they can't get modern then do we care? (hello? Taylor Hicks? Are you out there??)

The guy who won Canadian Idol last year, Brian Melo, was great at having a more modern alternative sound that certainly better suits my musical tastes than a lot of the other tripe.

Here is a youtube of Brian doing Karma Police, which certainly went over well on Canadian Idol:

Totally agree. He just keeps getting better every week! He delivers, clean, clear, precise, and right on the money, every. single. time!
As far as him being a nerd-so what? I play in a band where our bass guitarist is a computer whiz-kid, loves Shakespear, loves acting in old '30's-type plays, but when he's on that guitar, LOOK OUT! HE ROCKS!

What you do in your spare time does not (always) effect who you are in your musical life. I could care less if David beads bracelets for the women at the old folks homes-would love it if he did! He just knows what to do on that stage, and even if he doesn't win (because he isn't as pretty as Jason, or as 'cutsie' as Archuletta), he is going to be up there with Daultry, no doubt! NO DOUBT!

Most original Idol, ever, IMHO. But I didn't watch the first season, so I could have missed something.....doubt it though, because except for Kelly, I'm not seeing much of anyone else from there going anywhere.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by agman on 03-26-08 at 04:26 PM

I think he's much better than anyone from last season. I also think he's has more ability than anyone else this year. I can't believe the way he did Billie Jean last night. I'll bet he could take "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star" and make it great....

okay, well maybe not "twinkle twinkle little star" but you get the point

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by zazzy on 03-26-08 at 06:33 PM
I am enjoying David C but he is mimic-ing alternate arrangements of well known songs. Yes, he is doing it well.

As for original, Blake from last season was the one who actually revised the music himself--remember You Give Love A Bad Name?

I think Blake was more original while David C is refreshing. He serves up interesting versions that entertain us.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by bullzeye on 03-27-08 at 03:07 PM
You took the words right out of my mouth. I thought Blake was extremely creative last year as well. I really do like David Cook, but not certain if I like him as much as I liked Blake last year.

I agree with you 110%. He is my favorite this year too. He has great stage presence and knows how to work each song to make it his own. His devilish smile and nice eyes certainly woo me when he is singing into the camera. If he were to record an album of past hits like "Hello" and "Billy Jean" in his rocker way, I would so buy it. He is now the one to beat I think. Hopefully my voting for a half hour straight will help keep him safe. DAVID ROCKS!

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by Corvis on 03-27-08 at 09:26 AM
I agree with others who have said he isn't original in the way Blake was on the show. However, Cook is only second Idol whose album I think I might actually buy. (Daughtry was the first.) I would love to have his versions of Hello and Billie Jean.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by zazzy on 03-27-08 at 01:55 PM
Corvis--it's really easy. You don't need an ipod at all:

1. download itunes software--IIRC this does not take long

2. create an account

3. start perusing the "itunes store"--search for your favs, look at the top songs, albums, or movies or audio books lists, etc. There is even free stuff!

4. when you find a song you want, just select "buy the song" and in seconds itunes adds it to the itunes file on your computer

5. you can then listen to it on your computer or burn a cd (or xfer it to an ipod/iphone,etc.).

itunes even has a "burn a cd" button on the bottom right hand side of the screen so making a cd is really easy!

You can make lists of the songs in any order you want on a cd and then burn them--I like to make a new cd for a car trip.

People magazine had an article this week about how the judges think David's versions of the songs are original, but really he's "borrowed" them from others...

Lionel Richie's "Hello" - he stole from Incubus
Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" - he stole from Luke McPherson (Doxology)
Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" - he stole from Chris Cornell

After he got caught he finally gave Chris Cornell credit - but none of the others.

Ok Ricky I'll bite. With your logic then shouldn't every contestant from every season have said before they sang the song whether its the original or a remake from someone else???? It's done every year and every year the viewers know its not an original arrangement unless the contestant tells us it is. David never claimed he arranged those songs. Screaming David's a cheater is just silly.

Most of the songs are covers; that's how this competition goes. The trick is being able to sing well and being able to chose the right song "to cover."

The boy has got mad skills and I predict that he'll make the top 3. I don't know if he can beat the 2 Davids for the top 2 spots, because the judges want a 2 Davids Finale, or so they hinted on Larry King Live Monday night.

Regardless of how things go for Cook, he will most definitely end up with a record deal somewhere.

I really like him.

WOW!!! David's version of "Always Be My Baby" was awesome. It was so beautifully sung. He just took my breath away. Then when he started to cry, I was just about to melt. He seems so genuine and sincere and not afraid to show emotions. It was also nice that his brother (seated behind Paula and next to Teri Hatcher) could see him performing live. This is my first time watching a full season of AI (saw parts of 5 and 6), and I have become a huge DC fan. I just adore him. I've seen some talk around various sites with people debating whether or not it would be good for David to win it all - or if a second place finish would be better, given potentially additional opportunities for creativity. What do you all think? As far as I can tell, this hasn't been discussed in this thread.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by nailbone on 05-08-08 at 12:01 PM
Most people think that to win AI would be death for a rocker like DC, because of the crappy sappy finale song and stuff like it that he'd have to sing. Finishing second or below has turned out OK for most of the contestants, and some of them have done better than some of the winners.

"RE: David R. Cook"
Posted by Steph_Fan on 05-12-08 at 09:56 PM
In the new TV Guide with the final 3 on the cover, he says he does want to win, out of pride and respect for all the other contestants. So I guess that answers my question!

anyone outside of the mold ultimately doesn't stand a chance on AI - witness Jason Castro. I believe David Cook will end up #3 or #2 and will be the better for it. I think David A. is still The Chosen One and my only hope is that the judges & AI machine end up getting more than they bargained for in dealing with his dad.

I think they were hoping Cook would make the top 4-5 at least because even without a win he's marketable.

I've believed Archuleta is TCO ever since Paula said something like every imperfection in his performance just proves how totally perfect he is. The carp that other idols get drawn and quartered for are just oh sooooo cute when he does them. *blech*

So in my post up there from January I said he could be another Daughtry. I was wrong. I think he's better than Daughtry. More musically talented.

All of Daughtry's songs, which I love, sound similar. I think Cook will change it up from song to song. Can't wait to hear his first album.
