"Coach and Ozzy?"

Jeff:” Redemption Island. It was a twist that changed the game, and next season Redemption Island is back. Sixteen new castaways will embark on the adventure of a lifetime as they are abandoned in the South Pacific. They will face unrelenting storms, scorching temperatures, and unforgiving waters. They will be joined by two returning players who are seeking their own shot at Redemption”.

There has been a lot of speculation about who the two returning players will be. More recently there have also been some spoilers about their identity.

Daffodilca, posted over at SSucks that Coach is one of the two. Anti apparently deemed the spoiler credible enough to create a thread for it. He has not confirmed it, but he didn’t have any reason to refute it either.
http://survivorsucks.yuku.com/topic/83451/Coach-Returns-for-S23

One of the reason’s to doubt the rumor is the conflict between the filming of Survivor 23 and the premiere of Coach’s Movie in Missouri on June 17th.
http://gillioz.zhost.net/?p=490

I went to the website for the theatre where the premiere is being promoted as a black-tie event, world premiere, with live performances by the band members who play in the movie and an interactive Q&A with cast members…the curious thing is, no where does it mention that Coach will be in attendance at the premiere. It would seem to me that if he were planning to attend, it would be part of the promotion for the event, wouldn’t it?

This spoiler has recently gained additional credibility when Dani at Survivor Skills reported a spoiler from a “very reliable source”, identifying the two retuning players to be Coach and Ozzy.
http://survivorskills.com/forum/index.php?topic=7785.0

This independent confirmation leads me to believe that we should take a closer look at the possibility that Coach and Ozzy are the two who will be “seeking their own shot at redemption”.

If the June 17th premiere comes and goes without Coach making an appearance, we will have good reason to believe this spoiler is true.

I am a frequent lurker to the boards here. I know without a doubt - 100% one of this match-up is not correct. I just spoke with the person and they will not be going on the next season. 100% confirmed.

If one is incorrect, then maybe the other is also.

Like I wrote in the other thread, I doubt that they would ask Ozzy to return because he showed his limited strategic abilities and he threw challenges in FvF.

Coach seemed to be done with Survivor and having a movie is bigger than a TV show. I'd say that if he had been asked he would have told them to call back in a year or so.

"Ben"
Posted by dabo on 05-26-11 at 02:42 AM
Can we please start calling him Ben, he got fired from his coaching job.

Ben is an eccentric, so I would not rule out his doing Survivor again just for being asked. He's just that dumb.

Couldn't they find, you know, someone who is actually good at the game? Or at least had some game, at least in some sense? Ben just dragged everyone down into his own delusions. It would have been amusing had he simply been a harmless delusional eccentric, but he turned out to be a leader of the lemmings.

We can call this one now before it has even been played, whichever tribe gets stuck with Ben had ought to boot him first, if they don't they all lose.

Benjamin "Coach" Wade is how his name is listed for his movie premiere. I would expect that if he comes back for S23, he will still be refered to as "Coach" rather than Ben.

"... whichever tribe gets stuck with Ben had ought to boot him first..."

Something that would make my jaded old reality tv fan heart go pitty-pat would be to see one of the new contestants step up when they introduce the returning 'former losers' and say to the producers and both tribes:

"Most of the people on this beach have never lost at this game and have not even ever had one vote cast against them. The two people who just got off that helicopter are LOSERS at this game. They do not deserve to be here and both teams should agree right now to target these two 'artifacts of the production process' as the first eliminations for each tribe."

Works for me. Coach(sic) really isn't a very good player, just one of those odd personalities Probst inexplicably loves. But if his tribes would have just ignored him (his fantasy warrior game at least) he would have been relatively harmless.

Note to all future players: This is your best strategy if your tribe gets saddled with a recast castaway, ignore them as much as possible and get busy actually getting to know the rest of your tribe and building a solid team. Play real Survivor instead of getting sidetracked by your resident "experienced" DAW.

Didn't Zapatera do that? And then they got edited as fools.

I don't see how Coach or Ozzy would need REDEMPTION. Neither is a redemption story.

I'd be fine with Coach returning though. After B-Rob, he is probably the next most entertaining person to ever play the game. Who else would cry like a baby, compare himself to King Arthur and then quote Winston Churchill all in the same episode? Dude is hilarious.

They got edited as fools because they lost the Battle for Matt at the merge. If Matt went with the Zaps and one of the Zaps ultimately won it all, the editing would have been very different and someone like Steve would have been painted as a brilliant strategizer for orchestrating the Russhole boot instead of being edited as an old Jurassic-era corpse.

The only part of that which Zapatera did was getting rid of Russell first. They didn't ignore him, they didn't form into a team, etc. Both tribes got off to a bad start, a not regular start, because they focussed on the all-stars they had amongst them.

That's pretty much what Francesca said and she was the first one voted out for it.

A smart player would use the returning "star" because we've seen that very few are able to change their game. Better an enemy you know than one you don't. Ozzy and Coach would be my best friends until I decided they had to go. Neither would see it coming.

"I don't care about the strategy"
Posted by IceCat on 05-27-11 at 06:33 AM

I just want to see someone call the producers on it. For all I care, the 'caller' could be immediately escorted off the beach by Mark Burnett himself and a team of ex-SAS commandos.

A better sequence still would be the first TC of the new season consisting of simply the following: The tribe shows up with the returning 'star' trussed up and gagged. They dump their victim at Probst's feet and say 'Don't bother with your stupid questions and stick your ballots and your urn... this one's GONE'. Then they walk off.

If the producers don't give a rat's ass about game play anymore then why should the contestants?

Just an FYI - I have been away for through the holiday weekend and did not get the chance to speak to the person in question.

I just texted them this morning and no response. I called and their message indicates that they will be out of the country for the next month.

Prior to all of this though they told me they believed they were in contention for appearing on season 24 - which they believed an all-star season, NOT season 23. It appears they got a very last minute call and they are on 23.

It would help if you'd tell us who is on rather than just telling us who is not... Then we can investigate to see if that person is around or not.

"Was Ozzy an alternate?"
Posted by Krautboy on 06-01-11 at 01:55 PM
The explanation for Coach and Ozzy, may be simply that Ozzy was a last minute alternate for someone who dropped out shortly before filming began.

Ozzy was probably on the list of potential S24 All-Stars. When Coach's original co-star (Phillip perhaps?) dropped out due to contractual disagreements, or health issues...Ozzy may have been one of the few alternates who could make it on very short notice.

This scenario seems to fit with Survivorfan101's post above.

Interesting idea, KB.

I don't know. Phillip is certainly healthy in terms of online presence.
I think that Ozzy is a good choice for mentoring a tribe, because he's not all that strategic and he is a great survivalist.

Coach brags of his survivalist skills.
That could be a rationale for casting. With two returnees, they want to pick two that the newbies might value in some way.

I have a feeling that the new season will feature back to almost nothing in terms of supplies. Just a feeling. No beach chairs, luxuries. We know that Samoa can be brutal at this time of year. OTOH, unlike with Nicaragua, Samoa provides opportunities for foraging.

So if they are given two people who are really into the wilderness, that would make sense.

I keep wondering if they owe Ozzy a bit of a favor with the HvV scandal. Amanda is so bitter over HvV, after the fact, and with Parvati. But she also said that she wouldn't have liked to see Ozzy in HvV, because they had broken up. Also, Ozzy would never have trusted Parvati again. I just wonder if Ozzy was cut to accommodate the Parvati and Amanda attuned casting.

OTOH, some say he declined HvV, saying he wanted to act and not be just a Survivor guy. I don't know. I know that Colby was ambivalent about All Stars for that reason, but I hadn't heard that of Ozzy.

Whatever, Ozzy was a natural for HvV -- and wasn't on, so I do wonder if TPTB owed him one because of why he was omitted. Just spec.

ETA, here is an Amanda interview after HvV where she keeps saying how much she can't discuss.

Corvis,
it was a multi-part fix, allegedly, that goes something like this:

Parvati and Erika Shay visiting Samoa where Parvati could see raw footage from 19 (more than being "told" about Russell).

Casting bringing in players who would be pro-Parvati, including Candice and Danielle who were not obvious shoe-ins for the season -- and cutting those who would be against her, namely Penner and Ozzy, while casting James and Amanda who had made up with P.

Fiddling with tribe placement to avoid having it look like allies were together, by placing Candice on Heroes (when she was a betraying mutineer) and Danielle on Villains, when she at most broke a promise to Terry, but never to her real alliance. Danielle and Parvati were friends IRL, but had no prior association by season.

I believe Natalie Bolton was also an alternate for Courtney.

A fun bit from MaxxFisher's 6/2 post that announces Ozzy has taken a leave of absence for a month and is out of cell contact too:

"what is the connection here between Ozzy & Coach? It might be a stretch, but I think I can sum it up in one word: PARVATI.

I’ll start with Coach first. On Heroes vs. Villains Parvati managed to gain control of the villain tribe even though she was in a weaker alliance initially and she is the reason that Coach was voted out. Well maybe it was Coach’s own fault because he couldn’t stop talking about getting rid of Parvati.

Ozzy hates Parvati. They became friends after Cook Islands and she blindsided him in Fans Vs Favorites. Sure he said at the reunion that they had made up but that is a lot of crap. He hates her. They never speak and have not become friends again. Plus he was going to appear on Heroes vs. Villains but was pulled because he did nothing to hide his distaste for her and, the rumor is, a Parvati loving producer pulled him to protect her. I know that’s a rumor, but I completely buy it."

Andrea's own Twitter account says that she is thinking of going up to Minneapolis over the weekend to visit with a friend.

If this is true and not a smokescreen to cover her get-away, then she's eliminated from consideration as one of the two returnees since DanieuBleau indicated that filming for S23 would start on May 30th.

Seems to be two different sources. Dani's source gave her two names. daffodilca got one name, Coach.

daffodilca @ Sucks:
(05/20/11 01:33 PM)
I know one (I do not know both) returnee and it is a HE and it is not Marty. It will not come as a surprise to anyone that cbs picked him. And once you know this one returnee you will totally be able to guess the second one as there is only one obvious match up for the person I know 100% is returning. Can't really spell it out but if someone guesses I won't deny it.

Note that daffodilca assumes the second name will be an obvious pairing. I would say he/she expects it to be Phillip. Certainly Ozzy is not an obvious match-up.

btw, here is the trailer for Coach's movie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbFZvbderb8&feature=player_embedded

It is funny (or interesting coincidence) that the promo write-up for the movie (from the theater website) mentions redemption:
Gavin soon learns that his only hope for redemption rests in the bridges he burned long ago.

It also states that the band will perform for the opening. It does not promise the lead actor will be there, and it doesn't mention singing.
The band behind 180’s original musical scores, will give acoustic performances at the film’s public debut.
I think the wording is vague enough to allow for the back-up band to be there without Coach.

Dani has had terrific sources, and I tend to rely on what she spoils, but Coach vs. Ozzy is very odd, as Ozzy is Mr. Provider and Challenge Ho whereas Coach is neither.

They've both made out with a female player from HvV. (Or two) That's all I've got. Oh, and they've both been egotistical and arrogant, but is that enough?
ETA -- and they are both Virgos.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"

I read Dani's stuff at skills and well, since she is an extremely well reputed spoiler (with reliable sources), I feel obligated to go ahead and agree with her findings.
Although...
I'm with you OFG, Coach and Ozzy DO NOT sound like a feasible pair.
Specially when, as daffodilca noted, that the name of one would naturally lead us to the name of the other. There is nothing about Coach that leads me to Ozzy.

Coach leads me to Tyson, he leads me to Sierra. He even leads me to Phillip (thanks solely to JP). But Ozzy?

I agree also with the whole 'why Coach?'. He just doesn't seem likely to have the draw of the audience nor the backing from the new castmates. I see him going the way of RussHell.

Ozzy, on the other hand, seems to be the kind they'd want. Hard-working, tribal oriented, physically adept.
Making it very likely he'll make merge and then challenge whore his way to the end. OR even better takes the Matt route through RI but makes better use of the merge to position himself better for final run.

So, if one name leads to another, Ozzy begets...
James? Amanda?

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by Outfrontgirl on 05-27-11 at 07:35 AM
I didn't explain the spoiler logic clearly enough. It's easy to get confused when working with posts spread out on another site. I'll try again.

1) daffodil spoiler says that if you know the one, the other will be obvious, but he/she also says he/she only knows the one name. The second name is a guess.

2) In other posts, daffodilca says that Coach is the name he/she knows. Not Ozzy. So daffodillca is saying Coach is on, and there is a logical match-up we should come up with if we think Coach & _____ .

3) If you're going to use his/her spoiler and try to figure out the second player, you have to start with Coach, not say, who would be obvious with Ozzy. (Daffodilca has no info on Ozzy being on.)

4) Dani at Skills says she has Coach and Ozzy, confirmed, no guesswork to be done.'

5) We have newbie Survivorfan who says that one of the two is NOT on.

Not a spoiler, but I would like to point out that Coach was at the Finale. Rob and Russell were both at the S21 Finale, although the twist was not announced.

Ozzy has not been around at all, far as I know. Nor has Jeff mentioned Ozzy in a long time, that I recall.

Jeff did say he would like to pair Jeff with Phillip.
Jeff did set up the R v R thing well before the Finale where he says the theme was born.

To me, if by chance Dani's spoiler is only 50%, Ozzy looks like the weaker one, in terms of likelihood he has been cast.

If the other player is Phillip, then he was all over the Finale, front and center. That certainly takes care of having him ping the fan radar the night that S23 was announced.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by tribephyl on 05-27-11 at 04:10 PM
No I still believe Dani's stufff. Don't doubt that. But...

daffodil spoiler says that if you know the one, the other will be obvious, but he/she also says he/she only knows the one name. The second name is a guess.

If they only know one name, then how could they possibly know that one name leads to another?

Dani at Skills says she has Coach and Ozzy, confirmed, no guesswork to be done.

Well, this definitely puts an end to the whole 'one name leads to another'. I, again, don't doubt the powers of Dani but it seems that the two names chosen have been plucked from a random pairing generator.
What kind of confusing twisted web do we have to go through in order to get at why Coach and Ozzy are the chosen ones?

The basis for all of this is that despite Dani's stance, I tend to believe only one of those names is correct. Either Coach (with Phillip) or Ozzy (with someone else possibly redeemable).
For me, it's easy to see Ozzy as being a good redemption choice. I simply do not see it within Coach.

Coach & Phillip? Pure stunt casting.
Ozzy & Someone redeemable? Could be better than the original.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"

Are they filming two seasons back to back again? Could Coach be the returnee for one of the seasons and Ozzy be the returnee for the other one? I can't imagine the two of them squaring off - not connected at all.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by Outfrontgirl on 05-27-11 at 10:04 PM
They are filming back to back, but the prevailing rumor for S24 is that it will be a form of All Stars, or Second Chance, or another FvF.

We know that S23 has two returnees, and I would imagine that Dani's spoiler came as an answer to who are the two for S23 -- rather than something like ... "this one will be filming this summer, and this other one will be on one of the two seasons as well."

No one here has jumped on what I think is a great find by daffodilca -- that Coach's conductor series has a guest scheduled to replace him for the concert after filming starts -- even though it's the most important concert of the series and presumably one he would want to conduct.

tribe,
I'm curious why you call it speculation that someone has gone to the trouble to research the Susanville orchestra schedule and find out whether Coach will be at work during filming. (Answer, no, he is going to be absent, no reason given.)

That sort of research effort used to be referred to as spoiling.

Umm, it's the off-season. Give people time to check this out and decide if they want to give a response or not - it's their prerogative to do so. And last I checked, three people replied in relation to your posts about the daffodilca spoiler, which isn't exactly "No discussion of the actual spoiler".

And yes, while it's an interesting find about the guest conductor, it could also be very easily explained by the movie premiere and media tours (what little there is of it) if it turns out that Coach isn't on Survivor. I'm just waiting for more confirmation on this type of thing before I'm ready to pass out the kudos. The idea of Coach being on the next version of Survivor isn't out of left field - I immediately thought of Coach and Phillip when Jiffy announced that there would be two returning Survivors during the finale reunion, and I was the first to post that.

I saw your post about the spoiler, and I'm not sure what you expected me to say - there's good stuff there and I've got nothing to add to it at the moment, most of my good spoiling stuff comes after I've had time to reflect on various points presented out there. I'm sorry that I, for one, didn't snap to attention and formulate a well-thought out reply to supplement, support or disprove the spoiler.

I'm not sure what is there to be irritated about? It's never a waste of time if you thought it was important enough to post. If nobody responds, fine, move on and talk about something else as you know there will always be something to discuss. It's two weeks after a Survivor season has ended, you know how things are on the boards then.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by tribephyl on 05-29-11 at 03:31 AM
I'm sorry for not replying to your news about Coach stepping away from his duty IRL and the substitute conductor is to take over for a big performance that's happening during the prospected filming time.
It certainly does add more weight to the likelyhood that Coach is indeed on S23.
But I already felt like that was being shoved down my throat anyways. Coach is a yes. Ozzy is a yes. Blah blah blah.
Do we just sit back and wait now?
Nothing else to hope for?
It still doesn't make sense to me. I can't help but hope that someone else will be chosen. Regardless of Jiffy's wants and desires.

I may be an old fuddy-duddy but the reason I still call it speculation is because it hasn't even begun to start filming.
In the big scope of things if it hasn't happened yet, it may not turn out like we had predicted.
Coach could be 'a firm lock' to be on but if something unforseen happens (or gawd forbid the sources were wrong) before a single frame is captured, what happens then?

I don't mean to come across as mad, I'm not. But I would ask that we continue to celebrate the spoiling but not at the cost of open conversation. Whether subjective, speculative or snarky.
It's off season and there is no real place to discuss the upcoming season without ruining it for someone else in a different forum.

They are already in Samoa doing their pre-game interviews, and filming begins Monday.

So now is the time to notice the sound of DAWS not DAWing.

I'm not convinced that Ozzy is on. Dani's source says so, but I haven't seen any "field" observations. I don't know where Ozzy should be or could be, but someone else might?

Re the other forums, I haven't checked Bashers, but are they not all over Coach as a strong possibility? Jeff said two would return, so it's not a spoiler for people to make guesses and wish lists and hate lists, is it?

It has begun, tribe.
They are already in Samoa doing their pre-game interviews, and filming begins Monday.

This I didn't know. Thank you.

So, we keep our eyes open for Ozzy non-sightings back here in the states.

As far as the continued "go to bashers" insistence is concerned, I feel that speculation and spoiling belong together. Bashing is totally different, yes, but levity along with speculation and spoiling should not be ruining anyone's experience. Let's not let the rift between sourced spoiling and old-fashioned evidence hunting raise it's ugly head again this season. We CAN all get along if everyone remains tolerant of everyone else's input.
Above all, if it bugs you, skip it. Don't respond. Move on.
As I will do now...

Thanks for sharing those twitlinks.
I applaud your stance.
I am twitterless (and hope to remain so), so this is an endeavor I will have to sit on the side-lines and wish you well with.

Well, it's just an idea - trying to make sense of a Coach-Ozzy match up. I can see both of them being brought back. I just don't get the idea of bringing them back together. Thought perhaps one for each season would explain the rumor (and that's all it is in my mind - not definite despite Dani's track record) and the contradiction (in my mind at least).

S24 being another FvF or All Stars... blech. Unless they actually go all the way back to the beginning of the series. But if it's just people who were in the last few season, I would not be happy. Give me Colleen, Greg, Mike Skupin, Lex again, Rob C., Brian the porn star, etc.

You know what's in store for future seasons? Teams! We will have some veterans designated as Coaches (Rudy, Jimmy Johnson, Jan, Steve), they will draft from the pool of previous players and add some rookies each year from casting.

Burnett will ask governments to build him an island or he'll threaten to move his frnachise to another ocean. Then, we will have free agency, a salary cap, lock-outs and strikes! Who will be the first Survivor accused of doping? I mean, besides Crystal...

Thanks, dabs.
Corvis, I'm starting to get on the Ozzy bandwagon.
Phillip is still tweeting, and he should be gone by now. Someone on Sucks said he would be better saved for All Stars, as he's basically served up as first boot if he's the one returnee on the tribe.

At least Coach had enough of some kind of charisma to get in a good solid alliance his first season, and he could have done it the second season if he hadn't sat on the fence. That's more than Phillip managed. He cut a deal with Rob and that was all the cooperation he managed, and he sucked at all the challenges. He would be toast.

I think any tribe would want to keep Ozzy for starters. Just like Rob, he is a dynamo in challenges. You can't get rid of someone that useful -- if he can manage not to be too arrogant. (Maybe he got humbled by his last exit?)

Someone (I forget who) mentioned that Jeff did an interview on cuts from HvV and said they cut Ozzy. That Jeff said "Maybe we've seen enough of Ozzy." Or words to that effect. I never read that interview, but it sounds like Jeff lost his mancrush on Ozzy, which makes it a bit odd to see Ozzy picked out of so many candidates.

But maybe it's true.

Seeing Ozzy return would be great.
And your comparisons of Coach and Phillip are right on. Coach is redeemable. Phillip is fodder.
I'm coming around to this Ozzy and Coach matchup. Slowly.

He even leads me to Phillip (thanks solely to JP).

If Coach is going to be on the next Redemption Island Series, than my money would be on Phillip returning. Jiffy is the one that pitted Rob and RussHole together...said he could have a whole season of them, and low and behold that's what the premise was indeed.

Jeff ranted about Phillip all season long, and kept saying things like "can you imagine if Coach and Phillip were next door neighbors"...blah, blah, blah. If Coach is coming back, I'd be shocked to see anyone but Phillip...

Regarding the whole Redemption Island Twist....I think it had to be borne out of their favorite alpha male, challenge whores that need redemption after getting knocked out by some twist of fate...the Robfadda's, the Terry's, the Ozzy's, the Rob Cesternino's, the Bobby Jon's. As for the girls, how about the Ami Cusacks, the Kathy O'Brien's, the Stephanie LaGrossa's...

OTOH, it seems to boil down to who Jeff is infatuated with....Coach, Phillip, Ralph, Big Tom, Dolly...and such. We'll see!

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by tribephyl on 05-27-11 at 03:56 PM
Actually, Rob (at the reunion) said that if he had another chance to kick Russell's azz off the island, he would jump at it.
THAT is what JP glommed onto and the redemption idea was born.
IOW, the two of them started it. The producers just followed up.

For RI2 it was JP who mentioned that Coach vs. Phillip would be fun. Not that the two of them have a rivalry. How could they?

I can agree that both Phillip and Coach need redemption. But they both (outside of JP's unnatural attraction to them) don't fit the model of what would actually work. Again, neither one of them has the support of massive audience members and it's doubtful the new castaways will give them a chance either.

I fully agree with your assessment of what a returnee should possess. But it seems as if the returnees, this time, have none of those qualities.
I loathe the idea of a season with Phillip and Coach. The only saving grace would be knowing (before any of it even starts) that neither of them have the ability to become a valued person on their tribes and will likely both be voted off early, with NO chance at redemption because they suck at challenges too.

No one likes the idea of Coach and Phillip among the diehard fans, but JP likes the idea, and that's what matters.

The whole line that the Rob vs. Russell season was set up at the Finale is BS from the producers.

The original idea was Russell vs. Richard Hatch. They set this up by shooting an ad spot with the two of them mouthing off, did you see it?

Then Hatch couldn't get leave from the IRS to leave the country, same as with HvV where they wanted him. Rob was suggested as a replacement. He jumped at it.

The whole thing at the HvV Finale where Russell and Rob challenged each other was staged, and rather painfully fake, IMHO.
They don't make season-defining decisions for seasons filming that summer at mid-May Finales. That is way too close to production.

Likewise, the decision to have two returnees in Season 23 and to repeat RI was probably made back before Season 22 even premiered.

here are the rest of daffoldilca's posts that aren't admittedly all spec. (Leaving out spec on S24 because he says he knows nothing about 24 even being A-S.)
_____________

all this speculation about matt being on S23 is funny because i know 100% one of the returnees. i have a friend who is a good friend of this returnee. i do not know both returnees just one. and producers would never put matt with this returnee. would be a complete mismatch.

i can say that it appears the producers and jeff are going for the casual viewing audience on this one cuz HE is not a good player at all. just a memorable asshole and camera hog. all the true fans want a good player and there has been lots of speculation about what pairs could be returning. you will guess this guy easily if you think like a producer. they don't care about good players just ratings.
______________

"Please not Rupert or Coach."

What was your first clue? ##### or camera hog?
________________

again i ask what the point of a spoiler thread is when everyone suspects that all spoilers are educated guesses. funny to me. no matter. it's 100% that he will be on so that's a done deal. what we can speculate on is who will be matched with him. cause i have no clue. although an "educated guess" would be phillip or maybe a different more interesting twist would be to match him with a woman. That would be what I'd like to see.

______________

I agree with all of this. SEG is looking for characters next season to carry the ratings and ones that are mocked work for that. I think you will see the coach of tocantins because the coach of HvsV was boring and not memorable. People only really remember him from Tocantins. Phillip is current so he is fresh. It could just be a season where the producers get the most mileage out of these two characters and even if there is an early boot which i think is guaranteed they will have gotten watchers and just maybe some good players will arise from the newbies to carry the rest of the season.
__________

Would you like to explain how you know Coach is returning?

Nope, can't, I'd be in deep #####.
___________

Those are all good questions. Based on the info i have it seems that Coach on S23 is for sure but if they film back 2 back then who knows, producers could switch at the last minute. I doubt Coach has any say into making decisions about what season to be on to accomodate his schedule. have you seen the trailer for his movie, maybe he doesn't want to be at the premiere hahahaha. But like someone else said if he isn't at the premiere on june 17 then it's obvious. I do agree that Matt and Andrea will be back at some point. I do not have info on them though, just speculation.
______________

Wouldn't he be contractually obligated to be at the premiere of 180? I am still not sold on the idea of Coach vs Phillip.

Good question about the contract. but this is a local B movie at best. it is premiered in missouri. who knows if there even was a contract.
____________

Maybe they will bring back Sierra because she did almost win fan favorite so I can see her fitting in well with a tribe of newbies.

I would love to see Sierra, she would fit the bill perfectly.
___________

Do you know how long Coach has known that he will be going to Samoa for s23? If not, when did you find out he is going?

No to the first question. I found out via third party a few weeks ago.
__________

Have you ever actually talked to Coach?

No. Is that a requirement for a spoiler? I trust my private source completely.
_________

Agree that anything could change last minute. Producers could get all the players in Samoa and then decide there to switch or cut people. Has happened before. As of a few weeks ago though it was a sure thing. I do not know why he would miss his movie but lets face it if you had a chance to be on Survivor would you turn it down for an opening of local made movie in missouri? I wouldn't.
___________

If coach is doing S23 which he is then he will not go to the movie premiere. why does everyone think that the movie premiere proves he is not available for Survivor? If he wants to do Survivor bad enough he will miss the movie premiere for it. It's not like the movie is a big deal. Local film makers in missouri and premiering in Missouri. The trailer is awful.
_________

As Antithesis suggests, Coach for S24 makes more sense. The film project is a big deal for Coach. He is pursuing fame. From our point of view it might look like his pursuit is failed, lame and futile but I think it would look far different from his point of view. A S24 in a FvF or HvV format with filming starting around July 28th might work better for Coach, or he may pass on even an S24 invite.

Anything is possible because producers can change things at the final last minute. My source was positive about S23 but that does not mean it could not change next week. 39, I agree that for someone like Coach, fame even if it is a B movie is a big deal. Don't agree that Coach would pass on 2 invites for Survivor.

I checked the website for susanville symphony where coach conducts a orchestra in the small town he lives. there is a concert on June 10. It is the last concert of the season and from what the website said is the most popular one. if you read about the concert it says that they have a special guest conductor for this concert. looks like coach won't be there for his concert. checked his twitter and there hasn't been a post there since last week.

If I were in a movie, and it was local, it would be a big deal to me, and I'm not Coach.

However, in the long term, the movie is helped a lot more by Coach getting a 3rd crack at Survivor than it would be by him showing up for the premiere. Survivor is basically promotional work for the movie; so it is likely that even a contract wouldn't bar him from a return even if there was one.

First spoiler is probably the best spoiler, and Coach vs. Phillip was the first word we heard.

I don't see this as being Redemption for either. This is just a straight sellout by MB, making us watch Phillip two frickin seasons in a row.

So far, with only two similar seasons as precedents though, they have paired two returnees who had a connection.

First time: Stephanie and BobbyJon (Palau/Ulong connection)
Second time: Rob and Russell (HvV/Villains tribe connection)

Both times, the connection involved a Spring season airing followed up by a summer filming.

They're almost certainly going to do another All Stars soon, quite likely filming this summer as S24.

So while it would make sense to reach back to the Cooks and Micronesia (Ozzy, Jonathan) for an All Stars, it is unusually far back for them to go with the two returnees concept. Plus Ozzy and Coach have absolutely no connection, and there has always been some sort of tie.

With Coach and Phillip, there is a tie, weird as it is. They both tell far-fetched stories that are questioned as to whether they are "special" or special BS. They both identify with indigenous peoples' culture and values. Neither did well in challenges. They were both dismissed as eccentric nut-jobs. And Jeff drools over them (which he doesn't over Ozzy).

Brenda and Marty were mentioned by Probst as choices from S21 for a future All Stars. They COULD be suitable for S23 returnees, as they are recent and have a connection.

BUT, it is most likely that one of the two will be Coach, and neither Brenda nor Marty pair well with that. (There is other info that suggests Coach, but it's not my info and I can't post it. I find it makes a really good case added to what has been posted.)

Coach last played in the season airing Spring 2010 (I hate even saying "last played" as if that's a normal thing). So I think he is on the aged end of the spectrum, and the other returnee should be MORE recent.

Also, let's consider in what way Coach needs a shot at Redemption. Why was he voted out of HvV? He really did nothing other than fail to commit to a side. He and Jerri were swing votes, and Jerri committed to Russell. Coach didn't. He and Russell shared a cross. Gawd, I hope it is not Russell.

Basically, Coach has lost twice because he failed to play the game as a game, and instead played by his own code. (That is not an all-encompassing analysis, and could be expressed in other terms, for sure.)

Is there someone else with a similar story?
Phil also played an oddball game, so I would say he could work.
Anyone else from last season who failed to play? (Other than Robbots?)
Hmm. Well, Matt is the most obvious candidate for couldn't play cutthroat Survivor because his beliefs got in the way.

I do think we will see David again, whether in 23 or 24 I don't know. I expect they will ask Mike to come back for 24.

Another spin they could do on Redemption, which makes me want to gag but I could fully see it, is to bring back a Zapatera who needs "redemption" because of "foolishly" throwing a challenge to boot Russell. That would work for David. (I don't see them pairing ultra-strong Mike against weak Coach.)

ETA Matt appears to be fresh home from NYC, not in Samoa. Scratch that.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by Flowerpower on 05-31-11 at 05:01 PM
Yes, OFG, I got the vibe from Jiffy that he would love to see David come back. Also, I think Grant would be a great choice as well....he needs some redemption, I think...Mike is another "hero" type that they seem to love....Matt, imo, has had enough "redemption"...

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by Outfrontgirl on 05-29-11 at 00:30 AM
>>> Jonathan perhaps?

I have heard, and see no reason to doubt it, that Jonathan was going to be on HvV, and had been asked and answered -- until they (casting) decided to fix the thing for Parvarti. Jonathan was out to vote Parvarti out first in Micronesia, and they were enemies in the Cooks.

It would be wonderful to see Penner get a second chance after that terrible infection took him out, but it might be more likely to happen in a true Second Chance season, which has been discussed for a long time.

I question whether they would out Penner on as mentor for a tribe, because Penner does not particularly respect Jeff when he plays. He talks back to Jeff at challenges and at TC. He is a more respected member of SAG (IMHO). So I just don't see Probst signing on for giving Penner that much prominence in a season. Probst likes wacky, but he does not like to have his authority challenged.

Note that Rob was never anything but respectful to Jeff; he was a company man all the way.

Ditto for Fairplay. Jeff cannot stand him and is not going to go for JFP as star of the show.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by Round Robin on 05-31-11 at 02:13 AM
Somebody else I doubt you'll ever see back is Jane. That's because it was her accusation of Sash trying to bribe her that caused a lot of problems surrounding S21. Probst is unlikely as hell to ever allow anybody back who caused so much trouble, no matter if they'd make good TV or not, and the trouble Jane caused made the sourced spoiling of S21 that much bigger of a problem.

If you want to have anywhere near the impact of B-Rob and RussHell stepping off that chopper, then you have to have someone like Coach and Ozzy back. They will have that desired effect on the contestants. Also, they are both capable leaders, the kind of players that their tribes won't necessarily want to boot immediately, even after B-Rob did what he did.

On the other hand, there is virtually no connection between them nor is there any real story of Redemption. Of course, I'm sure production will FIND a redemption story for both.

I hope if Ozzy is indeed coming back that he raises his confessional game. He isn't near the automatic entertainment that B-Rob, Russell or Coach are.

Possible storyline ideas for Redemption...:

Ozzy: Punted out of Fans vs. Favorites with an Idol pretty much in his back pocket... the first of a couple to have that happen to them that season...

Coach: One more Dragon to slay, try to Redeem himself from sitting on the fence in the Villain war between Rob and Russell during Heroes vs. Villains...

"RE: TDT "
Posted by tribephyl on 05-31-11 at 08:02 PM
Ozzy came in second to Yul. That is redemptive enough.
His getting bit by the black widow club and leaving with the idol in FvF seals it.
In need of Redemption.

Coach never got to finals but was on everyones radar from the very get go. He has played two borderline games. Strategic and Physical, just not powerful in either. Add to that, socially awkward.
He will take leadership seriously. No doubt there.
But will he take the game seriously? Has he truly learned the social lesson?
Redemption there too.

You can say that again. Ozzy was a boring, arrogant kid. If I remember correctly, Samoa was a place where they couldn't do any sea challenges so what will Ozzy do? And, if Coach and Ozzy get to the merge, they are more likely to team up than tear each other apart so that will be another reason to vote them out early. I smell another dud.

If the wanted boring, they would have been better to match-up Coach and Brendan again...Or Sierra.

Ozzy is my all-time favorite, so put me down as happy to see him back. Heck, if he is able to win, I'll change my mind about the whole RI twist (not really, but I'll be ok with it for the one & only time if it contributes to Ozzy winning). I thought he should have won his season - that was the one where the stupid HII twist was first introduced, if I'm not mistaken, and Yul was able to use it to guarantee himself F3. Bunch of b.s. -- but that's another topic.

I also admit I stopped watching FvF when Ozzy was voted out & it became obvious that Pavarti was going to win -- Pavarti, while she grew on me during HvV, shouldn't have been on FvF in the first place, as she was nobody's "favorite" from her original season. (I also contend Ozzy got scr@wed on his edit during that season).

So, if this is true & Ozzy is coming back, I'll be all in for S23 with bells on my shoes.

Once again, Kiki, you and I are seeing eye to eye! Couldn't agree more with your statement regarding Ozzy in his first season. I love Yul, don't get me wrong, but come on....if not for Ozzy the Aitu Four would have been toast, and it would have been as easy for the Raro's to just simply pick them off one right after the other.

Ozzy really sealed the deal with the last super-challenge where the final four battled it out, and it was supposedly the hardest puzzle they've ever done, and Ozzy smoked Yul at it. Ozzy should have over-whelmingly won that season, imo. So, I agree, he is in some need of redemption. And, that's not even considering the debacle that was the Fans vs Favorites season.

I'll take some bells for my shoes, too!

Wow..Ozzy was on my wish list! I really hope this spoiler is correct. The one thing Ozzy has going for him, is his pure desire and satisfaction of being out "in the wild", his providing skills are amazing. I remember at one of the reunion shows when Jeff asked him about what it was he liked about survivor, and he said something to the effect, that it was the elements and living by your own means and hands..it was so poignant.

He will need to improve his strategizing and social skills, and hopefully he watched BRob. I think he will have the same rock star effect if he has a young goup..but may have problems if he gets a Zapatera like tribe..but then knowing he may "matt" himself on RI to the end will be something to consider before they vote him out.

Coach I'm not a fan of...so whatever..

Ozzy would do really well on Redemption Island - both surviving and in the challenges. I kind of hope he gets voted out and then does a Matt and stays around for a while. I'd like to see what he does on RI. But he'd have to win immunity when he returned or he'd be booted again.

ETA: On second thought, Ozzy might not do so well with the carnival type challenges they had last season!

Coach will reinvent himself - again. I wonder what tattoo he'll get for Survivor 23!

I certainly don't know anything about Ozzy going, so my getting on board is more accurately a cessation of total resistance to the mismatched pair.

Ozzy has not been online since it started, but his online presence was sporadic. Coach has made arrangements to be absent during filming, so I have no doubt about Coach.

btw, Phillip was in a live chat today, so the GOOD news is -- Coach and Phillip are not the two getting off the helicopter.

Someone on Sucks who claims to know, said that the 23 cast was shipped out and put on communication blackout early, prior to the Finale. The point being that they would not have heard Jeff announce that there would be two returning players. They would also not know that Rob won for sure. They would not know for sure that RI is returning. I do not know if this person's info is correct. I'm merely sharing that someone insists it was handled this way. So we MAY see another "surprise" entry.

With 16 players and unequal gender match-up, it shouldn't really be a surprise.

David said tonight in chat that he did not think another group would let two returnees near the end again after watching S22. He said that an All Stars or another Fans vs. Faves would be the only way returnees would stand a chance. That was his opinion.

He also said that Zapatera booted Russell because he was in the eyes of the majority a bad person. It was a moral decision more than a game decision. He said that he didn't think Zapatera would have booted Rob early on, because Rob had the social skills to integrate.

He said of Coach and Phillip:
Coach and phillip both have the ability to be totally normal, Coach just chooses to exercise it more often.

Here's an article that spells a lot of it out - I think it is Ozzy/Coach and I'm pretty sure they wanted more like a Coach/Philip combo.

Thanks for posting SurvivorFan...the article makes a lot of sense, but I agree that Ozzy was probably not the first choice for a counterpart to Coach, more likely a last minute alternate.

Thanks for the article. That guy is funny!

I would have preferred Ozzy in an All Stars, because he wouldn't have been as much of a pre-merge boot choice. But since it's only his third time..who knows if he doesn't win S. 23, maybe they will bring him AGAIN for S. 24, afterall Boston Rob did it in his fourth try. : )

It may not be relevant in this case, but something to keep in mind going forward. In light of various reports being posted without reference to their original source, we should take care as to what constitutes reporting of other people's spoilers and what is independent confirmation of a spoiler.

TDT never retired his survivometer; it was updated regularly last season. He has included Coach and Ozzy on his survivometer for South Pacific, but the references only point to previously posted information by daffoldica, DanieuBleau and maxxfisher.

A couple new posts from daffodilca that are interesting:

The source that told me about Coach being on S23 also told me that it was not originally planned for Coach to be on S23 but was a last minute thing. My source has no clue that this forum exists and will never look here to see what I've said but I have kept many details of what I know about the Coach spoiler to myself due to a close relationship with my source.

Most of the details are not important but because of what I know I don't think coach or phillip were originally planned for S23. I do think it is possible that when they made the last minute change they could have put Phillip with Coach and then changed it again. Maybe Phillip turned them down for S23 but where they came up with Ozzy I'll never know.
--------

It's still a mystery to me how Ozzy became the confirmed 2nd returnee because I have not seen that traced to a source and don't know where the original spoiler on that came from or if there ever was one. Still wonder if it really is Ozzy.

I knew about Coach doing S23 at the last minute which explains him dropping all his plans like his movie premiere to leave quickly. If Ozzy is on then he probably didn't have much notice either.

I would not be surprised if the format of S23 (16 +2 returns) was a last minute change from all newbies. Ozzy is an unusual choice but when you think about it so is Coach. No comparison to the BRob/Russell pairing.

--------

To summarize, Coach was called up at the last minute, which explains why he had planned appearances that were canceled. The spec is that the returnee idea was last minute, although it could be as KB theorized other returnees who were asked first.

My own spec -- maybe they planned to have newbies and lost their nerve that a new cast could carry a season. They think returnees equal ratings.

That is an interesting theory. What they fail to recognize is that the returnee ends up hogging the limelight (not necessarily their fault..but editor's choice), and new potentially interesting people are ignored. Philip and possibly Rooster ended up being shown only because of their antics and not necessarily because of their back stories. Matt was shown only because he was on RI for so long and with his faith story that conveniently tied in with the theme of show this year.

We never got to hear the strategies of Mike or David in detail; and Krista and Stephanie may have had a chance if not for their short lived alliance with Russell.

Although I love Ozzy, I sort of hope that both he and Coach go early, so we can see how these new set of newbies fare.

Here's Andy Denhart at Reality Blurred's article about Ozzy and Coach returning:

P.S. Note the part about Probst responding at Sucks.

Beatles is one of the finest posters at Sucks and his comments about the decline of the show were very well expressed. Jeff made a nice gesture in responding but he still showed that air of superiority, of knowing what is best, that was the driving force behind the letter. His response was mostly: "We understand but we won't do a thing about it."

ETA: Could SEG use a private jet to get Coach to his movie premiere and back?

A quick bit of research indicated that it's about an 11-hour or so direct flight from Los Angeles to Samoa, so in order to accommodate Coachebag's appearance at the movie premiere, we're likely talking about 24-28 hours away from the game. I'd think that would be too much of an impact on the integrity of the game to let Coachebag fly away for a bit then go right back into the game.

...integrity of the game...

Sorry, that line, applied to Survivor, made me laugh until I nearly lost my breath.

The premiere isn't even in LA, somewhere in the mid-west if I remember, so it's even longer. Players have spent a couple of days on Exile Island so, it could be rigged...sorry, I meant worked out.

The premiere of Ben "Coach" Wade's movie came and went and it appears he did not attend.

This post on his Facebook wall is from a FB friend who attended the premiere and was surprised to find out he wasn't there...

I guess Tanya doesn't read the boards ...
Well he is either playing the game in Samoa, playing with Dragons II at loser lodge, or he's had a wake-up call about his lack of awesomeness and is holed up quivering with shame that he made this movie.

#3 seems highly unlikely

Well if he wasn't at the premiere, that pretty much pours the concrete on him being on S23. I'd like to know for sure if he and Ozzy were the original 2 returnees that Marko wanted or if he wanted somebody else.

Make better sense. Two of Survivors biggest story tellers - odd balls. The story arch makes sense.

Coach and Ozzy? No connection what so ever. Neither knows each other and both were totally different type of players. I doubt that pairing very much.

Besides was Ozzy really that interesting of a personality? I personally am sick of him. Never really sparked my interest other than the challenge run. To me he is a yawner.

100% I spoke to one of the two today and they ARE the returnees. CBS will be releasing the info soon enough. Apparently Russell Hantz's nephew is a pretty funny guy. I don't think there was too much interaction between the two returnees, or at least one didn't come away with great feelings for the other.

Welcome to the Boards Sugar! Glad to have you. Over in these parts we want to know. However, we need you to be specific and name names. Who did you talk to and what was the occasion. We need proof, I suppose. Please elaborate on your post. Many thanks, and please, feel free to stick around.

With the semi-official annoucement(Dalton Ross-EW) of Coach and Ozzy as the Returnees...comes a 'Behind The Scenes video that shows Coach joining the blue Upolu Tribe and Ozzy joining the red Savaii tribe. Per the EW article, which tribe they join is determined by eggs w/tribal color coded paint inside. Additionally in the Behind The Scenes video, they show Coach and Ozzy competing in a 3D puzzle stack(pyramid) chal. Maybe related to the tribal choice???

What do they have in common?

Personally, Ozzy coming backs bores me. He was a one dimensional player. Maybe women like him because he is cute, but he bores me.

Actually Coach and Philip had a lot mroe in common and the idea of having on e story teller against another I thought was a good idea, but now that they have wasted Coach here...the appeal of Coach vs Philip is now gone.

"RE: Coach and Ozzy?"
Posted by dabo on 08-26-11 at 11:14 AM
My guess, the warrior angle. Ozzy in the past was always strong in challenges, not so good at the rest of the game. Honestly, it's a stick! with a face!, at least it was good for a laugh. For Coach the warrior is part of his self-fabricated persona, the mental game. To whatever extent he gets the other players to buy into his worldview, that's pretty much his whole game.
