I know he's not SBOT's favorite (he's not mine), but ESPN Page 2 Sports Guy Bill Simmons (does he do ANYthing besides watch TV?) has become a fan of The Contender.

Hi Cygnus X1 LOL nice article.

In response to your comment after reading this article it sure looks like this guy watches nothing but TV.

He does make alot of valid points in his overall statements.

I began reading from the top and got bored then began reading from the bottom up. lol

"Just hope they realize that viewers are burned out on reality shows, so there's a good chunk of people who probably haven't even given "The Contender" a chance yet." True, true!

"Which raises another question: Could this be the show that gets casual fans into boxing again? Between sleazy promoters, shaky judging decisions, pricey pay-per-views, all the different championship belts, the lack of personable fighters and everything else, Americans don't have a connection with boxing the way they once did. Most sports fans wouldn't recognize Bernard Hopkins if he were sitting on their laps, and he was probably the defining fighter of the past decade. When was the last time the sport roped in someone like the Sports Gal, who was crying by the end of the Najai Turpin episode last week? See, that's the thing about boxing – since there's no structure to the sport, younger fighters don't get marketed properly, if they get marketed at all, so we never develop a connection to them. The sad reality of this show is that some of these boxers will end up being more famous (in the short-term) than Jermain Taylor, the best fighter in that division other than Hopkins."

True, true.!

Again thanks for posting this article Cygnus X1, the shiat was funny

Thanks, Contender, and nice to meet ya!

This is one show I probably wouldn't mind watching, except that I don't have cable, and I live just far enough from two NBC affiliates to be unable to get either via antenna.

I have to agree with Simmons for a change that, from what I've seen here, it looks like EPMB with Sly and Sugar Ray (FROM! . . . nearby Palmer Park, MD!) are seeing an opportunity to get people to care about boxing again, a noble sport that's been taken over by ignoble types of all sorts. We need human faces, or else no one will care anymore.

(Sheesh, I sound like I'm channeling Howard Cosell or something. If he were still around, I wonder what he'd think of this show.)

Best fight I saw in recent years: Bowe-Holyfield ?II?, which went the distance, with Bowe winning on points.
