"HUGE NEWS: new reality show exclusively at SB.COM....casting applications being taken right now!"

Posted by shakes the clown on 05-10-01 at 07:59 PM
....well, I've figured out my summer project (besides being a full fledged media whore that is). It is with great pleasure that I bring you the inaugural SB.Com Celebrity Member Survivor!!

That's right, 16 of you will be chosen by yours truly to participate in the first ever SB.Com Survivor. This is NOT a fantasy game...this is for real.

Every week I will submit a detailed summary of the week's episode much in the same way I did for the regular, boring, no personality Survivor. Only this show is all about you guys!

There will be drama, there will be alliances, there will be backstabbing, starvation, sex, chocolate, crying and in the end, victory for the sole survivor!

Now, to answer the question you've all been waiting for....How do I get on this fabulous show? Easy, all you have to do is fill out a simple application. The applaication will ask some very personal questions, but your responses MUST be made public as you learn the first lesson in being a media whore...your life is not your life anymore, its ours!

Now, keep something else in mind, even if you don't apply for the show, you still might be selected anyway as I have determined that anybody who has ever posted on this forum is immediately eligible. I'm looking for 16 dynamic, unique and hopefully conflicting personalities and I won't take no for an answer.

Because of the secrecy of the project, the location and the cast will not be revealed until the first summary...however, I do not have airtight security on the set and I expect possible spoilers to emerge and be posted on the board.

I know you people love my summaries (I hope) but, now here's your chance to be a part of them!

Without further ado, the application: Please respond with quotes so I can keep track of your answers accordingly.

Background questions

1. Age

2. Marital Status

3. Kids?

4. Employment?

5. Educational background?

5.5 Military background?

6. Intersting employment background?

7. Gender?

8. Social Security Number and major credit card # (just kidding

Survivor questions

9. List the contestant(s) from SurvivorII that you admire the most?

10. Now the one(s) you admire the least?

11. If you were to make the show, what would your strategy be?

12. Cite an example where you have been ruthless?

13. What special skill(s) would you bring to your tribe?

fun facts

14. Describe your most embarrasing moment?

15. Ever experienced that not so fresh feeling? (just kidding)

16. Favorite Food?

17. Poster on the board you would most like to have visit you if you won a "visit from family member" Reward Challenge (posters already in game will not be eligible, but answer will be updated accordingly if need be)?

18. Favorite Movie? (may list more than one)

19. Favorite book? (may list more than one)

20. Would you sleep with Shakes the clown for a guaranteed spot in the final 2?

21. List five items you would like to bring as a luxury item? (if selected, I will choose one of the items from the list)(No survival items!)

The show will be shot at the same place as all the rest of the Survivor shows, a sound stage in Los Angeles...right Survivor Dawg?

And remember one thing, even if you don't apply you still might find yourself selected and then it will be at the author's descretion to fabricate your background as he sees fit...so I suggests you fill out the applications or else run the risk of being subjected to tabloid-style journalism.

P.S. I'll be posting this thread on every board (sorry GT) cause I don't want anyone to miss out and I really don't know where this goes yet.

This sounds fun, Shakes!

I have a few questions though.

1. To repeat Ice and Vamps question, where do we send the app?

2. Is this going to be the typical High School "clique" scenario, where all the "popular" people get to play the game? (Yes, I read your post, but find it hard to believe that you won't edit the game {MB} to favor those more fortunate.

3. What do we win, besides an autographed 8x10 glossy of "your's truely", from Love Boat?

.....everyone, and I repeat everyone, has a chance to be casted for the show...but, on the flip side, I want all the readers in the community to be able to identify with the characters so I will be leaning towards selecting the stronger personalities on this board....BUT, that doesn't translate to mean the most popular people on the board....I'm talking about the people who stand out on the boards, the ones that everyone know.

I consider you to be a strong personality on this board...you post on the spoilers, fanatics, bashers and off-topic...you have inspired both praise and flames, and you always post your opinion....in a nutshell, everyone knows you! That's a good thing when applying to this game because I am trying to construct a story based on my exaggerated interpretation of the way these people would act in the game, therefore I need people in the game who we have gotten a chance to know and read their personalities.

I'm not looking for a show of "Good guys" meaning people that all get along...where's the drama in that?

...well, that goes without saying...but based on the popularity of the game, I'll discuss some prize options w/ Webby and other people on the board and come up with something...plus, the winner receives the most coveted prize of all, the title of "ULTIMATE SURVIVOR"

Additionally, read my other post on this thread and you'll see that I do NOT decide the final winner...we will have a live Final TC in a chat room where the jury will vote on the final 2!

BTW, haven't had a chance to post in your other thread, but just for the record, I'm leaning towards the flaiming evil clown head...but only if I can get a smaller copy of it with just the head showing.

Where do I
>send my application?

...if you want to be a media-whore, you have to learn the first lesson....NO PRIVACY...so post your apps in this thread.

Besides, this will give everyone a chance to see the inner workings of the whole casting process...I might even post the fina cast interviews when I get around to them.

I'll also post a lot more info about the way this is gonna work tomorrow night, but basically your involvement ENDS when you fill out your app....the rest is up to me..you just have to sit back and wait for the summaries to see if you made the show, and then to see how you are edited.

One thing I will tell you, the final two will be live in a chat room on SB (written summary to follow of course) and the jury will be required to vote for the winner...so I don't decide the final winner.

"Dangerkitty's application"
Posted by dangerkitty on 05-11-01 at 11:11 AM
Here goes....

Background questions

1. Age
40 - but in a non-leathery-skin, bodacious-ta-tas-I-was-born-with kinda way.

2. Marital Status
Yes, to Fritz the Cat

3. Kids?
No, unless you count our two glorious kitty cats (and we do)

4. Employment?
Self-employed: Massage therapist, personal trainer, personal coach, yoga and Chi Kung instructor, accomplished goof-off. Available for professional wine-taster position.

5. Educational background?
B.A. in Political Science, minors in Theater and Psychology (finally, my education will be put to use!)

5.5 Military background?
None.

6. Interesting employment background?
Skilled extra (martial arts) for the TV show "Silk Stalkings".

7. Gender?
Female

8. Social Security Number and
major credit card # (just
kidding

Survivor questions

9. List the contestant(s) from
SurvivorII that you admire the
most?
Tina, Rodger

10. Now the one(s) you
admire the least?
Jerri, Mitchell

11. If you were to
make the show, what would
your strategy be?
Utilize my skills of excellent memory, good listener/confidante, humor. I'm not a good liar at all (well, if someone really pisses me off and/or deserves it, maybe I could learn...) And a few tricks that I ain't tellin' here!

12. Cite an example where
you have been ruthless.
Found out my boyfriend (NOT my current husband!)was two-timing me, then she and I got together and talked it all out while he was on a business trip. She called him at his hotel, asked him to call her right back, and I answered the phone. This is how he found out that we had met.(believe me, it felt delightfully evil at the time!)

13. What special skill(s) would
you bring to your tribe?
Dirty jokes and shoulder rubs, facilitated stretching, and I am a black belt (if there is a Jerri-type around, I'll kick her ass).

fun facts

14. Describe your most embarrasing
moment?
You want me to pick just one? OK, here's an oldie: I told "the Barbie doll joke" to my boyfriend's boss after too many maragritas in Mexico. (Margaritas in Mexica are, um, "different" than margaritas in the states; and the Barbie doll joke is visual/tactile, so I can't tell it here).

15. Ever experienced that not
so fresh feeling? (just kidding) You mean other than right now?

16. Favorite Food?
Good red wine, pasta with lots of fresh Parmesan, and Tiramisu.

17. Poster on the board
you would most like to
have visit you if you
won a "visit from family
member" Reward Challenge (posters already
in game will not be
eligible, but answer will be
updated accordingly if need be)?
George Tirebiter

18. Favorite Movie? (may list
more than one)
In no particular order: Young Frankenstein, Groundhog Day, Sling Blade, Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty....

19. Favorite book? (may list more
than one)
In no particular order: Pride and Prejudice, The Four Agreements, Cold Mountain, Tao Teh Ching, Oh,The Places You'll Go....

20. Would you sleep with
Shakes the clown for a
guaranteed spot in the final
2?
Sleep? Would we actually get any sleep?

21. List five items you
would like to bring as
a luxury item? (if selected,
I will choose one of
the items from the list)(No
survival items!)
Sunglasses
Massage roller
Cribbage board with cards
Scrunchie
Toothbrush

Shakes, you are one of my huge exceptions to this rule (although it seems like everyone here should have the common sense to look for your summaries on the "Episode Summaries" page. . .). And this plan of yours is so humongous, so creatively, psychotically wondrous, it's bound to be better than the actual show!! I'm already laughing hysterically.

I only hope it doesn't cause rifts in our otherwise happy family (backstabbing--even in fun--has a way to carrying over into real feelings). . .

And I'm afraid I'm not the whore I thought I was. . . I guess I just like to watch. So on the extreme chance anyone expects ME to be crazee enought to answer your survey, I must play Ernest T. Bass and reply I ain't talkin' I ain't talkin'--the more yer askin' the more I'm balkin'!

(And DK--I'm flattered and frightened that you would pick me! What an honor!)

Background questions

1. Age 40

2. Marital Status Married.

3. Kids? No, but I am one, does that count?

4. Employment? Not at the moment...I was a dotcommunist until last week.

5. Educational background? Checkered, but the University of Maryland did award me a degree eventually. I forget what it said.

5.5 Military background? Army brat. Draft registrant.

6. Intersting employment background? Sold t-shirts and colorful sheets of paper while following the Grateful Dead on tour.

7. Gender? Male, but I sure wish you'd said "Sex?"

8. Social Security Number and
major credit card # (just
kidding

Survivor questions

9. List the contestant(s) from
SurvivorII that you admire the
most? Jeff, Rodger, Alicia, Nick

10. Now the one(s) you
admire the least? Jerri, Mad Dog, Michael, Kimmi, Debb, Mitchell

11. If you were to
make the show, what would
your strategy be? Whatever it had to be. No plan survives initial contact with the enemy.

12. Cite an example where
you have been ruthless? I ate a dingo's baby. In addition, I play Diplomacy, a game of ruthless conniving and backstabbing that is sociologically not unlike Survivor. Furthermore, I allow grass to grow for weeks at a time before mercilessly scalping it to a length of mere inches. Finally: I have personally made fun of Shakes the Clown in public on at least two occasions.

13. What special skill(s) would
you bring to your tribe? Smarta$$, disrespectful one-liners; cattiness; b!tchiness; beef jerky; ability to fart secretly and blame it on Bryant Gumbel.

14. Describe your most embarrasing
moment? Having to tell Shakes that he misspelled "embarassing" in this post. (re: Number 12, amended--make that three times).

16. Favorite Food? Red meat.

17. Poster on the board
you would most like to
have visit you if you
won a "visit from family
member" Reward Challenge (posters already
in game will not be

OMG <click 'em if you've got 'em> I guess I've failed in my bid for anonymity. . . I'm so flattered! (My head's getting so HUGE!) It both creeps me out and makes my day to be referenced at all. . .

And I've never even harassed you, Landru! (By the way--what's with the name? I always picture the guys with the sticks in the old Star Trek. . . and I am not one of the body!)

After perusing all the apps so far, I have to vote: Best talent-->ability to fart secretly and blame it on Bryant Gumbel.
LMAO!

GT, possibly the bestest all-around ass-kisser and shamelessly working toward that Thong Contest gig! (ewwww--do you suppose the two will be embarassingly interconnected?)

Thank you for the props, GT. And sorry to partially creep you out.

Landru is both the original Star Trek thing and an old nickname that got hung on me in adolescence and several places since. The rest I had to add to log on somewhere once, and I just added it when I started here out of habit. It would cost me precious DAW postings to back it out, so I haven't bothered.

I would've blamed the farts on Shakes, but I don't want anyone to think I've got a complex or something...except maybe Shakes.

First a note: heh, Shakes I so told you I wouldn't be able to keep this short like everyone else <It feels like a dating service with all the info I dished>....I really love the challenge of any kind of application for some reason....

CONGRATULATIONS if you get through the whole thing!

Alright, here come’s the 30 second ruuuule....NOW!!!!

Background questions
1. Age

17! C’mon, you know you need some underage action goin’ on! Ahem, but just to deal with certain legal issues, I'll be 18 on record....<remember, this is just between you and me ;>

2. Marital Status

I’m actually happily married, once removed; from life that is. Ya see, I was previously a woman born in the Arktik <wth is that, anyway?> region in the 1500’s and I’m sure I was married although I ~was~ a bard and if you look at the Xena thing you never know, unless they supported that kinda union in which case, good for them. I know this ‘cause Vamp’s Wicca site told me so! Note to the reader: You can stop making faces now.

3. Kids?

No thanks, but could you pass the dip? ^_~

4. Employment?

I'm a full time poster here, I guess....I do have jobs during the summer at banks/brokerages and whatnot, though. <and I haven't once been on the payroll => No taxes hehe....oh wait that's another one of my secrets, durnit!>

5. Educational background?
I’m currently in Gr. 12, going on to OAC. Of course if the friendly neighbourhood Canadians can't apply we'll just say I'm from some non backwater town in the eastern US. <Confidential....shhhh>

5.5 Military background?

Ummm....my school is near an Armoury and I see soldiers and plated vehicles all the time <of course I see just as many drug addicts/pushers, pimps/pimpees and cardboard box condos but I'm getting off topic here ;> That count?

6. Intersting employment background?

Well there's this really funny story....one time, I was working in this brokerage firm and they wanted to ship out boxes of old contracts and accounts to a holding company so I spent the better part of a week looking through all the old stuff and organizing info, cataloguing papers and boxes and....wait....this is about as interesting as an octogenarian librarian from Wisconsin flossing her dentures....oh well nevermind then.

7. Gender?

Male. BTW this is probably the shortest answer you'll see here. Take a moment to breathe and enjoy it.

8. Social Security Number and major credit card # (just kidding)

Well my SIN probably wouldn't help ya much and CC's are a pain in the @$$ <plus I'm still too little for one>

Survivor questions

9. List the contestant(s) from SurvivorII that you admire the most?

Survivor II....ummm well I guess I really liking and admiring are different things <I'm taking that admiring refers to their Survivor skills and not their ability to make everyone love them> soooo:

Alicia - The strongest female competitor in every way, although her physique was a handicap....if her team hadn't screwed up she would have easily been in the finals. Plus I love how she speaks and her body language <I find the first ep with her and Jeff hilarious "She suuure did"> and the nonsensical fight with Kimmi <"I will ~always~ wave my finger in your face!>

10. Now the one(s) you admire the least?

Mitchell - One big EW....He came in a loser and he left a loser. He didn't take it for the team - he hated Keith's guts and still does; He only left out of self pity. I suspect a lot of people might place Jerri here, but at least she tried and pushed herself the distance, in her own self-centered giant ***** way. Amber, Nick, Debb, and Kel deserve special mentions here too, but I can easily come up with reasons why each and every one of them is better than Mitchell <yes, even Debb> BTW, there were far to many useless wastes on SII for my liking, anyway.

11. If you were to make the show, what would your strategy be?

Really, according to my personality type I'd probably be a huge carbon copy of what's-her-name before the merger....then it would depend on what the situation was but I would definetly have a strategy by that point. Erist cast me as Kel in the SB movie, which is somewhat appropriate, except I'm more of a loose Kel not the uptight "I'm a captain in the US army" bastard that he pretty much turned out to be. I can be overcompensating at times as I really hate it when people don't like me for no reason, unless they're Debb, of course and I do have the shyness thing going on....I can be overly sweet and sentimental <Liz> but I wouldn't make teeth fall out every 3 minutes. Cynicism and sarcasm rule my world.

12. Cite an example where you have been ruthless?

Does brattiness count? I was pretty good there....

Let's see....well this one time, I took this kid's ball because I didn't have anything to play with. Then I had to sit in the corner and think about it....so I never did anything wrong ever again. THE END. In the right lighting you can actually see my halo. <Riiiight.>

13. What special skill(s) would you bring to your tribe?

I'm a master eavesdropper, so I guess I'd be in charge of grabbing the dirt on the other team....I'd also use my super psychic powers <I'm a student of Miss Cleo don't-cha-know?> to find lost fish heads and rice tins.

fun facts

14. Describe your most embarrasing moment?

I was out at a friend's house and so I had to catch the GO....soooo we're in the crowded station running after the train and my pants just fall off....'course I was only around 12 so I wasn't feeling horrible there but it was still pretty damn embarrassing with all the business men and women running by.

15. Ever experienced that not so fresh feeling? (just kidding)

Hmmm....probably? <Take a moment to breathe and relax.>

16. Favorite Food?

Well, this is just a coincidence but you know I just happen to love whatever our sponsors are pushing down viewer's throats! *flashes a perfect spokesman smile*

17. Poster on the board you would most like to have visit you if you won a "visit from family member" Reward Challenge (posters already in game will not be eligible, but answer will be updated accordingly if need be)?

Bluuuuu! OMG <click> *tears up for the cameras* Blu is definetly the Lizzie of the board....she pretty much ~never~ has anything negative to say and if she does it still comes out sprinkled with kindness and giggles! *choke* *sob* She’s my hero! OMG OMG OMG <click> <click> <click>

18. Favorite Movie? (may list more than one)

Cruel Intentions
Wild Things
Debby does Dallas
Debby does New York
Debby does Washington
Debby does Topeka
Debby does Anchorage

Wait....is there a pattern here?

Okay add in:

Silence of the Lambs
Scream

and

Please Save My Earth, one of the best anime movies I've seen....although I also like Tobira o Akete <Yep, I'm an anime nut =>

19. Favorite book? (may list more than one)

Sabriel, Lirael, Shade's Children <== I've recently developed a liking for Garth Nix books and fantasy in general <go ICB!>

Green Eggs and Ham ==> 'cause who ~doesn't~ love it?

Romeo and Juliet ==> Just for that, "awww isn't that sweet?" effect.

20. Would you sleep with Shakes the clown for a guaranteed spot in the final 2?

Erm; Duuude, are you sure you'd want to? ^-^;;

21. List five items you would like to bring as a luxury item? (if selected, I will choose one of the items from the list)(No survival items!)

1. Kimmi, my old SB kitty <see below>

2. A picture of my family, just so that in any downtime I could use it in my interviews for instant ratings and likability.

3. A publicity agent.

4. Monopoly! Is it a stress reliever or a stress causer?....This is the only game I've ever seen that Fox could do one of it's "When ____ Attack" specials on. I've never seen nice, quiet people get so bitter so fast.

5. A lawyer....although if I ~didn't~ win, I'd be pretty freaking screwed there.

Kimmi! Get back here!

>>18. Favorite Movie? Eyes of Laura Mars

*** OMG OMG OMG <click click click click clack oh help me she's breaking my counting mechanism click click>!!!!!! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!! You're the only other person in the world who knows what that movie is!!! I actually own a copy of it, LOL!!! Reasons why I love it:
a) First time I EVER saw Tommy Lee Jones (I was the tender age of 13), and fell in love instantly!
b) Love the cheezy disco/fashion/murder mystery theme!
c) Faye Dunaway was WAY cooler here than she was in Mommie Dearest! (hee!)
d) "LET'S ALL CHANT" by the Michael Zager Band! My favorite Disco song in the whole world - I searched everywhere for that song, and only found it a few years ago, on the soundtrack for "The Last Days of Disco"! Prior to that - I had it on eight track back when the film came out!

YOU clearly have fun taste in movies!!!

ItzLisa, thanks! I love mystery and detective movies a lot! Especially when the director, writers, and producer puts you "in" the person. Something Alfred Hitchcock could do masterfully as well. (Another favorite of mine). I agree about FD as well! And TLJ was excellent in the movie I thought! There are others that I could have listed similiar to EoLM, but I guess I also go to the lesser known ones or the forgotten ones as much as the box office hits. Hmmmm, I may have to add you as my "second" choice for "family member" if selected by Shakes!! Now, I wonder if my luxury item could be a movie projector and movies?

Dearest Lisa, Eyes of Laura Mars was a signal movie for "me"
also because of Faye D. I had hopes for her acting career
after "Network"....but alas FD faded FAST. Another newcomer
named Myrel Streep took her place; but I didn't think much
of her acting in the beginning....MS improved beautifully.

About my friend Tommy Lee....know that some of those movies
he shot in Texas, esp. cowboy/westerns, Dalton was probably
sitting around in the shade off to the side sipping iced
tea. (Just saying; not bragging). If ya know the person
who owns the "location" and/or know the person in charge of
"security"....ya get to wander around and make new friends!!!
And 20 years later they are kinda old friends, don't ya know.

what were "B Movies" (ie: lesser known/cult type).

Ah, but the B movie concept is a great study! Many have sprung to the big screen that way. Yes, many "B's" are horrible examples for one reason or another, but who can forget such classics as "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?" And, let's not forget the low budget doesn't always translate into failure at the box office. "Blair Witch Project" anyone?

"Can't get away with that, Dalton!"

Ahhh, you can't get away with this on this board, Dalton -- you know better!

First, I think you're talking about Gloria Grahame.

Roles that I remember: Violet in "It's A Wonderful Life" (that should identify her to 99% of the readers), "The Bold and the Beautiful" (D!ck Powell's wife in a movie directed by Vincente Minnelli; Gloria won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this movie featuring Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner), Debby in "The Big Heat" (director Fritz Lang's best-known sequence has her being permanently disfigured when Lee Marvin throws scalding coffee on her face), the elephant trainer Angel in Cecil B. deMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth" (probably best known today for the lead performance of an uncredited Jimmy Stewart as Buttons the Clown, who disguises his true identity behind his mask -- shakes, ever see this one?), Ado Annie ("I'm just a girl who cain't say no") in "Oklahoma!" ... not a B-movie in the bunch, and I'm sure I can find some more hits with a little time!

One of her best movies, for people who idolize Martin Scorsese, is a movie with Bogart called "In A Lonely Place," directed by Grahame's soon-to-be-ex-husband (and father of the first of her four children) Nicholas Ray. {In a touch that will be familiar to you Debb fans out there, Gloria later married Nicholas' son (her stepson) Tony Ray, who was the father of her last two children.} Dalton is right; she did many excellent movies and deserves to be remembered as one of the outstanding actresses in Hollywood during her prime.

Edited to add: I started to respond because I wanted to talk about "Eyes of Laura Mars" -- the first advance movie screening I ever attended. Jon Peters produced the movie (thanks, Barbra), and I got a pass from Columbia Records. Dalton, I had the exact same reaction you did. After "Network", I thought Faye Dunaway was going to be another Ingrid Bergman, combining an incredible screen presence with an even more incredible beauty. But "EoLM" was actually the beginning of the downturn in her career...

and misspelling her NAME...

(I swear I tried 6 times and it never looked right
cause I suck at spelling).....

only to have TA DA, AyaK know all about her and post it
correctly here for all to enjoy. YEAH, my bad; lazy, that is (hehe).

<<<"ahhh, you can't get away with this on this board, Dalton

First, I think you're talking about Gloria GRAHAME.">>>......
and you are off to the races. And you do it so much better!!!

AyaK...read my other "Worse Ten" thread on OT esp..."I don't work here...."
~~~~~~~~~~
Seriously...MOVIES are a ladies family tradition with me. My
Grandmothers were movie nuts. I said I was taught to sit still and be quiet for two hours by age 3....more by movies than church!! Once, truth, my GrandMa made all of us leave the
theatre during "Elmer Gentry" (Burt Lancaster/Shirley Jones)
because SHE thought God might strike the building w/a thunderbolt. I can't remember how old I was before I ever
saw the END of Elmer Gentry. LOL.
I looked @Faye D.
as a replacement Gloria Grahame...sigh; very disappointed.
And while you explained many of her "great" roles...Dalton
realllly loved Gloria as the tuftalking, scheming bad girl
who trusted no one....she did it better than "Lana", imo.
Comments....the J. Stewart role you mentioned....shhh, that
same Outer Mask/Inner Demons is the first impression my mind
formed of our resident bigshoes (only younger) shhh...
And....OMG...YES! I thought *I* had personally discovered
the next Richard Widmark when Lee Marvin threw the hot coffee
in her face. Oh Wow...I went around telling everybody about
Lee Marvin!!
And to Minstrel....I was narrowly refering to B Movies which
fit the "Film Noir" catagory. Many great actors did or were
contractually forced to do "B Movies". Some of Robert Mitchem's best work was just before he hit it big. And many B Movies were interesting because of the former "A" actors who were reduced
to doing parts in them, etc. etc.
Ooops, we've done gone and turned this thread on tilt.
Sorry Shakes.
***Yeah, but what can I say? She was still cool in it! It was so cheezy, and no one remembers it - that kind of makes it fun in and of itself!
Just my phone number. In case you run into Tommy Lee Jones again...and he should sneeze... well, he might need that napkin to muffle the sneeze...and if it should HAPPEN to have my phone number on it...you know...just in case...
<<GLORIA GARHAM...Glamour "Bad Girl" of FilmNoir>>
I loved Jimmy Stewart - even with that make-up on, you knew it was him because of that voice! Love that man! My all time favorite scene - when Dorothy Lamour is doing her song and dance routine and as the camera pans across the audience, there's Bing Crosby and Bob Hope watching the show! I love in-jokes in movies!
ItzLisa, AH is definitely a favorite of mine! I own the collection of his movies and love to spot his "cameos" in his works. And, has anyone caught his television show on cable from way back?
The genre of The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, etc? Ah yes, "Picture if you will, a once thriving small town now empty except for one man. A man looking for the answers, yet unaware that time has left him. Unaware his very existence has come to be ..... in The Twilight Zone."
Sorry Shakes, the thread got off topic, but perhaps you can appreciate why. So, when is the casting set? When can we expect the first installment?
>And, has anyone caught his television show on cable from way back?
*** YEEEAAH!!! What a great show! That's how I first found out who he was - I was 12, and it was summer vacation, so I was allowed to stay up longer since I didn't have school. I'd watch "The Honeymooners" reruns at 11 PM, and then "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" somewhere around 11:30 PM, and it was the first time I saw this Hitchcock guy! Okay, Minstrel (or anyone) - trivia time! Remember the theme song at the beginning of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"? Who knows the name of that song? No particular prize will be given - just my utmost respect and admiration at not being stumped by this question, because I always stump people with this one! But I have a feeling someone here will probably know it!
"Hitchcock"
Posted by AyatollahKhomeini on 05-15-01 at 11:37 AM
Close enough for government work, HomeBrewer: "Funeral March of a Marionette" by Gounod.
I was always a Hitchcock fan as a kid. The first "serious" movie that caught my attention -- the one that drew me in to the movies -- was "Rear Window." I was very surprised to learn (as an adult) that either Siskel or Ebert also cited this movie as filling the same role in his life!
I also am a huge fan of the wide variety of movies made by David O. Selznick at the Selznick Studios before it folded in 1947. Selznick brought Hitchcock to the U.S. -- the last movie made by the original Selznick Studios before it was broken up for tax reasons was 1940's Best Picture Oscar-winning "Rebecca" (Hitchcock's first US movie), giving Selznick back-to-back Best Picture Oscars. Hitchcock continued under contract to Selznick until a huge stinker of a film called "The Paradine Case" (which Selznick wrote himself). One interesting thing was that the Selznick Studios were originally set up to make 50% Technicolor movies, but ALL of Hitchcock's movies for Selznick were in B&W ("Notorious," "Shadow of a Doubt," "Spellbound," "Foreign Correspondent," "Suspicion," etc.).
Of course, Hitchcock had already made one truly great movie back in the UK: "The 39 Steps." And he made many more great movies after splitting with Selznick (including "Strangers on a Train," "I Confess," "Rear Window," "To Catch a Thief," "Vertigo," "North by Northwest," "The Wrong Man," "The Man Who Knew Too Much" remake, etc.). But the Selznick movies are still special.
Gee, is it obvious that I love Hitchcock too? Oh, and shakes ... I'm not apologizing for hijacking this thread. That's what happens on O/T!
>I was always a Hitchcock fan as a kid.
*** Aya, about ten years ago, I had a little tradition going - each week, I'd rent a different Hitchcock film and then try to spot him in his cameo! Lots of fun!
>"Rebecca" (Hitchcock's first US movie), giving Selznick back-to-back Best Picture Oscars.
***Ooooh!!! I'm about to read the novel of "Rebecca" very soon! It's my next pick after the book version of "Planet of the Apes"! A quick story on why I'm reading that one - I was a Planet of the Apes freak from age eight through 12. I had everything - the dolls, the models, the pjs, t-shirts, game, bubble-gum cards etc. I saw all the movies and watched every episode of the short-lived TV show. Around age 10, at my request, mind you, Mom got me the book - not exactly the greatest thing to reel a 10 year old in, but I DID ask her, after all! Not realizing that it was a CLASSIC piece of science fiction writing, I was just too young to appreciate it. Anyhow, 27 years later, I found a copy in a used bookstore and have decided to give it another shot! I'm sure I'll have a much more enthusiastic response this time! (Of course, big kid that I am, I can't wait to see the Tim Burton remake this summer! Nothing will ever replace the original, but I gotta see it anyhow!) Anyhow, long story short, after "Planet of the Apes", "Rebecca" is next on my summer reading list! What a beautifully written novel!
>And he made many more great movies after splitting with Selznick (including "Strangers on a Train," "I Confess," "Rear Window," "To Catch a Thief," "Vertigo," "North by Northwest," "The Wrong Man," "The Man Who Knew Too Much" remake, etc.)
*** I always loved that his (obvious) favorite leading man was Jimmy Stewart (whom I worship!)! The "Ordinary Every-Man Caught In Dangerous and Extreme Circumstances" always worked, no matter how many times they worked together! And God knows, I certainly DO NOT advocate violence against women (or anyone else for that matter!), but only Hitchcock could get away with having Jimmy Stewart, of all people, roughing up, slapping around, dragging UP a flight of stairs, and basically forcing Kim Novak off a roof to fall to her death in "Vertigo"! He's the last actor you'd expect to do that, and as horrifying of a scene as it was, it's pretty much why it works! It's particularly disturbing because it's him!
"I Got that Scene Beat..."
What's worse than Jimmy Stewart throwing someone off a roof?
Somebody writing an analysis of 'It's a Wonderful Life' based upon Marxist theory. That somebody was me in film school a few years back. Anyone who read the analysis said it was true, depressing, and they were never the same after reading it.
In answer to the inevitable question, 'Is nothing sacred?':
Nope... not really!
"Marxist?"
Bailey Brothers Marxist? Hmm, what an interesting idea. Karl Marx would definitely have approved of George Bailey. But Frank Capra wouldn't have approved of Karl Marx.
In 1974, I lived in Columbus, Ohio. Frank Capra was giving a series of four talks at OSU. I went to three of them, and saw five movies. Four of them I knew: "Lost Horizon", "It Happened One Night", "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and "You Can't Take It With You." The fifth was a movie no one in the audience had ever seen before. Capra told us his movies were like his children, and he loved them all equally, but he loved the unknown one just a little more because no one knew how good it was.
A loudmouthed teenager asked him a question after one of the talks about whether he had any plans to try to make the unknown movie any more popular. He said he did -- he was going to let its copyright (which he owned himself) expire at the end of the year, and he figured that TV stations would start playing it once they didn't have to pay for it.
You've probably guessed who the loudmouthed teenager was (me); you may also have guessed what the movie was: "It's a Wonderful Life."
"A Hitchcock story"
Jimmy Stewart movies with Hitchcock: Rope, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo
***or***
Cary Grant movies with Hitchcock: Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest
I think it's a tossup.
OK, here's the story: Stewart really wanted to do "Vertigo", and Hitchcock wanted Kim Novak as the female lead. To borrow her, Stewart's studio agreed to loan Stewart to Novak's studio for a follow-up pairing in a piece of fluff called "Bell, Book & Candle." But Stewart's contract contained an "out" clause: he could delay making this picture if he made the next Hitchcock film.
While shooting "Vertigo," Hitchcock began working with the star writer Ernest Lehman on the script for "North by Northwest." Stewart loved the script, and Hitch told him that he could have the lead role. As the project developed, though, Hitch found himself thinking of it more like "To Catch a Thief" ... but he didn't tell Stewart.
When "Vertigo" wrapped, Hitch told Stewart that he was having problems funding the film under his (Hitchcock's) production company. Stewart even tried to see if he could arrange funding ... but finally he had to report to "Bell, Book & Candle." The first week that "BB&C" was in production, Hitch made a deal to give the movie to MGM, which was holding Eva Marie Saint to co-star in it! And it just so happened Cary Grant was available, too. So Stewart had to make a movie he didn't want to make, while knowing Cary Grant was making the movie he did want to make...
One interesting thing -- for someone with a reputation for hating actors, a remarkable amount of dialogue in Hitchcock's films is improvised. Stewart, Grant, and Grace Kelly were permitted to improvise at will. An entire scene between Joseph Cotton and Teresa Wright in "Shadow of a Doubt" was dreamed up by the actors, sketched out by Thornton Wilder (who co-wrote the screenplay), and then improvised. Of course, there were some actors that Hitch did have to browbeat (Montgomery Clift comes to mind) -- but Hitch got great performances out of them as a result!
Edit : Dammit!! Sorry, Itz. After reading your post again, it's pretty obvious that you are going to see the new movie. I just got all excited when I started reading your post, and started replying immediatly!
Flashback Central, Itz!! I too had all the POTA paraphenalia as a child!
I am a little younger than some of you (barely), so I can't add a lot on the topic of Hitchcock. I REALLY need to rent some of the classics so I can catch up. I admit, the only two I've seen are Psycho (who hasn't) and The Birds.
Itz, are you going to gos see the new POTA movie? It comes out on July 27th. It's directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc). IMHO he is the one I would want to direct it (alternate: James Cameron). It should be interesting with his "twisted" vision.
Actually, Hollywood is getting to the point of disgust for me. What's up with all these theatrical versions of show I grew up on? It seems they are trying to cash in on remakes of storylines that have existed for 20+ years. The originality seems to have disappeared. If it's not a sequel, then it's a rehashed version of a show I grew up with. POTA is an exception in my mind though, but because I am a big fan. What's up with the latest Josie and the Pussycats and the yet to be released, Scooby Doo (starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, of all people)? I will go see POTA, I have to admit, regardless of the reviews. It seems I've answered my own question though, as to why they are doing it. But, IMHO, POTA is great, and deserves an update.
Sorry I couldn't add to the Hitchcock praise, but thanks, Itz!
Edit: I would go see a remake of HR Pufnstuff, though!!
Dalton, I agree and understood. It is a "throw back" to the big movie studios that signed long term and lifetime contracts with "stars" forcing them to make movies virtually one after another. All you need to do is name anyone of them. And I agree, "B" movies had a two way street, offering stardom and offering continued acting and perhaps career revival.
And is Faye Dunaway making a return anywhere? Many are too stereotyped -- such as child actors. Then you have someone like Tom Hanks who has attempted to play roles that range. I didn't think much of him at first, but have come to agree that he has expanded his abilities and is a fine actor.
To expand this discussion, I ask, "Is television acting harder than movie acting? Harder than stage acting? How would you rank these?
Stage acting is by far the most difficult form of performance. The stress of being 'on' night after night is tremendous. I think television acting is probably second. You have less time for rehearsals and the hours are incredibly long. 'Movie' stars have it the easiest by far. They don't even have to be on the set every day in some cases. Isn't it ironic that the pay scale is the exact opposite of the work performed?
Acting can be very difficult, especially for 'method' actors(which is almost everyone). Drawing on your own experiences to play a role can be very draining. To some gifted people though, it comes as naturally as breathing.
Just my two cents
Kismet
Posted by Minstrel on 05-15-01 at 01:16 PM
Kismet, I agree 100%. I think that is why many actors "return" to the stage. A kind of "roots," even rebirth. And to be in front of a live audience is the best. Feedback immediately.
Damn!! I knew the answer to the AH theme!! Just slow!!! Great to see all the AH fans out there!!
"RE: Acting"
Posted by SherpaDave on 05-16-01 at 01:55 AM
With all due respect, I have to disagree. I found my few experiences working on films to be FAR more difficult than acting on stage. There's just too much sitting around doing nothing to make staying in character practical, much less easy. On stage, on the other hand, everything is in the moment, and it's much easier to maintain the same high level of performance.
But then, my passion was always improv, so my perception may be a little skewed from the norm.
In a nutshell.....All that "Survivor is a game" crapola in S1 and S2 is exactly like what WE KIDS (Relatives/schoolmates)
got sent off to every friggin summer from age 6 through age 17. It was called "SUMMER CAMP"...it was CO-ED...
and it was in far worse locations all over the Western USA. Food was scarse and BAD...
we sure as hell ate all the fish we caught! Bathed in every
stream/river...."bad" water is what horses won't drink, btw.
We also ate rabbits, chickens & on dare's poisonious berries.
Ya learned how to swim cause the big kids threw you off the
staff "instructors" were sadistic/evil/cruel former inmates/
campers who could do almost anything except hurt us or let us
get dead before our experience was complete.
Ya HAD to learn to make
a shelter w/fire, ride horses, cook 5 ways/5 things, live off the land, be one with nature, shot guns & arrows, track, not drown, canoe, ignore rain, not "slay/kill" any animal without prior Adm. permission, rafting, telling stories, dancing,
cleaning self/clothes/tools meant extra food, climb mountains, play games with various balls/bats/nets, bleed and laugh at it.
And lastly....be deliberately left lost alone and given a time period to find your group. Notice I said WE HAD to do all this....to Pass muster by Camp Adm. to our parents.
If we "passed" we went onward to a "better camp"...if we
didn't pass we had to go back to
that same damn camp AGAIN next year!! AAARRRRGGGGHHHH.
However, should your Viking Ship (Sig Pic...I really like better) ever find its way to my vast Lake.....a signed, notorized permission slip from Mrs. Leify and a current
Another Bump
This is the only thread of apps I found in the BlowsVivor forum.
My guess is this was the OT thread.
A lot of the apps, like mine, were posted in Bashers, and some in Spoilers (not sure about Fanatics). It's possible those threads did not get moved from their original forums.
Maybe that's why the links still work.
GT, your link wasn't to an app (since you didn't do one) but to a post DK picked out. Maybe it's here on this thread.
For the other non-applicants, like Ice Cat, she picked their entry to "Confessions and Boasts" on Spoilers, as I recall.
Speaking of housecleaning, if you read this, AK, Sherpa's "Day in the Death of Shakes The Clown" never got moved over from OT, although I bumped it when the new forum opened, hoping it would get noticed.
