Suspicions about a possible breach intensify after Ben is taken from the infirmary, and a reluctant Miles is forced to work with Hurley when he's asked to deliver an important package to a top Dharma official.

Written by Melinda Hsu Taylor & Greggory Nations
Directed by Jack Bender

Guest List
Francois Chau as Dr. Pierre Chang
Marsha Thomason as Naomi Dorrit
Doug Hutchinson as Horace Goodspeed
Patrick Fischler as Phil
Jon Gries as Roger Linus
Eric Lange as Radzinsky
Leslie Ishii as Lara
Brad William Henke as Bram
Dean Norris as Howard Gray
Tim DeZam as Trevor
Lance Ho as young Miles
Linda Rose Herman as Evelyn

We know the important package is the body bag shown in the previews. The top Dharma Dude is Dr. Chang. Can't wait to learn about Miles and his talking-to-the-dead skills.

Hoth is ice planet from Star Wars - I hope we see polar bears! I'm thrilled with a Miles centric episode. Now who's in the body bag? We haven't seen Farraday in awhile. Isn't Hoth also from Egyptian mythology?

It's Thoth, and didn't someone already say that that's what the title meant.

I think it was in the episode names/spoiler thread.

Is that rumor or fact? I haven't seen any info that confirms either way.

ETA - I just listened to a podcast with the producers and they said this episode has a little comedy to it - light-hearted before the countdown to the finale (it's Hurley and Miles, after all). So I'm going to stick with my guess that Hoth is the opposite of Hot (Some Like It Hot was a comedy). Hoth representing the "cold dead people" that Miles can converse with.

Wow, Ken Leung was terrific in this episode. I also enjoyed Hurley and Kate's parts.

It seems like Ilanna and company are affiliated with Dharma as well, it will be interesting to watch.

Oh, and I loved Naomi. Good to see her again!

Just a question, it seems as if myles, charlotte and daniel all had previous ties to the island, what do you think was naomi's previous ties if there was?

"RE: Episode 5:13 - Some Like It Hoth"
Posted by DoodleBug on 04-16-09 at 11:36 AM
I don't think she has ties to the island. Abaddon recruited her because of her military training.

Hurley rocked this episode - serious moments and the perfect amount of humor. Writing Empire...with some improvements...would be totally the kind of think that Hurley would do.

1. Miles and Chang=obvious.

2. Tooth filling blowing a hole in the head=ouch!

3. I believe that the Dharma Initiative was behind Miles' kidnapping. DI will be a big part of Season 6. Mark my word.

4. Poor Phil. I could see that coming a mile away.

A lot of obvious things last night. But I did love the ending with Daniel and Miles. "Hi Miles, it's been a while".

Yes! So that's where Daniel has been - Michigan!! Even though I knew the next episode would feature Daniel, it was SO good to see him like that.

A fun episode. Mostly predictable, but still interesting.

So Charlotte dies before the final flash. Many of us presumed it was because little Charlotte and current Charlotte couldn't exist in the same time. However, we saw tonight this CAN happen, so we are still left with the nose-bleed death mystery, or am I missing something?

I must have missed that, I never thought that was why Charlotte died. Wasn't it because she had been on the island the most length of time? Her reaction to the flashing was worse because of that.

"RE: Question-Charlotte"
Posted by weltek on 04-16-09 at 10:36 AM
Hadn't Daniel been there just as long?

No Charlotte was there as a little girl, then Miles got the nosebleeds as he was there as an infant(we don't know how long), then Juliet got them because she was on the island 3 years previously, then Sawyer got his.

Do we actually know when Daniel was FIRST on the island? I admittedly don't follow spoilers and tracking characters/info much, so I rely soley on my memory. I can't recall if we have confirmation that Daniel was/was not born on the island. I assumed we didn't know that for sure yet.

No we don't know about Daniel. He seemed to imply that it was his first time there though. Would explain why he never got a nosebleed.

"RE: Question-Charlotte"

Or that he had his constant (Charlotte) I suppose could explain that.

No I don't think they ever said there could NOT be two of anyone. In fact they proved that before that episode when Sawyer witnessed the birth of Aaron and Locke saw the hatch light come on. In that time flash there were two Sawyers, Juliets and Lockes.

I always assumed that Charlotte never flashed because she was dead. We saw the remains of Montand's arm too when Jin flashed.

Charlotte died because of the time flashing and the amount of time she had been on the island.

I must've ducked out of that conversation before it finished then, and frankly I'd not thought about Charlotte again lately. I hated her character, so was just happy she died!

I have a hard time buying that she died only because of the length of time on the island & flashing. Seems like others had been there almost as long (Daniel, Miles, Charlotte-depending on age) and they got little more than a trickle of a nose bleed. But maybe it's just the time travel impacts people differently. Or maybe she was more exposed to the radiation on the island than others? I recall Daniel talking to Desmond about the radiation being a cause.

Total Time Spent on Island when Flashes Began:
Charlotte: 1971-1977
Miles: 1977-19??
Juliet: 2001-2004
Sawyer: 2004 (around 100 days)
Daniel: 2004 (around 10 days)

Assuming Miles left as a young child, Charlotte would have had a much longer exposure to the island than all of the others present during the flashes.

Remember, Daniel/Juliet/Sawyer's presence in the Dharma period hadn't happened yet when they were flashing through time.

Even though we know Daniel's mother was on the island, it is unknown whether or not he was born there like Charlotte and Miles.

Loved this episode. Great acting and use of many characters.

1. I am guessing we are getting closer to the filming of the Comic-Con Dharma film where Daniel and Sawyer are trying to get Chang to film the warning and asking for help. My guess is that is the video that started to put everything into motion.

2. I still think Ben/Widemore/Losties are technically all on the same side. They had the whole Dharma recruiting game. It's Dharma that is eviiiil...and they are back!

3. I also think we will get to see the season opener"flashback" real soon!

4.Loved the use of the white rabbit, the clock at 3:16, the swingset yet again!

5. Loved baby Miles. Dhamar onesies!

Edited to add one more thing: I love the way Jack is acting. He physically looks different. Humbled. Great acting job by Matthew Fox!

Did you recognize "Bram" the guy who kidnapped Miles as the same guy who is helping Iliana move the big box on the beach? So the "What lies in the Shadow" gang.... we now know they are not Widmore since they didn't want Miles to join Widmore. If they are not with Ben and not with Widmore...who are they with. Dharma?

Yeah he is , isn't he.....are these people then the Dharma left overs trying to seek revenge on the hostiles/others....Widmore did warn locke that there is a war coming and that he (locke, I think had to be there).....but when will this war take place 2007 or 1977 ( past or present)since it seems that parties are in different time zone..literally...

I'm betting on Dharma. We know it is still active and assumes people on the island because of the Swan lockdown and food drop. When the Swan blew up, did Dharma know and start to scramble a salvage team? There is a 3 year gap from era of explosion and Kahana expedition to Bram & Ilana's placement on the flight. Why so long?

I'm still convinced that the item in the shadow is the wheel.

Love Hurley and wish he had successfully delivered a slightly altered "Empire" script to Lucas.

I'm confused, what is the Video that everyone keeps talking about. I have seen every single episode, since I got LOST Season 1 on DVD and was able to catch up.

Is it where Marvin Candle addressed the button be pushed..

It was released over the summer at Comic-con. In the background you can hear Daniel and possibly Sawyer/LaFleur.

I didn't mind this episode. I am not a Miles fan (I always wondered why he was tagging along) but this episode brought him up for me.

1. I am interested to see what happens with Dr. Chang. Supposedly he kicks out Miles and Mom when Miles is still a baby. Mom then says Dad is dead... how would she know that? How long has he been dead? Why? Or is she full of it? Dr. Chang seems like a loving father and so maybe he sends them away to protect them.

2. I liked the whole Hurley and Miles exchange. It's obvious that Miles is trying hard not to like Hurley but is not succeeding.

3. I liked Hurley's whole probing of Dr. Chang in the van... your wife, your kids, your name is Miles too.

4. I laughed when Hurley suggested to Miles that maybe he could hold himself or change his own diaper!!

5. So Ilana and crew are not working for Widmore but I don't know that they're Dharma either. They don't speak like scientists. The whole what lies in the path of the statue thing is too riddlely and the talk of being special is not very scientific. I still think they could be the descendents of/original natives (the ones who built the statue) of the island. Ilana claimed to not know Ben and so I think they may not be part of the Others either and were perhaps chased away by Alpert and Co.

6. Kate needs to keep her mouth shut.

7. Is Miles going to come to know his father and realize that he's not such a bad guy afterall and try to warn him?

8. So Daniel, where have you been for the past 3 years? (totally missed the whole Michigan comment! )

9. What's up with the dead dude? He looked liked Dharma. Was he killed by his own people? If he was killed by a hostile there would have been a big to-do about it. The guy is digging a hole, thinking of a girl and gets a bullet in the head. Was he digging where he wasn't supposed to be? This is more evidence that Dharma is indeed very evil.

So Daniel, where have you been for the past 3 years?

He's been in Ann Arbor working with the Dharma think-tank trying to figure out how to manipulate time. He may have...in his spare time...also been out building "The Lampost".

I was under the impression that his filling from his tooth being ripped out by an electro-magnetic force was, in fact, his cause of death. They were building the hatch where Desmond eventually ended to push the button, so I think it's possible.

Miles "talked" to him and the dead dude said his tooth was hurting like a filling was being pulled out.... his filling came out through his brain (his cavity killed him!)

Remember when Jack was walking through the hatch and the metal key lifted off of his chest? They had to push the button to control the electronmagnetic forces in that area. When they didn't push the button, the forces pulled everything metal onto itself...

When Desmond was late pushing the button, that's when flight 815 crashed.

This season has just blown my mind. The writing has gotten so much better now that they have the full series in sight.

What I can't figure out is this (and maybe I don't need to figure out but it's bothering me). What year is it OFF island? I guess maybe we'll find out the answer next episode when we talk to Daniel. Is it 1977? Because it is clearly not 1977 on Hydra.

"RE: Episode 5:13 - Some Like It Hoth"
Posted by shimane22 on 04-18-09 at 07:44 PM
Right now, the show is just straddling two different points in time. The off-island that Daniel just returned from was 30 years before the Ajira flight which brought the Oceanic 6 (minus Aaron) back to the island.

Hydra Island exists in 1977-- Dr. Chang referenced it in the past episode when he threatened to send Hurley there to pick up polar bear droppings.

Sun, Ben, Lapidus, Ilana, etc. are on Hydra Island in 2007.

Hope that makes sense.

"RE: Episode 5:13 - Some Like It Hoth"
Posted by DoodleBug on 04-20-09 at 03:13 PM
If Ben or Sun were to leave Hydra, they would hit the mainland in 2007. (I'm glad Chang referenced Hydra this past episode)

But if Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Hurley, etc were to leave the island on the sub, they would hit the mainland in 1977. So Daniel was in Michigan in 1977 - and there is also a younger Daniel somewhere also (just like older and baby Miles on the island). Wild.

I guess I was always thinking that just the island skipped time since it disappeared when the wheel was turned, but that wouldn't make sense really. Time traveling is confusing.
