I thought everyone in the US was taught the Library of Congress indexing system. We even use it in our colleges here in Canada.

None of those Air Force folks will ever be allowed in the LoC again. Did you see them flopping open that ancient little red book with no concern for the binding?

I will have to review my tape, but I understand what you mean. Some people don't realize the value and the need for care for old books.

They needed a book cradle or another form of support instead of just slapping it down --- which is even more frustrating because they didn't need to actually examine that book anyway.

It seems to me that during the whole series all teams have knocked around historical items in historical places with very little regard for their value. I can't believe that the producers or the institutions would not have taken more precautions to protect them in the first place.

I have a Masters in Library Science and, although I'm not a librarian, seeing them in the revered Library of Congress gave me fits.

Agreed, some of the books they handled maybe the only copies existing. Clearly the producers needed to talk to the players about how to handle items.

I partly blame it on the fact this is the final leg, everyone is trying to beat the other teams. A location like this should be a middle leg with warning given. The printing press was ok, it is made of cast iron, but the hunt in the Library was just wrong for a final leg.

What are the chances that they were replicas??? Wouldn't you think they would have thought ahead of possible destruction, so replicas were created. I imagine experts were in the back of the scenes for scrutinizing. The L of C wouldn't not been left open without some security and some respected personnel in the background.

Replicas or last year's edition of the indexes. Yes, I could see that. While there must be security, I can also see the producers making the dumb mistake to agree to be bonded to pay for all repairs to anything damaged without realizing how expensive it can be to repair a rare, two hundred year book!

But I like your idea of replicas, entire shelves where they expect the hunters to look would be replace with some cheap books with fake covers - not too expensive and far safer than leaving the real stuff there.

Southies are way behind, but AirForce got lost!

How did the slow geniuses get into first?

"RE: Final Show"
Posted by HistoryDetective on 08-14-06 at 09:32 PM
No! Don't go through the tunnel! You're gonna be on the north side of Baltimore and nowhere near the fort.

That was cool how all the artifacts made the map.

I can't believe the Geniuses made it to the harbour first.

I'm confused...according to the NBC website the finale is next week on Monday, August 21...but then I looked at the tvguide site and it shows a replay of episode 1 and 2 next week...So anyone who is in east and knows what is going on, please speak up?

One AirForce member walked right past the map on the ship. Ha Ha.

And it looks like they're headed away from the Lazaretto Battery, too.

Editted to ask: did you get my PM?

The Southies find the Truce ship almost by accident.

And the Geniuses are the first to the secret chamber. They're looking for the clue to open the cryptex.

5 letters...

All three of them just annoy the hell out of me. Go away, Lambchop! Go away, Stupid Fat Hobbit! Go away, Pinchy Face!

"RE: Final Show"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 08-14-06 at 09:56 PM
Wild guess... they're in a crypt of sorts, and "the answer is right in front of you." So I'll go with crypt as the five letter word until we see more after the commercial.

I thought the same, Pepe. Then I figured it couldn't be, because I'd thought of it.

HD: they annoy me too. Go Air Force!

I had read this was the finale tonight. So I was getting really depressed when the Geniuses were in the lead with minutes left in the game. I kept hoping Charles would fall out of the boat. I think I could handle the other 2 winning. But I can't stand Charles.

So I was very happy to see the "to be continued". And usually I hate seeing that phrase. But if it means that it gives the Air Force or Southie Boys a chance to win. Then I am all for it.

To Be Continued!

So what was the deal with the audience clue going to commercial about seeking a reef?? Does that mean the 5 letter word is coral? That wouldn't seem to be "right in front of them." I think it is Scott as in Francis "Scott" Key but "crypt" was a good guess too. Since this episode has had a lot to do with the flag, I also thought it might be "stars." One thing is for sure, if I were in this finale and the leader of my team, I would assign two team members to be looking for the "chamber" entrance while the 3rd member simply followed behind them and concentrated his/her mental efforts instead on trying various words. As we saw with the Paris painting, there is no penalty for attempting and solving the clue ahead of time. Furthermore, the Southies started just wildly guessing last week with their cryptex as opposed to finding the boat with the 7 letter name. It seems like a better use of time to me. They don't need to all 3 look for the chamber entrance.

On a different note, this show has bad editing. You really can't tell at all what's going on and how long teams have been doing something and how much of a lead they have. Some would say that's a positive because it's suspenseful. However, I think too much misleading/misdirection or too little real information is a turnoff to the viewers. Case in point...it looked like next week we are going to see a "bunch point" in the chamber but it was difficult to tell. My hope is that fairness prevails and the Air Force team wins. I will be left with a really bad taste in my mouth and probably avoid getting caught up in future seasons (if they have any) if another team wins. In my opinion, while I know that the "winner" is the one that comes in first in the final leg, it just seems wrong if that's the only leg you manage to win through the whole season. It almost seems like the favorite stumbled rather than the underdog prevailed.

Didn't they show one of those Genworth clues "I seek thy reef" melt into "The key is free". The second quote is simply an anagram of the first.

They also mention "the key is right in front of you", but that could just be referring to finding the key on the warehouse in the harbor.

This has peaked my interest, trying to figure out this 5-letter solution. I'd say it is an anagram of a logical word like "brave" (land of the free...home of the brave), "stars" (flag related, missing star on McHenry flag)or "scott" (as in Francis Scott Key). Of course, I'd love it if it was something simple like "money".

They made it an anagram because you want it to be a relevant word but it would have been a disaster if one of the teams had guessed it while playing with the cryptex before the teams reached the final destination. Of course, I'd love it if it was something simple like "money".

Other guesses??

Sir Frances Scott "Keyes". 5 letter word

"RE: Final Show"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 08-15-06 at 10:09 AM
Except it's "Key" not Keyes and the first name is Francis.

I don't think anyone would ever guess the idea of adding an 'es' to Key's last name, they'd be there all night trying to crack the code.

The answer couldn't be "Stars" could it? Is that way too obvious? I haven't heard them say what their guesses are.

I'm too snarky for this ganme...

If it were my game, the five letter word would be RIGHT.

The answer is RIGHT in front of you.

But I doubt the creators of this show are that mean.

Hey, you could be right!

ETA: The reason I think it could be "stars" is that they all have to use the star tokens to get into the chamber, plus the star theme runs throughout the clues.

I was thinking of the word "right", as in 'the answer is "right" ..... in front of you'.

ETA : oops, sorry Bebo - did not see your post before I did mine. Guess we were thinking along the same lines.

Incidentally, what was the point of that repeated camera shot of that blue circular object in the middle of the large glyph?

"RE: Final Show"

my guess is "glory", as in "Old Glory", another name for the flag.

And I'm still the only one rooting for the geniuses to come out on top. Air Force is just boring boring boring.

I didn't learn about the LoC system until I started working at the college library, so I'd imagine it could be difficult for some of them.

But I thought all the remaining teams have college or university training? Does the US miltary use a diffirent system for thier libraries? Real question, I never thought of this question before, but on the otherhand Air Force did not seem to have problems using the card catalog.

PS. I just talked to my girl-friend. While she has used the English D.D.S and the L.o.C. system here in Canada, she claims she can't find book using the card catalog. She has always used the computerized system to find books and has no idea how to use the card. Was that a shock to me!

"RE: Final Show"

I don't know how to use a card catalog, either. The LoC system is pretty easy to understand, but I'm far too young to know how to use those card thingies. I'm sure I could figure it out, though.

I work at a library, so I could probably get to the US History section without using one of those archaic card catalogs.

When I was at the Air Force Academy in the early 80s, they used the LoC filing system on cards. Although I imagine they have long gone to a computerized catalog, I have little doubt they are still using the LoC system. I guess young whippersnappers just have problems with an actual, physical card catalog is all!

I'm just surprised the Geniuses didnt go straight to the card catalog! I really hope either of the other teams just goes straight by. Preferably both...
