"The Office is the best show on TV"

LAST EDITED ON 10-01-06 AT 01:06 AM (EST)

I had seen "The Office" on a handfull of occasions prior to breaking down and buying the Season Two DVD a few weeks ago. As much as I had enjoyed it in small doses, the show really shines in marathon viewing sessions. I took in every episode in less than 4 days, and this is with a full work schedule. Anyone who thinks the sitcom is a dead genre hasn't seen this show. Reasons why I love this show:

Steve Carell-Everything this guy touches turns to comedic gold. His spots on "The Daily Show" were among the shows best. "The 40-Year Old Virgin" was brilliant. But nothing tops his performance as the egotistical, clueless, and unhip Michael Scott. When Michael visits NYC for a business meeting and proclaims that SBarro's is his favorite local pizza eatery, I nearly doubled over in laughter.

Best Foursome since "Seinfeld"-Remember when "Seinfeld" was in it's prime and there was absolutely no letdown when the story switched from Jerry to George to Kramer to Elaine? The same can be said with Michael, Dwight, Pam and Jim. Each one brings something completely unique and funny to the table. There's no letup in laughs when the story veers from one character to another.

Secondary Characters-"The Office" takes a cue from "The Simpsons" and delivers on sidestories for the supporting cast. Angela's affair with Dwight, Ryan's not so great office "romance", and Toby's schooling Michael on the proper way to handle workplace complaints have all yielded huge laughs.

Jim and Pam-That Sam and Diane romance was kid's play next to Jim and Pam's trials. This is the only show that can double you over with laughter and then hit you over the head with a welcome stab of romantic drama. Jim's confession to Pam in season two's cliff hanger was sad and profound, just the way an unwanted confession should be. John Krasinski is a true find.

I actually look forward to this show more than I do "The Simpsons". And that's saying a lot.

The Office is indeed comedic gold. Let's hope the writers and actors can continue to find ways to keep it fresh and funny.

I agree for the most part. Such an awesome job in writing AND casting. You can tell great care was taken in casting each part.

Have you read the blogs on The Office website? Hilarious.

I hope the writing can stand the test of time.

Very little on tv makes me laugh out loud anymore. This show just tickles my funny bone. Every cast member makes an important contribution but the key players are outstanding.

"Future Dwight"

The opening bit with the faxes from "Future Dwight" . . . hilarious. Every episode I am laughing out loud at some point. This is the best sitcom on television right now & thank heavens NBC kept it on the air when the ratings were low in the beginning & gave viewers a chance to discover it. I've been watching since the beginning & it's pure comic genius, from the writing to the timing & delivery of all the actors.

Future Dwight was hilarious. Only he would believe something like that. And yes, it will be interesting when he finds out Jim will be Michael's right hand and not him.

"you need to see the BBC version"
Posted by shakes the clown on 11-10-06 at 11:48 AM

You are right, this show is amazing. But you really need to see the BBC version since its even better...and has a much better cast as hard as that is to believe.

The first season of the Office was basically just a copy of the BBC version rigth down to using the same lines. And the BBC version was much much better. But in the second season the American verion really took off and started to find its own legs to stand on (might have something to do with the fact that the BBC version only ran for 12 episodes so there was nothign left to copy after season 1)

>I actually look forward to this
>show more than I do
>"The Simpsons". And that's saying
>a lot.

Not really. The Simpsons has been garbage for a couple years now. I actually have stopped watching it which is something I thought would never happen in my life.

But you really need to see the BBC version since its even better...

I was wondering how this version compared to the original, which I thought was fantastic, so I appreciate your input on this as I have not yet seen the American version. Shame the original only lasted two seasons (special edition notwithstanding), as it was comedy at its absolute best.

For those who have not yet seen the British version, I would urge you to view it - and in turn, I will make an effort to view the US version which I understand is excellent.

Just one word of advice Bullseye....the first half of the first season (american version) is basically a word for word copy of the BBC version which really annoyed me. And since you are a fan of the BBC version it will probably annoy you as well.

But stick with it because once they run out of material to steal the show actually gets really really funny, right up there with the BBC version on some levels.

Casting-wise, the BBC version has a much better cast with the exception of a few roles (Jim and the temp). But that said, the American cast is still great...just not as great as the BBC version. Steven Carrol does a great job, but he pales in comparison to Ricky Gervaise (who btw is a producer of the American version). Dwight, who plays Carrols right hand man is great, but as great as he is he isn't half as good as what's his name, the really skinny guy with blond hair on the BBC version.

The support characters on the american version might be better than the bbc version though.

I appreciate the heads up, but it sounds like it will be well worth checking it out.

Ricky Gervaise (who btw is a producer of the American version).

I did not know that - that alone may be the reason I need to check the American version out - Ricky Gervaise is genius!

Thanks.

O.K. - I have now seen three episodes of the American version and can now proclaim it the best television show on the dial. Had it not been for this thread, I doubt I would have even bothered to check it out, so I am glad I took everyone's advice and watched this gem. So - a thanks to all.

I love The Office cast except for one character.

Karen ("the other woman"), played by Rashida Jones, is boring.

She is the weakest cast member.

Besides, Jim and Pam belong together.

yeah karen is kinda lamo but i think that's what they're doing on purpose. it was funny when she sang everything she does is magic on stage though.

"Will Success Spoil "The Office?""

I hope success will not spoil "The Office."

I can't say that I was impressed by the last two episodes: Jan & Michael's dinner party, and "boys night out" (w/Ryan).

Didn't get many laughs from either episode.

I realize that some shows "jump the shark", but I'd hate to see "Office" go this way.

Hmmm...actually I liked these two a whole lot. Some of the best that I have seen.

They are darker and more uncomfortable yet still histerical.
Still classic Office stuff. My only complaint would be to spend more time in the actual office.

they have their characters so down....love when he "accidently" got jan on the cell phone while showing off her pic.

loved how they all came out and got locked in...
i can't wait for tonights episode.....so far has NOT jumped the shark for me.

It's starring Kevin, and it's only 2 minutes long. I didn't think it was all that funny - just kind of pathetic.

I can't wait for the new season to begin.

This week's episode was hysterical. Mr. B wasn't home when it first aired, but I gladly watched it again with him when he got home.

Well, don't act so surprised.

I loved it as well. OMH. Especially Phyllis blurting out Angela's secret. I kept waiting for Dwight to say something abou them being married.

My sound got all screwed up, and I had to watch it on the computer.

DS and I just watched the Yankee Swap episode which aired on TBS this month. He suggested his class do it for their party today.

Tis the season.

I keep trying to watch The Office regularly. But I don't.

Everytime I do get to, I love it. The post-SuperBowl episode was great.

Maybe it's because I hate the idea of 30-Rock. Or GE. Doesn't help that I'm trying to get a job with them.

Anyone geared up for the next season? Starts September 17th! If you are looking for a good laugh, it would be worth it to rent the last disk of each season to watch the bloopers - I think I laugh more at the bloopers than at the actual show!

The deleted scenes are worth the watch, too. My only complaint is that they should not be deleted scenes and the show should just be an hour long! Most of these can be found online... my favorite: Stress Relief Clip 2. If you enjoy Dwight it is well worth the almost 4 minute watch enjoy!

What a great way to start the season (aside from being too short!). The parkour opening sequence was wonderful. Andy disappearing into the refrigerator box was priceless! Anyone else watch it?
