"SYTYCD-10 Top Twenty, redux"

Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 07:42 PM
So if they do it like last season everyone will dance then they'll eliminate from last weeks low vote total. So I suspect we will see all 20 dance tonight then see 2 eliminated at the end of the show.

Keep it all here until the West Coast figures out who lost the choreographer roulette.

Mesmarized by Cat's earings. Top 20 intro dance.

Tyce the oreo routine.

Oh, Cat what the heck are you wearing.

Nigel Lythgoe. Mary Murphy and Christina Applegate.

Dancing us in. In their couples I think this time. Not alphabetical.

My first comment was 'what is Cat wearing? That's awful'

Tyce's group number was really good. Funky, kooky, etheral and fun.

I guess I'm in the minority, I kept longing for Wade Robeson's version of that.

It was a bit too Wade-lite for me.

You aren't the only one. I was trying to figure out who the choreographer was and thought "There's a certain Wade Robeson feel there but not enough of it, so it can't be him." It would be awesome if he came back to do some choreo.

"Reveal the bottom six dancers"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 08:10 PM

called to the front line, the back line is safe.

Save two of them right away. One guy and one girl.

Mariah and Carlos step forward. Jade step forward, Brittany step forward.

These four will dance for your life.

Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 08:13 PM
Will cut after the solos, and they will perform after being cut.

Hard in da Paint
Waka Flocka Flame

That was odd.

Imagine Dragons.

Lots of gymnastics.

More solos after the break.

De Novo Adagio
Alicia Keys

That is nice.

"RE: Solos"

Mariah: Had she done that at auditions she wouldn't have made it to Vegas.

Carlos: He did alright. Clunky and perhaps unrehearsed but there were glimpses of greatness.

Brittany: Well done. Definitely better than Mariah.

Jade: A for creativity. But it somehow still didn't catch my fancy.

After all these seasons I'm still surprised when dancers don't spend the time creating kick-arse choreography for their solos.

Judges decision:
Carlos and Brittany.
Overall, they were definitely 2 of the weakest. Maybe not the weakest 2, but we can do without them.

I'd rather have had Mariah gone rather than Brittany! And for that matter, Jade rather than Carlos. But I'm less upset that Carlos is gone than that Brittany is gone, because Brittany was my favorite!

Nigel is disappointed in the solos. Didn't feel it from any of you. Basing it on everything so far.

Carlos step forward. Brittany step forward.

Not easy, none of you in my bottom four. Carlos and Brittany you will be leaving the show this week.

Jade and Mariah are safe.

"RE: Leaving Tonight"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 10:02 PM
I agree that the solos were weak. The only one I liked was Carlos. Especially Jade was disappointing, since he is really only a solo dancer. Ditto for Mariah.

IMO, Jade and Mariah should have gone based on solos.

"Hayley and Curtis"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 08:33 PM
Ray Leeper Jazz Routine.

He is a bad boy, and she is giving him what for.

And she is dressed in more pleather than should be allowed.

Mama Knows Best
Jessie J

Death spot and not a good routine, IMO. Insta-prediction, they will be in danger next week.

Nigel-what an opening, does your Daddy know what you are up to. She scared the hell out of Curtis. Very sexy routine, danced brilliantly, I couldn't take my eyes off Hayley. Got us off to a sexy start.

Mary-You need to get your happy dancing going, I loved it. Curtis you are a little giggle bucket. No way be down and dirty and you were. Hayley the fourth came a couple days early with the fireworks going off on that stage. You are explosive, the technical merit is unbelievable.

Christina-I forgot you were a tapper. Hayley you are insanely sexy and dangerous, we should leave you by yourself for a couple of minutes. Sometimes you didn't ooze into the words so much. You had to move into the words, more fluid and more hard. Anticipation is what we want to feel. Just more of that.

Hot routine, and I really enjoyed that routine.

Hayley & Curtis|Jazz: This feels uncomfortably like watching pre-teen pagaents, were the toddlers act parts older than they appear. Ick. I may have to switch back to Big Brother to scrub my eyes out.

"Jasmine H and Aaron"

Lyrical Hip Hop by Nappy Tabs.

Tears Always Win
Alicia Keys

Mary - Thanks you for the chemistry lesson, it was smokin' I thought we were PG or G. Oh my gosh, Jasmine star in this number, actress, great dancer, you made me feel every bit of frustration. Aaron, you were sexy up there dude. It was hot. Step Push Ripple.

Christina. Note from dress, crumples up. I could not take my eyes off of you the opening next week (to Jasmine) the couple to beat. Doesn't even matter, what you do, sexy together.

Nigel - something very honest, I believed it. Aaron you are so strong. I forgot you are a tap dancer, you are a major asset after just scrapping in. Jasmine I believed your character. It is about the performance.

"RE: Jasmine H and Aaron"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 09:54 PM
11th guy? Aaron is way better than that and should go far.

I quite liked that routine.

Jas H & Aaron|Lyrical Hip Hop: F'ing amazing. Now THAT was sexy. Sooo vastly different than the previous routine.

"Malece and Jade"

Bollywood by Nakul

Pimping national dance day.

She is playing hard to get.

Student of the Year

What was in front of the camera. That was not good. Not good at all.

Christina. This was so far out of your wheelhouses. Jade, sad to see you in the bottom, when we are afraid of something, have to work harder. Goes on and on have ot work harder. Love Malece.

Nigel, such a pixie look, that means you have to get it right. Eyes are drawn to you. Jade. If you ever have to dance for your life, dance in your major style. I am shocked that you picked up this choreography as well as you did. Every hand gesture, rude to someone in Bombay. I want to know, what will your friends say when they see you in Adam Shankman's outfit.

Mary - You were a prince tonight. Really hitting it. Having a darn good time. Malece you look like a star, veil has to be heavy.

"RE: Malece and Jade"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 09:55 PM
yikes, that wasn't good. I like Malece, but she was too cute/blond for bollywood, and Jade was quite weak.

"RE: Malece and Jade"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-02-13 at 11:54 PM
Malece and Jade|Bollywood: Hmmmm...considering that Bollywood is so foreign to all dancers I will give them a small break, technically. It was, however, NOT the best Bollywood routine I've seen on this series before. Shows that both of them have some work to do.

"Alexis and Nico"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:00 PM
Stacey Tookie, contemporary routine.

Sequel to the the going to war (Katharine), this is the coming home.

Old Skin
Olafur Arnalds

Nigel - Loved the music. Nico, you get better every week. Alexis had the toughest job. Tappers don't straighten your legs, you did very well, work harder at that. Like watching you.

Mary - You guys let the music take you someplace uninhibited. Nico you were fabulous. Alexis it was so real, so honest.

Christina - I think you are just such a beautiful dancer. Did you change that beginning from dress, yes. Alexis you have a grace about you.

"RE: Alexis and Nico"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 09:58 PM
this didn't strike me as a sequel as much as intended, except that as usual the sequel didn't live up to the original.

"RE: Alexis and Nico"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-03-13 at 00:03 AM
Alexis and Nico|Contemporary: Too big of a set-up. That's what I blame it on. It was good but I found that Nico's partnership was a little lacking. None of his lifts looked easy and effortless. And Alexis seemed detached from all of it. Not high on the chemistry level. It was beautiful, put to such a beautiful song, but it also lacked the emotional impact I was expecting from a 'soldier coming home' story.

"Brittany and BluPrint"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:11 PM
She's out, but supporting BluPrint in a Broadway number.

Spencer Liff, Late night cram session at the library.

Its Oh So Quiet
Ice Princess Soundtrack

Standing O for that from audience.

Mary - Fun number, the first cut is always difficult we adore you, you got to share with all of us. BluPrint did a fine job, the lines are not quite there. Got to stretch them out. You should have hit it when the music swelled, gotta dig deeper.

Christina. Sad to see you go. BluPrint I think you are wonderful, you are a dance. If you are to ever get Broadway again, this is the one where you can be as goofy and have as much abandon, and Nigel can't say you are pulling face. As long as it is warranted in truth. This is the one time when you can really celebrate. Let all that stuff go.

Nigel - Sell, sell, sell, have to believe in what you are selling. You need sincerity and if you can fake that, you have it made. Just sell yourself and the story. Brittany it is a shame you never got to show your real style, sorry you are leaving us today.

"RE: Brittany and BluPrint"

Cute and fun routine.

"RE: Brittany and BluPrint"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-03-13 at 00:10 AM
Brittany & BluPrint|Broadway: Hmmm... I am beginning to wonder if my expectations for these dancers was somehow unfairly raised to high. Sloppy. Bad timing. They looked like they were concentrating and still didn't get it right. Forgot that Brittany was kicked off already. I can see why, again, now. BluPrint may be close behind.

"RE: Brittany and BluPrint"
Posted by Sagebrush Dan on 07-03-13 at 02:17 AM
Have not been a fan of BluPrint since back in the days of the auditions. Never thought he should have made top 20. This confirmed it.

"Jasmine M and Alan"

Tango by Miriam and Leonardo.

He is going to take her innocence away. He is good at the creepy.

Intense lifts.

Escape from Salvery
PP Musik (UK)

Cat says like Dracula.

Judges standing.

Christina - Last week's number, I worried you wouldn't have a moment again and you did.

Nigel - Particularly the lift at the end. I was shocked Alan when you were in the bottom three. I can't think of any of the other guys that could have done this routine. They made you look fantastic. The intensity you gave for a Jazz dancer and a sensational dress.

Mary - It is all about passion. Fever in the mind. I have a fever, you had passion all over that stage. It was crazy. Off the charts. It is the physicality of that routine, how tough that is to do. Jasmine smoldering.

"RE: Jasmine M and Alan"

Judges loved it, but I did not. ho hum.

"RE: Jasmine M and Alan"

"Makenzie and Paul"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:30 PM
Jazz with Sean Cheeseman.

He is a scientist she is his deadly fembot.

Nigel - I loved the routine. The heat getting to the choreographers. Pregnant Ballerina break. Where are all these flips coming from. Shocking to me you were in the bottom Makenzie, that was fanstastic.

Mary - loved beginning end, bits in the middle. Makenzie you are humble and talented, it speaks volumes. How you did that snake you emboddied this whole routine.

Christina - Paul, you told to hold your carriage, let it go, when you clicked his head and gave us that breath before you moved, good stuff.

"RE: Makenzie and Paul"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 09:53 PM
I loved that, and not just because of my lvoe for Makenzie. Bottom 6? ridiculous. She is so great. I just hope she ages better than Kelly LeBrock!

"RE: Makenzie and Paul"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-03-13 at 00:30 AM
Mackenzie & Paul|Jazz: Another good number. Chemistry was there. They did great. Truthfully my only complaint is why the choreographer chose to add a couple of strange moves in there.

"RE: Makenzie and Paul"
Posted by aethelstan on 07-04-13 at 01:27 PM
As soon as I saw this post, I suspected that it would be a derivative of one of Cheesman's better routines he did in SYTYCD Canada. So, I looked it up and here it is for your viewing pleasure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSEdR8HKKRU
well, go figure, some of the moves were identical.

Have to say I preferred the Canadian one better. Could be because I preferred the song.

"Mariah and Carlos"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:35 PM
Stacey Tookie.

He has been in an accident and doesn't remember her.

Dead In The Water
Ellie Goulding

I didn't get the emotion until the end.

Mary - How did you fall into the bottom. Carlos so sorry to see you go. America's loss. Mariah, little miss hip hop, you just went to another place, you keep that up. Oozed with passion. It was stunning.

Christina - So sorry, America got this wrong. The interconnectedness there was no disconnect. The chemistry better than anything. Thank you for doing that for her. Because you do krump able to do what you do, so much pain in what you were telling us, forget it.

Nigel - we can get your emotions, you did the most brilliant job until emoting. She had a lot to say about you, grow exponentially. Carlos, the cruelest cut, good luck with everything.

"RE: Mariah and Carlos"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 10:00 PM
I agree that Carlos shouldn't be going home, but I think that Mariah should be going home.

That said, Mariah is doing better out of her genre than Jade (but Jade gets kept?)

"RE: Mariah and Carlos"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-03-13 at 00:36 AM
Mariah & Carlos|Contemporary: ...and we're right back into the muck. I don't agree with the judges. At. All. Mariah actually looked like a man in a dress. NOT the worst of the evening but no where near the top either.

"Amy and Fik-Shun"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:45 PM
Nappy Tabs routine.
Two bellman who love their job, but want to have a good time at work.

After Party
Dorrough Music

That was fun.

Christina - I loved that so much. Last week you had the moment of the week. Fik-shun you really are something special. You are only as good as the person in front of you and she brings you up. You make us all feel good.

Nigel - I knew when you walked on the stage, you light up the studio. Your personalities come out when you are dancing. Let me give you a tip, keep dancing like that an you will will find yourselves in the finaly.

Mary - what hotel were Nappy Tabs at. you were the pre party, the party party and the after party, you have the likability factor.

"RE: Amy and Fik-Shun"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 10:06 PM
Huh, final routine last week and second to last tonight? They are taking no chances with this couple whom they seem to love.

That was fun and well done, though the tongue-baths from the judges will wear on me.

"RE: Amy and Fik-Shun"
Posted by tribephyl on 07-03-13 at 00:45 AM
Amy & Fik-Shun|Hip Hop: Soooo fun! Great job! Technically spot on, great chemistry, amazing musicality. Wow! Really great! One of my favs of the evening.

"Jenna and Tucker"
Posted by Snidget on 07-02-13 at 09:56 PM
Cha Cha Cha...Dmitry!!!! thud.

He acts like he owns the place and she has to put him in his place.

I Like It Like that
Pete Rodriguez.

Mary - You are a star up there, in your element, everything you do will be, you will shift from one week to the next. Another sexy number. Tucker there was a lot of guiding, missed the rhythmical action. Some things just so so. Terrific job with partnering.

Christina - I was entertained, the story was spot on. I forgot you were contemporary with that pose at the start, at the end, that raw dirtiness it requires. Jenna you are awesome.

Nigel - Debbie Downer. Jenna in your genre, there wasn't enough Cha Cha, do separate the genres. When it starts blending in we have lost the idea of this format. Tucker you look like oyu have the style for it. A bit more Dancing with the Stars, otherwise like another routine.

"RE: Jenna and Tucker"
Posted by byoffer on 07-02-13 at 10:11 PM
Oh what legs, she's hot.

I enjoyed that routine. Tucker was hiding a bit, but with her legs on stage how could he not be hidden?

"RE: Jenna and Tucker"

Jenna & Tucker|Cha Cha: Believable characters, great technicality, little slip-ups here and there, specially towards the end. But good job overall.

Pretty mucky show.
Not familiar with the new format and it seems neither are the dancers. I have to give it to Brittany and Carlos for being there at all.
Few standouts...

The Great:
Amy & Fik-Shun|Hip Hop
Jas M & Alan|Tango
Jas H & Aaron|Lyrical Hip Hop
Mackenzie & Paul|Jazz

The Good:
Alexis & Nico|Contemporary
Jenna & Tucker|Cha Cha

The Bad:
Brittany & BluPrint|Broadway
Malece & Jade|Bollywood
Mariah & Carlos|Contemporary
Hayley & Curtis|Jazz

I see Mariah and Jade again in the bottom three and perhaps the next 2 to go.

"RE: Post show thoughts"

LAST EDITED ON 07-04-13 AT 01:40 PM (EST)

Haven't had a chance to watch the show but I noticed in the comments that two of the bad pieces were numbers where one of the partners was already eliminated. These guys live off adrenaline and when you're out, you lose that. Gotta be tough.

The only number I've seen so far is Curtis and Hayley's and Curtis is far too baby-faced to play that. I've said before that with such a young group many won't be able to play the roles where maturity/world experience is an asset. I think we saw that.

Definitely seeing some separation between top 10 material and the rest. Several had back to back good routines and others had back to back bad routines.

ETA: how did Carlos and Brittany get to the bottom, Nigel? Easy. They had no face time either in the auditions or in Vegas. It's a bit disingenuous for you to say that. Still, first show cuts are really tough but at least in the past few seasons they have the meet the dancers numbers so they are seen more than once before the public needs to vote.

"RE: Post show thoughts"
Posted by aethelstan on 07-04-13 at 01:35 PM
Agree with you on the show not being all that great. There were far more memorable numbers in the first week than the second.

One thing though. Both hip hop numbers were very strong this week whereas last week they were terrible. Outside of the hip hop, I enjoyed the jazz (Paul & Makenzie) and then it drops off quickly.

I agree with Nigel that the cha cha didn't have much cha cha in it. While watching I was thinking that it didn't look like Tucker did any cha cha and just let Jenna do the cha cha-ing around him. This may be one of the only times that Nigel really calls out the choreo.

I do like that they are voting individuals and not couples because I'd save Hayley but not Curtis. BluPrint and Jade can't be long for the show either and I don't see Nigel going out of his way to save them. At this point, Mariah and Malece seem the weakest of the girls.
