"Vocal Coaching"

I would have liked to see more of that last night. I found it very interesting to see the techniques, and the contestants' reactions to them. Also, how uncomfortable it must have been to do it in front of all the others--I wonder if that diluted the effectiveness for some of them?

Brandon was told by INXS last week that he would benefit from vocal coaching, yet, on Monday, we saw he was resistant to being coached. Brandon, after what you did to "Tempted," please, listen! You say you "like where you are." Well, that's good, because if you're not willing to grow, you are going to STAY where you are, bro.

I think Brandon is more than a bit too enamored with himself. He thinks that no one can teach him anything. I am liking him less and less. And I couldn't have imagined I would have liked him any less after he mangled "Tempted" last week.

I agree that the vocal coaching segment was interesting. I hope that some of them actually take the advice.

I'm such a slut for the blues.

Amen to that...and I hope they continue to bring the coach in to keep working with them, because you can't just show someone once & expect them to fix it right away! (but yeah, Brandon totally dismissed all of it. dumb move)

I will say, some of the things the coach was saying were a little bizarre. (you're in trouble if you can't hum & swallow at the same time? in what world?)

I hope the coaching will steer Jessica away from her Cher moments.

I think his point with that is that she tends to sing too far back in her throat, i.e., she swallows her sound. She closes her throat too much when she sings, which is why she gives off those weird Cher-like sounds. So his point was... if you can't hum with your throat closed that much, what makes you think you can sing that way? And it certainly seemed like it helped, from what little they showed... her voice was MUCH more open than I'd ever heard it before.

Ohhh!! I missed that part of the point. (I probably sneezed or something)

I thought he was telling her she should WANT to swallow & hum at the same time.

duh.

I feel better about him now.

See, this is why I wish they had shown more of the coaching sessions! It's so interesting. You seem to have experience in this area, and are able to read between the lines and figure out what the guy probably meant, while most of us are left with huh? Hum & swallow at the same time? What? Why?

Maybe the guy didn't want to give away too much free coaching over the tv, but it was probably just a time constraint, with it only being a 1/2 hour and all the other stuff they had to fit in.

LOL! Yeah!

But I don't think anyone can take the Cher out of Jessica. OK, maybe an exorcist...

Other Things I learned last night:

Brandon is a dumba$$ and will probably get thrown off when INXS gets a chance since he is not listening or learning. Also, please quit calling yourself a Southern Rocker when you are not Southern! You can be a fan of Southern Rock or reminiscent of it but not a Southern Rocker. This probably offends me more since I don't think he sings very well.

Jessica--I'm starting to feel sorry for her and like her. When she's in the house with glasses, the whole Britney Spears wanna-be vibe disappears and she seems sweet and sincere. Hopefully, she will sing well so I can throw a couple of votes her way. She also seems willing to change and wants the gig.

J.D.--still a jerk

Deanna probably has a right to feel a little paranoid after what the vocal coach said but should work on her technique so that the criticism won't be valid.

Ty and Jordis-will probably still be great.

Yeah, what is up with his Southern Rocker label? Does he refer to himself that way, or has that label been applied to him? Maybe it's the whole jeans/army jacket/bare feet thing. Maybe it's because he lead the Sweet Home Alabama sing-a-long at the house. But Dude, yer from Michigan, bro. Plus, on his blog where he talks about guitar heroes, he says that it was all AC/DC, all the time for 6 years, before branching out into other artists! Not exactly Allman Brothers.

OK, I just read his more recent blog entries, and yep, he calls himself a Southern Rocker. But he also calls himself a classic rock, blues and soul (??) singer. PLUS, he knows he sucked on Tempted, and he says that he IS, in fact, trying to use the techniques the coach gave him. So, I'm no longer annoyed with the boy for being uncoachable. Unfortunately for Brandon, I think more people will remember his comment indicating a resistance to coaching, than will view his blog entries and see that he IS listening & trying to learn and grow. Better learn fast, Brandon.

The house band didn't think the vocal coaching helped him, said Brandon wasn't applying it.
He is as weak as Tara in my opinion, and his performance this week was bad, besides he is too scruffy looking for INXS.
