"The Coys don't need the money"

That's got to be why they were so unimpressed when told of the $500,000 prize and were so focused on the fact that they were "humiliated." Anyone who could have used a few dollars would have gotten over being pissed pretty damn quick and been ecstatic that their lifestyle was about to drastically change for the better. Throughout the whole show we kept hearing how they were so conservative, etc. but what they really are is stuck up and image-conscious. Well if they're not interested in the money I'm sure plenty of people would love to take it off their hands for them.

It was $500,000 split between 6 people. After taxes there is less than $300,000. Divide by 6. That is only $50,000 a piece. Not a whole lot of money.

As for the Coy's, to say they were image conscious is an understatement.

good point! and really what is 50K for appearing on a season-long TV show? plus, dont forget that theoretically it was only 250k among the family = 150K after taxes = 30K per person

I think that they were happy about the $ (notice the father's face smiling when he heard he was getting $500k) at first his pride was hurt very bad and that is why he said this isnt about the money. I think that is a pretty normal reaction- nobody would want their daughter going on national TV and saying I made fools of my whole family and humliated them b/c they rreeeaaaly need the $.

Not to nitpick. But The Coy's only had to split it between 5 people. 2 brothers, 1 sister and then hubby and wife. The hubby and wife made out good coz they get to combine their share.
Randi got a cool 500,000 ALL to herself! She is the true winner here.
I noticed ol Dad perked up when it went from 250,000 to 500,00 for him! LOL
Oh and the comment about the season long show, it was filmed in about a month. So even if it was $50,000 a person (which it wasn't) that would be ALOT of money. How many times have you made that much in a month? Remember to us it was stretched out like a season. And really what did it last for us? 6 weeks?
Randi got a check for half a million. Her 5 family members got a check for half a million. Still a good sum in my book! ;)
