and, the premiere of Survivor: All-Stars, which debuted right after the SuperBowl.

But Survivor isn't the one and only show they have to promote.

If they think another show needs a jump start it will get the slot.

Survivor will probably do fine either way, but if they can turn another show into a hit that will do more than adding a couple of people to those who are going to watch this season of survivor anyway.

I don't know about other people, can't speak for them, but I am an avid Football fan and for the duration of the Superbowl you'd need a specialist to surgically remove my butt from my recliner if you wanted me to go anywhere.

That having been said, after 4 hours of staring hypnotically into my wide screen it really is time for a break...

If Survivor came on directly following the SB, I think many would:

a. Be returning from whatever bar or whomever's home they were watching it
b. Be trying to get rid of all the people who came over to watch it,
c. Be kind burnt out after absorbing all the gamma radiation from thier chinese made tele's
d. Be too upset because they didn't make the spread.

or...

e. Be too happy because they picked the right box in the office pool and won 5 million dollars (hahaha).

Regardless of what you do after the Super Bowl thing or think others would do after the umpteen hours of Super Bowl and pre-shows, etc. the post Super Bowl spot does seem to get good ratings and is seen as a way to launch a new show or get people fired up about an existing show.

It is about the ratings and if that slot never helped any show they'd just plug it full of an infomercial or something equally dull.

How much is the buzz (as usually the show gets some media coverage for winning the slot) and how much is people actually watch the show I dunno. However they wouldn't be using the slot for show promotion if it didn't work. There are cheaper ways to fill that slot.

Like I said, I can't (and won't) speak for everyone...

I guess I just don't fall into the sheep catagory, (e.g., Don't worry, they're like sheep, they'll follow along and watch whatever we show after the SuperBowl).

After all, what other way can you explain the (questionable) supposition that whatever follows the SuperBowl will have high ratings/viewership - people are too lazy to change the channel?...

Then there are the actual figures.. In Feb 2009 97.8 million people watched the SuperBowl, 22.9 million watched what came after it, (The Office).

Funny - the actual numbers tell another story than I am reaing in some of these posts...

In fact - over 75% of watchers were motivated to change the channel rather than watch whatever followed SuperBowl XLIII.

On the other hand we could look at WHAT followed the game rather than simply assume that the follower would be watched...

Regardless of how you judge other people, I assumed that if the network is going to bother spending money to put a show on after the Super Bowel they only do so because it makes them more money than it costs.

They are a business after all. If they weren't getting a return for putting either a new show on afterward or a special (and usually more costly) episode of a regular show on they would stop doing it.

Unless of course you are talking NBC, I have doubts about their understanding of any sort of business model at this time.

The only ones trying to judge other people are those who presume to know what people will do following the SuperBowl.

It's a crap shoot, the historical data proves that beyond any doubt, and, there doesn't seem to be very much data which supports the opinion (which bloggers and pundits are putting out there) that any given network is basing grave decisions on it. The specttrum of shows, how long they've been on, whether they're "premiers" or not... it's all over the board.

There are as many reasons for and against watching as there are viewers. What the data shows is that, it seems a great many people, (like myself and others who have posted here), will tune into the shows they like to watch regardless of what precedes or follows them - and regardless of what the Networks think or want us to do... ;)

Do they tell a different story? What were the ratings on the other episodes of The Office that season? Were they as high as the 22.9 million that watched it following the Superbowl? Was that higher than the average of the previous season? Did The Office last season see an overall increase in viewers (In other words, did it pick up new viewers as a result of following the Superbowl?)

But, those numbers don't show what the Superbowl viewership was that year, so there's no way to know how many people hung around to watch.

My husband and I don't watch the Stupor Bowl.

The Stupor Bowl never ends on time.

We're not going to sit through the last 5 minutes of the game (which takes about an hour to play - I still can't figure that one out) in order to catch Survivor or any other show.

I'm glad Survivor is going to be in it's usual timeslot.
