QUESTION for you guys - Why is Simon telling these young people there to young to be there when they put them there? Isn't the age limit 16 ro something? Doesnt make sense to me.

I hope I posted right. I will be waiting for your responses.

They judges are responsible for them getting to the final 32, but after that it's up to "America", right?

And given the quality of most of the auditions that we saw, they didn't have much to work with.

I really think the age limit should be *at least* 18. I think Simon was trying to impress upon Jon S. "Yes, you have raw talent, but you are two years too soon for this competition.

I am glad you posted this because I enjoy responding to your posts...

OH Green stop you are going to make me cry!!!

Yeah 18 should be the limit. Got these babies in the competition then tell them there to young to be there. I don't get it.

I have felt guilty all morning over you! I just wanted to say (to everybody) I know things have been a bit rough over in this corner of the boards and it all started over one troll. And I know how hard it is as a newbie because when I go over to the OT, I feel unknown and ignored. I just keep posting and I am slowly begining to get to know people. Sometimes sending a Personal Message helps. So hang in there and if things seem kind of exclusive, it gets better as you get to know people.

I think the quality of the competition will improve, if an age limit is set.

I'll pay attention to you G-Monstah if you tell me what Pirate Booty is......

I bet it's a Ben & Jerry's flavor, isn't it?

AwgDawg, AwgDawg, AwgDawg...You never had Pirate Booty? There is also Fruity Booty to be had but that is not as good. I know you guys have it down there because I got some in Maryland a couple of weeks ago. It is kind of a cross between cheese puffs and pop corn. Maybe more puff than corn. It is white not orange...a plus if you have an aversion to orange fingers and teeth. Trader Joe's sales it...Fresh Foods...large Giants sell it. Go get some now.

I know what I'm doing tomorrow.... searching for some Pirate Booty.

I still think Ben & Jerry should name an ice cream flavor Pirate Booty. Arghhhhh!

I agree, and think that Simon and the others should have realized a little earlier that the 16 year olds were going to have some trouble. It almost isn't fair, either, because they have to spend lots of their time getting *home* schooled. That must separate them from the older performers a bit, and eat into their rehearsal time-- or at the very least their down time!

I agree with you. IMO, none of these kids are able to compete at the level that the public wants. 18is a more reasonable age limit, IMO. Diana, Jasmine and John are all still baby-faced. Give them time to grow up.

On the other hand, as Randy Lite pointed out, Christina Agulara (I don't care how it's spelled) could sing the socks off most of these contestants at an even younger age. Heck, Brittney could kinda carry a tune at 12. And Beyonce is also as worthy as any AI finalist in her home movies from age 13 on. All three of these rawther successful lil divas (and I don't own any of their CDs, relax) could also dance, to some degree, at the same time they sang, on key, with feeling.
I am not sure the dirth of charisma can be entirely attributed to age/lack of experience.

Hey Green - I think I have a rude question and you don't have to anwser. You seem so polite and protective like in your responses. The way you interaact with the others is so sweet like. Ok my question is how old are you? I am 39 married with a 13 and 8 year old. I added the married with kids thing so you would not think I'm coming on to you or something. (BIG SMILE)!!

Now I hope I don't get any responses saying I'm not suppose to get personal. If I'm wrong charge it to my mind and not my heart.

I am 34 and half and married and as of one month ago really want to have a baby. Mr. Monstah says we can start trying in October.

Well have fun trying!!! (smile) OK. One more question. How do you get the smily faces and all those other things and how do you get the contestant pictures at the end of your posting and how do you get the nice signatures? I know you are going to send me somewhere that explains but where.

The Help Form is a good place to start. See the buttons over to the left? Click on "Off Topic" and on the next page you will see "Help Forum". Read the questions and responses. Some are quite helpful. The smiley face is easy. Just type it and it comes out. As for the nice signatures they are easy to make. Watch this:

That took me all of two minutes to make. (OK...I hear some of you out there laughing at my shaky sig pic. and saying "it looks like it took you less than two minutes to make." I am taking down names, AwgDawg, Brazen, Breezy and Ginger...) Anyway, there is a whole chapter dedicated to sig pics on the help forum. You are welcome to use the one I made. (Although, it looks kind of crappy) If you want to use it, click reply with quotes and delete everything except the phrase begininng with http and ending with gif. Copy this with your mouse and then go to user and paste it where it implies you should. The help forum will guide you through it. If you have any questions send me a PM. It is that mailbox icon near post. Got it?

Edited to add: Definitely send me a Personal Message if you have any more questions. We have gone way off tangent and we should now take it off the boards to be considerate to people who really want to read about Idol and not all of this blabber.

Hey, I will NEVER pick on anyone's graphic abilities. Couldn't photoshop my way out of a wet paper bag. Am complete beneficiary of the talents of SurvivaBear for my signpic.

I kind of like the apple signpic - had a nice, naive "tramp art" look to it. NO, I am not saying you're a tramp.

Hey applesugar
When you are on the compose response screen, if you look just above the gray box you'll see "Emotion icon short cuts" click on that and it will tell you what key strokes to type for the different smiley faces.

Hey Green and my other new friends

To lazy to go over to that place I'm supposed to go to. But I will. I had to fight the kids for the internet becasse they wanted to go to Cartoonnetwork.

What should be taken into consideration also is the situation these kids are in. They probably do very well singing in front of family, friends, local shows, etc. with the comfort of their own home nearby. Now they not only are thrust into the spotlight on National TV but they are also living together with strangers and tons of new situations. Age is bound to play a part especially learning to accept criticism with poise and brush off a bad performance.

I like this idea for a thread Apple!

believe it or not, the "older" singers that they beat out were worse....

The judges put the best 32 together (Geroge was #33, remember??) based on 3? performances. Now that they've seen them 7 or 8 times since then, I think Simon realizes that they are not good enough to win. I don't think he believes they are too young in terms of age, but that they are young kids trying to appeal to older viewers, and not really "acting their age", which is a problem because they are not getting "their people" - a group of fans to identify with them EVERY time they sing...If Diana got up there and did a "teeney-bopper" song every week (that fit with the theme) she would at least appeal to a fan base.

One last thought - this is a business, and Simon doesn't need to market the younger singer, there are enough, and they are all WAY better than our contestants (JSimp/Brit/etc) so if he could have his say, he'd try to arrange a diverse top 3, much like last year, so he could put out 3 different albumns, and sell to THE WHOLE WORLD...

"Not too young"
Posted by Ricky on 04-16-04 at 05:58 PM
Diana and Johnny Red are not too young for AI. They are too old for American Juniors, they belong with the big dawgs on AI. Diana just needs to find her niche. John has already found his I think.

"RE: Simon Said"
Posted by 712 on 04-16-04 at 06:22 PM
I don't think he meant too young to be in the competition, just that they lack the experience or maturity or stage presence that some of the others have.

What threw me off was when he said about Diana that she was like an "overgrown child," but the next thing he said was something about her being an "old soul." Anyone else catch this? Or am I mistaken?
