Jesus! No, I mean the brother who sang "In the Still of the Night". Noel was OK, but Jesus sounded wonderful.

Glad they kept Scooter Girl around for her quirkiness. Nice to see someone with an actual personality.

Favorite lines of the night? Second place goes to Randy telling the twins they'd need a lobotomy to improve. First place was Simon's response to Scatgirl, when she said God was on her side - "God's taking the day off."

I just hee hawed when Simon said that to her. God most assuredly wasn't on her side that day.

I lvoed Simon of course!

I really thought they were going to put the military girl through. I was surprised they didn't. She wasn't bad.

Unchained Melody boy was cute and good.

Scooter girl: the scooter thing was cute but if she stays this quirky I can see it getting old. I agree with Simon, though, that it's refreshing to see some sense of humour.

Route 66 chick was un-frickin-believable.

Yeah, I thought Military Girl's voice was at least as good as Carmen Rasmussen. Was surprised that The Nicole Formerly Known as Scooter Girl had so good a voice.

Liked red-headed guy. Didn't think they showed us too many good candidates (I can't remember one from the next -- except Frenchie! -- until the pack dwindles a bit).

I loved the way that Simon made that bet with the one girl to sing at the bar and see the audience reaction. People were clearing out before she even got through one phrase. I would've been one of the people leaving too. That wasn't even bad karoke.

Three is the perfect number.

I thought they shouldn't have told all of those people the bet.

Now she gets to be Bet Loser Girl when she gets home.

"RE: So, who did you lvoe?"
Posted by Bebo on 01-20-04 at 12:17 PM
Actually, I think it helped knowing the bet. Some people think Simon is so mean and would stick it out no matter what. I thought based on some murmurs before she started that was going to happen. But she drove them off.

Unchained Melody Guy was a cutie! His singing was also wonderful. I think he may be the total package.

Not sure about ScooterGirl. I wasn't that crazy about her voice, but she did have a cute personality.

The brothers sounded good. I also liked the one that sang "Still of the Night" better.

The crooner had a smooth voice, too, but I doubt he'll get far in this type of competition unless he chooses some different songs. His style is not "Idolish."

Scat Girl, OMG! Somebody get this girl a tape recorder so she can hear how bad she sounds.

"RE: So, who did you lvoe?"
Posted by geg6 on 01-20-04 at 12:14 PM
Gotta agree that "Unchained Melody" guy was superb. Also thought the crooner guy can sing up a storm. The twins were excellent, but I actually liked the second one better. Scooter Girl---eh! She seemed a bit full of herself in too many ways to count. Not that great a singer, either. The Army girl was way better in my book and a better personality and sense of humor. Poor Scat Girl, she's delusional. But nobody has mentioned my favorite loser of the night...the Cher "impersonator" from Cypress, I believe. I know it's a small island, but couldn't they come up with anything better for their top 7? Maybe they just kept her for the comedy factor. They might have a strange sense of humor on Cypress.

"Military girl"
Posted by anotherkim on 01-20-04 at 12:46 PM
yeah, what was wrong with her? She was a bit Broadwayish, yes, but she certainly had more American Idol pizazz, IMO, than the Dean Martin crooner did. I loved his voice, but what on EARTH was with that impersonation????????

Ok, count me in the group that lvoed the Unchained Melody guy. He's got my vote-he has the talent, looks the whole package. I think Scooter girl will grow on me...that was a gutsy move on her part to bring a gimmick. I also liked the boy twins a lot. The rest all blur together. I really don't know how the judges can sit through some of that crap. It'd drive me insane.

My favorite was Archie. As in the Archie comics. He was so cute and had some serious pipes, when he wasn't doing his Dean Martin impersonation.

Scooter girl (Nicole) was good, but I think that she "scooted" in based on her personality. I thought, "Hmm, she's in serious need of a good makeover." I think with a cute haircut, toned-down color, and better use of makeup, she'd be able to get "the look". A vocal coach can steer her away from her Broadway tendencies.

I thought Airborne Girl was good, and I couldn't believe they didn't want her. She was MUCH better than most of the tone-deaf contestants.

Jesus and Noel (were they Christmas babies?) were good, but I think Jesus was better.

And last....Unchained Melody Guy. Ahhh. That was a terrific rendition. I can't see him getting cut in Hollywood. The true test will be the phone votes.

Army Girl still has a chance at the wildcard stage. They spent a lot of time on her last night to just dump her like that.

Isn't that how Carmine Ragussa got to the finals last year? Didn't Simon pull her up from the minor leagues?

no, the wildcarders(?) came from the first cuts from the Hollywood call in votes. They were basically the 3rd best in each category. None came from the city dropouts.

If New York is a sample of what I have to look forward to, it will be a very long season.

Unchained Melody Boy was not impressive to me. He couldn't seem to pace the song with the right pitch, so he just slowed it way way way way down. He really should meet the Chipmunks.

SCOOTER GIRL- My love! I thought her singing voice needed a little work, but all in all it was very funny and nice to see someone who didn't take the competition all that seriously make it on to the next round

JESUS AND NOEL- Weird names and I didn't think that they did all that well, military girl was better than them

The UNCHAINED MELODY guy was just ok, he seems full of himself, and could prolly do ok without AI

The FRANK SINATRA IMPERSONATOR was pretty good, but i don't think that's what Simon wants to have on the show for very long

The Bad-

SCAT GIRL- funny, and I think that she porbobly knows how bad she is and that she didn't have a chance

CYPRESS- She would do well in a Cher sound-alike contest

WOW! I really, really, REALLY hope what we saw in NY was the best that stop had to offer. If so, the talent level is way down this go around.

That said, I liked Army Girl and Scooter Girl as well. Thought it was interesting that Simon commented on the lack of fun and personality amongst the last group when it seemed like he couldn't wait to get rid of Vanessa - the only live wire in the entire bunch - ASAP.

Was not impressed with Jesus or Noel.

Unchained Guy was VERY good is has to be an early favorite.

Not off to a good start.

Atlanta seemed a bit better. LOVE Macy Gray girl. I agree with Simon that she has the best voice I've heard so far in the competition.

The Kim Caldwell chick won't get to the round of 32.

Paula's boyfriend fills the big, cute, dumb whiteboy (read JOSH) role this go around.

I had such high hopes for AI3 when all the judges talked about finding a unique voice. Well, four more cities to go and Asian Mumbling Chick is still to come!

I liked the Daddy's girl, but probably because I thought it was sweet that her dad was so proud...can't really remember what she sang. None of the ones that went thru to the next round really impressed me, more often than not I thought "he/she wasn't that good".

What was with the leg-warmer girl that lost 80 pounds to be on the show? I thought she was a joke audition until she started crying.

"RE: So, who did you lvoe?"
Posted by geg6 on 01-21-04 at 12:38 PM
I completely forgot about Daddy's girl. She was pretty good, but the best part was Daddy. What a sweetheart! He got me all choked up because I, myself, was a Daddy's girl (you can ask my siblings who will be happy to discuss how much of one). Lost my Daddy a few years back, but he had the same reaction to every success I ever had. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Got me going again just thinking about it. Okay, love her for Daddy's sake!

"RE: So, who did you lvoe?"
Posted by Mizz Eve on 01-25-04 at 03:47 PM
Wasn't daddy's girl the one that they argued about? Simon didn't like her. Randy defended her, saying that she was so young, so of course her singing mentors are Britney Spears, etc. Paula said she was "affected" and the stupid girl didn't even know what that means.

Or, do I have the contestants confused?

Daddy's Girl was good.

Paula's Boy had the looks, but the voice won't get him far.

Flashdance Girl has major problems. She lost eighty pounds just for AI? She thought that was a good performance?

Macy Gray was awesome.

What was with the guy threatening to SUE the judges for laughing at his horrible singing voice?

Kim Caldwell II was too Kim Caldwelly.

These auditions crack me up! Some of the peeps were obviously there as a joke and just to get their face on tv. However, there are some with serious problems if they think they really can sing. The flashdance girl? Come on. Have her friends and family been telling her she can sing all these years? I just don't understand it. I mean, some of them were devistated to hear that they weren't good enough (or they are damn good actors).

Simon is right. Many of them were wasting his time. They were wasting my time too. I don't want to see people who are there just as a joke. Sheesh. The dog in the garage next door sounds better than many of these losers.

That's what I keep asking my husband. Do NONE of these people have friends/family??? If you were planning to audition on national television, would you not sing your audition for at least a small audience first just to get feedback and practice?

Friends and family can't always tell these kids.
Just look at their fragile psyches - I bet most of them can't take it anyway (just look at Sam on the Apprentice).
Or
Their f&f tell them that they are ok, but need some work.
or
Their f&F tell them they are bad, and they just rebel and deny it anyways.

Their voice instructors tell them they are getting better and good, to encourage them and keep them coming back.

Believe me, i had a friend who was tone-deaf and taking voice lessons. She couldn't act that great either. I was director for a school project and didn't cast her in a lead - and she was mad at me and didn't get it. She is CONVINCED that she will be on Bway one day. Because she is confident, and she wants it, altho she doesn't aggressively pursue diction & acting lessons. IT broke my heart, i couldn't tell her she wasn't all that. I'm not a professional. And sometimes, she got cast in stuff, so how do i know she won't be good enough for someone else? I did tell her -areas for improvement.

Living in the NY area for a few years, I am not at ALL surprised by these kids and their over-confidence. they all talk smack. They must be taught that if you want it, exuding confidence will get you it.

I do understand what you are saying Angelfood but some of the people just clearly can't sing. If my sister/brother/friend wanted to audition for AI, and they clearly couldn't sing, I most definitely would say something to them so they wouldn't embarrass themselves, and let them then make the decision. You and I may not be professionals in the music business, but if someone's voice makes you cringe, then I'd say they can't sing.

However, having just said all that, I realize there are tons of professional singers with CD's that make me cringe when I hear them

I guess it's a matter of taste (and pride).

Only the unscrupulous ones. Mr. B is a voice instructor, and I know that he and his colleagues will be quite candid with their students on how far they can go.

Some people don't want to hear it. He's had parents drag their kids into his studio, sure they have the next Broadway star. When he tells them they don't have what it takes for that, they just keep dragging their kid around until they find someone who'll tell them what they want to hear.

Yes, sorry, that was meant to only be in reference to the voice teachers mentioned on the show or in the above thread, to explain why A FEW voice teachers would do that.

and some are too kind-hearted and say that they are improving (which is true), but is mistaken for encouragement by the bad singers. OR in my friends case, she went once to my teacher, but he told her the truth, so she found one who told her "what she wanted to hear" - just like Bebo said.

So (i'm fascinated now) what is your DH's take on the show? (if posted already or in the forums for the 1st 2 shows, pls give me a hint and I'll search later). Does he like the judges and their honesty?

As for the parents dragging the kids - so horrible. But not uncommon, I'm sure. Just like modeling, acting, etc.

So (i'm fascinated now) what is your DH's take on the show?

He doesn't watch it too often - too painful for him. But he thinks that being honest about not having a future in the business is the kindest thing that these judges can do.

He can also pretty much pick out whose voice is going to suffer as the competition goes, because of their mechanics. The ones who have some solid training know how to take care of themselves and can handle the rigors of that schedule better, but the ones who aren't are going to be hoarse and cracking before too long.

He watched the first two nights this week - he thought some of them were OK, but no one really impressed him.

yes, I could also tell she was good enough just from that (esp. after what was before her). They should have had her go out to the main room and finish the song - just to show the others what a "singer" sounds like.

Over the Top girl - I agree, but she has the raw talent. You can always have her pull back and give less, definitely could work with that - glad Randy saw that.

Guess they are not going to Houston next year.
But I think that they should do different cities anyway.
Go to DC, Denver, Saint Louis, Phoenix, LA and Orlando.

The blonde girl who sang the one or two lines before they let her through--hilarious! If Army Girl had tried out in Houston, she would have made the cut. I don't think she was spectacular, but if she were really one of the first ones to audition, they might have been conservative and not let her through, based on possibly better talent looming.

I knew exactly what Paula meant by "affected". It was true for the young girl as is was for the Kim Caldwell-a-like in Atlanta. They're fake and cheesy.

Yeah, she's beautiful, but I'm sure there are plenty of women/gay men who vote and aren't voting for her cause she's HOT. How about the blind peeps who can hear the quality of her voice over her body? They'll vote according to what they hear, and not what they see.

She has every chance to win this thing, just as much as the other peeps advancing do. Besides, this is a SINGING contest, where voice over looks wins all. If you want to vote based on looks alone, wait until the next Miss America comes along!

Okay, in LA, they said that x number of people didn't make it through the first round. The rest got to go audition in front of Simon and Randy.

So does that mean that the little "She Bangs" guy got through a first round?!?

The prison guard had the pipes, but she sang through her nose. Like Randy said, it's weird. It was like she was trying to sound like a boy band or something.

Fifties chick was...different. It will be interesting to see how far she goes.

Cheerleader was okay. Overrated IMO.

I lvoe Simon, but it was mean how he let that guy think he was out because of how he answered the money question.

I really liked the very last guy. The footballer with a huge voice. Did you notice his voice when he came out after he advanced? Awesome!

I thought that was odd too about the 2 different auditions and Mr. Shebangs guy getting through. It makes you think that there is a certain few let through for the viewing audience to laugh at. How sad!

I thought that Mr. Charity should have been let through, he had a decent voice. I don't normally say this cause I adore Simon, but he sucks ass for his childish stunt with the question.

There were others I liked as well, but I'm having a brain fart.

Loved the football player, especially once he got outside with his brother. He can sing Puccini, for God's sake!!!! I think that the cheerleader got through on looks and the lack of real competition in that audition crowd.

"So does that mean that the little "She Bangs" guy got through a first round?!?"

I've read articles written by people who have been thru the AI audition process and they pretty much all say the same thing. You are screened by an original crew, then sing for the producers and they judge whether or not you get thru to Paula, Randy & Simon. You get thru if you are really good, really awful, or just mediocre but have a good story, something to catch their attention.

I liked the football player, but I really liked the guy who sang Desperado. I love that song and cringed when he said he was going to sing it, but he did a pretty good job. I thought the prison guard girl had a freaky dynamic going on with her friend. "We can only leave if you sing. Sing!" Yikes.

Any big burly football player dude who not only has a great personality but sings the crap out of Puccini, is okay in my book.

The cheerleader was fine, not as great as Simon was saying, but she's got the total package that they're looking for. If you've to a good voice to begin with, anyone can be taught to sing better and in a certain style. Look at Richard Gere in Chicago. All he knew how to sing was rock before they taught him jazz. So, anyhoo, I can see where Simon was excited about her.

The highlight of last night for me was the "She Bang" guy. The look on his face when they told him to stop was pricless. Little pout and "Did I make it?" look in his eyes. I felt sorry for him, but not too sorry if you know what I mean.

Missed the show last night but someone was brave enough to sing an aria for American Idol? Wow! Talk about going against type! You mention Puccini. Was the aria Nesun Dorma? To try to sing something like that acapella is truely amazing! However, I think that he will have to show some versatility with other music - can't see the "public" voting an opera singer as the next idol no matter how good he is!

"RE: So, who did you lvoe?"
Posted by Milan23 on 01-28-04 at 12:40 PM
Actually, he sang James Ingram for his audition but broke into the operatic bit as he exited. (Sorry I can't help with which one)

He had a nice voice, alot of people have said that he's too arrogant, but I didn't really get that. Confident, yes. I guess there's a fine line between confidence & arrogance and how it comes across.

The funny thing about the "she bang" guy is that he actually stayed in key and hit thr right notes. Obviously he was not a good singer but if you go back and listen, he never once sang out of key. It was a key all of his own, I will say, but nonetheless.
I loved his dance. Poor thing, but he was cute. I almost felt a little badly for him.

Now I have to totally agree with you. I agree that she probably was not good enough to win. But he told her she couldn't sing at all? I thought she was better than some who got through. I didn't understand that one at all. I think had she been given a chace she would have been one of those who grew throught the competition.

Mind you, I only saw two of the episodes thus far (stupid traveling and stupid family who would rather watch Smallville on Wednesday nights) - scooter girl audition night and last night's.

There weren't many standouts in those two episodes.

Fantasia - definitely my favorite gal so far. She oozes that extra something and I love her unique voice. She's better than Macy Gray, IMO.

The tall black guy who Simon said was too 'mature' or old or something. WOW, what a voice! Ricky (also 'too old' for Simon) was my favorite last season and I think this guy might be my favorite this season.

Kira Scott - like her voice and her original song was impressive given the time contstraints. If she would relax on the jabs, she'd be that much better...Paula said something about being surprised to get that 'tude form her, so it must have been something she hadn't done before.

Scooter girl - I can't help but like her. She's so different and a breath of fresh air, and she does have a nice voice...not very pop-friendly, but she is certainly better than many of our current female pop stars.

I am anxious to hear Jesus after the comments here.

I kinda liked the blond country-esque girl that was cut (she had the song about her boyfriend liking boys). She seemed spunky.

I'm so glad that annoying little 16 year old blond who thought she was the most amazing singer on the planet is gone. Good grief could her head get any bigger? The elevator scene with what I am assuming is her dad? That girl needs a serious attitude adjustment - I can't believe she talked to her father like that. Good riddance.
