"Rules of the race if you want to win"

Rule 1: Always read your clue.

Rule 2: Never lose your clue.

Rule 3: Never lose your passport.

Rule 4: Never spend your money on silly things.

From PepeLePew13:
Rule 5: Never leave your bags in a taxi when you run off to do a task.

Rule 6: Learn to drive stick-shift & learn the meaning of the words Diesel and Gasoline.

From michel:
Rule 7: Don't waste time window shopping.

Also from michel:
Rule 8: Don't stop to pee.

What rules have I missed?

Don't forget to pay your cab driver.

Don't use an Express Pass unless you're in danger of elimination.

You can eat when you reach the Pit Stop.

Check for other flights/buses/trains/pack mules/anything heading in that direction.

If the rulebook didn't forbid it, try it.

Recruit locals.

Negotiate every possible cash expenditure. The five dollars you talked them down three legs ago is your express train ticket now.

Don't hug Phil. He hates that.

Focus on when the flight/bus/train/ferry arrives at the destination, not when it leaves the departure point. The earliest departure may not equate to the earliest arrival.

And this includes not assuming everyone else is on the same flight as you even while you lost sight of them while waiting for your departure.

From dabo:
Rule 19: Learn to swim!

From Karchita:
Rule #20: Don't bicker with your partner.

Comment from michel about above rule #20:
Not sure about that one because some teams are cast ONLY for their potential explosions.

#whatever. Don't forget to change your money to the local currency at the airport/train station. There were more problems with this on this cycle than I remember before.

Next rule - if you're afraid of heights, either try to get over your phobia (very difficult, which I know from being acrophobic) or trade off enough with your partner so that they, hopefully not having the same fear, can do any height related tasks.

Don't just stand there, do something. Even if you're not sure it's the right thing to do, it's probably a better idea than just standing there and waiting for something to help you.

Some more rules

Rule #24: Learn the general strengths and weaknesses of your partner and know your own (who's the better navigator, who's better at eating, etc.)

Rule #25: Learn how to run with full backpacks.

Rule #26: Bring lots of nutrient bars on the Race (and most likely water bottles too). You'll need them when you're on the go and need something to eat or drink.

I copied this from the 11/6? Spoiler thread.

# 14? Although not as common as in earlier races, you might face an eating challenge. These are rarely vegetarian friendly, or for that matter, diet friendly. Be prepared to gorge yourself on something that you would never dream of eating.

And a codicil to that:

If the eating challenge is a Roadblock and you aren't good with meat, are on a diet, or are just a picky eater (like I am, perhaps due to Asperger's Syndrome), make your partner do it. If it's a Detour and any of the same conditions applies, skip it. If it's a Fast-Forward and you don't realize it until you get there, suck it up and start chowing down.

Additionally, if the eating tasks looks too hard the moment they put down the plate - skip the task and take the time cost instead of wasting race time.

Better to wait 30 minutes at the finish line than waste 30 minutes eating, then failing or not you end up running the race while feeling sick.

You have to be careful when to quit or not, but especially if there are two diffirent tasks and one is eating and the other is not then there is no time cost if you switch your task fast.

- MAKE UP YOUR MIND EARLY.

Last we heard that penalty was 4 hours so, if you want to skip a task, get someone else to do the same after you decided to skip it. Their penalty will start after yours!

Rule #? Always travel in a pack, especially one containing slower runners than yourself. Going at it alone, especially on an airplane is foolish unless it's the last leg.

Rule #umpteen: Do whatever it takes to legally make things harder for other teams. U-turn them, block the elevator with your cart (i.e. the Guidos), just happen to stroll in front of the escalator as an opponent is trying to get by, etc.

Learn how to paddle a canoe. While you likely won't be paddling an actual canoe, learning the basics of how paddling/rowing works will probably come in handy.

Don't trust any other racer and make sure no other racer trusts you, that way, even if you are nice enough to share info, the other racers will have to verify what you told them and not just take your word for it. I can't really cite any instances where this has happened, but it's how I would run the race.
