Undercover Boss: Survivor Edition

America’s struggling to shake off the recession.
Public distrust of wealthy CEO’s is off the charts.
To find a way to redeem themselves more bosses are searching for radical ways to connect with their workforce. They want and need to find out what’s really going on in their companies.

Each week we follow a different boss of a major corporation as they go undercover in their own company. We watch the executive as they leave the comfort of their home and office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their companies. While working alongside their employees, they see the effects that their decisions have on others. They see where the problems lie within their organizations and get an up-close look at both the good and the bad. They even might discover the unsung heroes who make their companies run.

This week we follow Mark Burnett, Producer and head of Mark Burnett Productions. The Boss will trade in his home, car, private bathroom, food and all luxuries to transform himself and pose as a contestant on Survivor: Nicaragua. Survivor is a reality television game show. In the show, contestants are isolated in the wilderness and compete for cash and other prizes. The show uses a system of progressive elimination, allowing the contestants to vote off other tribe members until only one final contestant remains and wins the title of "Sole Survivor". Entertainment Weekly has called Survivor the Number 1 reality series of all time. Because of the nature of this reality series, Mark must stay in character until the end of the series. Only you, the viewer will know.

This experience will take a physical and emotional toll. Tune into the final show to see how his teammates react to find out who he really is.

Who is Mark Burnett?

This Boss heard about a French adventure competition, Raid Gauloises in 1991. He joined the Raid, and called his team American Pride. It didn’t matter if he won or not because he saw a business opportunity in the competition, and decided to bring a similar race to America. His first entry into the reality show genre was Eco-Challenge. Mark was right about the opportunity. During the past 19 years, he has become a reality show icon. Mr. Burnett has produced the following shows:
Eco-Challenge ~ Survivor ~ The Apprentice ~ The Restaurant ~ The Casino ~ Rock Star ~ Combat Missions ~ The Contender ~ Martha Stewart ~ Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? ~ Pirate Master ~ On the Lot ~ Amne$ia ~ My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad ~ Jingles ~ Shark Tank ~ Bully Beatdown ~ Starmaker ~ How'd You Get So Rich? ~ Expedition Africa ~ Toughest Cowboy ~ Wedding Day ~ MTV Movie Awards, 2007, 08, 09 ~ Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp ~ Sarah Palin's Alaska

Burnett's series have been nominated for 67 Emmy Awards of which he has won two, along with four People's Choice Awards. Time has called Burnett one of the Most Influential People in the World Today. He has won numerous awards, elected into the Broadcast and Cable Hall of Fame, and honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Can this iconic man blend with 19 other contestants trying to win one million dollars?
Can he fool the camera and sound people who have been with him for many years?
The hardest challenge he faces is Jeff Probst. Will he be able to fool his long-time friend?

He believes he can. Mark tells us;

I have had some plastic surgery to disguise my facial features. I am serious about this and need to live with my tribe mates 24/7. I have dyed my hair gray and have started to grow a beard. My daughter did not recognize me until I spoke. I have spent six months with a voice coach to disguise my accent. From here out, I am just an out of work technology executive who worked at youHooo.

*roll Marty tape*

I am MartyMark Piombo from Mill Valley, Calif. I am an out of work Technology Executive.

Three Words to Describe myself are competitive, funny, & charismatic.

I believe the SURVIVOR Contestant I am most like is a mix of Boston Rob and Russell. They were relentless, clever, devious, and would do anything to win. I will play the game in a similar fashion. I know I will become rough around the edges so my mantra is to Remain Calm.

The reason I am on SURVIVOR is that I consider it the ultimate challenge. I am in great shape. I like to push myself in extreme situations.

I believe I will be the sole SURVIVOR because I have been in cutthroat pressure-cooker situations and I have succeeded. I am downright certain I could manipulate people and get them to vote my way. I will play this game HARD! I did not manage $400 million dollars at youHooo by being a nice guy. I know how to manipulate people and maneuver them. I can double tract and backtrack. I know I will have a target on my back from the beginning because I do not ride coattails.

*end tape*

Mark went undercover 22 days ago.
I am excited to have a chance to play the game, to challenge myself, see what the contestants go through. I am excited to see my crew perform when they have no idea I am here.

There was no need to explain cameras to the other contestants. Cameras and testimonials are a part of Survivor. I do not fear the contestants recognizing me. However, I am concerned about the Host, Jeff Probst. Most of the contestants are recruited and have no clue who the producers are. But Jeff is another matter. I guess it depends on how good I portray “MartyMark”

*play Survivor music*

Ahhhhhh Ohhhhhhh
aa oooo eeee oo ya eee aa ooo ya ee oo ya
Music continues on. Opening credits roll.

Jeff’s voice
Previously on Survivor:

We are in Nicaragua
A country full of incredible natural beauty,
volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests
and spectacular Spanish colonial cities.
The Pacific Ocean lies to the west of the country, the Caribbean Sea to the east.

We began the 21st season with 20 Survivors trying to win a million dollars.
These twenty Survivors must overcome their differences and learn to work together
in order to survive for thirty-nine days
and have a chance at the million-dollar prize.
Or …be voted off.

The Survivors were divided into two groups.
The older tribe’s name was Espada.
They voted out Jimmy T, a fan favorite and Jimmy Johnson who coached two winning Super Bowl teams.
“Jimmy T. The Tribe has spoken.” *snuff*
“Jimmy J. The Tribe has spoken.” *snuff*

The younger tribe’s name was La Flor and had many characters.

Last week MartyMark was worried when his ally Jill was voted off.
Then the merge happened.
MartyMark boasts, “I’m back in the saddle again at Libertad.”

On the other side, Brenda and Sash began calling the shots.
They want MartyMark to go next.
NaOnka goes on a food-stealing binge.

At Tribal Council MartyMark tried to convince the tribe that Jane is dangerous.
It didn’t work and Alina was voted out.
She became the first person of the jury.

The Feud between Jane & Marty has reached critical mass.
11 are left.
Who will be voted out tonight?

*cut to a darken camp*

As the tribe returns Chase and Brenda consol Jane.
Poor, poor Jane, we’re so sorry he was mean to you.
Jane responds with, “You just wait till he attacks you honey!

I’m stronger physically and mentally than that pile of dog poop. And I know my dog poop. I scrape that off my shoes after cleaning the dog runs. Mr. Poopy knows his days are numbered. My Momma would say, He is not worthy to talk about. I’m going to keep playing the game the way I know. Who is this Mr. Poopy hot shot who knows this game?

MartyMark and Sash go on a water run as the sun rises.
It is their time to strategize. I think everyone underestimates how dangerous Jane is. It is frustrating to play a game with stupid people. Sash grins.

Confessional for MartyMark:
If I do not come up with a plan, I am gone.
This is my show so I know I can come up with something.

The next morning MartyMark cooks breakfast for everyone.
Jane sees MartyMark talking with everyone and whispers under her breath then snarls.

Here are the plans guys!
Tell everyone we are voting out NaOnka
This will flush out the idol.
We blindside Jane,

*cut to challenge*

Come on in guys!
We have a new challenge called The Three Little Pigs Old Course. Think of huffing & puffing & blowing the house down. Jeff explains the rules of the reward challenge, which is an obstacle course. You will be randomly divided into two teams. Both teams will race their way through a set of obstacles to collect three keys. You will use those keys to open up three locks. First team to open the locks and raise their flag wins reward.

Wanna know what you are playing for?
A unique tour of the Nicaraguan canopy via zip line.
After that, a Survivor barbeque feast.
Beef, chicken, fresh veggies, bread, potato chips, and cold cola and beer.

Worth playing for?

Believe it or not, the random draw divided the teams into men versus women.
The men chose Chase as the extra man to sit out.
Chase, you have the choice of which team to back.
If the team you choose wins, then you go on reward with them.
Jeff shakes his head as Chase chooses the women’s team.

Alright, here we go. For Reward.

Survivors Ready!
Go!

Both teams break through the hay wall. Each key is located on a pole on a large wire spring. The teams hoist up Fabio and Jane to work the key around the spring. They make their way through a ground crawl. Next up is the wall of sticks that slow the women down a little. Fabio and Jane retrieve another key. Jane slows them down even more in the net crawl while the men work their way through and Fabio retrieves the last key. The men break through two brick walls and start working on the locks. The women hoist NaOnka to retrieve the final key. They run at the brick wall and bounce off. I guess we can say the women hit a brick wall. The men have two locks open. Jeff tries to encourage the women to continue but they run out of time. As they break through the first brick wall, the men open their final lock to raise the flag.

Jeff raises his arms!
Men win reward.

Whoops and hollers emit from the men.
Tears and evil stares from the women.

Women I got nothing for ya. Head back to camp. You too Chase.

Confessional for MartyMark:
I am very pleased with the challenges. Even after 21 seasons, they still come up with new and fun challenges. Thanks guys! Take that Jane. I will huff and puff and blow your team down. I do not understand why Chase would choose the women when it was clear that physical strength would win this reward.
It was hard watching Chase join with Jane.
It was like watching the movie Dumb and Dumber.
But that makes great TV.

All the men enjoy the zip-lines above the jungle canopy. Even Dan is grinning.
You know there are no zip-lines in Brooklyn. If there are, you’re a burglar.

Confessional for MartyMark:
Our people have picked some great rewards. I wonder if any experience the rewards. I know they work hard to turn out a good show. The crew is away from their families for quite a while. I will get my team working on sending all of the crew on at least one reward.
It is symbolic to be hooked to a zip-line, flying over the jungle, and enjoying a day off from the game. I believe the best opportunity about the reward is getting a chance to share my vision to rid ourselves of some dangerous players. Maybe I can convince them I am a good player of this game. I should be, I have handpicked the lot of them. Why do you think I chose Jimmy J. I wanted a better leader than me, which is hard to do, to insulate myself from early boots. It worked.

As MartyMark is grilling the chicken and beef, he shares his plan.
We say we are voting NaOnka. That should flush the idol. All of us with Brenda vote for Jane. Jane goes home. That isolates Chase and then you guys run it.
We are taking this to the end boys.

*clinking bottles*

Sash tells us: MartyMark’s plan is a good one but Brenda and I are the smartest minds out here. And in the end we are the ones who have the power to send whoever we want, home.

Meanwhile back at camp the camera and sound operators are busy.

Hollymom tells the girls that Chase showed character by picking us to win.
Invisible Kelly states: We all agree to vote MartyMark.
NaOnka becomes very animated. I want him gone bad. He was mean to poor Jane during Tribal. She couldn’t defend herself. Poor Jane. If it was me, I would have hit him back really hard. Really Really Hard!
I want him gone.

A sound grip heard a comment about making Brenda nervous. He told his lead and they had two cameras follow her.

Chase joins Brenda and NaOnka on the beach. Brenda is filing her nails with a rock and doesn’t look up. Chase is asking for assurance on the game plan.

The camera operators whisper to each other, I wish our boss was here to see this. Look at the looks she’s giving Nay. And the cowboy doesn’t even see it.

Brenda looks straight into the camera.
Chase is a worrywart and a little baby crying whaa, whaa, whaaa.

MartyMark and the invisible girl bring back tree mail and a block with painted ship symbols. Read it to us MartyMark.

This next challenge is a test of strength
That is your memory better be strong
Know what came first and what came last
Or be the next to say so long.

Jane sighs, “There is a big ol’ target on my back right now after Marty’s slanderous outburst the other night. So anybody needs to win except for Marty.”

The Libertad tribe arrives at the challenge and takes their places at their individual podiums. Jeff Probst takes back the individual immunity necklaces from Fabio and Jane.

There will be only one person winning immunity at this challenge. The rules are simple. You will be shown a serious of symbols and then use your cube to repeat them back to me in the correct order. Whoever gets it right moves onto the next round.

The last person standing wins immunity and a one in ten shot at the million-dollar prize.

In the first round, Jane, NaOnka, Dan, Holly, Kelly and Sash are knocked out. Fabio, Chase and Benry are knocked out early in the second round, leaving only Brenda and MartyMark.
Jeff states that MartyMark and Brenda have not been the best of friends during this game. MartyMark reacts with a “Not True”. “Just saying what I see.” He then winks at MartyMark. After a couple more symbols, MartyMark stalls and turns the cube several times. When he lifts his cube, Brenda grins wildly. Jeff ask if she is sure she has won and she shakes her head yes.

You are correct.
Brenda wins Individual Immunity. Jane is jumping as if she won.

Confessional for MartyMark:
Jeff is an excellent host. He sees all the tricks we use. When he saw me repeating the symbols to myself, he tried to break my concentration. He did. He owes me one for that. I understand why we pay him big money.

Back at camp Fabio and Benry discuss their options. “Let’s just lay low tonight Fabio.”
“Like ya, man!”
“I hate playing stupid so much but it’s the smartest thing to do. It’s real easy.”

MartyMark leaves Brenda and signs a thumbs-up sign to the camera.
“Everything is going my way.”

Brenda tells us that MartyMark has a good plan but he’s not in charge.
Sash and I are. Sash joins her and asks if MartyMark filled her in.
She shakes her head yes but ask; “What is your plan Sash?”
Whatever you want Brenda.

She smiles.

Sash tells her, I would rather keep Marty around. He’s a good cook and tells me everything. But I know the women want him gone. Brenda agrees with that.

I don’t like that Chase, Jane, and Holly are getting close and demanding things. Both sides think we are with them.

We are the swing votes tonight. Whichever way we vote is the side we choose.

The Survivors walk into Tribal Council, deposit their torches and take a seat.

We will bring in the first member of our jury. Alina voted out at last Tribal Council. Alina walks in, sits down and smiles at Brenda.

Jeff starts asking questions
Fabio did it worry you that the guys were bonding and strategizing and the women were back at camp and not very happy.
No. They were also strategizing and had Chase, which makes six of them. I was just stoked that we were eating. *Giggle*

Marty, last Tribal you made it clear that Jane was a threat. Did you feel that put a big target on your back? She is an incredible threat and that is a compliment to Jane.
*Jane shakes her head back and forth*
Brenda, how much time did you spend thinking about that? I can’t deny that she’s a threat. Take someone like NaOnka who’s a troublemaker or Jane who feeds us fish. Who would you take to the end? I think it’s a no-brainer. It depends on how you play the game.

NaOnka, at the last Tribal,
*NaOnka throws her hands up and huffs*
Why do we need to talk about this Jeff? We talked about it last time.
You stole food and it didn’t seem to hurt you.
It was a stupid thing I did and it will be talked about forever.
But I don’t want to talk about it anymore JEFF!

Jeff is in shock

Marty speaks up. It did not sit well. It seemed to be a trivial thing. Out here, there is no bigger sin than to take food and lie about it.

NaOnka goes off on MartyMark and throws personal attacks at him. Fabio is very uncomfortable, while most of the others find it quite entertaining. There are laughs, snickers and language that cannot be shown on a family show. NaOnka turns her attack on Fabio.

NaOnka!............ I’m ……I’m…….ah……..I’m speechless.
You go off like this tribal after tribal and you’re still sitting here tells me I will see you sitting before me in the final.

I don’t care why somebody would take me to the final. I am this. I have been this for 27 years. I am not putting on a show.

All right, it’s time to get to the vote. Brenda has Individual Immunity, you may not vote for her.

Dan, you’re up.
One by one the Survivors vote.
Brenda is the last one to vote

Jeff says; I’ll go tally the votes.

*Jeff leaves*
*Jeff reappears*

If anyone has the Hidden Immunity Idol and would like to play it, now would be the time to do so.

Everyone looks at NaOnka. She stares at Jeff.

Once the votes are read, the decision is final.
You will be asked to leave the Tribal Council area immediately.

I’ll read the votes.
Jeff pulls the votes out one by one.

First vote: Jane
MartyMark
Jane
Jane
Jane

*MartyMark looks at Sash*
That’s four votes for Jane, one vote for MartyMark
*Sash is grinning*

MartyMark
MartyMark

*Fabio looks worried*

MartyMark
We are tied. Four votes for Jane, Four vote for MartyMark

*MartyMark blinks*
Five votes MartyMark

*MartyMark looks worried*
*NaOnka looks at Jeff and smiles*

The 10th person voted out and second person of the Jury: MartyMark
That’s six, that’s enough.

*Jane winks at Alina*

Bring me your torch.

MartyMark walks up, places his torch in the slot.

Jeff lifts his snuffer and extinguishes the flame.

MartyMark! The Tribe has spoken!
It is time for you to go.

MartyMark turns to the Survivors and says;
Good Luck Guys!

MartyMark walks down the stairs into the darkness.
NaOnka claps while Fabio just shakes his head in sadness.

Jeff’s final advice:
From this point, it gets very interesting and very complicated.
Grab your torches and head back to camp.

MartyMark’s Final Confessional

I would not change a thing of how I played the game. There is always going to be risk. And it caught me tonight. It is always frustrating to lose.

I am sad I must keep up with the disguise while I am at Ponderosa. Now I have a chance to see the workings of that part of the game. I still cannot contact my family or my staff. I must wait until we leave the country like everyone else.

When I look at the Survivor family, I am happy with what I see. We have great people. We have great contestants. We have great drama. I could never write this stuff. And the challenges are not bad either. I heard that a Dream Teamer designed the Three Little Pigs challenge.
Thanks Undercover Boss for helping me to see my organization and game from the inside.

I loved your idea, Kircon! Very funny approach.

I guess we now have proof that the random draw was fixed to help MartyMark!

I think Burnett would play like Marty and say things like Marty. The only thing you wrote that I don't think Burnett would say is: "I could never write this stuff." Doesn't he every week when he splices and dices confessionals?!

Nicely done kircon, I enjoyed the undercover boss story which totally explains why Ponderosa isn't in tents........

The Sara Palin series of political adsshow is his? omg.

“I hate playing stupid so much but it’s the smartest thing to do. It’s real easy.”

I often wonder when "playing stupid" ends and being stupid begins.

Nicely done, kircon.
The plastic surgery was tough, but it was a good experience to see Survivor from the inside. More bug repellent and low wages for everyone!

Check out the "Be The Survivor" threads. More snarkiness than you can shake your stick at!

MartyMark...TOOOOOO Funny!

I missed this episode so glad to have this Summary.

Nice job and entertaining read.
