Wow, this place sure is bright. It's been awfully dark for the last long while. I came into this world at 10:32 a.m. this morning and I weigh 8 lb, 10 oz.

My name is Aidan Mackenzie and I'm told that the first name is an Anglicized version of the name Aodhán in Gaelic/Irish and the middle name is a family name that has carried on in almost every male on my paternal great-grandmother's side of family for 6 generations now.

Now... I'm awfully hungry and Daddy told me that Mommy's got an excellent source of food... Mmm! Yum!

See you all later...

Many thanks to IceCat!.................01/13/03

Congrats to you Pene, on making it though the good ol' labour process yet again. Can't wait to here how it went when you're up and around.

I love the name you have both choosen. You may actually see the name Aidan again in about a year or so when we decide on popping out another Canada Kid, as I've had the name Aidan in mind for some time now myself.

Happy thoughts for the whole family!

Welcome to the world, such as it is Pipsqueak. I believe you have just been awarded what is probably a permanent award of "youngest poster" at less than two hours. You have been awarded a wonderful, loving family. Those big sibs will teach you to get in trouble before you know it.

And your mom and dad are just the best. I know they have been waiting anxiously to meet you. They thought you were a little shy, but I think you were just waiting until you are big enough to sleep for a couple of hours before you get hungry.

You already have one of the biggest cyber-families around. You are well loved. Just don't hurry to grow up. It happens all too soon.

Pipi,

I'm so exited about you coming out here into the world to join us. You have a couple of incredible parents, and a whole bunch of people who care for you.

I looked up your name on the internet, and it means a Fiery Son of Kenneth in Gaelic. Kenneth means handsome as loosely translated in English.

My prayer for you as you start this new adventure is that you may live your life in such a way that it be full of fiery passion. May there be intensity in your actions, the brightness of wisdom surround you, and may your flame burn long. And may you acomplish this in such a way to bring honor to your beloved family.

God bless little one,

Welcome to the world, Aidan! I hope you were nice to your mommy when you made your grand entrance...took ya long enough!

First of all, you have a great birthday (the 13th). Don't let anyone tell you it's unlucky!

Now...I thought you might like a playmate. I know it's a little soon to be making friends, but friends are SO important - so I thought I'd get you started.

Now also remember that you don't have to limit yourself to skunks when it comes to playmates. There are some very nice hamsters, cats, squirrels, bears, dogs, and many other creatures here who would make great pals

So pleased to meet you! Now be a good boy and get some sleep so mommy can relax a little, k?

*muttering* cheeky lil bugger, hiding from us so you could post on the computer without our knowledge...

Thanks everyone for your best wishes -- it's been a wild ride and everything couldn't be more perfect with the way things turned out. The baby Aidan is perfectly healthy and has behaved quite well to date (other than keeping us awake a couple of hours during the night as he just couldn't get enough of this pretty amazing food source ) The other two kids have really taken to having a new baby brother, especially Zach who seems to have a remarkable skill at just knowing what to do with him for a boy of 6, sitting with the baby for a whole hour very patiently and touching him in all of the right places (ok maybe that did come out sounding wrong...).

It was a 19 1/2 hour labour, but only during the last 5 hours did the main contractions come. The baby was considerate enough to allow all the relatives and Pene to be able to sleep in a little bit before the call went out to the midwives and the terp at 8:00 a.m. They came and it quickly became apparent that the labour was rapidly progressing at a faster pace than anticipated. The actual pushing only took 8 minutes (as compared to over 20 for both of the first two children). The skill and preparedness of the midwives were obvious and we couldn't have asked for more from these two.

At 10:32 a.m., Aidan Mackenzie xxxxx (last name withheld) came out into the world and immediately yowled with a good set of lungs to announce his presence. Pene went through the whole ordeal with flying colours and was extremely happy with the way things went, plus the care of the midwives as she was able to take a well-deserved shower afterwards and spend the whole day with the baby -- in stark contrast to her experiences with the other two children in hospital, where the babies were immediately taken from her and put into the nursery room for a couple of hours. Spending the day recovering from birth in your own house and own bed really makes a difference on the psyche of the new mom.

As for me... I'm doing well and it's just hard to believe that this little package actually came from a tiny cell and from a human being's belly. I'm biased but I don't think I've seen a more charming baby in my life.

Oh yes, and I saved post #4000 just for you, Aidan! You're worth it.

No facial redness or other signs of a typical hospital birth (conventional delivery). The professionals that you had attending must really know how to facilitate a birth with minimum stress to their patients.

Makes you really wonder about the way hospitals do things.

"RE: That's One Very Cute Baby!"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 01-14-03 at 10:04 AM
Very true. Pene said she was really happy with the way things went at home and it was a much more positive experience for her than during the births of the first two.

Having said that, hospitals are apparently making a much more concerted effort to change their philosophies when it comes to the care of babies and birthing -- I don't know how widespread it is by now, but when we went on a tour of the hospital near ours as a Plan B, we were amazed to see how much the maternity ward had changed radically in just five years. Most of the birthing rooms have a whirlpool bath. Gone were the stirrups (although it's still an options) and hello, gymnastic bars and hello, electronic beds which can give you about 20 different options for the most comfortable position to give birth. Removable bed parts allow for crouching forward or to push against foot rests if so desired. Ceiling lights have been installed for greater brightness and are remote-controlled so they can be more precise where to shine the light without having to be held in someone's hand. Family waiting rooms have been added and decorated with sofas, high-backed easy chairs to sleep on, children's tables and chairs, TVs, ice and juice machines (free) and books to read.

Pene said that when her son was born 6 years ago, she was in a sterile hospital room with only stirrups to yank her legs way up with no features in the room, and a doctor that only visited ever so briefly every couple of hours or so.

Yeah, here in this little town they still make you lie down and try to push. Gravity, people! My mom thinks I'm crazy because I don't want to have any future babies here but the hospital is nuts. I had meningitis and they sent me home and told me that I needed to eat more to get rid of my headaches (they told me I was just having a low blood sugar reaction). Well, they still didn't pay attention when I said that I was eating 24 hours a day. When I went back a week later, I couldn't get my sugar level up past 20. My mom's glucose checker kept flashing this weird little symbol. (I had to scrounge around for the instructions and the only ones I could find were in Spanish. But, I understood it. I had originally thought the damn batteries were dying but it was ME that was too low. *laughs*) Finally, I just told them I wasn't leaving until they found out what was really wrong with me. I was there for about an hour before my brother showed up to kick some a$$ and then about 1/2 an hour later my parents showed up. So, the hospital had to do something.

"Hospitals"
Posted by AyaK on 01-14-03 at 12:00 PM
When our children were born (now 7 and 5.5 years ago, but in different hospitals on opposite coasts), the babies stayed in the room except when they were wheeled away for tests -- and then they came back when they were done (except for overnight, which is the only time they spent in a traditional "nursery" ... and only when my wife was asleep; the nurses brought the babies back for feeding).

Both rooms also had their own showers, and they had a "sitting area" with chairs and a couch, so you could show the baby off to visitors without having to do so from bed ... but neither had a whirlpool (oh well, can't have everything).

Even though I wouldn't want a home birth, I'm glad your experience went so well. Pippy looks great.

First, Aidan is stunning (if that makes sense)! Such a sweet face he has! And Pene, you look MAHvelous dahling!

As for the hospital experience, in Europe, hospitals are pretty much like a birthing center...very friendly, lots of amenities (like whirlpool tubs). The babies stay with you in your room 24-7 unless you ask otherwise (which of course, I did not!). The only time we didn't have my daughter in our room was the first 15 or so minutes after she was born, and my hubby was with her at that time. The rest of the stay, she was with us all of the time...no taking her away for tests even. They do test when they are born and then 5 days post-birth here. You're supposed to stay in teh hospital for at least 5 days here, but they're lenient with Americans since they know we're used to the 24 hour deal. I stayed for 2 days (I couldn't bear anymore with the extreme heat of August with no AC...yup, Belgium has NO AC anywhere!!!) then asked if I could go home and they okayed it since baby and I were both in good shape. I had a wonderful experience here! I wish things were so nice in the states! They really showed compassion and concern for you (even with the language barrier it was obvious) instead of treating you like a patient you were treated like a person and I LOVED that.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your sweet pics of Aidan with us!

Hope you all are holding up well!

OMH he is so cute! Congrats on your new arrival. Babies are so cute when they are all snuggled up in there blankets.

And Pene~~~19 hours you are the woman!!! Still smiling after that long. I hope you are able to get a little bit of rest.

Oh yeah, Pene ~ those two things on the floor are your feet. I know it is strange seeing them again, but you will get use to it.

Congratulations again! Aidan is beautiful! I'm glad the home birth experience went so very well. Thanks for posting the pics.

Look, Aidan........

I got you a pony! Every kid needs a pony. First you must learn to sit up, then crawl & walk & all that good stuff. Then your pony will be waiting for you out in the backyard.

Wow! Aidan is absolutely perfect!
And Pene, you are absolutely radiant.

You are both making me seriously consider a home birth when I get around to having kids.

You are so very lucky and I wish the best for your whole family.
Hey Pepe, lavish some attention on your wife and the big brother and sister for me would ya. Some hot chocolate would be nice - served in bed

What a wonderful picture. He is sooooo cute. I am very happy for you two.

The home birth sounded great. I especially liked the fact that she got to stay with the baby for the first day! What a special day you must have had.

I wish you only the best.

Pepe,

Congrats to all of the Le Pew Family. I'm so happy to hear that all are doing well. What a great picture of both baby and Mom. Oh, and about those nights of broken sleep - it'll all be worth it the first time he looks at you and smiles. Trust me.

Oh he's already cracked a smile... in between wails for more food! He really seems to be responding to our babytalks to him more and more. The eyes are fully open now and they're blue like his father's.

Two days old now, and he's doing very well and managing to keep poor Pene up most of the night with constant cravings for food. Pene told me that the two of them finally had a solid 2-hour sleep just now so that's a positive step.

I am happy, happy, happy for your family! Welcome to our wacky world Pippy! You've got the best start possible by choosing Pene and Pepe as your parents. You knew a good thing when you saw it didn't you?!

Take it easy these first few weeks darling and when you're ready pop down here to Texas and I'll give you your very first margarita and BBQ brisket. (you gotta cut those teeth on something right?)

Give your mommy a gentle hug from me and throw a lovely baby grin at your dad.

Welcome to the world Pippy! Now that you're here, I thought I'd impart a little wisdom, from one baldy to another...

Important tip #1: Mom and Dad need their sleep. Please plan accordingly.

Important tip #2: If you let Mom and Dad sleep, you can pretty much get away with murder. Not that I'm condoning that. Just saying.

Important tip #3: Teething's a bitch. Remember to ask Dad for the good stuff to ease the pain.

Important tip #4: Don't get addicted to the binky. There is no 12-step program.

Important tip #5: When all else fails, blame a sibling.

Hope that helps you out as you get acquanted with your new surroundings.

p.s. Canada's just cold. It's not going to get any better. Sorry about that.

Fester

I now have a good new excuse to get Mrs. Sherpa to have sex with me: "Honey, you know that really cool artist chick who painted that really cool painting we have hanging in the computer room? Yeah, well, if we have a baby, she'll make a point of coming around to congratulate us."

Not to hijack a wonderful thread from its original purpose, but it's wonderful to see you here, Itzy, no matter what the reason. You're greatly missed.

Number One:
Aidan welcome to OT...you have more Aunts and Uncles than most little guys! We promise to spoil you like your Papa spoils Survivor (with a keen eye!) Pene...you look amazing! I can't believe that is a POST preggers shot!
Number Two:
Itzi...I have heard nothing but the most flattering comments about you since I arrived during Mole2. I hope you will consider coming out and meeting some of the "newbies" who would like an opportunity to get to know you!
Regards,

Just wanted to grab #100 on this great thread... and I've got to agree with Supes that this is the BEST.EVER.THREAD in my mind -- it's the official debut of our baby and got OFG, Itzy and Supes posting here for the first time in ages. All three of them together, you couldn't ask for more.

Not only that... but it's heartwarming to see so many people take a few moments out of their busy lives to post their congratulations here. Pippy's lucky to have so many great cyber uncles and aunts.

Thank you, everyone, for helping make our occasion even more special.
