...who the hell is this "Tara" that President Bush keeps talking about? I mean, I do find Tara Lipinsky rather annoying, but I wouldn't call myself a victim of her. And as for attacks by her, I thought that was Tonya...maybe I've gotten them mixed up.

Unless he's talking about the plantation in "Gone with the Wind"? He's going to attack and defeat Tara? I didn't even know that was a real place, and even if it is, I really doubt that it's there anymore.

Can anyone help me understand?

I think that Mumbles was mixed up and he actually meant to say "Tora, Tora!" He obviously has the wrong war and the wrong side in mind, but I'm sure that it will all work out in the end.

I'm more concerned with that Tony Blair guy from England playing footsie with Laura Bush while Mumbles was trying to concentrate on the TelePrompter. She looked VERY, VERY pleased.

Yes, there's a real Tara: it's where the ancient high kings of Ireland had their ruling seat in Ireland's legendary golden age (and is an ancient burial mound). It's 21 miles northwest of Dublin.

In 1843, Daniel O' Connor organized "monster meetings" at which the Irish gathered to demand the repeal of the Act of Union, which put them solidly under British government. The largest "monster meeting" was held at the Hill of Tara, and the attendance numbered between 250,000 and a million (depending on whether you asked the British or the Irish). O'Connor was imprisoned two months later for this "seditious conspiracy."

hey IceCat... what did you think of Bush never mentioning Canada once while he was reading out ally after ally in talking about 'friends of the US' helping out. There's a little uproar going on in the papers and on TV up here about it.

Shhhhh... shakes' gonna stroll in here and say "I TOLD you so!"

As for Tara... Sky's Tora! Tora! Tora! is rather appropriate considering this speech is about the biggest attack on the USA since Pearl Harbour. And I think Bush may have been thinking of becoming a Toro after eyeing Tony Blair playing footsies with his wife...

Well... I don't really worry about it too much.

The President's speech was really designed to drum up support...

He already has the support of the NATO allies so he mentioned them (and, therefore, us) as a group. Prime Minister Blair was actually in the assembled audience last night so he had to mention Britain specifically out of respect to an honoured guest.

Remember the uproar that occured up here when the President said the following "the U.S. has no greater friend than Mexico", well he just used the same phrase for Britain last night. I think that the President will use that phrase quite often to refer to any friend of the United States when that nation's leader is visiting. It's a polite way to say that the person's country is up there on the list of nations that the US holds as allies.

Remember... he can use that phrase as many times as he wants with as many countries as he wants without it neccessarily being untrue. It is not a superlative.

Neighbors will help neighbors not to get their names in the paper or on TV. We allowed those planes into our skies and shared the risk because we were the only ones who could help. Our leaders acted immediately and there are rumours in the security community that there is evidence that some of the aircraft that were diverted to Canada from the U.S. contained hijackers.

President Bush has told our Prime Minister on the phone that he greatly appreciates the outstanding efforts of Canadians. That call occured on the day of the attacks. He said thank you to us in person through our Prime Minister on the day the tradgedy was unfolding. That is more than enough.

If, on Monday, the President privately gives our boss a handshake and says thanks, that's twice that it will be more than enough. We certainly have a great deal to be thankful for ourselves in terms of being the next door neighbor of the greatest power in the free world. We have not truly had to shoulder the cost of a real armed forces because no one would dare attack the country that shares the largest border with the U.S. We have access to the most affluent market in the entire world and 80% of our manufactured goods go straight to a market that has always been ready to buy them.

If the President doesn't choose to mention Canada because he knows we are already on side, so be it. The man has other things on his mind. Any Canadian newspaper or TV news show that tries to make a story out of this is a petty, sensationalistic, opportunistic, rag.

I think that was the NBA they were referring to as the Toronto Raptors and other basketball teams are about to start training camp in the next few days. NFL doesn't play games in Canada other than the once-every-few-years "World Bowl" preseason games which wasn't this year.

You're right on that one Pepe -- I'm a Chicagoan and one of those poor schlubs who continue to watch what used to be an NBA team known as the Bulls. Some of you may not be old enough to remember that team. They still call themselves the Bulls, but they now play on playgrounds and in school gyms in the metropolitan area. So I guess I try to forget the NBA. But the Bears did beat the Vikings! Yippeeeeee! In any case, the NBA still isn't dissing Canada, even if Shakes is. Canada is still considered a great friend and ally of the U.S., except for Quebec cause they don't like anyone.
