I'm feeling the Bern.

I figure, a place holder for 4 years is the only thing left to hope for.

OK, I'm not really feeling the Bern. But of the three, he's the least dangerous.

Hillary is a proven liar (yeah, I know, she's a politician, lying is not unexpected) and flatly incompetent and maybe a soon to be convicted criminal. I will not vote for her just to have a female President. I personally would like for the USA to have a female president, but there are plenty of other, more competent women around, and hopefully one of them will be able to fulfill that laudable goal.

And Donald (Hey, I'm on first name basis with these guys) is dangerously unpredictable, dangerous because (among a myriad of other considerations, which also include being a soon to be convict) he will have his hand on the nuclear button. What if Putin makes fun of his hair, or his predilection for Russian women? Boom! That's what.

His ego is a ticking time bomb. And he has nukes.

And as he openly states, he's a business man. And the focus of his entire life has been to figure out how to manage events so that his business interests come out on top. We should not expect him to reverse a lifetime of focus on himself. He cannot be relied upon as president to change now, and not put his business interests over the interests of the country. The odds are that he owns a wall building company.

I see old Bern, hopefully restrained by a Republican Congress and Senate, and even being the socialist that he is, as being the least likely to really screw the national pooch.

With that 8-of-a-kind of zeroes in the note's serial number, I'd be collecting it.

I have a large collection of world currencies with unique serial numbers with low-number, high-number and poker hands as the main criteria for collecting them. I have one bill with all 8's in it and another with all nines and a three. Most of them are Malaysian with a few US bills and Indonesian rupiah (all 5's in this case).

"RE: Well.."
Posted by kingfish on 06-06-16 at 02:19 PM
Any bill with an all zero's serial no. would have to be fake, right?

I bet Fooner's monkey would sell one at a discount.

"RE: Well.."
Posted by cahaya on 06-06-16 at 02:59 PM
Yeah, according to the Feds who print the money, serial numbers start with 00000001 and can end up at 99999999, usually less than that due to the number of bills printed at a given print site (denoted by the leading letter) and the year.

Google 'US currency serial numbers' and you'll also find sites that actually buy and sell the "fancy" serial number bills I posted about earlier. I could cash a few of them in, literally!

I know one general fairly well, but he's a Malaysian army brigadier general who is the husband of one of my lady's cousins. He and I used to sit down and chat about military history and the various treatises on the art of war. He was trained in the U.S. and knows his stuff, with a wry sense of humor.

It's going to be a classic case of voting for the lesser evil: Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. No question who's the lesser evil here.

I'll be moving to D.C. next month so I'll get a nice, closeup view of the whole brouhaha over the next few months, even if I can't vote.

That's been Bernie's line, why he should be the Democratic candidate.

Sad times.

A very long shot possibility is that there will be a GOP revolt at the convention (possible, not really very likely) or a third party candidate on the ballot getting elected in November (almost impossible - but hope should never die).

It'll just be me after Labour Day as there's no guarantee beyond the 10-month program and it didn't make sense to uproot the whole family and give up the house until there is something more permanent. I do have the option of going back to my current college job as I will be on secondment leave.

We go down to D.C. on July 12 after a few days in Philly and the kids will come later in August and stay for a few weeks before heading back for school.

I've spent quite a bit of time in D.C. over the past few years for projects and class recruitment trips (about 10 trips in total since 2008), so the area between the Capitol and Gallaudet is already starting to feel like a second home.

But I feel you.

Are the old time Pubs in this forum in hiding? Are there no Trump backers? AyaK has to be genuinely disgusted with his voting choices this fall, not to mention where the Pub party has gone to end up with a reality TV star nominee. I'd like to hear it from the elephant's mouth, "Trump is a moron."

There IS another choice!

Have you looked at all at Gary Johnson and Bill Weld, the Libertarians?

I wonder if Ayak likes either of them, with them being former Republicans and Weld being former US Attorney and Governor of Massachusetts.

But will they have any chance of winning the election? Fivethirtyeight.com currently predicts they'll get 7.4% of the popular vote, but no electoral college votes (with only a 3.7% chance of getting a single electoral college vote)

And they also have Hillary at 91.6% chance of winning the election with good old Donald continuing to shoot himself in the foot (which often ends up in his mouth).

"RE: Hiding?"

Our dear beloved President, the tweet twit he is, is living up to Reality TV World standards of presidency.

He ran his last public Cabinet meeting like an Apprentice boardroom with everyone kissing his azz.

The whole thing reminded me of a scene directly from the boardroom of "The Apprentice." A group of supplicants all desperately trying to hold on to their spots on the show by effusively praising Trump -- each one trying to take it a step further than the last. And Trump in the middle of it all, totally and completely pleased with himself. (Reminder: Around that Cabinet table are hugely accomplished generals, billionaires and political people with long track records of success.)

Of all the things that you could justifiably accuse Trump of, the most inaccurate, and something which is 180 degrees from his actual philosophy, is to call him a Communist.

Contrary to the Communist philosophy, he loves money. He loves having more money than anyone else. His whole life is centered on the private accumulation of power, which translates to owning the means of production, which translates in his world to the private ownership of wealth.

McCarthy (assume you are referring to Senator Joe from the '50s?) was an avowed capitalist as is Trump. Also, he was a Republican as is Trump. He was also an exploiter of prejudice and ignorance amongst the populace, as is Trump and good many other past and present politicians. I doubt very much that Trump would even be on his radar.

Obama, on the other hand, would conceivably be in his crosshairs for his Socialist health care plan. And Bernie, whoo boy, he would be an anathema to Joe Mc.

Actually though, McCarthy was just going after people, especially government appointees, that he accused of being Russian sympathizers, just calling them Communist spies without regard to what political or economical leanings they might have. He was an idiot who just flung around prejudicial terms without regard to their actual meanings. Like Communism.

Ol' Don is also trying to foil the special prosecutor who is looking into his and his namesake boy's and his family's dealings with the Russkies, undisclosed by them until the media got wind of it (as well as the intel agencies).

"RE: Trump is anything but a Communist"
Posted by kingfish on 07-26-17 at 10:39 AM
As an immediate death knell, you're probably right. I overspoke. Maybe more of a tipping point.

We'll see. Admittedly, while it's not hard to imagine a 51% vote in the house to impeach, it's hard to imagine a 2/3 majority in the Senate voting to convict. As it stands. The deck is loaded in his favor with Republican control of both houses.

But removal of Sessions, then having his replacement remove Mueller just might be the thing that disgusts enough Republican Senators to get that 2/3 majority.

Add to that the Tweet storm of indignation and the shit storm of boasts/threats and bloviation that would ensue just from the the impeachment, and there just might be enough disgusted Senators to get his conviction. As far as grounds to impeach/convict go, if he impedes the investigation by engineering the removal of Sessions and Mueller, well that might be enough.

Or, supposing the investigation is allowed to proceed, if irrefutable evidence is found of Russian collusion, that would make conviction a certainty.

Also, he was a Republican as is Trump.

I thought I'd fix that for you, but on second thought, your wording is probably correct. He may be Republican, but he's no conservative.

Also, I think the history of McCarthy and whether his actions and accusations were warranted or not are a little more complicated than Hollywood history would have us believe.

http://www.wnd.com/2000/02/4020/

http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/212053/setting-record-joe-mccarthy-straight-harvey-klehr

But if McCarthy was right about some of the large issues, he was wildly wrong on virtually all of the details. There is no indication that he had even a hint of the Venona decryptions, so he did not base his accusations on the information in them. Indeed, virtually none of the people that McCarthy claimed or alleged were Soviet agents turn up in Venona. He did identify a few small fry who we now know were spies but only a few. And there is little evidence that those he fingered were among the unidentified spies of Venona. Many of his claims were wildly inaccurate; his charges filled with errors of fact, misjudgments of organizations and innuendoes disguised as evidence. He failed to recognize or understand the differences among genuine liberals, fellow-traveling liberals, Communist dupes, Communists and spies — distinctions that were important to make. The new information from Russian and American archives does not vindicate McCarthy. He remains a demagogue, whose wild charges actually made the fight against Communist subversion more difficult. Like Gresham’s Law, McCarthy’s allegations marginalized the accurate claims. Because his facts were so often wrong, real spies were able to hide behind the cover of being one of his victims and even persuade well-meaning but naïve people that the whole anti-communist cause was based on inaccuracies and hysteria.

But if McCarthy was wrong on the details — and what is history but details — many historians today are both wrong on the details about McCarthyism and morally obtuse about the nature of communism. Far too many American historians believe that anti-communism or the search for Soviet spies was baseless paranoia. They recoil so strongly from McCarthy that they are unable to recognize that just because an objectionable politician cynically employed anti-communism does not mean that anti-communism was objectionable. The CPUSA was a haven for spies and Soviet subversion presented a genuine security threat to the United States. But, for Ellen Schrecker, former editor of Academe, journal of the American Association of University Professors, all varieties of anti-communism are species of McCarthyism. Opposition to communism, she has written,” tapped into something dark and nasty ion the human soul.” Blanche Wiesen Cook of CUNY lamented that “everything fine and creative in American thought has been splattered and smeared” by hostility to communism.

The wording was vague, I meant that McCarthy was Republican, as is Trump. So I appreciate your clearing that up.

Indeed, it was much more complicated than I stated, although I didn't rely on any Hollywood presented information. One also has to understand the history of and influence on McCarthy of Roy Cohn.

Cohn was part of the prosecution team that manufactured evidence against the Rosenberg's to convict them of a crime that they didn't commit. The evidence (Intercepts that were finally opened years later, probably due to FOI suits) is that they were probably guilty of minor crimes, but due to the fact that evidence of their real crimes was obtained due to those intelligence intercepts, they couldn't present it in court. Top secret info that they didn't want the Soviets to know they could decode. So Cohn persuaded Greenglass to lie on the stand, and based on those lies, the Rosenburgs were convicted of treason and executed. A penalty which, BTW, Cohn later bragged that he was responsible for convincing the judge to impose.

This is the same Cohn who was, BTW, an attorney for Donald Trump, top Mafia figures (including the boss of bosses, Genovese, and John Gotti), and Rupert Murdoch. Oh yes, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

He often received judicial repremands, and was finally disbarred. The tactics that Cohn used to get his way strongly resembles the tactics Trump uses today.

He died at 59, reportedly due to HIV complications. He was, like J. Edgar Hoover who actually recommended him to Joe McCarthy to be chief council, in the closet.

I for one do not miss him. Or McCarthy. And it seems that we maybe entering another Government crisis brought on by a few leaders more interested in their careers than the people they represent.

I should have put a winky face after my "correction". It wasn't meant to be a critique of your wording or your point, but rather a jab at any Branch Trumpidians who think he's conservative.

From what I've read, whether convicted on false evidence or not, the Rosenburgs were most definitely spies. And major Russian influence and infiltration into our government was very real. Saying they weren't guilty is part of the Hollywood history meant to condemn McCarthy.

I can honestly say I've never heard of Roy Cohn. When I googled Cohn, I saw a lot of articles from the past couple years talking about his connection to Trump. I wonder why I didn't see anything about it from major news outlets or Democrat campaign operatives. But I repeat myself. That's a real question, by the way, not a doubt of the validity of the connection you showed me. That was interesting.

we maybe entering another Government crisis brought on by a few leaders more interested in their careers than the people they represent In other words, nothing's changed.

According to Kremlin records revealed after the breakup of the Soviet Union, as well as information gleaned from interviews with the Russian spy handlers, Ethel did not participate in the spying (she didn't even have a Russian code name assigned to her) not even to the extent of typing up Greenglass or her husband's notes as was alleged by Greenglass. Julius on the other hand was active (as proven by the FBI investigations, the Russian intercepts, and Russian records reviewed after the USSR breakup) in setting up spy rings and recruiting spies.

What neither he nor his wife were guilty of was passing the vital secrets of the atom bomb to the Russians. That turned out to be a semi-separate Soviet penetration by spies, among them Klaus Fuchs, a physicist working on the Manhattan project. Greenglass was actually guilty of trying his damnest to obtain secrets to pass on to Julius, but as a low level machinist, he just didn't have that kind of access. But becasue they caught him and his wife trying to spy, they had leverage over him which Cohn used to get him to lie on the stand and testify against the Rosenbergs. So, Julius kinda got what he deserved, but Ethel was collateral damage caused mainly by Cohn. One has to suspect that she at least knew what was going on, though.

Greenglass escaped with a 15 year sentence.

So you are very right about Julius, he got what he deserved, albeit in a very crooked way by one of the most unethical lawyers in history, Roy Cohn, Donald Trump's lawyer.

I didn't get what I've learned from this article, but here is a Smithsonian site with a lot of the information.

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/spies-who-spilled-atomic-bomb-secrets-127922660/

BTW, the major criticism I would have with McCarthy is not that rooting out spies is wrong, but what is wrong is a politiciam making assertions without facts that ruin a large number of people's lives, for no other apparent reason than to boost one's own political career. He may have actually exposed a spy or two, but the massive immoral, unethical, and probably illegal if it were to be pursued, collateral damage he and cohn caused could have hardly been worth it.
