Yeah, I've posted this on Facebook, but people still seem to be having trouble recovering their user names. I'll delete part of my post for now to reduce the risk of non-members discovering that method.

I didn't have any trouble logging in as usual - every Sunday, my laptop goes through the whole maintenance routine (Glarys, Malwarebytes, CCleaner plus FileHippo update checks) and I was able to get back into here after that as all cookies/caches are cleaned out.

I followed Spot's recovery, but it wouldn't let me use my regular username. As bad as it would be to have to start over, it would be worse if we lost a) a bunch of peeps, or b) this place.

That's too bad. My guess is that our accounts were somehow marked as dormant/inactive, and the FIRST time you try to recover your username, it gets marked as active again, causing your succeeding tries to fail. From a software development perspective, it kind of makes sense.

My worry here is that if someone has gotten hold of other people's accounts and claimed it as their own.

Sorry. I meant that after the site was hacked, all of our accounts could have changed states to inactive, causing the first failed retrieval attempt to turn it active and causing any succeeding attempts to fail. I guess it's the software developer in me trying to make things more complicated than they should be.

Yep, user IDs are case sensitive so you could have thought you were signing in with the old name. Try again with the capital 'S'.

It won't let me log in capital S snidget and I can't seem to get it to associate that log in with any posible email to try to reset a password and even with capital S typed in if I use the new password it logs me in as small s.

The only password that works with Big S Snidget logs me on as small s snidget. The email that should be with S Sniget it says is an incorrect combination.

I don't know what to do. I think it is just gone and fighting with it is just making my migraine a lot worse. I'll try the other computer as it may have the password stored and see what it dose, first change the small s one to something else so it won't match.

The weird thing is the old log on that seems to be the Big S snidget when the other computer autofills is a little s, so probably no fixing it.

Hang in there. I'd bet that Webby could talk to the server hosts and go back to a restore point from a previous server backup.

We had issues like that way back in the ancient Jurassic days of this site where threads and posts were lost when Webby needed to reboot to a restore point of a few days earlier. I can even recall times in, oh, about 2004 when this site was shut down for a day or two to do some clean-up.

Pretty much, yeah. I do fondly remember hanging out at the bar during some of the Troubles, it was nice to have a safe haven. But that chat was also a place where troublemakers sometimes sowed their Russell seeds, that was a shame.

What's really bizarre is I got a couple of emails from "boards" @ RTVW courtesy of this "euromaiden" entity. They went to an old account, I'm certain I changed my addy in my profile here. Very odd. The only reason I check that old account is my Mom still sends me emails there no matter how many times I've told her to change it.

Anyway, wish I knew how to stop a war, but the only way I know to do that is not start it in the first place.

The save your log in hasn't worked for like two years, so I didn't save it that way.

But sometimes I don't close a browser so I was on before the hack so still on after the hack. I think that is why my old log on no longer is attached to any email I own. And if I try any of the tricks anyone else used to get on it says the account exists.

I'm concerned it is one of the ones being used to send spam the other RTVW have said they have gotten, so if there is no way to give me back control of the Big S snidget account please ban it if it can't be fixed.

What is also weird is every last cookie on any device that autofills what I logged in as used small s snidget. That is the log in it let me recreate, but the old account now has Big S snidget and I really don't remember every using the capital S. so I'm really wondering what happened.

The spam I got did not come from the Snidget account, or any user account actually, unless someone regged as "boards." There was no "to reply to this user." My guess would be it was from a broadcast email function that only Webby or an admin should be able to access. Anyway, it was odd.

According to IceCat, we ran into this problem last January as well. It apparently only happens to peeps who have checked the "Remain logged in" box in their profiles, and it seems to be a cookie issue.

When I have more information, I'll let you know.

I haven't had the button clicked on since it died a long time ago. For the longest time if that is checked you couldn't log in at all.

I think I've cleared the cookies. I'll do it again, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

My biggest problem is it says the Old name and EVERY email address I've ever had, including the one I'm certain I signed up with is not associated in anyway with the big S snidget name.

My only sin is apparently I don't always close the browser and that is what let me post after the hack. Maybe posting from that is what screwed it up.

When I try to email Snidget it says the user doesn't exist, but it will let me send a PM to that account. When I try the register as Snidget trick, it says the account exists.

I've played all the games to set the new accounts to other emails.

I've tried every last possible email address I've ever used with the Big S snidget and it is not linked to ANY of them.

If there is a way for the mods to just ban that user so whatever email they now have it linked to can't be used I would appreciate it. Unless they can get in and reset it back to one of mine or figure out what the frick email address it thinks it is linked to.

Every trick I try to restart it says it already exists. So I'm doomed.

This is for Estee, Snidget, and anyone in a similar predicament. And for whom the hack can't be corrected soon enough, although I'm sure everything possible is being done to fix this.

If you are locked out of this forum, and know what your screen ID was, and still have the Email address you originally used to register oh so long ago, you can recover. At least this worked for me and (I believe) adrichcharlie.

Go to the RTVW login page.

Click the Register a New Account option

Register using your old ID screen name (keep letter case as it was originally) and your old Email address.

The system will send to the address that you just gave them a new Password. You can use it to log in with your old familiar screen name, you will have your post odometer, and access to your emails.

And you're good to go. All that has changed is that you have to use the new PW.

If you previously re-registered using a different Screen ID (such as the "Agman2" that Agman used) and your old address, the trick will be to disassociate that new name with that old address.

I suggest (I haven't had to test this, so there may be a snag that I haven't anticipated) signing in with your new screen ID, going to your new account and changing your Email address to a temporory address, maybe a yahoo account or an address from the site that Spot suggested), then sign out.

Then you could use the above method to reregister using your original Screen name and email address, and it should work since that address is no longer associated with your newer Screen ID.

As Spot says, it seems that the hacker deactivated a lot of accounts (others were apparently unaffected), and when you sign in with a new ID and your normal Email address, the system thinks you are a new poster.

I'm guessing that the hacker got in as a system administrator, started inactivating posters one by one (possibly in alphabetic order), and just got tired of doing that after a while and quit. The list of RTVW posters is really really long. This could explain why the unaffected accounts are farther down the alpha list, like Mooney, Puffy and Pepe.

Does not explain Snidget. Obviously, for her, it was personal.

An observation: By and large, it appears to have mostly affected those who posted recently in OT (and not other forums). Folks who haven't posted here recently (until this thresd!) didn't seem to be affected.

No, this is incorrect. See post #122 ff. From what I've read in this thresd, most people affected do not remain logged in and log out after posting.

My suggestion is that specific screen names (possibly within specific thresds) were targeted, namely some currently active posters in recent thresds in OT, but not active posters in other forums nor recently inactive posters in OT.

One answer is: Until you log out.

Another answer: As long as you are on the internet and some time thereafter until either the cookie expires or you delete the cookie.

I was unaffected. I hadn't logged in in approximately a month. I hadn't actively logged out the previous time I was logged in.

Whether there was or wasn't targeting is something I don't believe can be concluded. Most of the other forums are relatively inactive at this time because we are between seasons on many programs. Yet Corvis was affected by the hack. Corvis is not a big habituee of OT. He does pay some attention to Survivor Spoilers though he is not interested in source spoils. Early cast spoiling has some minor pre-season activity occuring in Survivor Spoilers.

Just so it's on the record.

I fall into the exception rule.
Because of the last "Red Flaggy Day" disaster, I was forcebly made to "Log-Out" after each visit to RTVW.
The night/morning of the "Ukranian Disaster", I was "Logging-In" as usual (noticing a change in the title/tab name) and when I went to the log-in page, I clicked on my little "key". The one that remembers passwords for me. The page changed only slightly to inform me that I had the wrong password or username and I should try again.
I clicked the key one more time and, of course, the same thing happened. (This is clinical, you know.)
The third attempt I actually typed in all of the info; username and password (Key Note: remembering my "old password" (from before "RFD") and current username.)

Blamo.
I mean, BLAMMO!!!
I was in.
But nary anyone else was.

I used the Spot method. Although I haven't been checkin the "stay logged in" box for months I do notice that after I changed my password it still has my old one (on the log in box). I have to retype the new password on the sign in.

Of no interest to anyone but me however there you go...

Once many moons ago, when I had a proper job, I was working on a project to ensure that tracking of imported materials adhered to Russian Customs regulations.

At the time the UK and Russia were on the outs because "someone" poisoned Alexander Litvinenko in London, the only country we could meet up in was the Ukraine as none of us needed visas to get into the country.

I fixed up a meeting and we agreed that we needed at most a day, so I booked flights and hotels to allow me a mornings sightseeing the day after the meeting. Bloody Russians decided that if I had the time I could sit in the office with them that morning to answer any questions they had come up with overnight... They came up with no questions.

Still at least I have eaten Chicken Kiev in Kyev.

It ain't over folks!

So seeing all the sights of Kyev that are visible from a taxi on the route between the office I was working in (a few domes) I end up at the airport. Now for some reason I wasn't flying direct but via Vienna.

My Bother likes vodka, so at the airport they had a selection box of 5 100ml bottles of different flavoured vodkas which seemed ideal as a gift for him, in fact as the duty free allowance is 1l I purchased two packs one for Christmas and one for his birthday. They wrapped it in a "don't mess with me" plastic bag and off I went.

Off the plane at Vienna, random wandering around the airport, gate announced, and off to the security check, now the Ukraine isn't in the EU so apparently the "don't mess with me" plastic bag carries no weight within the EU. and of course there are limits on the amount of liquid that one can transport.

So in my discussions with the Austrian customs lady I emphasised that it was only bottles over 150ml that were banned whilst not mentioning the limited amount of liquid allowable. Eventually bowled over by my politeness she let me keep all ten bottles.

Damnitall I really miss travelling for work.

I really don't understand how any of this stops war in the Ukraine.

*sigh* I was just now able to get back in: not being on Facebook, I had no access to any tricks and when I tried to register anew using my other email address -- a gmail account -- I was told No Generics Allowed. I was a day away from mailing a letter.

Sorry if I made anyone worry. Truly. It wasn't my intent. I just kept waiting for an intervention which never arrived.

I think we just definitively proved that for this and all future hacks, we are on our own -- and since we are now Verified Defenseless, more hacks can be expected.

And a bit of advice, get your foot into the FB SBOT party. Spot had a recovery method out that seemed to work via that network almost immediately. I think you can do that without giving away anonymity, and it will provide you a backdoor plan B for hacker caused outages. FB will pester you for all kinds of personal info, but ignoring them has worked for me. Also, be prepared for daily implorings for participation in weird sounding games. Here email filtering works best.

You should know that emailing you thru RTVW resulted in a "We Don't know that person" response while you were out. Apparently you were officially dead. I suspected that you were either caught up in bridge traffic, buried in a snow storm, out on a mission of revenge (pick a topic), or just out of the communication loop. Obviously PM's were of no avail either.

Nice that you managed to find your way back, but you haven't missed much.
