Earthquake in the Philippines.
Haven't checked yet to see exactly where it was in relation to our Spott.

Prayers for all there.

Manila is near the top of the map, earthquake center near the bottom.

Next door to SpecOps I can send a freaking 48" x 48" x 48"crate to him for $40. If he needs stuff, I'll pay postage and more.
Of course, I'd hope he and his family would be the ones to get it.

Thanks for thinking of us, JBug. We personally weren't affected by the earthquake in the slightest, but the damage done to the country has been enormous. I haven't been here or on Facebook in quite a while, but it's just mostly because of work commitments. I do appreciate being remembered though.

"Super Typhoon Haiyan"

Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of strongest storms ever, heads for central Philippines.

With sustained winds of 305 kph (190 mph) and gusts as strong as 370 kph (230 mph), Super Typhoon Haiyan was churning across the Western Pacific toward the central Philippines as one of the most intense tropical cyclones ever recorded.

Although it's been downgraded from a super typhoon, experts say that Haiyan is the strongest typhoon of the year and possibly the most powerful to ever hit land.

.. winds approaching 200 mph .. mudslides, flash flooding and a storm surge with waves of up to 30 feet ..

with the country’s lines of communication cut, officials feared the death toll could rise dramatically. .. Meteorologists had expected Haiyan to reduce in power as it approached the coast but it hit the Pacific islands at its peak power.

It could be awhile before we hear from Spot. Stay safe.

Reed Timmer: Meteorologist and Extreme Storm Chaser

Unbelievable 375 meter resolution satellite image of Super Typhoon Haiyan taken just prior to landfall in the Philippines yesterday.. This is one of the most perfectly organized tropical cyclones I have ever seen! You can clearly see the "stadium effect," along with tight spiraling all the way into the eyewall. People in central/northern Vietnam need to be on alert as Haiyan will still be a powerful storm when it impacts the region in the next few days!! — with Francesco Giuseppe Turtamo.

I think I just had a flashback from dropping that "Yellow Sunshine" back with Timothy in 1969.

Or was "Yellow Sunshine" that stupid mule that kicked me in Argentina? I can't recall!

Manila hasn't taken the full brunt of the storm, so we're in good condition, especially compared to our fellow Filipinos who live down south. Part of our roof has been blown off, and one of our windows was destroyed after getting hit by debris, but otherwise, we suffered no major damage, and my family and I are completely safe.

"RE: Updates"
Posted by Snidget on 11-09-13 at 08:55 AM
Glad you and your family are OK. That must have been a monster storm for you to get that much debris damage that far away from where landfall was.

Many prayers to your country and may your rebuilding go easily and well.

Posted by SpotTheDifference on 11-09-13 at 03:13 PM
I've never experienced winds that strong before, and that's saying a lot considering we get an average of around 20 storms per year. The only consolation is that it came very early in the morning (around 3 or 4) and by the time when we can actually call someone to repair the damage, the storm had already passed.

Good to know you and your loved ones are safe.

The city of Tacloban seems to been the hardest hit and there are estimates of 10,000 people who may have perished there and in surrounding areas. My thoughts go out to those and their families who suffered.

I lived in Malaysia for 20 years, but it's too close to the equator to see typhoons, only monsoons (which can wreak havoc of its own nonetheless).

At the rate things are going, I think Survivor is going to kill itself before they even consider us hosting them again.

Oh and {darker}. If we were to believe some less... sensitive people on the Internet, the universe is actually suggesting that the Philippines needs to stop existing.

Hah! That's what they say about California, and we are still here!

Uh Oh! Why'd those palm trees just fall into that big crack opening up?
eeh..must be gophers..

Time to move to the Mojave Seaside Villas!
But I'm not living near the Spaceport. No no no. Bet it's noisier than LAX.
I wonder if I can get one of those towers in the "Holland 2500 AD" development, like on the sign?

Oh, that's just Pat Robertson working under his fifty million Internet aliases. Ignore him. At least 46% of Americans do.

Try not to think about that remainder.

I am patiently waiting for someone to tell me what the world is being punished for this time, mostly so I can punch that person in the face.

Sounds like a difficult life for her. An alligator, so to speak. A survivor also, but a predator.

Humans taste good to other humans, if the prey has enough money, and you can sideslip the system on the dark side.

LAST EDITED ON 11-10-13 AT 11:06 AM (EST)

With all the devastation, particularly with the storm hitting the region still recovering from the earthquake, food, water, temporary shelters, medical assistance and so on are needed, relief organizations are mobilizing. Whatever the death toll from the storm itself, the aftermath could make it much worse.

It is hard to imagine such destruction.
After seeing the pictures and news, how people need basics of food & water & clothing, I got to thinking about people who need daily medications and no longer have that.
I think of someone who might have Parkinson's like my DH; how they would manage if they did not have the medications they must have every few hours.

I remember seeing similar images of the New York/New Jersey area after the storm there last year. These are equally devastating.

In the second picture, there are three ships up on land where houses used to be.

Glad your damage was relatively minor, Spott.
