As apparently any bit of snark, dead pan or otherwise, farce, or satire is now taken to be absolute truth and the proof is everyone hangs up on you when you ask about it and any denial just proves the rumor!

It's more common than you think.

GI Bill benefits for Guantanamo Bay prisoners?

Mitch McConnell (R-KY) got suckered too.

“I am writing on behalf of a constituent who has contacted me regarding Guantanamo Bay prisoners receiving Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits,” McConnell wrote. “I would appreciate your review and response to my constituent’s concerns.”

And here I would think Ol' Mitch would be good with crushing the souls of our enemies.

Or is it just not OK to do that with bureaucracy.

The incompetence shown by the blogger who spread the story is rivaled only by the incompetence of Hagel himself.

Here's a quick piece from Slate on how easy the story was to disprove, had someone at Breitbart chosen to do even a little bit of work before spewing it into the blogosphere.

Just in case you think that conservatives are the only ones who pull this "is it true? I don't know" crap, here's an example of the same thing from a liberal directed at Fox News, which he has now updated to acknowledge that it too was a fake:

No one is immune.
