Yes, I know.
William Feurer was the first guy to make chocks and pitons in the USA.
Before that, Stubai and Bonatti were great innovators in climbing rock faces.
Guys used to use machine nuts strung with military grade cotton or nylon webbing wedged in a crack for a safety point, and loop their rope through it as they led a difficult pitch. A "pitch" being a rope length.

This was also before "Carabiners".

I can tell you lots about climbing. The real guys are heroic.

Gaston Rebuffat and Kurt Diemburger are my favorites.

Old Gaston in his original French. It's a sexy language.
I met that crazy Diemberger in an elevator on the way to a lecture he was giving at a Hilton Hotel. I was an antendee. Strong handshake, short powerful guy with big lungs. Pleasant.

Nice job Crabman. You let JunieBug get away from you, but your pace is still pretty good. Of course your count was inflated by all those one word posts you used to be known for, but what the heck, a post is a post, and I bet you never thought you'd get this old.

You have definitely exceeded the average life expectancy here at RTVW, in spite of all the slings and arrows that one has to absorb around there, so, again, good job. See you at 20K, I’m sure you will get there before I do.
