I know. First sucker to mention it has to be in charge. So it goes and since none of you wanted to risk saying it before I did, so it is. I'm running this thing and y'all can just suffer through it. One Dictatorship, One Vote.

So with that in mind, here are the rules.

1. Anyone interested in participating must both sign up in this thread and PM me either their mailing address or that of a willing mail drop host by midnight on Wednesday, November 21st. You must also indicate whether or not you're willing to ship internationally.

1a. When posting in this thread, list some things (categories) you might like to receive and others you really wouldn't. Complete allergy information might really help here. Just to keep your Secret Santa from, you know, killing you.

2. On Thanksgiving morning, I will send out all Secret Santa assignments. There may or may not be some irony involved. Or a lot of irony involved. Actually, you're the U.S. Open field and I'm putting the groups together. Fear.

3. Attempts to enforce spending limits typically don't work out. $25 is traditional, but the tradition mostly seems to be finding ways to violate it.

4. You must mail your package no later than Monday, December 10th. Those sending out-of-country may want to do so a little earlier, but this should be enough travel time for most.

4a. When you send your box, you must PM me and let me know it's been shipped. (Forwarding any tracking information would be helpful.) I will be in charge of pestering the late senders. Snowstorms will be understood.

5. Once the packages start to arrive, we'll kick in a receipt, guess and (eventual) reveal thread.

6. There is always someone who gets their box delayed, returned, lost, stolen, mutilated, or sent to Siberia. Apply now to be the lucky one!

And that's it.

Except for the fact that I'll have most of your addresses.

Heh...

Mail drops? Highly encouraged.

First... thanks for taking up this huge task, Estee. And I hope you got your old whip back from Woe that I gifted her last year.

Likes
- Anything that is representative of your home area/state (I'm a major travel buff and love unique stuff from different areas)
- Starbucks coffee mug with the city name on it if you're close to a major city (I collect mugs from different places, have about 8 Starbucks & 8 regular mugs from other cities)
- Coffee-related stuff
- Mental puzzles, crosswords, kakuro/cross sums
- Books
- Golf/football/baseball
- Fun munchies (chocolates, any others, but not jelly-ish or licorice-ish), especially if it's something unique to your area

Dislikes
- Heavily scented stuff as my nose doesn't react well to strong scents from things like candles, potpourri, cologne or perfume ('subtle' works, though)
- Anything to do with the Yankees
- Christmas ornaments
- Anything related to music

Damn! And I had the perfect gift in mind if I drew your name. Thanks for doing this -- major points off pergatory for you (if either of us believed in such a thing).

ETA
Likes Dark chocolate (though milk chocolate does not offend me), beer (shipping across the border might be a problem), Phil Keoghan,
Would love, Love, LOVE an ornament or anything kitschy from your area. There is no possible way it can be too tacky-- I've been told my Christmas tree has 'personality', logic puzzle/brain teasers, Geeky/Nerd stuff. Books about your area.
Locally made stuff that says something about you or your area would be supercool.
Teas, or coffee (even though my caffiene poison of choice is diet Coke, I am trying to go healhtier)

Dislikes
Smelly soaps, lotions candles (delicate skin and nasal passages here. I'm ok with citrus or vanilla)
Nuts/peanuts (mild allergy. I won't go into anaphylatic shock -- if the package says processed in a facility that also processes nuts that is OK) Golf, Rod Stewart, Chicken soup for the soul books, etc. All four give me violent stomach cramps.

I'll play. I was hoping someone would start Secret Santa because I didn't want to own it.

All I usually drink is water or milk, but sending a case of .5 liter bottles of water costs too much in postage. Christmas colors don't match my Hanukah decor. Other than that, I appreciate any gift.

So are you in, Wow? Just wondering.

I am in! I like food of any kind, except for coffee, tea, liquor, or wine. I love cookbooks, and lush bath products of any kind. An Amazon gift card would be nice to buy Kindle books or anything else I see that I want.

I also love heart of the ocean necklaces like this one, any color will do, and they are easy to find on Ebay:

So, thanks Estee! You've taken on quite a task.

I absolutely LVOE that necklace myself, in purple, of course and I thank you for mine

I am undecided at the moment. Will let you know sometime after my meeting with the president (of my company, at his request) tomorrow, but definitely before the deadline. Oddly, I dreamt last night that he couldn't bring himself to say "you're fired" but by the look on his face and the line of questioning I asked him if he was firing me. Again, he said nothing, but the look said yes and I was not upset about it at all. I am just so ZEN

I am learning to allow. Allow good to come to me, allow God to be in control (as if He wasn't already) amd allowing life to unfold as it does.

Tim Hortons in England?? Jolly good!

Question for you, Starshine, because I believe you are a tea drinker. Typically here when one buys tea at a cafe (Starbucks, Second Cup, etc) they give you a cup of boiling water and a tea bag. The cup is too hot to hold (even with napkins or those sleeves), the tea is too hot to drink for a long time, and the tea still needs to steep! Tim Hortons is the only place I know that serves steeped tea. Basically a carafe of tea that has already steeped and kept at a drinkable temperature. I know of a few people (myself included) who greatly prefer Tim's tea, and I see this as a huge marketing advantage for them.
Do cafes in London sell pre-steeped tea?

"RE: RTVW Secret Santa: 2012 launch. (Signup deadline 11/21)"
Posted by Starshine on 11-09-12 at 02:35 PM
Well, the problem with tea is that it needs to be made with boiling water, the problem I have always had outside the UK is that one is given a jug of hot water and a selection of tea bags, unfortunately that is never going to make a good cup of tea.

Cafes in London (pronounced Kaff) will ... actually I have always assumed that they make it fresh, a mug of tea with milk in it just turns up on the table, now you make me think it could well be from a tea urn.

Starbucks, Nero, Costa all go the very hot water on the tea bag of your choice route.

First off, *whack to Max*

Funny about the Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG) toilet (and great name suggestion, though most Leaf fans would be more likely to name it "Harold" or "Ballard".

MLG was a grand old building. One of those old-style hockey arenas. I can't say that I have been to many of those, and didn't go to that one very often either (dad wasn't the sort of get tickets for games). But I did go a couple of times, and the washroom was probably the greatest memory of that. I have spoken to other guys around my age and they have the same memory.

That memory? The trough. The men's washroom had a few stall, but in lieu of individual urinals for doing #1 the washroom just had this long trough. Guys would line up on both sides shoulder to shoulder and pee into the trough. Being a kid in such a place was awful and unbelievabe and something I will never forget.

Not an experience I get to have in this lifetime, thankfully. I understand American male sports fans can still get their own trauma, though -- although some travel still might be involved.

Wrigley Field has proven resistant to more than one form of upgrade. Fenway reportedly had them until this past season.

You went a couple of times, huh?

If one person gets all the packages while everyone else just stares at their mailbox for six weeks, it is totally my fault.

Got it, thanks... and this should be a fun assignment! I can already think of a few things to get for this person.

And? I will look forward to a nice gift from each and every one of you here as I know that Estee will just have all gifts for fooner readdressed my way.

Shortest ever, for a place far, far away.. Who would have thought?

No, Pepe. Sweden is not for you.

And for whomever got me I would be oh so grateful for anything BUT chocolate (just don'tcare for it). My list would be much like Sharnina's except for fruitcake. I do love postcards and magnets alot. And cookbooks.

And I don't believe for a second that you sent al the addresses to one person Estee, I'm sure you did quite well!

Your sender, taking a cue from your copy of Sharnina's list, would like to ask after earrings. Namely, pierced or clip-on.

For the record: I am not going to spend most of the next three weeks playing s/he said relay station.

Pierced.

I guess I just thought Sharnina meant pirced as well and that most women had their ears pierced. My bad. Her list was just closest to things I enjoy most.

Got mine -- and a wonderful choice if I must say so myself.

Thanks!

Just remember that Estee has a secret Heart of Gold. Word-on-the-street has it that you can sign up by December 26th.
As long as it doesn't interfere with Kwanzaa.

It's not as if y'all are heavily into shipping.

I threw my box in the ocean. Do you know how much shipping costs?

Syren
I figure it'll wash up onshore at the right time, then some Good Samaritan will strap it on to a tortise or something. I taped it up pretty good.

Yes, I just asked Snidget, because those crazy byffer calculations just didn't add up.
That Snidget is an oceanographical genius.

I'm sure English beaches are filled with friendly tortises. Better check your porch right away for one with a wet box.

I got a rubber ducky in the mail with a thank you note from a name I don't recognize. It wasn't gift-wrapped. I found the name who sent it on Ebay (they sell rubber duckies). I actually like it, but I"m not sure if this is a SS, or a gift cuz I may have gotten something else from them on Amazon.
Clues anyone?

ETA: I've emailed the owner of the shop to find out the score as well.

I've got a good friend that lives in Jackson Hole. Haven't seen her in a few years, but to tell the truth my mind was more February = Summer than it was for skiing. I'd probably break my leg nowadays, and Grit would laugh at me.

The Gorn home planet is probably nice. Dry and rocky, but no good vintages.

Good time to drop me a PM if you haven't already. Or drop by the post office. Or, if you've completely forgotten about the whole thing, drop and give me twenty.

There is now one present under the tree and it's for me, Me, ME! (I might hide it until Christmas, because one year Sam helped by opening the SS presents and scattered them around the house. It was the best scavenger hunt ever because I had no idea what I was looking for.)

Thank you Secret Santa! I'll probably give into temptation and open it this weekend.

ETA the card says 'from all of us at OT' Awwww! You shouldn't have

By the Gods, Estee must have put the fear into someone! It's from "Vermont". I think.
This is obviously a clue!

Kaboom!

STUFF!

My Secret Santa crunched up newspaper as packing material, but I bet they left a clue written ON the crunched up paper. I'm examining everything with a magnyfying glass. Why? Well, duh! This was obviously trans-shipped, because nobody lives in "Vermont". Is that really a place? Does Bilbo Baggins have his hobbit-hole in this make-believe land?

Uh Oh! This isn't The Abbot of Vermont?
