"Olympic preparation - hotties edition"

Can I be shallow? Still??

The Olympics are just weeks away, and it it time to get ready. Many of the world's greatest athletes - and greatest bodies - will be converging on London to disrupt Starshine's commute, so the least we can do is help him by pointing out the athletes he should keep an eye out for.

Please post pictures, but remember the PG13 guidelines - most of us have seen pictures of some of these athletes posing nekkid to raise money for their training. Just post links to those sites

"Emily Batty - Canada - Mountain Biking"
Posted by byoffer on 07-11-12 at 04:56 PM
First up - Emily Batty of Canada.

23 yr old mountain biker. Wears pearls when she competes, and then gets muddy. Won a medal in a recent world cup event, so is a serious athlete.

And has serious gold medal looks:
In competition:

And relaxing:

Remind me to dust off my bike.

Not a hottie post, anybody that posts pictures of girl women gymnasts in a hottie thread is a pervert.

Seriously, they as a group are very cute little bundles of muscle. And they do the most amazing routines.

And frequently suffer the kind of damage to their bodies which normally require a decade of professional football, only they get to start hurting themselves at the age of four with absolutely no one thinking to start a protest on their behalf. I can admire the performances, but I despise the sport and those who promote it.

And have you seen the faces of all those gymnasts? Not a single one of them appears to be enjoying the challenge of going up against other world-class athletes (I won't count Mary Lou Retton here - she's not human).

Starshine won't be interested but if he should happen to meet up with USA Gymnast Jake Dalton, he has my permission to give him my name and home address. What do you say Starshine, be my wingman?

"RE: Olympic preparation - hotties edition"

Believe me, I am the worst wingman ever, but why not give it a bash!

FWIW

The great British gymnastic hope is Daniel Keatings, but I would swap you for Samantha Achterberg

And there's something about the modern pentathlon...

"RE: Olympic preparation - hotties edition"
Posted by byoffer on 07-12-12 at 02:48 PM
Have you heard that they have changed - dare I say modernized? - the modern pentathlon? Apparently the shooting competition has replaced the air pistol with a laser gun, and then have changed the distance run to be more like a biathlon (combination of running and shooting).

Laser pistols? Bring on the Wii Olympics!!

"RE: Olympic preparation - hotties edition"
Posted by Starshine on 07-12-12 at 02:57 PM
Interesting, so long as they still send them out according to the points scored, so that the person who crosses the line first has won I don't mind too much.

Although if there was an issue with the air pistols I would have thought they would have switched to target pistols, lasers seem like cheating somehow.

for winning the hosting duties! So glad NYC isn't the location- we already have a very messed up transit system without assistance from a major event like this

Yet in some ways I am extremely gellus.

Ditto, I'm glad that Toronto lost the hosting duties to Atlanta - it's chaotic enough on the ancient Gardiner Expressway as is, heaven help us if the entire area was taken over for the Olympics.

I sympathize with you guys, but it will be a once in a life time deal for Starshine to be able to travel to the Olympics by just hopping on a bus or the subway.

I think I could put up with it for a couple of weeks.

Speaking of hot, sounds like some of Spain's athletes are wishing that their national team Olympic uniforms are hot enough to burn up.

Sort of reminds me of those fancy Norwegian team curling pants, but those were fugly on purpose.

Yikes, apparently the London weather could lead to un-hotness for beach volleyballers.

Could this lead to a whole new line of beach volleyball long johns designed by Victoria's Secret?

"RE: Olympic preparation - hotties edition"
Posted by Starshine on 07-23-12 at 04:29 PM
I was up in the City today, and it was dashed hot, 90 at least. The Met Office are forecasting at least 80 degrees for the rest of the week, so things may be OK.

I seem to remember that one of Bill Brysons proudest possessions was the front page of a British newspaper with the headline "Britain swelters in the 70's"

Were they so concerned about the beach volleyball longjohns affecting the crowd that they brought in cheerleaders?

Does beach volleyball need cheerleaders?

Although I know no-one else will

As we all know this is the 3rd time London will host the games the first city to do so (well apart from Olympia obviously) although this is the first time the games have been awarded to us. In 1908 the games were held in London because Mount Vesuvius erupted and Italy were unable to hold the games as planned, and in 1948 London scrabbled a games together in the debris of the second world war.

This article in on the differences between the Games that London has held

London seems to be really up for it, and slightly exasperated as well.

What you need is a pole vaulter, sir...

Jillian Schwartz has already competed at the Olympics albeit for a different country. She represented USA in pole vault at the 2004 Olympics. Fast forward four years and she missed qualifying for the Beijing Games. At the crossroads, competing in the 2009 Maccabiah Games changed everything. Schwartz became eligible to represent Israel which she will do so in London. The former Duke student will be Israel’s only female representative in track and field.

"Hottie in hot water..."
Posted by byoffer on 07-25-12 at 04:37 PM
I guess Olympians better be careful what they say on Twitter. Greek triple jump champion Voula Papachristou just hop, skip, and jumped her way out of the Olympics thanks to a Twitter post.

Her Tweet: “With so many Africans in Greece … at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!”

Is that really a racist comment? I don't see it as overly racist, and think that booting her from the Games for that is a hyper-sensitive over-blown reaction.

If someone says "With so many Americans in England for the games, apple pie sales will be up in London." would that be racist??

Oh, and here's a photo of Voula to comfirm her hottie-ness:

"RE: Hottie in hot water..."

"RE: Hottie in hot water..."

I agree, this is rather extreme and her apology sounded sincere. Perhaps she has her cultural biases, but you can be sure that there are other athletes with much greater biases, but didn't make the mistake of tweeting them.

I thought bans were offenses like doping (9 out so far), but it seems the IOC itself is a dope. They won't allow a single minute of silence for the '72 Munich tragedy? Isn't that racist by their own misguided definition?

... or at least the top 20 in their ability to pay their heating bill!

Quite a juxtaposition against many other athletes who train just as hard but who have to scramble for dollars from small sponsorships, minimal stipends from the national teams, and part-time jobs around their training.

The full top 20 list of highest earning Olympians and their earnings in the last 12 months:
1. Roger Federer ($54.3 million)
2. LeBron James ($53 million)
3. Kobe Bryant ($52.3 million)
4. Maria Sharapova ($27.1 million)
5. Kevin Durant ($25.5 million)

6. Carmelo Anthony ($22.9 million)
7. Usain Bolt ($20.3 million)
8. Novak Djokovic ($19.8 million)
9. Chris Paul ($19.2 million)
10. Li Na ($18.4 million) - this one shocks me - she must get a lot of Chinese endorsements

11 Deron Williams ($18.2 million)
12 Pau Gasol ($17.2 million)
13 Serena Williams ($16.3 million)
14 Caroline Wozniacki ($13.7 million and no majors!)
15 Tony Parker ($13.1 million)

16 Andy Murray ($12 million also no majors)
17 Manu Ginobili ($11.5 million)
18 Andre Iguodala ($11.4 million)
19 Tyson Chandler ($11 million)
20 Marc Gasol ($10.9 million)
