"Things I didn't like today."

1. Being unable to board my flight due to the pilot smelling jet fuel when he landed the plane in Fresno.
2. Waiting a half-hour for the local mechanic to check out the plane.
3. Finding out the repairs required a crew to be flown in from San Francisco.
4. Being sent back to the ticket counter to stand in line with the other hundred passengers on the canceled flight.
5. Seeing only one ticket agent behind the counter.
6. Calling our corporate travel agent and finding out there were no more useful flights out today.
7. Calling the airline directly and being put on hold for a long time while the agent tried to rebook me.
8. Being rebooked on a less-preferred airline tomorrow morning and gaining a second connection to get home.
9. Getting no compensation from the airline other than a free hotel room.
10. Finding out that there are many events in Fresno today, meaning all hotels near the airport were full.
11. Being sent to a faraway downtown hotel.
12. Dodging homeless people while crossing the street to a tacqueria which had good reviews on Yelp.
13. Having a lousy meal at the tacqueria.
14. Dodging different homeless people while crossing the street to get back to the hotel.

Things I won't like tomorrow:

1. Wearing today's clothes. Again. (At least I have toiletries.)
2. The 4:30 am cab ride to the airport, since it's too early for the hotel shuttle to be operating.
3. The plane changes in both Denver and Chicago.
4. Flying an airline which falls somewhere between detested and loathed on my opinion scale.
5. Losing a day of my life due to airline malfeasance.

So how was your day?

You could have driven down to my house I'd have taken you to a better airport, with a better connection on a better airline. And I know a good Mexican restaurant. Think about it for next time.

1. Getting a less attentive pilot.
2. Boarding a flight on a fuel-leaking airplane.
3. Boom.

yes, those were my thoughts also.

I'd rather have a thread by a grumpy Max than an obit thread for Max.

1. Landing at a US airport that I have traveled to frequently.
2. Waiting for an hour at the baggage claim for an hour with no bag in sight.
3. Finding out from baggage assistance that as of today, my bag is now to be picked up at the new International Terminal.
4. Waiting 40 minutes for the shuttle to the new terminal.
5. Not being able to board the shuttle as it was already full.
6. Waiting another 30 minutes for the next shuttle.
7. Arriving at the new terminal only to be told I will need to check in and pass through security to obtain my bag.
8. Waiting another 30 minutes to find a person who knew what they were doing.
9. Now driving to a hotel through rush hour traffic which I would have completely avoided.
10. Arriving at hotel 4 hours later than planned.
11. Not knowing where I am supposed to check in for the return flight tomorrow.

Isn't travel glamorous?

Wait, you and your bag went to different terminals? I've never heard of that before.

Yes. And today, I am not entirely certain what terminal I am supposed to go to check in. My colleague who traveled back yesterday missed his flight as a result of all this confusion.

I saw a commercial for their services last night. They claim to offer unsecured loans of up to $10,000. Just call and the cash will come. And as with other such companies, they're obligated to flash a little bit of financial information at the bottom of the screen in tiny print that's barely there long enough to read a fraction of it. Which almost had to mean that I'd misread what little I'd been able to scan. Surely no one could be legally charging an interest rate of 89.68% APR, right?

Sorry Max. That does sound like a very crappy day.

Hopefully the sun is up today, and it's much, much better!

Those homeless people were there to protect marooned travelers from lousy taqueria meals.

There is one thing that makes it all OK.

You've escaped from Fresno.

things happen in Fresno? Amazing.

When I was waiting at the Fresno airport, I checked flights from Denver to Indianapolis on my phone and saw a nonstop flight from Denver to Indy which left ten minutes after my connection to Chicago. Sensing an opportunity to eliminate the Chicago leg, as soon as I landed in Denver I asked a nearby gate agent, who referred me to United customer service. Arriving at customer service and seeing several people lined up for the single agent, I gave up on the idea due to the short timeline and went to the gate agent for the Indy flight. He thought he could switch me over, but he'd first have to remove me from the Chicago flight before adding me to the Indy flight. Shortly after removing me from the Chicago flight, he found out that he couldn't make the change after all since my ticket originated from a different airline. Now out of time and no longer having a valid boarding pass, I began running to the gate for the Chicago flight.

Side note: Mile-high Denver is not the best place for people to run through the airport due to the elevation and associated thinner air.

Arriving at the Chicago gate, the boarding area was empty and I was notified that the best they could do was put me on standby while they counted available seats. They came up with three available seats... and there were four people on standby. Fortunately for me, my ticket had a "distressed traveler" code printed on it, so I was suddenly #1 on the standby list and was given a seat. As I walked down the jetway, I saw a large pile of gate-checked luggage. Due to my late arrival, there was no room for my rollerboard suitcase in the overhead bins, so it was tagged and sent to the baggage hold.

Now baggage-less except for my laptop bag, I was off to Chicago.

And ninety minutes after arriving in Chicago, I was off to Indy.

Surprisingly, my bag was one of the first ones on the luggage carousel and I made it to the parking shuttle bus just before it pulled away.

Then to top off my day, traffic was beyond dreadful all the way home.

Travel is an adventure.

Thank - you! I had to try and make a connecting flight which was hopeless to begin with because of an almost 2 hour delay in Vegas. After running a few blocks, I thought I was going to have a heart attack and was shocked I was that out of shape. Now I can blame the altitude.

I did an O.J. one time while in Houston. I discovered upon arriving at terminal D that my next flight was over in terminal C, and that I only had 15 minutes to check in. I asked the lady at the help desk for directions and she pointed the way on a map, and I asked her if it was far and if I would have time. She said, "Well, you'd better run NOW." I barely made it on time and was sweating like the dickens by the time I got into my seat, still gasping from the lack of air and the heat out there.

I did one of those in Miami after having had the misfortune to be stuck with a coworker who was more occupied with flirting with a waiter than getting to the airport in a timely manner.

Karma is lovely, though. When we got to the gate they'd already released our seats. I got on, she didn't.

I'm pretty shocked that your bag made it. Denver is so big inefficient forthcoming that they actually tell you that if you don't check your bag 50 minutes before your flight, that it's not getting on the plane. *

(many a bag from Denver had to be delivered to my office back in the day since I often changed flights or didn't make the 50 minute cutoff...)

* at least there used to be signs to that effect at curbside check-in. It's been a while.

Good things about today - I flew on Air Canada today and it was lovely. My Nexus Pass was especially wonderful to get through Customs and security.

Bad things about today - I met with Canada Customs about some work related things and they have a laundry list of things that I have to provide them in about a week. I just smiled and said sure, my group can put in 120 hrs in 3 days to get you what you need. Then I realized that 3 of my best folks are out for the next week. I love regulations.

Surely, you must be mistaken. Maybe you got in a wrong line-up and ended up on a different airline.

Jeez, people! Just post what you mean. I hate five word posts that could mean anything. Quit fishing for responses to "see who really cares about me".

Here's what I've seen today:

I should really be more sleepy than this...

I'm not giving up hope yet.

mmmmmmmmm yum <no picture or location provided>

I am sooooo glad today is over. Hoping tomorrow goes better!

I mean, sure, you're a facebook friend, but that doesn't mean I like you enough to go poking around all these meaningless posts for more information. Just say what's happening and get on with life.

Also, I don't like Kindergarten Graduation. Or any graduation until after 12th grade. It is NOT a graduation. It's a promotion from one grade to the next.

"about Airports"
Posted by jbug on 05-18-12 at 11:23 AM
since it's the subject

Memphis has always had much higher airfares than Little Rock AR & Nashville. Many people will drive to either of these (several hours) to save on the airfare; and yes, even with the high gas prices you're still saving money - just not time (business travelers probably are using Memphis)

This was actually on the news this morning; Memphis is one of the top 3 in the US for highest air fares!
& it's all because the city wants/needs the money to operate the airport and of course line the pockets of the mayors, etc.

They are actually trying to get a few more airlines to use the airport to hopefully lower fares.

Anyone else drive out of your way to get lower fares?

Maybe next time I should fly into much-cheaper San Jose and make the 3-hour drive to Fresno.

"RE: about Airports"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 05-18-12 at 03:45 PM
Yeah I've driven down to Buffalo and Detroit to take flights within the U.S. rather than to fly from the much-closer Toronto or Hamilton airports because fares can be as much as 50-60 percent lower. I also took the train from Buffalo to New York rather than from Toronto in order to save a lot of $$.

Ship yourself via FedEx, it might be cheaper.

"This was yesterday"
Posted by cahaya on 05-18-12 at 10:41 PM
... and it took a day to be able to write about it.

My son flew out to San Diego yesterday. He graduated in December, found a job through his girlfriend (soon to be fiance, I expect) there.

So, after more than 24 years of living with us, he is finally out on his own. DW and 8-year old DD cried at the gate entrance seeing him off, and my eyes welled with tears with them. We're sad to see him to, yet glad he's ready to make his way in the world in his journey in life, a journey that began with this flight.

I'm proud of him and let's wish him well and good luck! :`)

... for the well wishes and grats.

It's quiet around here, even with 8-year old DD around, because she's quiet too!

I took DW and DD out to the drive-in movie last night to get their minds off of DS for a while. Pirates and Battleship, although not the greatest movies I've seen, were good distractions.
