As a boy, Sagebrush was quite taken by the comic book Thor which led to a lifelong interest in anything Nordic.

I have been into boats and pre-industrial ships ever since my memory started. The best part of baths was playing with my boats. Even though we lived in the desert in Sagebrush Country, I was still a sailor at heart.
Streams were for boats, my grandmother's goldfish pond with those very scared fish (scared when I was around) was for boats. You name it.
I got into drawing sailing ships when I discovered the world of explorers, which added to the mystique of ships----they were something that you could explore with.
Then, one day I opened a children's history book and saw my first drawing of a Viking ship. I knew I'd died and gone to heaven. All other ships disappeared, and it was all about Vikings and their ships. And exploring, too.
That was my world until I joined the Navy and realized how much it sucked. I loved being at sea, but the Navy was a horror story. On the other hand, I spent all the time in the Orient and surrounding areas, so I got to do a LOT of exploring in jungles, old overgrown WWII defense areas, and the seediest bars in the seediest parts of the seediest town (those were the best).
Later, Vikings reentered my life, and I carved a ship when I was recovering from knee surgery.
A few years ago, I had a prof who was really into genetics. She took one look at me and said, "Well, you've got a lot of Viking in you!" I was surprised. I told her I was half Irish and part Scottish. She said, "The Vikings did a lot of raping. So, there are a lot of Irish folk and Scots who are descended from Vikings." Oh.
The history of the bouncy is another story. It was presented to me as a badge of honor, and I am proud to post it.

This is as good a place as any to spout off...
So last week, the oldest boss son tells me he's going to spend a couple of weeks w/ me learning to do my job. I don't think too much of it at the time; he's been trying to learn the bookkeepers job for a couple of years now (). When I was out w/ my surgery, & when I have to go to doc appts w/ DH, another guy takes over for me.
Yesterday, he actually gets here at 7:30 (he usually drags in about 9 or 9:30). It turned out to be one of those super slow days; few phone calls; few orders. He sat in here most of the morning complaining of how sleepy he was; then just didn't come back in here after lunch - which was ok by me.
Then I got to thinking of how the man who had been here 33 years was just 'laid off'. Larry told them about a yr ago that he'd probably retire Aug 2012 when he turned 62. They immediately hired 2 men to be trained on his job; and let him go at the end of March. At his age, his insurance was high of course, & even tho he had been here the longest, he was not the highest paid employee; but I'd heard complaints that they thought he was being paid too much (comparing his pay I guess to the 2 new guys who could now do his job).
Today, I flat out asked Jeff if he is learning my job so I can be let go like Larry. He beat around the bush a bit; I told him not to bullshit me. He says he needs to learn my job in case I need to take medical leave for DH or my mom (which is a possibility) & to cover when we go to doc appts. . He says I have a job here as long as I want it.
I will NOT go quietly like Larry did.
They better not be screwing me over.
I don't think they are; I really don't think Jeff will ever be able to do my job as well or as thoroughly as I do (yes, I'm good at what I do & I know it.)
Today, he is hanging out in the office next to me doing "homework" for some classes he is taking.
Again, it's a slow phone day. But at least w/ him out of my immediate space, I can play during the quiet time.

I would try and look very, very busy to scare him off. If your spidey sense is tingling then pay attention to that and don't make it easy for them to think you are replaceable.

You know Qpie, that is a very good suggestion.
When i get motivated I can find lots of things to keep me busy; lots & lots.
I just have to want to do them.
So, I could get started on a lot of these projects & make him think I do stuff every day - all day long.
but then, I'd have no time to play here or in the other place.
Knowing him, he'd not even notice that I was busy working on something all the time.
He is supposed to be working on his 'homework' afterall.

I have nothing to worry about.
He won't stay in here long enough to learn anything. He sits in the other office looking at magazines or wanders around the shop.
I've taken & prepared for shipping 8 parts orders today & had another customer come pick an order up.
He came in & saw all the packages & said "When did all that happen?"
He is probably the laziest person I know.
