So I am tongue in cheek recommending a restaurant to one of my invisible friends. A CIA restaurant as it happens, I made up loads of amusing quips before I found out it actually stands for Culinary Institute of America

In her reply she said TGIFridays (UGGH!), now I have only eaten at TGIFridays in the UK which was fairly awful tbh, however as a nation we are incapable of running any American style restaurants so I wasn't too surprised. However when I go to Floridia just next to my hotel is a Friday's Sports Bar (I sit outside away from the screens and sport) which features the same menu. When I think of burgers I think of McDonalds hockey pucks, or BKs revolting grey things, or frozen burgers cooked on a barbecue. Anyway for some unknowable reason I ordered a Jack Burger, they asked me how I wanted it cooked, interesting I thought and said medium, what I received made me realise why people love burgers, I finally "got" the idea of a burger, and for that I will defend Fridays every time!

Teaching.

Seriously. I don't know if it's because everyone remembers vividly the very worst teacher they ever had, or if they really do think we all go into this profession to get summers off. But if there are ever articles about teaching on message boards, or Yahoo etc., the venom comes out full force.

Not to mention those that say - "High School?! WHY would you possibly want to teach high school?"

I've always wanted to post this simple reply to the meanies:
"If you think my job is so easy, the perks so marvelous,
and REALLY want your summers off, than why don't YOU go into teaching?" lol

Of late, however, things have been very difficult.

I teach in Los Angeles, and thanks to some quite horrific recent events, teachers here are being put under a huge microscope. A co-worker (& good friend) has been pulled from his classroom and while waiting for the investigation (which I'm sure will prove he did absolutely nothing inappropriate) he fell and broke his elbow. Calling this past week svcky would be about 600% understatement.

Indeed.

Three teachers stand out in my memory:

My sixth grade teacher, Mr. Pontius, who encouraged me to excel in everything I did.

My eight/ninth grade art teacher, Mr. Clark, a commercial artist on the side who encouraged me to be creative in my art and wanted me to work with him after seeing some of my work in class.

My tenth grade English teacher, Miss Wingfield (an elderly lady who loved the writing craft), the only one who taught me how to write properly and who loved, loved, loved my two journals, one every day journal of musings and one dream journal.

One teacher is on my sorry to say she was my teacher list, my 8th grade English teacher who accused me in class of cheating on a spelling test by looking at other people's papers (and I was just spacing out looking at nothing even if my eyes were in that direction). She didn't believe me and I immediately took a permanent dislike toward her for it.

Are we leaving out RTV shows? Because I'm pretty sure my Real Housewives addiction fits here.

I like chain bagel places like Einstein's. Bagel elitists look down upon me. I've had bagels for three straight days in NYC (different shops) and they were good. I just also find the bagel chains just fine. *shrug* Could someone bring me an everything bagel breakfast sandwich in the a.m.?

We like Einstein Bros. There isn't one particularly close to our house, and we have ventured over to the closest once or twice in the past year. I like them more for their bagels than their espressos.

I think it's balut - a boiled duck egg/embryo.

It's balut I intentionally picked the image I thought would be least objectionable.

It's the only picture I could find that didn't actually show the duck fetus.

When I was younger, I couldn't actually eat the entire balut. The duck usually already had a beak, bones and feathers, and I found the texture to be rather vile. The harder parts would be crunchy, like chewing on chicken ligaments (or tendons, whichever the white part at the end of the bone is), and the feathers tend to stick to my throat when I swallow. The toenails and beak are the toughest to eat. They were hard, but they didn't really crunch. I think the toughest part though was the "disgust" factor.

I didn't want to bite into the duck because the part that I didn't bite off would still be left on the egg, and you start feeling sorry for the duck because you literally just bit its head off.

When I got older, I learned that the best way for me to eat the duck is to chew it well and chase it with the juices inside the egg. The yolk is actually very soft and tasty, and I usually like to eat that with the white part, which is usually hard and tough to chew.

And yes, I tried to make this post as graphic as possible.

So you wouldn't mind a feather in your McNugget?

"RE: Things that you love that other people look down on"
Posted by SpotTheDiffference on 03-28-12 at 04:52 AM
Honestly? I'd probably still eat it if the feather's not too big. Besides, I've eaten worse. As in "there's-a-hair-in-my-food-but-I'm-too-hungry-to-complain" kind of worse.

Spot - spam was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this post. I like spam, I really, really like spam. Fried spam with scrambled eggs, fried spam sandwiches, spam, hardboiled eggs and american cheese sandwiches - all is yummy to me. I do however have to sneak it. DH hates it and I can only buy it if I am doing the grocery shopping alone.

Not sure if I like your other thing there, but I haven't tried it yet so who knows?

"RE: Things that you love that other people look down on"

I honestly don't get why people don't like spam. It's greasy, it's salty, and it's meat (or at least it bears a strong resemblance to meat). You'd think everyone will like it.

"RE: Things that you love that other people look down on"
Posted by jbug on 03-19-12 at 09:55 AM
I like Spam - especially fried.
I think it's cause it's salty.
I don't add salt to many foods, so when I get something already salty, I likey!

My husband used to freak out at the thought of 1% milk being in the fridge, and I was like, "Dude, (1) you never just drink a glass of milk or eat cereal, and (2) I've been buying 1% milk for years and you've never known."

The sour cream is where I notice the biggest difference and have found that only Breakstone's makes a light version that sutis my taste.

I've found myself defending lard recently, and it made me a little uncomfortable. I just defend that it tastes better and is better for you than shortening. That doesn't mean I use it gratuitously. There's a time and a place for lard.

Dollar Store flip flops, where else can you buy 10 pair of this seasons footwear for under $15.

Pretty Little Liars TV show, I didn't know it was from a book series for the first two years.

Fluffernutters (peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiches)the perfect food and will last well past the end of civilization.

Speaking of the end of civilization, zombie movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, any B-sci fi movie. I could go on but the cheesier the better.

The Olympics summer or winter, I've watched them for years and pretty much have it on all day long and it doesn't matter who's competing in what sport.

We played it so much, after awhile you could hear the songs from the other side of the tape playing backwards. I still know all the words to Young Guns and Wham Rap! and yes, I still listen to them. So now I'm invisible, huh? How's this?

The TGIFridays I've eaten at have been sub-par. Maybe there are some better ones out there but based on my experience with 2 different locations, I'm not willing to try any others.

Now if you were to recommend an FBI restaurant, then I'd know you were joking. Unless there really IS an FBI restaurant...

You mean I wasted hours of my valuable time making this "just for you"?

Raisins are just dried up little pieces of love.
Uh Oh - that may not sound right.

When I learned that Survivor was filming in the Philippines, I got so giddily excited that I told everyone how big of a fan I was. I was extremely disappointed that not a single person at work shared my joy.

.. Oh, and Pokémon. I still play the games and am planning on getting the new one when it's released.

I know, I'm the only one in my family who likes survivor!

And I could never tell anyone in my family that I watch Survivor.

I would get judged. Guaranteed.

There's a lot I don't tell my family and for good reason.

Thanks snidget & tribe!
