So the surprise mainly shocks Locke? Or is it just revealed to Locke? Food for thought.

Ok lets guess what Kate's original crime was (yes, many already have).

I think it is pretty obvious that it will be something done in self defense with the intent of portraying Man Killer Kate sympathetically (sp?).

Her mother is still alive and kind of afraid of Kate. So my guess is that Kate killed her father while he was beating her Mother. The Mother, whom is probably a codependant closet case in denial, refuses to admit to the police the circumstances and lets Kate take the rap.
