"OT Cooking Club?"

I've been tossing this idea around for a bit. We have so many food threads and I know most of us like to eat, so I was thinking we might have some interested in a Cooking Club. Run much the same way as Breezy's OTBC.

Sign up if you're interested, if you want a specific week say so. Then when that week rolls around post your recipe - maybe on the Friday before so we can shop for ingredients over the weekend. We can then make the dish and review in the next week. I'm thinking it may help with some ruts we get into.

Maybe start up October 1st?

Ideas?

I love this idea. Anything that means that I have to dream up one less meal a week.

I'm in!

I think there should also be pics posted of the finished product, so those of us who are really bad cooks will have some idea of what it was actually supposed to look like.

LOL!
This cracked me up!
I'm not sure I'd know how to post a picture, but I also like to know what stuff is 'sposed to look like.

What would really be funny is to post a real complicated recipe and them post a picture of like, a peanut butter sandwich or something. ( sorry, pain pills make me silly)

Sure-this is where you come and cook for me, right? No?

Well, I'm still interested. I'm excited for the variety. Everything from crockpot recipes to meat muffins (my new favorite word-thanks, Fro!) to gourmet delights. It will be fun to see how many of us can't resist the urge to tweak the recipe to our own preferences.

Oh this sounds fun!
Can we have people sign up for different meals? Desert, sides, main, etc?

Oh and I was thinking just the other day that I have a recipe I want to add to the OT Cookbook thread, does someone have a handy link? I should bookmark it, I know it isn't in the archives.

Please oh please, yes.

My crock pot and I have found true love, and I want to share it with everyone.

Also, tonight I went balls-out with pan-seared lemon-thyme chicken, yukon mash, and pan-sauce with mirepoix.

I am totally in the cooking spirit of things.

One thing, though - I may have to sit out on dairy/pork things. Hope that's okay!

Because this is closer to how I look...

Great idea! Sounds like fun.

But I am a hopeless recipe tweaker.

And I would have to make everything low fat.

And I am much too lazy to post photos.

Etc, etc.

I think this is a great idea.

There was a gourmet club in my neighbourhood that got really catty, and they had a mission statement and all kinds of rules and regs.

As long as it doesn't get crazy regimented, I'm in.

The OTBC died this summer.

I like the idea though. I'll sign up for a recipe. I also think pictures are a must. All the food blogs I read have pics, I love the pics. Like Arkie said, I can tell that I made it right then.

Hey, I tried to be more cerebral AND interesting in my choice! Guess I should have stuck with a Kim Harrison book - I know Arkie would have particpated. Thank Goodness for Breezy - I think she's the only one that kept that from being totally embarassing.

"RE: Good luck"

One cerebral book is good - I think we had too many of them.
Two summers ago we were on a roll so I made the effort to read the book no matter what but we've lost momentum since then.

I agree making the cooking club every other week would be better than every week. Anything goes - pics, tweaking etc. It's just a means to foster discussion, plus with no rules or regs, we'll keep maroonclown happy that way!

Tummy hon, I am going to be making everything healthy and low fat, with or without any sweet talk and whether or not anyone else does it too.

There are 40 pounds less of me than there were a year ago so I have had a lot of practice taking the fat out of recipes.

I would love to see others ideas for this, too, though.

Would a recipe every two weeks instead of every week be better for everyone?

Isn't tweaking a must?

Pics perferable but don't let it keep you from participating.

Unless you request a specific time period I'm throwing you in a hat and assigning that way, so think about it.

I think every other week would be good, so that gives people a couple of weekends as well as plenty of weeknights to make the dish. I get busy some weekends and may not have much time to cook, but I rarely have two busy weekends in a row.

I'm up for this.

Are there going to be any sort of rules such as if the recipe is really something that my family/your family just won't eat, can we opt out of that week?

"RE: OT Cooking Club?"
Posted by Ahtumbreez on 09-14-09 at 10:54 AM
There's a "have fun" rule. And of course you can opt out if it's something that makes you shudder. Hopefully they'll all be something that you can tweak to your family's liking. But I can understand if the recipe is something like Head Cheese with Calf Fries - though there is two around here that might like that.

"RE: OT Cooking Club?"

See the only rule is to have fun rule.

You may and SHOULD include dessert, but you don't have to. I personally don't do dessert on a normal basis but if you listed a dessert during your "reign" I would definitely use that as an excuse to eat dessert that night! *grin

Hey, it wasn't my cat, I didn't care if it hated me for holding them down for however long it took them to just swallow the darn pill. Well that and it wasn't like the retaliatory "gifts" were going to end up in my shoes.

I think the only rule should be, if you decide to share your saintly great grandmother's super awesome perfect-as-it-is recipe, don't be offended if people tweak it or don't like it or opt out of trying it. It's just food.

I'm not sure if people are going to be posting family favorite tried and true recipes, or finding interesting-looking stuff online/in magazines that they haven't tried. I was thinking of it kind of like the book club where in a lot of cases the host hasn't read the book yet when they suggest it, so we all try it and review it together.

I think if you tweak a recipe you should share your tweaks. Personally, I believe that any recipe, no matter how perfect, has room for variations and improvements.

I don't have a grill, so if grill stuff is posted I'll be adapting it for the oven/stove. But that shouldn't stop people from posting grill recipes!

Yep - what Fro said.

My mother is one that gets bent if she shares a recipe and someone tweaks it, but she has no qualms on tweaking someone else's recipe. I don't get the no tweaking thought process. Heck, I usually tweak my own recipes!

edited to add - Fro you should invest in a George Foreman grill. I just dug mine out from the back of a cabinet because we've had so much rain BBQing is out of the question. I'd forgotten how well the GF does steaks and veggies and ...

I have an old (really old) George Foreman grill. (Or, it might be gone, I know it was in the "go away" pile.) I didn't really care for it. It was really small and a pain to clean.

Maybe the newer ones are better?

Mine's one of the old, small ones. I wipe it down with a damp paper towel while it's still red hot and it cleans up great. I've enjoyed it so much lately I'm going to upgrade to a larger one soon.

"RE: OT Cooking Club?"
Posted by frodis on 09-14-09 at 12:34 PM
I used to have to hold it by the side of the sink and wipe it down, then soap it up, then splash water at it (and all over the counter) and wipe it some more, and then splash more water at it to try to rinse it. Then I'd set it aside to dry and there would be goo in the grooves. Maybe that approach was wrong - wiping it while it's still hot makes more sense, but I take it you don't use soap on it? Is that it's seasoned, or is it not necessary?

Removable plates would be good. I might try another one - I'm not opposed to the grill but I don't like kitchen appliances that I feel the need to swear at.

I've been whining about not having an outside grill for along time. I should just shut up and get one.

"RE: OT Cooking Club?"
Posted by Ahtumbreez on 09-14-09 at 12:47 PM
I use vodka to dampen my towel with Easy-schmeasy and disinfected.

You should just shut up and get one. I wouldn't be happy without my grill.

Here's my grill - because I have split personalities. I love hardwood charcoal, but sometimes I like the convenience of gas.

Step 18:

And here's Step 1 of making peach jam:

Ideas:
-Post your recipe Friday to give time to shop over weekend
-Don't be offended if people tweak...because people will.
-Have fun rule!
-Peeps can join in at any time
-Can sit out if you aren't able to make it or really hate the whole recipe. But remember, tweaking A LOT is still allowed!
-Posting a pic of the finished dish is preferable for at least the recipe poster. Posting of a pic, however, should not be considered as required as it might not be possible/easy for some peeps.
-Tummy will assign weeks to peeps. Let her know if you want a certain week.
-Start October 1st with first recipe posted?

Questions remaining:
-New recipe/discussion every week or every two weeks?
-Single dish, or meal?
-If only single dish needed, main dishes only, or anything goes?

New recipe/discussion every week or every two weeks?

For me the weekend is the only time that I actually have hours to devote to cooking, rather than frying something off, boiling rice, steaming some veg and throwing a quick sauce together, so I would prefer every other week. However if we went with different courses each week that might be a different matter.

Single dish, or meal?

How many courses were you thinking of for a meal? Entrée, Fish or Meat and Sweet?

For me I was thinking of a three course meal, however I am more than happy to just do a main course.

If only single dish needed, main dishes only, or anything goes?

I was expecting main courses, however not being a dessert chef (My puddings were going to be Eton Mess and Bread and Butter pudding) it might be interesting to learn something new

My vote is for every week, but I wouldn't be opposed to every other
-Single dish, or meal?
My vote is for a single dish required, but other additions are very welcomed(such as veg/starch/dessert)

I'm either or - maybe start out with every other week to ease into it and then if everyone is bored and clamoring for more switch it to every week. Y'all vote and we'll go with majority rules.

-Single dish, or meal?
If you want to post a single dish - post a single dish. If you want to post a meal - post a meal. People can always choose whether they want to fix the whole shebang or not.

-If only single dish needed, main dishes only, or anything goes?
I think anything goes. I'd hate to miss out on a fabulous brulee just because we had a main dish rule. Remember the only rule is the "have fun rule".

I'll assign weeks this weekend - so yell if you have a preference.

I'd prefer every week but am good either way
-Single dish, or meal?
Chef's choice. Maybe if making a main it would be good to suggest a suitable side but not have to do the recipe, a suitable beverage, etc
-If only single dish needed, main dishes only, or anything goes?
as above, if making a side perhaps suggest that it would go well with, for instance, roasted chicken. Not necesary to post the roasted chicken though. We tend to eat one meat dish, one veggie or starch side and no dessert.

Will we be doing breakkies and lunches too?

-New recipe/discussion every week or every two weeks?

I'm more of an every other week, but since it is about fun missing a week or two here or there isn't going to be a problem, or I may just catch up every so often.

-Single dish, or meal?

I'm thinking more single dishes but meal suggestions, wine parings, beer parings, etc might be really nice if you know what goes really well with the dish.

-If only single dish needed, main dishes only, or anything goes?

anything goes. And some really great side dishes can be made as a main dish with a few tweaks and some vegetarian main dishes may make a good side dish for those that prefer a meaty meal.

"RE: Summary So Far"

some vegetarian main dishes may make a good side dish for those that prefer a meaty meal

Having a veg-head neighbour I've learned to adapt certain main meat dishes to a veggie dish. Subbing portobellos for meat, etc.

That might be a fun thing to add too, if so inclined, as to how to convert dishes from meat to veg and vice-versa.

This is by no means a request for a rule, just a suggestion

Anyone willing to trade with me? I'm tentatively out of town that week and it's when my finals will be wrapping up. January 22nd is the only other really bad week for me.

I will. I have a stew I want to do, so winter would be better for me.

So Boo and I will switch. She'll do Dec. 11th and I'll do April somethingoranother. Thanks, Boo! And thanks, Tummy, for organizing this!

So we post our recipe and a picture on our appointed date? Then everyone has at it and posts their notes two weeks later, or throughout the two weeks?

ETA - And of course I misspelled "clarification" I suck.

compliments of agman's little shoppe of siggies

Yes to the recipe and pics (if possible) and through-out the two weeks.

I figured it was a Canadian thing.

Next 4 up are Karchita, Slice, Boo and CT. As CT has it on Christmas she has leeway to post early, late or ontime.

CTGirl, just let us know so we're not panting after you.

I just dug this up the other day to bookmark it to remind me of my week. This has been fun. And I have learned a lot and ventured out a lot from my comfort zone. I still have to make Breezy's stew since it fell during a time when I had a huge batch already made.

Thanks everyone.

I am loving the cooking club, too. So is my family. Two weeks seems like a long time to wait but I think it's the perfect interval to build suspense and excitement over the next dish.

I'm having lots of fun with this! It has inspired me to make some spin-off dishes with similar ingredients but swapped around a bit, too. I feel like I'm emerging from my cooking rut.

It's an agman!

We are really enjoying this. So far, each of us has a different favorite recipe. Tho' I definitely will only try spaetzle again when I have a proper spaetzle maker

I am going to post my recipe earlier rather than later since everyone is so scattered over the holidays and has such different schedules. It seemed like ages before my turn and now it will be here before I know it!

I know what I'm going to make and have already made it once, but I need to make it again and take pictures.

This was a great idea Tummy. Thanks!
