"AI 11 Top 13 Performance ECST"

Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 02:16 PM
The good news, no playing around pretending there was only supposed to be twelve but now OMG it's a top 13...the bad news, we have a top 13, so 13 performances to slog through, but at least it is only one night of 13 performances this week.

Game Notices:

Post your Should Go and Will Go for Emydi's PTTE, and the directions to the funoffice pools for this season on it's thread as well. (all the fun of running a game without any of that pesky keeping track of the scores)

Some TV listings have this as Whitney/Stevie night, which means the mute buttons may wind up on the wrong side of the remote. 'We're going to take songs no one else should sing and prove no one else can sing them.' With frequent breaks for insincere praise. Joy. Rapture. Presumably lightning bolts.

And for the record: if Ryan announces this week's special guest mentor as Bobby Brown, I am gone.

This tweet doesn't give me a feeling of a warm fuzzy night...

Jermaine Jones ‏ @JJonesAI11

What do you do when people who claim to be music greats dont know what to do with your voice?

"RE: AI 11 Top 13 Performance ECST"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 08:39 PM
Rent a recording studio and do all the work yourself? 'Die from not-surprise' probably isn't his secondary option.

That "claim" is a dark word when it comes to his long-term prospects: it's basically an open invitation for sabotage to begin -- or so the producers will happily interpret it. I thought he stood a chance of making the tour: now I think he stands a better one of getting the death slot before the travelers are finalized. Pull the tail and find out it's attached.

Checking the AI list of cleared songs: nineteen for Whitney and forty-one for Stevie. So it's possible to get some surprises in the second half of the list, but it's also safe to assume anything performed from the first will be very old, very bleated news. (I'd paste, but it's a .pdf and resisting.)

I was hoping to get a few people back now that we're in single elimination again. Instead, I think we just eliminated another seven percent of the audience.

Voting will reveal the bottom males and bottom females, then eventually (probably) get down to the lowest vote-getter per gender. The panel decides who goes home from there.

*slow head shake*

Whatever they still had, they're losing it.

Remember how the girls got slaughtered last year, one after another, like 5 in a row before one guy exited? I think announcing the lowest guy and girl will help support the girls...but it depends on if the guy is a favorite of the producers or not.

So it is lowest vote gettig guy and girl and the judges (cough, cough, make that the producers) determines the boot.

"Joshua Ledet"

Song and What Not To Sing Rating, When Available (and if this was on the facebook picture of song list).

I Wish 10.0

That is 10 out of 100

"RE: Joshua Ledet"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:09 PM
That piano key background made me wonder if I'd spiked my dinner with something.

Randy, hear you sing these ballads, and now you come out rocking, if you feel the beat you can do anything. Flavorless, I mean Flawless. oops.

JLO, so much love, I felt your performance, through what you were doing, That hand thing is a church thing, you feel it through your body, not coming out of their mouth, feel it. Mary gave you some great direction.

Steven, Randy is right, you brought it home, you listened to Mary J.

"RE: Joshua Ledet"
Posted by whimsey on 03-07-12 at 09:15 PM
That was fun. I agree, I wish his wardrobe was as stylized as the performance.

"RE: Joshua Ledet"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 09:12 PM
Needs some Wardrobe help.

Needs to learn some basic dance moves.

Doesn't do a horrible job with the song. It was actually pretty competent: it just didn't move me to do anything other than listen. If I heard this from a street performer, I'd keep moving while considering what I was going to get for lunch that day. He has room to improve and potential to do so, but this was nowhere near what the panel is trying to sell it as.

You can probably apply the last part of that to the entire night.

"RE: Joshua Ledet"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 09:25 PM
OK, having Joshua sing first while there are plenty of other people who can be eliminated.

I thought he did a great job and was very entertaining. I can totally see him as a successful artist and on tv in the future.

I hope he gets a lot of votes despite being buried by going first.

I'm Your Baby Tonight 31.0

"RE: Elise Testone"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:19 PM
Oh.My.Heck, The Solar Flare is on her abdomen and destroyed the bottom third of the dress!!!

At least making wardrobe snark keeps me busy while I am trying not to hear this trainwreck.

GLOA has a rating of 48.5 so may have been the better choice.

J.Lo, Whitney is a beast, wanted to make it your own, and Whitney has such a specific style, you have an amazing voice, just not your best, timing issues, other things, felt a little unsure, switched a song on you last minute but I know Elise.

Steve. Has so much character you need to find the just right song. Chorus line was so be before, but missing tonight.

Randy. Felt like you were boxing with the song. You don't have to prove it every note you have that big old voice.

BOOOOO

This girl is amazing, that one wasn't good.

"RE: Elise Testone"
Posted by whimsey on 03-07-12 at 09:19 PM
The performance wasn't quite "on". I liked her singing, but the music seemed karaoke - didn't seem to match her interpretation of the song.

"RE: Elise Testone"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 09:23 PM
Wardrobe is high.

Elise is also high.

They don't seem to be working from the same drug.

Normally if you see those kind of gyrations, you're supposed to grab her tongue before she swallows it.

Wonder if she brought enough for Steven.

"RE: Elise Testone"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 09:33 PM
Elise, meet AI production. The really reallys are setting in for her that she won't get to do what she wants to do.

If she had lived with the song longer she could have nailed it. Her trepidation showed on her face.

Not her best but I would go see a night of Elise's singing at a club. Agree with Steven that she has a lot of character in her voice.

She got an AI lesson tonight. Buck up, Elise, and play the game. Smile and say thank you, may I have another. Taylor Hicks did it all throughout his season and he won.

ROFL! Can MC handle him?

My DVR ate his performance...skipped straight to Erica singing.

I'll have to check his and Erica's at MJ's but from what I saw of Erica, she was doing well.

"RE: Jermaine Jones"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:25 PM
I think it is more wardrobe doesn't know what to do with him. Still not a fan of the rosary as necklace look.

Steven, for a moment last week you had a wobble, but this song fit you like and Armani suit.

J. Such a sweetheart. Connect with the song a bit more, now we have nailing all the notes, really singing to somebody, sing to me. Half way loosened up and I felt that a bit. Sometimes I just start feeling it and that is what I want from you.

Randy. Low kinda deep kinda thing, spot on with the verses, didn't like the chorus as you changed the melody. I'm just being real. J brought up, sit in it don't have to force it. Your register is different enough.

"RE: Jermaine Jones"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 09:26 PM
High school freshman who got onto the football team and hasn't figured out how to stop wearing his letter jacket yet.

He does have a good timber to his voice, but the performance has a bit of Look Out Below to it. It felt like he was concentrating so hard on lyrics and tone, he forgot to have any fun with it. The musical bar exam: half pass, half fail, and nearly everyone has a nervous breakdown somewhere along the way. We're not going to see the best of him until he learns to relax.

I didn't expect to see anything which reflected his tweet complaint and didn't. Still... I have some idea of what I'd do with him. I just don't know if he wants to become an Italian citizen.

I'm not sure why the stage lighting has her in the Illuminati pyramid.

"RE: Erika Van Pelt"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:36 PM
Starts off trying to sing lower than Jermaine, but she does hit the high note at the end.

R. Listen when you started that song, that little bit J got goosies. you have an amazing voice and unbelievable tone, when you hit that out chorus and let yourself go it was unbelievable. Yes Yes Go Go. Don't think...you can sing anything, let yourself go.

J. Goosies before you started singing, you are so I don't know what it is, combine with the tone and the fullness of your voice makes songs come alive. Playing it a little bit safe, cannot wait until you stop thinking and you let loose. That is the tip of the iceberg.

S. Feel the same way, in the beginning then you climbed up to the chorus and then you got into it. I think you are great.

"RE: Erika Van Pelt"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 09:44 PM
....missed the beginning of her song but the part I saw was very good. They want her in top 10 perhaps.

AI trivia:

Last year, Ashton Jones sang 3rd of 12 and got the boot.

AI 9, Lacey Brown sang 4th of 12 and got the boot.

AI 8, Jasmine Murray sang 5th of 13 and got the boot

AI 7, David Hernandez sang 8th of 12 and got the boot.

"RE: Colton Dixon"

I kept thinking, "What would Adam Lambert or James Durbin do with this song"? Not bad, but I hoped for more.

"RE: Colton Dixon"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 09:49 PM
And I was thinking....what would they have done with the song?

Colton = Durbin lite. I think he fine for top 10 but I dont see him as a winner of AI or even top 2.

Having said that he did fine with that song since Stevie isn't his wheelhouse. Meaning he did better with his adaptation than Elise did with hers.

"RE: Colton Dixon"
Posted by csnumber23 on 03-08-12 at 09:26 AM
He is a completely different singer than those two. I thought it was excellent.

"RE: Colton Dixon"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:46 PM
They are thinking of banning skinny jeans at one of the local schools according to the news, and seeing Colton's I think I understand why. Talk about bird legs. No one needs to know that about you.

S. That was outstanding, only as good as your last performance and note, that was beautiful.

J. Probably the most challenged, when you show your heart, your strong suit, that is what you did with that song, why it was great.

R. Technically wasn't picture perfect. BOOOO Hang on, great constructive criticism here. The things most out of tune, soft and low, the last 8 bars were flawless, look at it like a Cold Play or a Rock Ballad and you slayed it at the end.

"RE: Colton Dixon"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 09:47 PM
So if you ever wondered what would happen if James Durbin and Adam Lambert had a baby and raised it in a house filled with love, kindness, and really dubious production values, that? Was it. Unfortunately, the genetic techniques involved didn't allow him to inherit any talent, but at least he had a great home life.

I think the shark fin hair is used for slicing the life out of the notes before they can escape.

"RE: Shannon Magrane"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 09:50 PM
I know. She is only 16. I she had more time with the song she might have nailed it. She imitated Whitney for the most part and I heard wobbles here and there.

"RE: Shannon Magrane"

That was unfortunate.

"RE: Shannon Magrane"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 09:53 PM
OK, I know the growling thing is supposed to indicate emotion, but when it seems very calculated as to I will do it here, it just doesn't do it for me.

J. Sweet baby, I think the thinking got the best of you. You can sing that song, we didn't get to hear that her tonight, you have to relax into it, think about what you are singing, no big notes you can't do, just tell the story. Relax and tell the story and make us feel it.

S. Your nerves got the best of you. Huge song, turn around, crashed and burned.

Sh. I know I can sing that song, I can sing my butt off in that song.

R. You are here because we know you can sing and sing that song, the nerves got the best of you. What you would go for you wouln't get. Blames it on the band maybe messing up but...

SH. Focusing on self, my nerves did get the best of me.

It's like a Giraffe hanging out with a pygmy Zebra when she and Ryan are together, isn't it?

"Tennessee Tuxedo."
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 09:53 PM
...that is what Wardrobe put her in, right?

She can't handle this song. The song is trying to escape from her. The judges are engaging in either a Level Four Depimping or Build Up The Slow Road Back From Failure. Shannon may not understand either one. All she knows is that the people backstage tried to make her look like a boy, and then someone told her to sing like a boy, and now she's getting verbally smacked around like a Southern liberal, except that they let her live.

Long way to go and a short time to get there.

Just had to get the falsetto in there, didnja.

S. I have love you. Male Naima in you, different flavor. Jamacain Patwa (?)

J. Have rhythm and swagger, weird little ending, maybe it happened to fast for me. I liked it a lot.

R. Here is the deal, you and Joshua showed another side of yourself. We didn't want it to stop, you showed America both sides. Job well done.

7 down, 6 to go. I think I need that bottle of ale that is chilling in the fridge.

He succeeded.

The notes are ugly.

The performance is ugly.

The hair whips are ugly.

The stage is turning colors I've only seen on warning signs for high radioactivity.

There has been such a plethora of riches lately they don't seem to think he really brought it in a Worster way. Bad, just bad, not OMH I have to vote for it bad, but if the rest stay boring he may win by default.

"RE: DeAndre Brackensick"

I think it was a fun performance. I liked Steve's mentioning the Jamaica like approach. I only saw him last week and was very underwhelmed with him and did not expect him to deliver as well as he did.

Poor Elise. I hope she is not the fodder for the week...or is that why the judges get to choose this time?

Mary J pulled the chorus back a bit, they say she is that good.

"RE: Skylar Laine"
Posted by Snidget on 03-07-12 at 10:12 PM
Can't tell if the weird phrasing was a forgot the lyrics, or just weird phrasing.

Oh she started the sway bots up again.

Started on the stool, but now standing and walking around.

She's going to have to shed those pants like a snake skin they painted them on so tight.

J. Definition of composure, can hold it together, parts in the front part got nasally, it is true, kept it together and gave us our biggest moment of the night. Amazing.

S. That was a think of beauty. Well done man, Front the way you climbed the ladder and at the end you nailed it.

R. The guys hit it on the head, the front a bit iffy, what I love about you, what are the other sides. Are they just in one bag. What you proved is you can sing any song. That was hot.

"RE: Skylar Laine"
Posted by Estee on 03-07-12 at 10:15 PM
Better than I'd expected. She got a grip and rode it all the way to the end without having to completely change the style. If she can keep that up, she could go a long way in this competition -- and that's before you factor her death-before-anyone-else voting block in.

"RE: Skylar Laine"
Posted by zazzy on 03-07-12 at 10:18 PM
Reba, er, Skylar, is carrying the weight of the country viewer ratings on her back so she isn't going anywhere fast.

Better than Kellie Pickler... so she is going to last awhile.

I think she tackled Whitney well and I was entertained.

R. Wasn't perfect but it was really good.

"RE: Heejun Han"

"RE: Heejun Han"

Somewhere Simon Cowell is saying "what a bloody wedding singer" and I agree.

I do not agree with the judges. There are so many better voices in the competition than his.

Top 13 format lends itself to showcasing Heyjun's comedy stylings and that is what is getting him votes imo.

"RE: Heejun Han"

Season Eleven: The Year The Asians Struck Back

He just might make the tour after all. On merit. Once I managed to ignore that horrible Head Of Cloud Deity on the background screen, he had the best male performance of the night to date. Wardrobe even had a clue. Hairstyle, still needs help. But he knows what his voice is and what it can do, which puts him ahead of the majority of the pack and all of the judges.

Tenth place might be the max, but now he's got a chance to get there.

S. I love your voice, nice passion, didn't fly like you usually do.

R. For me it wasn't your best, a difficult song, you have to put more swag in it to make it believable.

"RE: Jeremy Rosado"

I don't get why he is in the top 13 unless he is fodder but here he gets a favorable spot for singing tonight.

He's better than some we have had in previous top 13's but he is not in the same league as many of the other singers. I can only guess he goes somewhere in the first 3 and does not make the tour.

So they put a sleeve on the skinny girl with a fat strap on the other??

Standing O from the judges.

R. Let me say this, give it all to her. Is legit. This is one of the hardest songs in the world to sing, best vocals of night, best singer in the whole competition, nay the country if not the world.

J. Amazing, Speechless, those last three little things, OMG yes. so talented.

S. You may be the one, made 40 million people cry.

"RE: Jessica Sanchez"

This is why I like American Idol. This is why XFactor did not even hold my attention for one episode and why the Voice barely does for half an episode here and there. AI can do it well and despite the spotlight, the fan, and the coaching, the girl can sing and sing very very well. And she is young, like AI likes its girl winners.

This is why the girls sang Whitney. To showcase the girl who can sing the song they always tell the contestants not to sing.

I hope she or Hollie does not get Pia'd at 9th place. I want to hear many more Jessica performances.

Playing Acoustic Guitar.

Another WGWG on electric and I think a black guy on Electric Bass.

Horns on the side.

Very screamy.

S. You are an interesting character. HAve a lot of forget in your voice, you know what I'm saying.

J. Colton and you I was worried, but you took some of the other songs and you made it your own.

R. We need you in this competition, most different artist, alt/indie spirit. Waiting to see every time how you reinterpret, driving your own car in your own lane and I love it.

White guy with guitar in pimp spot.

Could the show have made their desired F2 any more blatant?

What did they hire the time guy from the X-factor to work in the booth screaching time calls out?
R In trouble, stand outs Joshua and Jessica. Crazy Good.
J. In trouble, not fair, have to say Shannon, So many strong performances.
Crazy, the girls were stronger. Songs just a little more range.
S. Elise and Shannon who he is worried about. Standouts. Checks notes. Jessica and Jessica.

I feel like Ryan's asking top two best and worst tonight could have helped Shannon since she was mentioned more than once. It puts her erstwhile fanbase on notice right away.

-- Shannon.

Expect an epic (and one-note) caricature.

I suspect they will only be able to capture her image from the knees down in the banner.
