Oh great, I have a migraine and then I find out that the song choices for this week are felling guitar heroes left and right MJ's Big Blog Link

*whimper*

Maybe it won't be as bad as I fear...yeah right.

*whimper*

Well keep any and all deaths, maimings, suicides, and hospitalizations on this thread until the cats come out from under the beds and the dogs stop howling on the West Coast.

Rats!

This was the part of the show I was most looking forward to. Now, at least for some folks, it's fast-forward instead of looking-forward time.

I know we've got the 'Azula always lies' element going here, but don't you think your reaction might be a little premature? This last time you were this freaked out, Tyra had just tried to claim she had teleportation technology. (And also that anyone who won the show could have a job afterwards, but that kind of paled next to the transporter.) We're not going to approach that level of raw ego and stupid -- right?

In a world where Tyra Banks gets into Harvard Business School I fear any disaster is now possible.

Interesting... the obvious match is Scotty going Johnny Cash. I'd also guess Casey doing CCR, he'd be a natural fit for one of my all-time fav bands.

Other than that, guessing Pia (or even Jacob) would do Aretha, Lauren doing Tina, Haley doing Janis (gawds), Stefano doing Elvis, Paul doing George Harrison (again, gawds). That leaves Michael and Percy for who's left. All of this is pure conjecture.

"RE: AI 10 Top 9 Performance ECST"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 08:00 PM
I think Pia has Tina here, Scotty takes Elvis as per his declared love, and Paul grabs Michael and kills us all.

"RE: AI 10 Top 9 Performance ECST"
Posted by zazzy on 04-06-11 at 08:02 PM
Pia already announced she's doing Tina RIver Deep/Mountain High

I'm guessing Aretha is Lauren?

And Haley - Janice J?

Jordan- Elvis, probably an Elvis Gospel?

Stefano- MJ

Agree Casey for CCR/ Percy

so James = Beatles

And yes, Scotty = J Cash

Who knows what Paul is singing, I'l have to go back to the tweet to see which artist I left out.

OK, now I see, Percy is the last one, so that's Paul I guess!

My opinion of her changed from the ##### on In Living Colour, to being completely charming on her many rom-coms. I don't think the Diva title is undeserving but one wonders how much of that is a side effect of her staff.

"RE: Jacob"

Takes out the ear piece in the first couple of lines. Is Naima singing back up, or just a look-a-like.

Did he say if he goes home it is because America is full of bad people?

Can't sing about sex, but will do mutual hip thrusts with the back up singer?

Actually did a nice job of that.

S. Saida Oh, one of the people who helped write the song, that is cool to have her as a back up singer. Bring another piece of yourself to the party every time you sing.

J. You make everyone know if you believe in yourself and stick to what is right you can do anything. Perfect on every emotional level.

R. Changed to do a deeper message, so proud of you, I was worried there were Jacob moments all over that. That was hot.

"RE: Jacob"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 08:16 PM
A deeper message? Why? Because the one in the actual song is just too ironic? And of course America is full of bad people. Here we are and we're watching the show. This makes us bad people. And y'know what that would make a Jacob vote? Even worse.

Hip thrusts aside, I felt it was oddly passion-free: he sang it as if reading off a piece of dogma he'd memorized without having any faith in the tract. This was the first time I'd seem his dial dip below a 6, and he picked the wrong song to do it with.

"RE: Jacob"
Posted by BriarRosie on 04-06-11 at 08:12 PM
He sure did a lot of hip thrusts (enough that Ryan commented on it) to have done "Let's Get it On" proud.

All in all, he hit his stride during the chorus, but I think the song was done well overall. Nice job, Jacob.

"RE: Jacob"
Posted by cahaya on 04-06-11 at 08:14 PM
Yup, figures Jacob would take the MJ pick. In some ways, he sang it better than MJ with his stellar vocals and the performance as a whole with the hip moves and duet thing wasn't too far off either. Going first is a tough place to be, but this performance won't be forgotten by the time the votes start rolling in.

"RE: Jacob"
Posted by zazzy on 04-06-11 at 08:33 PM
So much better than I expected for his doing an MJ song. He made me listen to words more than MJ does.

"RE: Jacob"

"RE: Jacob"

B3 and out this week.

It's not personal and it has nothing to do with her performance. She's female and she's not Lauren or Pia. Therefore, B3 and out this week. Now if I factored in her performance, B3 and out in about three minutes...

It was a reprise of what the males were doing at Top 24: let's look at the camera and try to speak on rhythm, because this is not a singing contest and we're about to prove that. I'd say she was musically all over the place, but there wasn't enough music to justify the comment.

And I swear that title is how her name looked when it came up on screen.

"RE: Hayley"
Posted by Snidget on 04-06-11 at 08:20 PM
She does look a bit to happy singing that, but I like the sound of it.

Mistimed the punch with the drum.

J. You are a contender, they need to be careful with Hayley, kepe that up you will be around for a minute?

R. I saw in the clip, is that bluesy soul thing you had the cool run at the end, that is the Hayley that we love, welcome back back back.

S. I couldn't find nothing wrong with that. JJ is my favorite and you take it up a few notches. you nailed it.

I must say that I didn't hate the growls that Haley is known for. This song really calls for that. I might say that I did not dislike her performance.

I might admit that I actually liked it. Don't let that get around, as she'll burst my bubble next week, I'm sure. If she makes it to next week, that is.

"RE: Hayley"
Posted by cahaya on 04-06-11 at 08:22 PM
Yup, Janis is the logical pick for Hayley, and for once I'll concede she did pretty well with it - as Hayley. It lacked the rawness of the original, which surprised me with Haley's knack for the scratchy growl, and frankly I thought it was a little too smooth. All in all, though, not bad. Just not akin to the original.

"RE: Hayley"
Posted by zazzy on 04-06-11 at 08:31 PM
Agree. She may have been coached to tone down the growl.

So far I am liking everyone tonight.

Before tonight's performance, I thought Haley shouldn't have been in the top 12. Not even the top 24. But wow, this time she was really good. I even used my Tivo to rewind and rewatch her instead of my usual habit of fast-forwarding through her performances. The ghost of Janis Joplin possessed her tonight!

"RE: Casey"

Playing the standing bass.

Lots of Bear Growling in that.

R. Made CCR proud, you've now made the upright bass cool. You put it in popular music, revolutionary.

S. I think you should put some wheels on that. You are not just a singer, a true musician, bring something different the full package, no one can play.

J. That is where you belong I'm paying top dollar to be in the front row.

Um, did the smoke from DWTS end up over here?

16 year olds should not sing this song, and no one should wear those shorts.

S. You know I love you. you came in a little girl and now you are a woman, I love your voice.

S. What is she going to do with this. She's amazing, yes (from the audience).

R. I haven't heard the other songs, most difficult ones, I think you did a good job on it. Some people who have really laid it out. You did a good job, props for that.

Given Steven's history, I was waiting for him to break into girl, you is my woman now.

"RE: Lauren"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 08:37 PM
Why is she wearing a diaper?

Well, the full force of her personality didn't come out on that: the lack of vomiting proves it... Not a bad rendition of the song, but she's suffering from the same problem just about everyone's had this year: power outages. That needed more energy behind it and she didn't have it to give. (Just one of many things Lauren doesn't have to give.)

And the makeover look? Early Jennifer Connelly without actually being Jennifer Connelly. She needs her own style, and that wasn't it.

"RE: Lauren"
Posted by JessicaRN on 04-06-11 at 11:06 PM
I thought she was wearing a diaper too, which made it even funnier when Steven said she had become a woman.

I thought her singing was kind of pitchy.

Like the stings accompanying him.

Hope he gets some votes.

"RE: James"
Posted by zazzy on 04-06-11 at 08:51 PM
Ok, went back and listened to it again. BTW, I like some of Styx songs. I think James could have had better light treatment than just one fixed spotlight. I'm thinking of the dramatic lighting treatment Adam got on Mad World. I wonder if James was coached to do a slow song this week. Liked it but wasn't wowed by it.

"RE: James"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 08:45 PM
I actually thought he was doing really well with that until the scream hit. And didn't stop hitting. And kicked my ankles before running away to rub ice cream all over the walls.

Note to Lighting: it is in your best interests to make sure his ears aren't filled with lava.

*reaching for the mute*

I really don't like the tone of his voice when he isn't over the top screaming. Oh dear, did I just say that.

String quartet on stage as well as electric guitar, oh that looks like the glory note *unmute*

J. Nice to see that side of you. What makes the rock n roll side work, that pain, or whatever it is for you, so special and vulnerable, great choice for you.

R. What I loved is seeing the true emotional side. We know you can hit the high notes, see you emotionally connect, you have to take chances to be an artist. Long career you have to be an artist. Good job dog.

S. George Harrison wrote that you gently weeped as well. Proud moment for you.

Wow, it's R&R week and James goes all soft. This guy truly is unpredictable. It was surprising how he sang in the lower range unlike previous weeks, with only the final note going into the upper registers. There was a lot of feeling in that song, and he reminded me of Adam Lambert's performance earlier this season which was also soft in tone. It's nice to see he doesn't have to chuck mike stands and dance on pianos to shine.

Starts out sitting on the stairs. Guitar and Standing Bass on stage.

Isn't James the one with the facial tic problem?

Bunch of girls ran up and hugged him. Ryan is confused by this.

R. Scotty is in it to win it. Anybody who thought you were a one trick pony, never seen this side who is going to beat him.

S. All hat and no cattle. 57 years ago and I heard girls screaming in the audience, hope that kind of music comes back into play.

J. You are fun. A little bit of flavor in there like you've been watching some rap videos.

And that's a compliment. I'm going to forgive the little weird vocal bits in that performance because he did it as pure 50s and the little weird vocal bits were mandatory. He would have scared Ed Sullivan to death and started a Congressional investigation into the evils of wild teenage dancing all over again. 100% throwback -- and the first performance I've enjoyed all night.

Well, I was wrong about him doing Johnny Cash, and he does Elvis! And he does do Elvis. For once, we see that he's more than just a one-track country singer and he captures the early R&R sound from the Elvis era with an interesting difference in vocals we haven't heard before. I'd like to see what else he can do. Thumbs up.

Scotty was adorable, and he did the song so well, I didn't mind that he likes to hold the mic like it's a piccolo.

That was my favorite performance of the night.

"RE: Scotty"

I was thinking harmonica but piccolo works! In any event, it is strange but other than that, he has more stage presence than some of the others.

She moves the same way as Celine, too. But she did manage a competent performance.

And I had another "aha" moment tonight regarding Haley. I figured out what she reminds me...she's the Schoolhouse Rock performer of "Sufferin' Before Suffrage". All she needs is a flat iron, Pia's ponytail style, and a Wonder Woman-ish patriotic midriff top and capris.

Horns on stage.

Please to never let Gwen style anyone ever again.

Got some pyro at the end.

S. Murderer, you killed it. A million guys having a million drinks about you tonight.

J. That was amazing vocally you proved you could sing up tempo. Really special up there. I am going to keep pushing you. Need to study great performers, spectacular, keep studying.

R. Prove Randy wrong, not that we all believe in you. You should what all those singers had as many uptempo as ballad hits. I knew you could deliver, work on the movement. Yo Pia is in it to win it.

"RE: Pia"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 09:10 PM
Y'know what I don't believe? That she was performing for the usual ninety seconds. I wish I had a stopwatch on that -- I could swear they gave her extra time and (relatively) lots of it.

Oh, and other things I don't believe? Anything the judges read off the script.

"RE: Pia"
Posted by zazzy on 04-06-11 at 09:11 PM
Her top half outfit was ok, but Pia's got a good body and doesn't need the camoflage-y dressing on the bottom that Gwen does. The bottom half of the outfit = fail.

Pia let loose with her voice but her lower body is still stiff. Maybe if she learned a dance to the song...not to dance it when she sings, but to get the movement and energy from the dance and put a bit of that into her singing.

I wonder if she did pageants when she was younger.

"RE: Pia"
Posted by Estee on 04-06-11 at 09:07 PM
I'm not sure eating the microphone was artistically necessary.

She didn't keep full control of the song throughout: it reached the point where she sounded higher than Steven and looked as if the only cure would be throwing her into the river and hoping the cold shock brought her out of it. When she did have some mastery of what she was trying, it started to work -- but the song ran with her more than she with it.

Not her genre. She can potentially do this with more practice, but she's safer with the ballads.

Forward or back?

"RE: Pia"
Posted by cahaya on 04-06-11 at 09:10 PM
Nice change of pace over previous weeks, Pia actually does something resembling a performance to go along with her already established stellar vocals. She moved! It's like someone removed the magnets from under the stage and her feet. She needs to keep going this direction to avoid being labeled as the immobile standing diva doing a song rather than performing it. Tonight was a refreshing change.

Okay, I remember the procedure for this. We have to get him on his back, open his mouth, and grab his tongue so he doesn't wind up swallowing it. After that, we find the anti-seizure medication, pray it doesn't have to be administered as eyedrops because we'll never get the lids open, and dose him as best we can while we wait for the medics to arrive. After that, we all get treated for damaged eardrums and sent home. So who's calling the ambulance?

"RE: Stefano"
Posted by Snidget on 04-06-11 at 09:17 PM
Sitting on the stage stairs.

And there is a vice under him squeezing something tight to get that falsetto.

What is that under his bottom lip? Did the color a zit to make a beauty mark or is he trying to grow a soul patch and failing.

J. I knew you had it in you, that was beautiful. I loved it. I really felt for the first time it had something else, another layer of emotion, singing it about somebody, magic.

R. I liked it, the first part was jerky. J interrupts. You can take your time, before the R&B quick phrasing. Sometimes you don't need to counterpunch, let it marinade.

S. Are we through. I liked that, I like the old timey in the beginning, you have a great range, keep playing with that. You nailed it.

"RE: Stefano"
Posted by cahaya on 04-06-11 at 09:18 PM
Agree with J-Lo that he showed a lot of emotion in that song, but also agree with Randy that it seemed a bit forced at times. It didn't really reach my heart, although it reached my ears. A good performance by Stefano, but relative to what else we've heard and seen tonight, it's only a matter of time before he becomes Idol fodder.

Notice how his dancing was half a step out of rhythm with the two accompanying guitarists? And how his clapping hands was a quarter step off? And the whole thing was a step off - the cliff?

Did not like. No way I could tell this was a Johnny Cash song. This prison song was a crime.

"He shot a song on stage "

just to watch it die.

Imagine three people suffering from the exact same kind of insanity together in a room. They babble. They spasm. No movement they make, nothing they say, nothing they do makes any sense to the outside world. But they understand each other perfectly and enjoy each other's company. And then the youngest one grabbed a guitar and killed a few million people with it.

There are words in the language to describe how hideous that was. Since most of them would be censored off this site, let's just go with 'vomitous note-mangling pile of knee-jerking excrement and the shark fin his hair rode in on'.

I may have been too kind there.

MC throws her bag into the passenger side of the convertible. Time to make that long drive home. Crap, those two slobs will have turned the Shoppe into a pigsty by now.

MC wanders back into the studio. She looks around for someone who just might be unduly concerned with hygiene. Maybe someone who tucks his shirt, never wears the same pair of sneakers twice and has every blade of hair perfectly in place – always.

Having failed to find Seinfeld MC lays eyes on Jacob. Hmmm. This is a new feeling. Housework over sex??? Could she be ready to place value on cleanliness over, . . .over. . .um. . ."godliness" just doesn’t seem to fit here.

Anyway – MC catches Jacob’s eye, long lashes and everything.

“Hey Jake!”

“Hey Ms. MC”

“Want to come back with me to the Antique Shoppe and scrub a few floors?”

Jacob’s eyes brighten up. An opportunity to spend time with Steve and Slash is more than he can handle and if MC wants to call it “scrubbing floors” then who is he to argue?

Jacob jumps into the convertible, in that cool way without opening any doors. Only it’s not really cool, is it?

MC utters a heavy sigh, and drives into the darkness, back to the barren homestead that, until last month, held so many satisfying memories.

I didn't like Haley's rendition of "Piece of My heart."
