I never realized how much range and how hard Sir Elton's songs are to sing until it was the Theme back in what was it Season 3?

*checks what not to sing* Yep season three where 2 out of 9 songs were rated in the single digits (out of 100).

Keep it here until the West Coast's ears stop bleeding.

So, what will the "I'm posting a poll because I get paid in credits for everyone who takes it" be about this week. 10 pretend credits to anyone who guesses the topic correctly.

We're in a dual-layered trap: given what's happened up through now, this is the week when we need a breakout performance -- and the catalog makes it extra-difficult to get one. I don't think we're looking at nine howling travesties and two Death By Ballads, but it does feel like one of those nights that empties liquor cabinets across the country and drives Autotune sales up by twelve percent.

By the way, what kind of credits do you get? 'cause I've been looking for a new level of supposedly-free futility, and I know this site where people argue a lot...

Did you know that song was in EJ's catalog? I'd never heard it before tonight. I wouldn't even suspect that kind of song existed in the original performer's musical vocabulary. But someone knew -- and they pointed Scotty to the arguably one and only composition he wouldn't have to retrofit.

I'm not saying he didn't do a good job with it. He did, even if that last low strike was his idea of Jacob's glory note (and equally misplaced). But there's no way he landed on that song by chance. He was directed.

Well, that or he just read down the title list until he found a suddenly-country-comforting word.

I had never heard of that song before - had anyone? He said in the interview part that he picked it because it had the word "country" in the title. So unless he's lying, he wasn't directed to it.

I'm shocked to be the only one who knows this song. Rod Stewart remade it (quite well!!). The tempo is a LOT different in the original. Scotty took certain liberties with the lyrics as well (aside from the Hi! Grandma!), which I did not care for.

Well they don't often get the full catalog to choose from. It may have been on the list of 20 songs to choose from and they may not have highlighted it on his copy. If the producers put it on the list of 20 they may have really wanted him to know it existed.

They could have shown Scotty a list of three songs they thought would suit him and one had country in the title. I don't think he found it on his own.

Remember in James' segment he said something to Iovine about not changing his selection this week? I think there is a heavy hand on the songs they wind up singing if it is someone they want to be there for awhile.

Having Naima sing a reggae version of an Elton song just helped her out the door imo. Someone did not dissuade her from that choice.

I had never heard of that song before, either. Must have been the flip side of a single, or something to fill in on an album. In any case, it was 'ok', and Scotty did it justice. Hard to judge a song that you've never heard, though, IMHO.

Playing acoustic, steel string next to him, piano in the background, the country man is in town. Randy had it right when he said it was like watching a bonafide concert. Apart from the background chorus now and then which he could have done totally without, perfect performance. I'm going have to go re-rank my season picks because this guy is going far.

I can't watch Scotty without laughing. All his posing and facial expressions just crack me up. He really does think he is something. But I never believe he feels what he is singing. He just makes the creepy faces.

Does the intro with a think somewhat Jamaican accent. And keeps the accent through the singing. I didn't know you could do knee bends that deep with heels on that high.

I kinda liked that, but it could go either way for a lot of people.

I may need the rest of the night to decide if that was brilliant, a horrible mistake, or both. She arguably succeeded in what she wanted to do: she transitioned the song and put her own spin on it while staying true to the general spirit of the original. And in that sense, you could argue for a light touch of genius. But if you think there are enough voters who appreciate a true touch of original and want to hear a little reggae in their show to get her past this week...

So for what she did? Brilliance. For where? Mistake.

Given the backup she had, two electrics, a piano and a chorus and a good stage set, her performance seemed disjointed. Somehow the set, the music, her voice, the song lyrics -- indeed, the whole performance -- didn't mesh. Not to say that she sang badly, it just didn't work as a show piece that would garner votes.

He lost the words. He lost the notes. He said he was going to get high tonight and he lied: he was high when he got here. He's only slightly less drugged than his outfit and based on his body mass, that means he should be dead. He promised it would be a long long time and he managed sixteen subjective years, or just a little longer than that opening EJ clip. And remember when he said he was outside his world? Did anyone see those shots of Mercury today? I spotted his house.

The Worsters vote with tears of joy in their eyes. The rest of us are just in that much pain.

Kinda like his voice on this song, usually I just find his tone weird. Until the chorus. The verse was much better.

R. Quite comfort from Paul. There were a couple things a little pitchy, that quiet soft voice is infectious. J interrupts,

S. We believe, have you been watering that suit, more flowers on it. I love your voice, it is like an album, there is going to be something, but you always tip of the hat and hitting every note I won't like you, I like the character when you don't hit the note.

Well, Rocket Man didn't rock it. Playing acoustic, sticking with his usual tone and within his vocal range, we get a typical and rather ordinary Paul performance. Which pretty much leaves it in the ear of the beholder whether they liked it or not.

Loved it! I could seriously listen to this dude for hours. I think it was Jimmy Iovine who said last week, that out of a million singers you could recognize Paul's voice right away. I couldn't agree more - and it gives me chills at times. I thought there were others that I personally could say that about -- but not so: Eliott Yamin, Jennifer Hudson, David Archuleta...they blend in.

At first, I wondered if the video screen was trying to have her walking out from a sunset or the gates of the underworld. And then I realized it didn't matter because with a little effort, one could lead to the other.

A while back, I had this approximate comment for another singer: 'Listen to that during a long drive and the last thing you'll ever see will be the inside of your eyelids.' She's in the same category. Technically competent here and there, sure, eye candy for some, won't argue, energy, never. The Balladeer runs on rocket fuel made from 100% pure Lite FM.

She rides elevators to let the music give her ideas.

I wouldn't make Hindenberg comparisons until she started to svck. She's a one-trick pony like Scotty is, in that she's staying in her comfort zone. She does manage to hit the notes she needs, but I want her to surprise me, too.

She was singing about not letting the sun go down on her. I decided not to grant her wish.

I want to register her as a Weapon Of Mass Boredom. I want to send her to Libya, give her a microphone, and pick the sleeping armies off the ground. I want her to sing to photons and slow down the speed of light. But almost more than any of that, I want to see a moment on stage where I can almost believe she's not singing in her sleep.

This lady is definitely in a class of her own, and classy at that. Superb voice, rather awesome to watch, really. But at the same time, we know what we're going to get week in, week out from Pia, even if it's close to perfection. It's already clear she won't go do something different that is not her style.

I think she was cast to be the Rachael of the show.

I also think she has a lot more up her sleeves...because I've seen other songs of her on you tube. She's just playing the game.

She already announced she's doing River Deep Mountain High next week...and that's a Tina Turner song that was done by Mercedes and Santana characters on Glee. She'll do it well imo. More Glee like than Tina, but it will still give more personality than we've seen.

She'll be the growth story of AI, now that Thia is gone. (Whew!).

By the way, the theme is rumored to be Rock and Roll Hall of Fame winners songs.

Well, there's no way this guy's gonna to win the thing. But at the same time, he's not inept and he's giving it his best shot. Vocally, he's actually pretty good, but his performances have as a whole been forgettable, including tonight's. Nice touch by him there at the end, though, for the Lady J-Lo.

Just to prove I can review her fairly: up until a point, this was the strongest performance she's had. (That point was the near-screech on 'would have liked to known yooooooou') Overly slow even for this, but fairly melodic and did work with the range of talent she's displayed.

And with that said, goodbye, stupid beyotch. I would have liked to avoid knowing you, and I'd like the introductory period to end already. I've had my free trial period: now let her contestant duration expire...

Oh, and screaming subtext to the performance: 'I'm a princess!' Fine. Go get crowned.

Sweet soft, melodic rendition of this song that fit in nicely with the lyrics - a song that will reveal any weaknesses or pretense. Good performance by Lauren, although I wasn't thrilled by it. Wardrobe could do her a favor, though, by not dressing her with a black curtain to hide her butt.

I wish he would have done, "Crocodile Rock", so he could have shown off the falsettos more and the screaming less. He is very talented, and in my slot for winning, but mostly because I see how popular he is and how he commands the stage.

But I also see he is somewhat overrated, and needs to make sure he doesn't come off as too arrogant in this competition.

Here this guy is, tossing mike stands, walking on pianos, flames going up in the background (looks like production had something to do with that), and dancing all around, up and down, from here to downtown. He did look like he was having fun, and I wasn't sure if the piano on fire was a good omen or not. I do think I James was trying to diss Pepsi in his weird hair spray ramblings, but Ryan had a moment of sheer panic.

I am surprised more people don't like him, though. Maybe it's the Tourette's they can't get past. I think he's freed from it somewhat when he sings. He has so much more talent than the others on the show. I hope AI knows what to do with him to help him after the season is over.

I actually turned away from the TV because there were too many distractions in his performance. This way I could focus just on his voice. The voice was just meh.

One of the networks (NBC?) is airing promos for a singing competition where the judges do not get to see the performance. They can only critique based on what they hear, not what they see. I've been doing a lot of that with AI this year. It really makes a difference.

Just slap that 5678 contestant number on her dress and call her singing contest material. Sure, she's got a nice sweet voice, but I see her as the star attraction on the Disney cruise ship for the kids to listen to.

Full disclosure: when I hear this song, I generally imagine a body being flown back from war. So it took a little work to reconcile that view of the song with Thia's. But -- everyone puts their own spin on things, and she did find an angle she could tackle it from. Still too close to what she's been doing before and all along -- we have a lot of one-note singers this year -- but as with Lauren, she made it work with what she has.

Thia has a beautiful, pitch-perfect voice. BUT, she is very young, is having a hard time connecting with the song choices, and has lost her confidence, so she is flailing like a cod that has been caught and left on the boat out of the water for too long.

I feel bad for her. She is very young, doesn't have the experience that Lauren has, doesn't have the personality or the charisma that the others have, but she DOES have that amazing strong, beautiful voice. But, what do you do with that?

Funny how his health issues never come up when Crystal's medical status was a near-weekly report. (I don't expect the rumors of his relationship with Haley to emerge.)

The word I'll give this one is 'timid'. There was one camera angle which made him look as if Conan O'Brien had gained ten pounds and suffered a concussion. There was never a moment when he stopped sounding like it. I think Casey let the fear take over tonight, and it didn't care enough to stay on pitch.

Huh? We heard about Casey being in the hospital when he didn't make the show; later we heard that he has ulcerative colitis, and then this week he got extra pimpage footage showing his reaction after he was saved and how the doctor attended to him (and yes, that was after your comment). IMO we hear more about his health than we did Crystal's health. Her thing blew over early on IIRC.

R. Casey yo! I'm sure I speak for the judges, one of the greatest saves. That performance, but not lose all of who you are was brilliant, so nice and so tender, well done.

S. concur, finest moment putting you through. The last two notes of that song would get the standing ovation. You sing different every time. I love that about you. shows a true artist.

To be fair, the judging used to be more interesting than half the singing. Seasons and seasons ago. A lot of Coke cups under the bridge, all thrown away before the residue could be tested.

Not a bad performance, if somewhat weak except for a very nice finish (like Steve I liked that part the most). Casey himself looks weak or tired, and it comes out in the pace and tone of his song. At this stage, with some of the others already picking up their musical instruments, I would have imagined him changing tack and singing along with playing the stand-up bass or one of the other instruments he knows how to play, just to get some liveliness and rhythm into his song, which is what I think was missing this week. Will his fan base rally to his rescue? Given tonight's performance, that's probably an open question.

Classic Jacob, and you know he's governing the throttle on his vocal engine in this song. Fine, simple arrangement that simply showcases the song, heavenly to listen to even without the clouds at the feet and the lights from above. Like Pia, though, we can't expect much different from him, as close to perfection as he is. Even so, I like this guy and hope he goes far.

I know Wheeling, IL will be voting for Haley. I saw the signs on Milwaukee Avenue to prove it. But me? Not so much. I'm just not a big fan of the combo screaming/growling. James does it, Casey does it. But it sounds weird coming out of her.

I think putting Haley in the pimp spot was more about making sure others went before her than it was to showcase a good performance.

Naima was already going with the reggae performance...so it was down to who else could they flush out by elevating Haley? Because 95 percent + of the time, the pimp spot insulates the performer from the boot, and we know now it did.

So, it got Thia out and Paul into the b3.
