"Playing It Straight pulled from the air?"

Posted by SurvivorBlows on 03-30-04 at 11:22 AM
I've received a report that the Friday 8PM timeslot has once again claimed another reality show as "Playing It Straight," the first reality show to air in the time period since 2001's "The Mole 2," has been pulled from the airwaves -- anyone else heard anything???

Thanks,
SB

The Hollywood trade papers seem to confirm that Playing it Straight is toast, for now. (you'll need to register to read the whole article, which I can't be bothered to do.)

LAST EDITED ON 03-30-04 AT 02:57 PM (EST)

The full story doesn't say much more -- yes, it's pulled, and apparently what was originally a one-week Wonderfalls/Forever Eden Thursday/Friday swap is now "permanent" -- or at least as "permanent" as a it can be considering that as of this Friday, Eden will now have aired six episodes on four different days.

The only noteworthy part is "Because the skein has a strong competition element, Fox plans on bringing the show back this summer so viewers can find out how the game ends." and a mention that NBC did the same with "Lost" while ABC did it with "The Family"

...no mention of the much better "Mole 2" comparison, two thumbs down to the Variety writer

I am upset that they pulled it. I loved watching it and looked forward to it coming on each friday. Does anyone know anything about Wonderfalls if its still on or not? I think its pretty good to.

I believe Wonderfalls is trading spots with Forever Eden. So it should be on, on Mondays.

Pulled from Fox's message board.

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX is dumping its reality dating series "Playing It Straight," while "Wonderfalls" and "Forever Eden" are swaping time periods permanently beginning this week.

The news comes as little surprise for "Straight," as last Friday's broadcast averaged a paltry 2.1 rating/4 share and 1.3 rating among adults 18-49 according to fast national data. Both those scores would mark the network's worst Friday, 8:00/7:00c time period performance this season should they hold up nationally.

FOX plans to fill the show's time slot with clip shows "Totally Outrageous Behavior" and "World's Craziest Videos" starting on April 2. "Behavior" and "Videos" previously aired for five weeks in said time slot earlier this year.

"Straight" will get the hook after just three weeks on FOX's schedule, a rarity for a reality series. Only a handful of series in the genre - such as ABC's "The Family," NBC's "Lost" and UPN's "Under One Roof" - have gotten shelved mid-run. "Straight" most likely will burn off its remaining installments this summer.

I always thought the time slot was the pits.

Does this affect paying out the $1 million prize money in any way? Just wondering.

These people just don't know who they are messing with. Us gays won't put up with this ##### forever. I hated it when they did this to the Mole 2 also. Why even bother starting something if they aren't going to finish it?

Why not just finish it? Doesn't seem typical of Fox. *Everything* they show in that time slot fares poorly.

That's what I'm thinking too managerr...besides...by the time they do finally finish the run wont everyone have been outed anyway....I mean seriously...do they think the gay guys are gonna stop being gay for several months just because they pulled the show. (not that there's anything wrong with it.. i just love those seinfeld references

I wasn't heavy into the show but it was good fun when really there aint sh*t worth watching on friday's anyway.

I am so bummed!! Don't they know about our GAYME?? I wanted to win something for once in my life!

Do they really think that the show will do better in the summer, after being off the air for 4 months?? what a bunch of morons.

For what's its worth, I put our news story up a couple of hours ago:

http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=2423

I don't get why they are pulling it with three episodes left. ABC pulling Mole 2 made some sense, as it still had 10 episodes to go.

But THREE?!?!? ...coming from the same folks who let Joe Mill 2 limp along in the ratings for ten episodes!?!? In the still-gonna-be-dead-as-a-doornail-anyways Friday timeslot???

...the move makes little sense.

"Eddie's Incident"
Posted by volsfan on 03-30-04 at 05:56 PM
I wonder if this had anything to do with the demise? It was really strange of how they handled his departure and how they didn't show anything from him.

Just curious...what do you guys think?

I doubt it.... the shows were probably filmed and edited weeks ago and if Eddie's lawyer (or something) was telling them to pull the show, they probably would have done it before they aired one episode.

It does seem odd that they would pull it with only 3 episodes left and at the same time talk about airing those eps during the summer. If it's so important to let the public see how the show plays out, why not just let it run its course now? The 3 remaining episodes will air before sweeps start in May. And it's not like there's some urgency for getting "Most Outrageous Behavior" on the air.

Quite strange.

Well, Eddie would have no idea how the editing was gonna go down until it hit the airwaves. I think it was very strange the way they handled Eddie's departure.

I really don't think that Eddie's departure had much to do with the show going off the air. I would really like to know how this affected his teaching job - I certainly hope it wouldn't. Also, I think they should just have left it alone. Those last three weeks could have been a ratings grab if they just advertised it a little more.

Poor ratings?!?!?! That's what they get for pulling Boston Public.
Gotta go get a hair cut.....will post more later.

from the link and the post they say its back in july in a different slot than Friday to maximize younger viewership. good to hear...

That's not an "official" release from FOX, it's the wishful thinking of one of the castmembers who was on the show.

I'll believe FOX is going to "do a big new advertising campaign" when I see it... ya, they'll run house ads on the network for it, but that's because except for The Casino, they are probably going to have nothing else new to promote this summer. I'd be shocked to see any real significant new money spent on new non-network advertising (magazine ads, online ads, etc.) like they did the first time around.

The show was filmed last summer, and it will return for sure in July. I am friends with one of the contestant's husband, and though they haven't told me who wins, I know that he didn't! LOL!
