"FAQ: Why an I getting an 'anonymous email' error trying to register?"

Posted by SurvivorBlows on 03-21-02 at 11:44 PM

We define "anonymous email" addresses as free, web-based email addresses from places like Yahoo!, Hotmail, etc.

Because ANYONE can sign up for an unlimited number of free accounts, we do not allow the use of such services when registering, sorry.

But it does create a problem. If I want to change my signame, I have to register under another paid-for e-mail address. Most Peeps only have one address and I don't know why I would want to pay for several addresses. The answer seems to be simple to me - fix the system so we can change our names if/when we want!!

Um, the whole point is kinda to keep users from having more than one registration -- unless you are screwing around doing something that you shouldn't and generally being a troublemaker, there's little justification for needing more than one registration on the same message board system.

There is nothing to "fix" -- the system is functioning as designed, if you want to change your username then you can request that your account be deleted and then you can re-register a new account using that same email address. Ya you'll lose your DAW count, but oh well... that'a the price you pay for being an indecisive attention whore

That response seemed a little over-aggressive for you! Having a bad day?
Why would I have to delete and reregister? I only want one registration and would like to have the opportunity to change my name if I want. What's wrong with a simple system change to allow sig changes?

With all due respect, I disagree. I thought his response was direct and honest. If you'd seen how many different free email accounts someone like BigBastard (a banned user), for example, had found to register under, perhaps it would make more sense. There are approximately 6000 registered ID's here. If free addresses were allowed, that number would skyrocket as people created multiple accounts. And it would become much simpler for people to register fake ID's to flame someone once and disappear under an assumed identity without fear of losing their "real" ID's.

Webby's right: the system works well as designed. Believe me, this place would be a TON more unpleasant if people could easily register alternate ID's. And if you want to change your ID, Webby offered the solution: delete and create a new one. Sure, it takes a couple extra clicks on your part, but the peace that offers the rest of the community is worth it.

Still disagree. Why can you not find a way to allow us to change our ID's under the same e-mail address?

And you know what, WADR the phrase "screwing around" is not required.

Edited to say: Isn't this a Help Forum? Why would any Moderator adopt that tone?

I subscribe to the theory that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." You think there's a problem, but I don't and I think most others don't. If you were here and saw the problems we went through earlier with numbskulls coming up with dozens of alternate IDs for the sole purpose of creating trouble, you wouldn't have a beef.

Webby put in a good system for a very valid reason -- to not encourage people to screw around with names. He gave you a direct solution and you want to harp on his "attitude"?

Also... if you looked at his first response to you -- the only time he may have sounded 'testy', he immediately followed that with a happy face to indicate that he wasn't being serious in putting you or anyone down -- the "indecisive attention whore" part was a joke.

>And you know what, WADR the phrase "screwing around" is not

Huh, what's wrong with the way he said it? That's exactly what certain people have been doing in the past and it created a lot of problems here with certain other people. He's just telling it like it is.

>Moderator adopt that tone?

He didn't adopt any tone -- you're adopting a tone of your own by trying to criticize his way. I noticed you did the exact same thing on another thread in another board commenting on how Webby types. Get off his case and give him a break -- he's got a ton on his plate and he's doing a heck of a job keeping control of this place -- we don't have the loonies that other places (i.e. SS) are famous for.

Amen to that, Pepe. It really bothered me to know that Webby had alot of stress to deal with when the boards were down, then come back here and see this.

Make that exactly 6,000 now. Congrats, Webby!

Of course, 2,000 of them are BB, Munkey, and the Justice League. You see the problem?

Not really... if anything its more like frustration from what I seem to sense as some perception of "entitlement" on your part and lack of respect for my decision in this matter.

I've explained that's not how the system works. Your method is not how I want it to work. I have good reasons for wanting it to work the way it works. Ways that I've tried to explain it you. I've offered you a simple solution for your situation, yet you insist on insisting the boards need "fixing" and persisting with the issue -- which I take as a slight.

There is nothing to fix, the boards are functioning as intended and designed -- early on a decision was made to focus on security and this is part of that security.

>Still disagree. Why can you not find a way to allow
>us to change our ID's under the same e-mail address?

Why don't you just follow the solution already provided?

There's not going to be any change because it's my prerogative to focus my limited resources in those areas that a) actually have geniune need rather than just a perceived need, b) have priority, c) have urgency. Not only does your request fails on all counts, but I know of no other major user registration system -- not Yahoo!, not MSN, not AOL -- that's let's you on a whim decide to change your username and retain the same user profile. ...and there's a reason for that.

>And you know what, WADR the phrase "screwing around" is not
>required.

I have no idea what the above statement is supposed to mean.

>Why would any Moderator adopt that tone?

I suggest you look at your own comments first, beginning with your insistent claims that our system is broken and your apparent disregard of the simple solution already provided

When I first tried to register here, and then found out I couldn't do it with my hotmail address I will admit I was kind of irked. But then after reading this post and all the comments I think it's a good idea to only allow the emails that are paid for. I remember going to old message boards on other sites and there would be people who would always go get another email address so they could get another account and start problems because no one could figure out who they were. I would have to say that bugged me the most. Anyhoo, I don't think I have a major point to this message, it's my first post on this site. But I did just want to tell you that it's a good idea to keep the punks away. =)

"Slightly different situation/question."

Hi Webby,

Props to all the work you do and I think that your reasons for not allowing hotmail/yahoo accounts is sound. The results speak for themselves.

My question is this. You have above suggested a solution to the person who wanted a new username for no good reason other than for the purpose of changing the name. What about if I change jobs or ISPs and the email address that I used to register changes? It seems that I should always have a valid email address or else the 'email' option won't work. My company is considering changing domain names so my email address may be changed, what happens to my account if this happens?

Thanks
-aethelstan

The User Options include an option to update your email address:

I originally registered from a work e-mail address. I no longer work in that fine establishment (read: fiery pit of hell) and only have a yahoo e-mail address at this time. I have never used outlook express even though I apparently have some sort of e-mail address through comcast, my internet provider.

OK so I have no recollection of ever posting anything here before (I am curious to see if my DAW is 1 or more when I finally send THIS ONE) but this is my question /problem:

I just changed the user preferences to my yahoo e-mail address and now I am worried I will never be able to log on again!

Any help? Does having an "anonymous" e-mail addy delete my registration???

Hmmmmm. I feel quite stooopid at the moment

Hi! Please don't feel stupid. Once you are registered they allow you to change your e-mail, so you should be ok.
