"Dear American Idol"

Dear American Idol,

I don't watch your show, but I hear that this year it is even more like a high school talent show than in years past. Yes, I appreciate that you have helped to make the careers of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and a couple of other awesome artists, but in the process you have served even more prodigious servings of crap (pronounced "Sanjaya") and pretended that it was honestly the best young talent you could discover in your nationwide searches.

Anyway, the reason that I am writing today is to let you know that even though I do not watch your show and I really could not care less about it, I do watch Glee. Rather, I record Glee on my DVR because I actually have a life that oftentimes takes place outside the house. When your producers, judges, miniature host, and "talent" are so incompetent that they cannot even end a one-hour program in, you know, one hour that means that my DVR records the ass-end of your program and stops without recording the conclusion of Glee.

Please kindly end your program in one hour. I have another commitment tonight and will not be home before prime time so I will not be able to tinker with the DVR to record the news that airs after Glee. If I miss the conclusion again, after being very angry and frustrated about not seeing the end of "The Power of Madonna," then I will have to alert the media to that stash of gay porn with Sanjaya's head photoshopped in that Ryan Seacrusty keeps hidden in his dressing room for his special alone time.

Thank you for being considerate tonight.

Sincerely,

You are just lucky that Glee wasn't on after the two hour Idol Gives Back.

It ran over by more than 20 minutes. Ryan even proudly announced the night before that they had no intention what-so-ever of ending the show on time.

Isn't it the Director's job to keep them on time? I'd think it should be somebody's job. Whoever it is, they stink.

I don't get it. Do they think it's cute to run a few minutes over? Do they think they're so important that it's okay to do that? The Idol Gives Back thing was completely ridiculous. There was no need to go over by 20 minutes.

I'm signing your letter, too, HD, even though I do watch Idol.

A Mmmmmmmoonie plate special!

Oh, HD, when did you get so crotchety? Don't you know that American Idol is just a show for rubbernecking voyeurs like me? That it has nothing to do with actually finding talented singers?

Because if the show was actually about quality entertainment and finding the next great singer, the producers would make a greater effort to find good singers instead of showing us 3 - 4 weeks of cr@ppy auditions. The producers would actually limit the number of votes that can come from each phone number in the US to make the results more meaningful, rather than which contestant's fans have the most free time in their lives that enables them to dial for 2 straight hours. The producers would actually hire judges who are not so infantile and insulting to the viewers who watch their show.

I thought HD's problem was that he wasn't going to be home to mess with the buttons, not that he doesn't know how to work around the problem.

I dunno if anyone here lives close enough to break into his house and fix the DVR for him.

ETA: The old DVR softwre I had wouldn't let you do that, you had to record the next show. The newer software from the cable company will do that and added some other features but also got rid of a few things it used to do. (like you could go to the next day without having to scroll through the entire 24 hours, and the find a show thing can be slow as heck and I like to look at what else is on, too).

Go ahead! You'll have a nice conversation with the police once you trip the motion detector. The last time the alarm company dispatched an officer to my residence, she was there in less than three minutes.

I may be an idiot when it comes to setting the DVR, but I sure as hell know how to set the alarm.

The old DVR softwre I had wouldn't let you do that, you had to record the next show.

Yes, I could record the next show. But that means that every Tuesday I have to remember to re-set the DVR for the next show before I leave the house in the morning (and, honestly, thinking about what program I am going to watch in the evening is not usually the first thing on my mind as I try to get out the door in the morning). If I try to re-set the DVR any earlier than the day of the program I have to do all of the scrolling through that you mention. Besides, I should be able to just set the DVR to record the program at a scheduled time and be able to depend on the program airing at that time, not the tail end of the show that was scheduled to be over by the time my program was supposed to begin.

I wish that there was an option to record "News at 10" only on Tuesday nights. That would be an acceptable workaround that would not permanently gobble up a lot of space on my DVR, but my only options are either to remember on that day of the program to set the DVR to record the news OR to set up the DVR to record the news every night at 10 PM. Neither of those really works for me.

The easiest solution? End American Idol at the time it is scheduled to end.

I've usually had some sort of "this day only" as well as a "this time only" setting when setting up a regular program. But I don't know if your software has that, but everything I have has allowed me to do that.

I've done some "this day" and "this time" only for cable shows that tend to be on 45 times a week to make sure it doesn't catch the repeats as sometimes I do want to catch it at the specific time new show or not.

That would be great if my DVR were a Tivo system, but unfortunately it's not.

Well, actually it would be great for after the first time this idiocy took place because I could have learned from experience --- but how was I supposed to anticipate it the first time?

Or should I be setting all of my DVR selections for an additional fifteen minutes (and gobbling up all that space) just in case something might happen sometime?

You know what else might work? Ending the damn program when it is scheduled to end.

How hard is that? Takes sixty minutes to do?

Maybe that is why DWTS is doing so well in the ratings. They can figure out how to end a live show on time.

Idol has a history of going over. Its how i set up my season pass once the top 24 started.

I'm glad you have a season pass with options that are so flexible.

Having never previously watched whatever programs aired after American Idol, how was I supposed to know about its history? Like I said, after the first time I could learn from experience, but I shouldn't have gotten screwed the first time in the first place.

I'm with you History Detective. Just finish the dang show on time. I know it's about money; texting, calling, and advertising, but it still annoys me.

My DD records the 10pm news to avoid missing the end of Glee. If she extends AI then she bumps off something someone else wanted to record.

The joy and curse of a DVR.

thanks Capn2patch

there is little joy in Idol for me

Or they could just cancel AI...

...but that'll have to wait until next year.

Sanjaya's head photoshopped

Oh, yeah, him. And it.

Yup, there's no glee in this season's AI.
