"AI9 Top 7 Performance Show ECST "

Please keep tonight's Inspirational Music Themed show and any deeds it compels you to do on this thread until the show has finished on the West Coast.

Rainbows of magic and songs about heroes
Soaring grand lyrics and tear-jerking prose
Glory notes held 'til their faces turn blue
These are a few of the things they will sing

When the judge fights
When the words sting
When the host goes mad
I simply mute the TV with my remote
And my ears don't feel so bad.

*looks at song list*

Y'know, some of my local bookstores stay open until midnight.

Bars, 2:00 a.m.

Comedy clubs, same.

I'm almost sure Ryan won't show up at any of them.

Maybe Kara's outfit will trigger a localized earthquake. Covering one seat. Hers.

The only hope is Ryan got into the left overs from Paula's sippy cup again.

ETA: At least it is only one hour tonight.

Playing electric guitar. Back up singers on stage.

Is that one back up singer wearing shorts with a train? Maybe it is a mini skirt.

Good as a lead guitarist during the guitar solo.

Randy. It was a good performance, not your best. See the same thing from you. Something a bit more special, something different.

Ellen. Great guitar playing. I have to be tougher. Now someone goes home every week? It wasn't great.

Kara. Jealous Guy was amazing, and it is like jam band. It is not showing us what makes you different. I am frustrated about that.

Simon. That wasn't particularly inspiring. Zero emotion. Sang like the original, lazy song choice.

Typical Casey. His voice and riffs cut through the backup but it's still much the same as he's performed over the last few weeks. Nice performance to open the show with, although it wasn't extraordinary -- nor as Simon mentioned, inspiring. Thumbs up for a pass, but he'll have to up it to gain Idol status.

The Boxer -- Simon and Garfunkle

Paint salesman on the stool interview. Ask about paint colors Ryan, no...just talking about Andrew and Lee's song choice.

And we are going to tape.
We are aren't we.
Tape... now...finally

She wants them to feel like he is that fighter/boxer. Bring people into him.

Quite nice. The singer/songwriter showed in this performance.

eta: forgot the mumbling, mumbled the first few bits. Thanks snidget.

"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 08:18 PM
Well the word mumbles wasn't mumbled. Playing the acoustic guitar.

Piano player and strings on stage. Stamping to some of the lyrics in the second verse to indicate emotion.

Randy. You may not realize it, I am one of your biggest fans. You are a great artist and will have a big career.

Ellen. Beautiful song choice. So much soul and depth to you. Better and better from you. Best performance by far.

Kara. I think you had your moment tonight. I think it shows clearly when someone is connected and when they aren't. Keep picking things you are connected to.

Simon. Best of the night, but early to say that. Difference between you and the first performance was staggering. You made it sound like it was written a week ago.

"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by kingfish on 04-20-10 at 08:24 PM
Nice. The Boxer. I sang along, so that has to be some endorsement. But the Boxer? Another lazy easy to sing safe song. If they have to to do Simon and Garfunkle, please do some of Garfunkle solos, they take decent vocal chops to do right.

And will someone please shut Kara up? Her "and one more thing..."s drive me nuts. Really, Ellen is actually becoming the only one with something original (sort of) to say.

Not bad. Good arrangement to back the vocals and A-key capo acoustic. I wasn't bowled over by this performance like the judges were -- he still looks uncomfortable on stage in spite of his good sound -- but he'll pass this week as he looks forward to being a contender. Idol? Still remains to be seen -- and heard.

"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by Estee on 04-20-10 at 08:21 PM
La-la-la-di-da -- but that's mostly due to the band. The instrumental portion of the song suffered. Those strike notes are supposed to be powerful, and they came across as muted here. I'd have an easier time judging Lee if I could separate his singing from the horrible backup -- and right now, I can't.

Boring, uninspired, blah (shall I quit now?). So far Tim is on the bubble, IMO.

"RE: Tim Urban"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 08:27 PM
Playing acoustic guitar. Strings on stage.

Good job. When he picks the right song he can sing it.

Randy. For me interesting choice, was just kinda OK, didn't do anything with it. Sounded OK.

ellen. Soup of the day. Some days I like it but today I didn't like the soup.

Kara. Found your line, a new Tim from where we re used to. Sometimes sound commercial. not your best.

Simon. If this was the first time we'd be quite impressed. I'm finding it difficult to believe this. May have been a step too high. Having said that, you have improved over the weeks. A little bit of a let down.

"RE: Tim Urban"
Posted by Estee on 04-20-10 at 08:29 PM
No. This song is about as close to a shout of hope as mainstream radio play gets: if you don't give it the vocal power to match that building backbeat, you're a whimper of 'please don't kill me' in the shadows. Not enough there for these lyrics -- but VFTW should still have their better day.

"RE: Tim Urban"
Posted by cahaya on 04-20-10 at 08:29 PM
Another acoustic with the capo on A. Maybe Tim will melt the hearts of the tweens, but I was left wondering just what his song was about. Not bad, I guess, as a Tim song, and he'll probably pass this week depending on how the remaining contestants perform tonight. He's been a surprise the last couple of weeks, but not this week.

Funny you say that, as amongst the many songs I've heard (being a music freak) this season, this is one I don't think I've heard the original.

(eta) Good song, really. Interesting performance here on youtube.

You hear it fairly often at Christmas, as it's definitely carrying more than a touch of that theme. One of the very few I can remotely stand during the holiday and a welcome treat at any other point in the year.

Strings stay on stage again.

Revenge of the sway bots in the audience.

Randy. Yo. Picked a giant song. Arrangement was funny, you have a huge voice and pure vocal talent. Good job.

Ellen. A time in the 70's I believed I can fly. you have a big voice and a tough song.

Kara. That was like taking off then it got somewhere down the runway and by the end you were flying.

Simon. Have to judge this in two parts. You and the guts to take it on and gave it your all. And if we heard that on the radio I would have turned it off. It wasn't good, but you made it good.

"RE: Aaron Kelly"

Gotta go with Simon here. I'd switch the dial hearing this, yet I'm impressed Aaron managed a huge song like this in his youth. Dunno if he'll attract more voters with his performance, but he's still in the game, flying by the seat of his pants.

"RE: Aaron Kelly"
Posted by kingfish on 04-20-10 at 08:36 PM
I agree with Simon. Not Good. Aaron has (IMO) no depth, nothing individual about him. And in contrast to Randy, I don't see much more than ordinary vocal talent.

(Booooo!...Boooooo!)

(What? Why are they booing me?)

"Siobhan Magnus"

When you Believe – Mariah and Whitney from the Prince of Egypt

Ryan makes Simon help him host.

Alicia tells her that one high not is her money spot. Take a pause there. She is impressed.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 08:41 PM
The strings are glued onto the stage and will not leave.

Much better than she has been doing the last few weeks.

Randy. I just wanna say you picked the toughest song of the night. I don't know how you picked it. It was just OK.

Ellen. More confirmation why you are here.

Kara. Technically well sung. It is not a musical and it started to feel dramatic. I'd want to hang out with you more than buy your record.

Simon. Arrangement old fashioned. The leaves distracted me, they are butterflies. A bit odd. A shame.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by kingfish on 04-20-10 at 08:45 PM
Best so far, but the bar is very low tonite. Can't deny her vocal talent. She seems like one who might have a Broadway career possibly in her future. And, for those complaining about her loud sustained notes, she had softer sustained notes that were actually very pretty tonite.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by zazzy on 04-20-10 at 08:55 PM
Wow, they don't want her, do they? That was so much better than she was given credit for.

Lee--over pimped.

Siobhan--you must be threatening their agenda.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"

Siobhan--you must be threatening their agenda.

So it is, so she is. I'm a fan of hers hoping for more eclectic performances, yet I think this is what they want least.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by Tummy on 04-21-10 at 08:59 AM
Ditto.

It seems they're critiquing her so much more harshly than they critique, to name a few, Casey, Aaron, Mike, Tim.....
Or maybe it's just me and they raise my hackles when they're picking on my girl week after week.

Though I don't think Lee was 'over-pimped', I do think the judges have been really hard on Siobhan in the past few weeks! What is up with that? The girl can't catch a break with them!!

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by Estee on 04-20-10 at 08:45 PM
Welcome to the Bottom 3.

Not that she necessarily deserves to be there. I just think that at this point, it's inevitable. Siobhan's approaching her departure time, and this is the point where they start calling her to the gate.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by cahaya on 04-20-10 at 08:45 PM
It's make it or break it for Siobhan and I get the impression she's about to crumble. I hear it in her song and I hear it afterward when she comments on her performance. She's good, no doubt, but she'll need to change up into something a little more extraordinary if she is to be the Idol.

"Do I need to clean out my ears"

Or is the judging really only about the pimping more than usual tonight?

They want Casey, Siobhan and Tim gone
They want Lee and Aaron to hang on.

Crystal and Michael and Timmeh and Lee
Aaron, Siobhan and, yes, Casey

Will all try to impress us with singing
Who will get pimp-ed or will get dinged?

When they gush over Lee
When they trash Casey
When Simon is an a$$
I simply come to Snidget's thread
And blow off steam here instead

"Michael Lynche"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 08:48 PM
Michael gets a coke stool of doom interview.

He had a play book made of songs he'd sing if he got on the show.

Hero – Chad Kroeger feat. Josey Scott

"RE: Michael Lynche"

He does much better without the guitar.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by cahaya on 04-20-10 at 08:53 PM
Yeah, he doesn't really need to play it. With his voice, the open standard tuning acoustic could be left to a band player.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 08:51 PM
More strings on the stage.
Playing the acoustic guitar.
Bouncing up and down with a bobble head for choreography.

Randy. Yo yo. I was worried, band songs about music, not vocals, it worked out.

Ellen. I thought you did a great job.

Kara. Not my favorite performance, don't' have the tone and it was unrecognizable.

Simon. Sang it pretty well. The theme is inspiration and that was about spiderman. Felt artificial. Didn't gel. you will be around next week.

"I'm shocked."

"RE: Michael Lynche"

It's all up to Crystal to save the night.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by zazzy on 04-20-10 at 09:01 PM
He'll be around next week because they probably don't boot anyone tomorrow after scaring them about whether they are b2 or not.

And Michael got a near pimp tonight so pimp spot next week?

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by Estee on 04-20-10 at 08:54 PM
I think that was his entire Idol career in one song. High moments, low moments, surprises and 'what the bloody hell is he doing?', all in about eighty seconds.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by cahaya on 04-20-10 at 08:55 PM
Pretty good, although he didn't really need to be playing the acoustic and the lighting didn't match up with the song very well. Still... his vocals came through loud and clear and he showed that he too can be a hero. Thumbs up, although it perhaps wasn't his best performance this season.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by zazzy on 04-20-10 at 09:00 PM
I don't disagree but I would rather hear him sing R&B than how he sang this. I don't think anthemic songs are his thing.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by cahaya on 04-20-10 at 09:35 PM
I'm with you on rather hearing him sing R&B (particularly the old style R&B). I think he'd be a lot better with this, even if it's not 'contemporary' by the judges' standard. I get the feeling he's trying to please the judges at his own expense.

Ok, about what I expected from Crystal. Great voice, spot on arrangement, but I still felt she gave us more of the same of what she has to offer. Thumbs up for a clear favorite, yet I still have higher expectations of what she can do.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"
Posted by Snidget on 04-20-10 at 09:00 PM
Starts off A Capella.
Strings on stage and background singers.

Best of the night, actually better than what that implies given the rest of them. Voice breaks and she cries the last note.

Randy. Standing ovation. fan since day one.

Ellen. Never looked more bueatiful. Evolving and growing. She got her mic stand from home.

Kara. Thank you for taking a risk. Mama-sox you just schooled lal those contestants.

Simon. That was inspirational. In a strange way happy to see you emotional. you have closed down. this meant a lot to you and you sang it fantastically, a different class.

Dad in the audienc.

Wow. Pimpage or not, Crystal is just heads and shoulders above the rest.

It's like AI allowed a ringer in this year, that was just a real memorable, professional, and heartfelt performance. Could not have been a better song choice, but regardless of that, she nailed it superbly. I had been thinking "Janis" when I thought of who she was as good as. Now I'm thinking "'retha".

I felt her tears.

(And, BTW, Alicia Keyes is very....I'd like to....well, I better leave that alone. Just that I understand the MC and Casey thing).
