"AI9 Top Eight 9 Performance Show ECST"
Posted by Snidget on 04-13-10 at 06:02 PM
Please keep all discussion of tonight's performances, filler, and mentor packages on this thread and this thread only until the West Coast finishes shaking from the New Madrid fault setting off the San Andreas fault from what I show I believe will get Elvis spinning in his grave and they have had a chance to decide for themselves if this is the moment that AI officially Jumps the Shark or jumps up and down on the shark or whatever. If you want to help me protest AI becoming a homeless shelter for also rans of AI past join in VFTW and for for Timmeh like your life depends on it, or at least toss him a couple of votes to thank me for hosting this thing I dread.
Because when the producers are launching a show over a shark in a blaze of bat-carp glory the only reasonable response is to stand there with a bemused and silly grin on your face no matter what they throw at you.

Or you could just play the over/under drinking game, in which you try to figure out how they're going to cram nine singers, four judges, one talkative mentor, two hundred Swaybots, three mandatory Coke interviews, and Ryan's testosterone exertions into eighty-eight minutes. If you give up after two seconds and head off to find a drink, you win!

Just keep the alcoholic slushy machine away from Estee. She wants to kill it.Daiquiri please. First choice, banana or peach, if not either of those, then Strawberry.

Banana and strawberry, and I actually have enough blueberries and raspberries to make an interesting combo daiquiri, too! Some mini tacos...guac...chips...dip...we're ready!

I call BS on Ryan's saying Adam was the first contestant to come back and mentor....because Michael and Carly did it last year, only AI never showed what they did.So Adam's the first that they *showed*.
Did you all see the Ken Warwick interview with Slezak where Ken admitted that Adam is struggling?

Electric guitar and back up singers on stage.Gospel/bluesy feel to it, which is not unexpected, but done well.
Randy. Crystal yo man. Listen I say this like a broken record. Had energy it was dope. blues cool second coming of Bonnie Raitt.
Ellen. Any birthedays? Fantastic.
Kara. Another solid performance, lyrics were controversial, drama with the arrangement.
Simon. That was a lyric I could relate to. Missed the Used to. You didn't choose an obvious song. It suited you and you didn't fall into the karaoke track. Original, sounded great.

LAST EDITED ON 04-13-10 AT 08:17 PM (EST)Great performance. I love the original and I liked the way Crystal arranged and sang this. Her voice is powerful enough to be heard over the band and chorus singers, and the switch-up towards the end built some good suspense to finish the song. I haven't been on the Crystal Kool-Aid for most of the season, but this time both thumbs up.

Hound Dog.

Please no more massive wallet chains made with chromed boat anchors.Walks with the mic stand.
Slow kinda jazzy version and walks to behind the judges with the mic and stand.
Randy. Man do they have the audience loud tonight. That was not good karaoke didn't get it at all. This is Elvis. Oh.
Ellen. Liked how much you changed it and liked how you pulled it off.
Kara.. It's Elvis you gotta own it. The mic was your crutch rather than opening up. Wanted more swagger.
Simon. I agree, lazy unpredictable. There is the one part in a musical no one wants. No star performance. All of your coolness sucked out of you. I'm sorry, I didn't get it.
"RE: Andrew Garcia"
Posted by whimsey on 04-13-10 at 08:23 PM
I'm kinda embarrassed for him.
"RE: Andrew Garcia"
Posted by cahaya on 04-13-10 at 08:23 PM
Hound dog on stage. Andrew's limits in vocal range and variety show here, especially given the light although rhythmic arrangement. Having said that, it looked like he gave it his best try, probably as good as we'll ever hear from him, but even that won't make him safe this week.

Andrew is in serious need of lessons from Adam in eclat-ness. The perfect mentor at the perfect moment, and nothing happens. Too bad.Cool, lazy performance, lazy song choice (how can anyone sing Hound Dog and not make it sound Karaoke?)

Ryan's Mom in the audience. Can't Help Falling In Love
Adam liked him and the guitar work. He thinks it is pretty. Wants him to stay up the octave at the end.
"RE: Tim Urban"
Posted by Snidget on 04-13-10 at 08:32 PM
Ryan called him Turban. On a stool dim blue light. Odd phrasing for the first line or two.
Ryan is slow dancing with some bear of a guy.
Nice guitar work on that.
Was behind the judges for that as well.
Randy. I actually liked it.
Ellen. The first time I took a shot of tequila and then I took more and really enjoyed it. I can't help falling in love with you.
Kara. My favorite Tim performance ever. Authentic, real, from your heart and current. It was that meaningful. Well done.
Simon. Did I see Ryan dancing? You have managed to go from zero to hero in two weeks. Clean arrangement, growing in confidence, taken our advice.
"RE: Tim Urban"

His is one case I think Adam's mentoring had an effect in raising his game.
"RE: Tim Urban"

Way too sappy for me. I can imagine someone singing this at a wedding reception or high school prom in just this way. For Tim, though, this is where his zone lies and he did it just right for him - and apparently, to my surprise, the judges.
"RE: Tim Urban"
Posted by jbug on 04-13-10 at 08:48 PM
I thought that was very boring.
Elvis sang with a very powerful voice;

Playing Acoustic Guitar.Lots of growl in the voice, but no bagpipes.
Randy. Check it out. What is in my mind, you were in the zone, amazing. Love the rhythm stuff where your voice is.
Ellen. Sounded like a brand new song, more conficence you owned that stage.
Kara. Ever see you go for it vocally, changing it up with intensity. You get very serious, more playful.
Simon. Simon says more passion, you don't need to skip. Kara will not shut up. About nailing the song. Full stop.
"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by mtb002 on 04-13-10 at 11:42 PM
I don't know why Adam and Kara kept saying playful when they meant sexy. It's Elvis singing about trying to get laid. They want him to relax, smirk and borrow some of Casey's eye action. And if anyone can teach you how to do smoldering eyes, its Adam. Fine performance, but a bit of a wasted opportunity.
"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by cahaya on 04-13-10 at 08:42 PM
Best I can recall hearing from Lee. Liked the arrangement, the guitar play was really good (see those switch-up slides?), and the raspy energetic voice seems to suit him. He still looks like he's not sure he belongs on the stage (sort of that questioning look), but nice sound. One more case, I think, Adam's mentoring made a difference.

He's their ringer. He'll *magically* develop confidence and showmanship as the season unfolds. By Top 5 they'll be pounding the table for him so he'll edge someone else out of the top 4.Dude has two albums out with supporting videos pre idol.
He's not the unconfident guy we're being sold so far.
"RE: *shrug*"
Posted by cahaya on 04-13-10 at 09:37 PM
He's not the unconfident guy we're being sold so far. If he's playing the part, he's doing a good job of it. His body language shows unease, but that's maybe part of just who he is. Just listening to him might be a different experience than actually watching him, as is the case for many artists (some of whom are the other way around, great to watch in spite of not having the best vocals).

Blue Suede Shoes. Adam says he underestimated him. Says Aaron doesn't believe in himself.

Adam is going by a script.I'll summarize key takeaways from Adam's mentoring...
Andrew = boring
Lee = complimentary...have to rewind to get it
Tim = "pretty"
Etc.

Comes down the side stairs.Goes down to sing to the judges, then around the behind the judge stand. Changes up the tempo at the end and goes back to the stage.
Randy. Why did you say this doesn't fit you. The booze lyric. Randy liked the second half tempo with him.
Ellen. Of all songs to pick, the most iconic, big song to take on. Did a good job, didn't get all the way there.
Kara. You are out of your comfort zone and I like it. Seemed younger, and the nerves pushed you. It felt more current and young.
Simon. I don't think it made you younger, did the opposite. It was what it was. Someone at a high school there is nothing wrong with that in that context. Very karaoke, you failed to be original and dressed up for the part.

Have the judges gotten off the Aaron train and exchanged him for the Tim train? And Ryan wishing him "the best of luck". They sound ready for him to go.

Butchered the song. An easy song and he butchered it. A few nice moments, but mostly bad, like he got drunk in a bar and tried to sing Elvis. And what a horrible choice, you can't listen to almost anyone else sing that song and not hear Carl Perkins or Elvis. Adam might have made it his song, but few others could.
He's an easy pick for going home.

To listen to Kara say 'You're out of your comfort zone and I like it' is to file a sexual harassment suit on Aaron's behalf.I felt like he was trying, but -- he fought the song and the song won.

Like Randy, I'm half-half about many things in Aaron's performance, including the switch-up midway in the song that made me wonder which half I'm supposed to get into. The vocals where ok, he had some swagger, had some connection. Half-half, I'll go neither thumbs up or down with this performance.

Wow. I have not been watching much at all this season. I can see why. Huge mistake in having Adam Lambert mentor. He just highlights the lack of charisma, stage presence and most of all vocal quality that this season has. I will say the girl that went first was phenomonal though. One of the best female performances I have seen on AI. The guy wiht the helmet hair who did "Can't Help Fallin' In Love" was good too. It's just that song has been covered to death by people.

Adam is there to further AI's agenda for the contestants and for him. I posted a link to Warwick's comment in an earlier post. AI wants America to see the contestants in a certain way. Adam is a willing ally.

Sitting next to Adam as we go to break.Gets a coke stool interview. Did a report on Elvis in the sixth grade.
He said it felt sleepy, he had it pick up the tempo. She gushes at him and he is complimented that she is compared to him.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"

Starts on the stairs of doom facing away from the audience. Then turns and walks down stage.Keeps the up tempo version then slows down half way through. Screams with knee bends.
Liked the up tempo part much better, should have stuck with that, IMO.
Randy. took some risks, I kinda like the Supreme-ish, the slower part where you came alive and where the big vocal was.
Ellen, liked the second half, and I miss that from you.
Kara, She has two voices and it is confusing for me. Wasn't crazy about it. I love the second voice.
Simon. Like you were put in a time machine. This is a different person. Thought the first part was terrible. Didn't quite hit, erratic and screechy. Lost who you were. Not one of your best performances.
Oh she looks like she could cut a b!tch.
Simon says she needs to pick a song that suits her. She talks back saying she isn't just one kind of singer, and she can't label herself.

"RE: Siobhan Magnus"
Posted by cahaya on 04-13-10 at 09:00 PM
I've been a Siobhan fan all season and came away a little disappointed. Dressed in white and doing her usual ramp-it-up softly up to the screaming-loud notes, I thought it looked and sounded vanilla. There's been some speculation about her being voted out on a dual-boot off-night and this could be it, as much as I hope otherwise. She needs to take a different song route given another chance.

LAST EDITED ON 04-13-10 AT 09:02 PM (EST)Great voice, uneven kinda flat performance. Hope she stays though, when she hits on all eight cylinders she can be magnificent.

As with Andrew on Sugar We're Going Down, I can't fairly review that. She took on my favorite Elvis song: anything she did with it was going to come off poorly in comparison to the original. So I'll just agree that she picked a great look for the night, and her answer to Simon was just about perfect for his statement. Siobhan will not be locked in one of Kara's little labeled boxes -- and ultimately, that'll be what takes her out.

Pimps Idol's Give Back. The real stars will be in another venue. Darn, I wanted Brian to MC that, but I can live with Queen Latifa. In the Ghetto. Siobhan told him to do this one.
Adam think he deserves to go to the end.

Playing acoustic guitar. Sitting on the steps leading down to the in front of the judges stage bit.Singing a slowed down version (or I don't remember it being this slow)
Randy. Hot vocals a little sleepy
Ellen. I'm glad we saved you.
Kara. Beautiful son and you sang it well.
Simon. Terrific choice of song. Billion times better than last week.
Adam tried to get a standing ovation going.

I'd never heard that song before tonight -- which meant it was easier to associate it with his performance than any idea of Elvis. It felt like he lost a beat of his control on the last words, but... wow. First the judges saved him, then Siobhan arguably took a part in saving the person who might bump her out, and then Michael went out and saved himself.

Very, very nice, he sent a chill down my spine. Amazing how big a voice this guy has, yet can sing a touching, soulful ballad like this. Not what I expected, but I'm pleasantly surprised.
"RE: Michael Lynche"

Great vocals, fakey guitar accompaniment (I mean really, if all you can do is a few bar chords, let the band and some studio musician do it, and let him jazz it up with a few filler licks), but his voice was enough to make it a nice performance. I think... I dozed off in the middle, so I'm sort of assuming.

Performance: uncertain and just a touch on the yelling side.Song choice: about as good a 'fight the judges' as we've ever had.
Outfit: take it backstage and burn it.
Customer: burn that too.

Comes out from the screen with black and red graphics all over it.Goes down ont hte lower stage in front of the judges. Goes over by the brass players playing on the stage.
Somehow I just don't get authenticity with the anger in the song.
Randy. Getting sassy. Nice vocals. That was entertaining.
Ellen. A very horny song. A lot of horns in it. Man you can sing.
Kara. you should us judges. Good job.
Simon. I found it loud and annoying. I didn't like the song (Kara can't stop talking).

Fast rhythm, loud wind instrument backup, movement on the stage, and a fairly good but not really strong voice, she did ok. I didn't care for those Asian-Indian style horizontal head movements and some of the facial expressions, so she probably sounded better than she looked. She might actually make it through, although I'm ambivalent about it.

On the platform surrounded by sway bots. Playing acoustic guitar.Back up singers on the side stairs.
He almost controlled the goat vibrato.
Randy. In the zone, solid but nothing different.
Ellen. Love your voice, look comfortable surrounded by a sea of women. Always good.
Kara. We know what you are capable of and that fell short.
Simon. A wasted opportunity, forgettable but your vocal was good.

Looks like he tried too hard in the pimp spot, nearly lost his voice a few times during the performance. As a whole, it didn't mesh as well as it could have, with the potential of being worthy of but falling short of a rock performance. He'll pass.
