that completely butering, mangeling, and otherwise murdering a classic or non-classic song is not ABOUT MAKING IT YOUR OWN!!

When David Cook showed the world how to turn an amazing, classic song, like "Billy Jean" 'his own', he did not, by one iota, make the world cringe and crawl behind their couches! He made us scream, jump up and down and say "YES, INDEED!!!".

I can't even wrap my mind around what the heck Didi and Tim have been thinking over the past few weeks. Especially last night with that rendition of "You're No Good"??? WTH?

I thought I had stumbled onto some Las Vegas/porno/karaoke night two-4-one special at 'actuality' TV. It was the most horrible thing I have ever experienced in my life-and I have had 3 spinal fusions and a recent rotator cuff surgery! OUCH!

Seriously, I was reaching for my pain meds by the second verse...

And Tim? I've already expressed how he butchered 'Under My Thumb' and put it 'Under My Skin' last week. WHO is mentoring these people, and do they NOT see how incredibly stupid they are looking?

I don't think they're going to be invited to Mylie C's next birthday party, no not indeedeee.

Thank you, God, for Crystal, who is just Crystal. And thank you God for DVR's!

/porno/

On behalf of the entire industry: I am so insulted right now.

That was just cruel.

Yes. David Cook presented "fresh" or "current" versions of old classics...helped by his knowledge of music and you tube. He probably had someone scoping out youtube for him and sending him suggestions. One of his brothers, perhaps? Or someone from his band?

Have none of the contestants except Siobvan and Crystal figured that out? I only saw snippets of last night's show but IIRC, Randy acknowledged Katie's singing Pink's version of whatever she sang. So Katie has a clue.

I think almost all of the "made it your own" versions closely resemble something on youtube. (adam and kris had a few).

I don't know why more of them don't do that. Completely reworking song in the amount of time they have (as they don't have the whole week to work on the song) is unlikely.

Finding a version that suits you that you can then make a couple of changes to, especially if the band can use the youtube to work out their bits makes a lot of sense.

I mean somethings are fairly easy changes but having a template to work from saves so much time and they don't have a lot of it.

I will say even being able to pick the right youtube version can take knowing yourself and what you can do, and what will work on the stage is something a lot of people may not have the skill set for. The people that have been spending some time in a cover band playing bars can probably do that a lot better than someone with less experience.

I don't have a problem with you tube covers at all (esp bc of time constraints)--Cookie's Hello was an Incubus cover. Cookie was very good at it but he didn't "make it his own" he covered someone else.

I think finding a youtube cover of the song and using it is perfectly acceptable.

I just find it funny that the judges act like it is something completely new that no one ever did before. No one on Idol has the time to get a complete rework of a song done and written out for the band and all that with the ford videos and the shopping and the all the other stuff that goes into being on Idol.

I know how long it took to do a couple of lines of music in my theory classes. To do a minute or two, from scratch, with new harmonies and rhythms and make it sound good and polished, in a week? If I had nothing else to do and we began rehearsals at the END of the week, maybe. Takes much less time to listen to what someone already did and transcribe and learn that.

I mean really they probably have but a few hours of the band's time at best during an idol week and they have to take time to learn new songs (unless it was like this week and people did songs that were done to death and didn't do anything with them) and learn new arrangements and all that...anyway

I think it does take a lot to know who you are and what sounds good with your voice in picking which of any number of youtube covers to use. People who've been performing and doing covers already are going to be a lot better at it than someone who doesn't have much, if any, experience, or just sings to karaoke backing track types of things.
