Read on MJsbigblog that Paige still has no voice. Even if she recovers and sings...I'm wondering if there may not be any elimination tomorrow and then AI will do two next week. After they do a huge build up, of course. They have three acts for tomorrow night to fill up the show: David Cook singing Jumpin' Jack Flash, Kesha singing Blah, Blah, Blah, and Orianth singing her hit.

Poor Paige. I hope she's able to continue. It would really be bad for her to have to drop out because of laryngitis!

Video package of back home. Mom got sick and died, music saved him during that time.

“Miss You”

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by whimsey on 03-16-10 at 07:09 PM
If Curtis Mayfield did "miss you" this is what it would sound like. Very entertaining

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by Snidget on 03-16-10 at 07:10 PM
starts out falsetto. R&B with some Michael Jackson woo hoo sort of things.

No knee squats but does this wide legged sea lion move.

Randy. time to knock it out of the box. Been good every week. Wasn't crazy with the arrangement but you slayed it.

Ellen. What's not to love. At some point I'll be disappointed but not yet.

Kara. First night big stage. Have to fill up the stage. Stones were great performers. You delivered that tonight. Conveying the message and being hot on stage and you did that.

Simon. Confidence up. If I am being honest I thought the dancing was corny. You sang it well, but when you watch it back it was verging on a tiny bit desperate.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by jbug on 03-16-10 at 07:22 PM
I said the same thing about his 'moves' before Simon did;
however, I love his voice.
If they had not said it was a Rolling Stones song I would not have recognized it tho

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by cahaya on 03-16-10 at 07:12 PM
Ho-hum generic arrangement (really, this one could kick 'a'), but his vocals come right through. He still owns the stage.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by Estee on 03-16-10 at 07:13 PM
I'm surprised one of the judges didn't say this: with so many of the other contestants still working out their stage identities, Michael knows exactly who he is. Accept him if you want to, America -- this is what you get, and I don't think he's interested in changing for you.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by Loree on 03-16-10 at 07:14 PM
I giggled at Big Mike at first the way he was bopping around the stage. Then I got over my giggles and got a little bored. He would probably be popular on a cruise ship though.

"RE: Michael Lynche"
Posted by BriarRosie on 03-16-10 at 07:23 PM
Walrus dancing aside, I still think he did a good job on the vocals.

"Didi Benami"
Posted by Snidget on 03-16-10 at 07:17 PM
Gets an interview on the coke stools of doom.

Mom can't watch her perform, and she doesn't want to see her get judged. She's the middle child. Mom living in LA for the duration.

"Play with Fire"

"RE: Didi Benami"
Posted by Snidget on 03-16-10 at 07:21 PM
Starts on the bottom step of the stairs.

Did she have a lyrics glitch with the second verse, started strong but didn't seem to finish well.

Randy. Got one of the greatest band. What song you going to pick. I think for the first time in weeks you are on fire.

Ellen. you lost your way but you got it right back. Made fire two syllables. Ger-ate.

Kara When you push you lose your way. Intensity and that is what the lyrics about and you went dark. Two steps in the right direction.

Simon. What I like is you are beginning to show us the artist. Thought you were going to lose it. I've been a fan of your the last couple of weeks. Solid but you can do better than that.

Is it just me, or was her video kind of unflattering? Mom talking about her as a screaming baby took up most of the clip.
That combined with the #2 spot - (4 out of 12 singers who went second so far this season have been eliminated)... might not be great for Didi.
Hope I'm wrong, because I really like her performance tonight

"RE: Didi Benami"

I think she gave a good, understated performance.

"RE: Didi Benami"

Stepping down from the cruise ship stairs...

Ok, good performance from her, passable even, but where was the Stones sound?

"RE: Didi Benami"
Posted by Loree on 03-16-10 at 07:23 PM
Kind of a real up and down performance. Parts of it I really liked and other times she lost it.

"RE: Didi Benami"
Posted by Estee on 03-16-10 at 07:30 PM
Improved -- but I don't know what her chances are of picking up extra voters: at this point, the major camps may be just about set, and the undecideds may be a very small part of the voting population.

Even so, maybe everyone should room with Siobhan for a week.

Rock a billy with the electric guitar. A lot of strumming with the other hand completely off the guitar.

Like this better than I usually do.

Randy. Excited. Back to the Casey that I love. You could bluesy rocky you are back for me.

Ellen. I think for most women their hearts will race looking at you. For people like me, blonds, I thought it was fantastic.

Kara. I think I said you were trying to be a rock star. Tonight you were a rock star. For you to pick this song, has blues and soul. This shows your soul and riff the best parts of your voice. Best performance so far.

Simon. Don't agree. Look great, played it well. That was an audition and not using this as a platfrom. Need to push yourself. Has to be more than that. Good artist people will like you. There has to be more. Be a star.

"RE: Casey James"

As one of the better of the top twelve, he performed well, but Mick he ain't. As good as his vocals and guitar play were, he still sounded like an imitation of the real thing.

String quartet on stage.

Can the girl hold a note for any length time? Sitting on the steps half way through. But now she can hold the notes for longer.

Way too Betty Boop for me

Randy. Interesting arrangement. Pleasantly surprised. You kinda held it together. Most interesting of the night.

Ellen. Slow part standing and you like to sit on the edge of things. I would have seen you standing for the energetic part. A bit sleepy for me.

Kara. 50-50 your voice clear is great but there were some issues didn't hit the notes right. You can do better. Like the drama, could have put more into it.

Simon. You perform like an actress. Very precise. Very thought through. Nothing wrong with the vocals. Got to stop over-thinking. You are in danger of doing the same thing week after week.

The right arrangement for her vocal abilities, but not so sure this is the right arrangement for the song. She did ok, but it wasn't a memorable performance. She needs to break out soon or she'll be out soon.

"RE: Andrew Garcia"

Ok, so he only sings girly songs because he really can't do masculine? Got a little better at the end, maybe

Randy. You know I love you. I love the song, I love you. It was just pitchy everywhere.

Ellen. I think that was your best performance, yet. I loved it.

Kara. Elements where we hear the tone we've been missing. It is a song about war, I wanted to feel that from you, but most of the time I didn't. Connection bothered me the most.

Simon. Taking it so literally. To be honest somewhere in the middle. You were better in rehearsal. Something didn't connect. So much mixed criticism. I hope you survive another week.

Could his mother have been any more bored during the backstory cell? Did they have eyelid props on standby in case it somehow happened?

As for the song: do not listen to while operating heavy machinery. I hate that he's getting automatic votes at this stage with no regard for the performance because if people were casting based on quality, he'd need a massive svckfest from the rest of the field not to be Bottom Three. As-is? Coasting on zero momentum. And that's hard to do.

"RE: Katie Stevens"

Starts on the stool, and seems to start way too low. Stands up and gets louder. Glory note was accomplished.

Randy. Lot of misdirection. Great song, sing it well all good all the time. Some pitch things but you corrected it.

Ellen. I almost wore that. I thought it started pitchy sounded amazing once you got into it. Great song. good choice.

Kara. It is never technically perfect with you. Made some nice variations and better than last week.

Simon. Only week where you've chosen a strong song. Clever choice. Susan Boyle pimp. didn't like the second half as you lost the emotion. First time you connected with the song and gave it 100%

"RE: Katie Stevens"
Posted by cahaya on 03-16-10 at 08:02 PM
Well, ok performance, the right thing for her.

But not for me.

Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger. Rock and roll!

So far all night, not.

"RE: Katie Stevens"
Posted by BriarRosie on 03-16-10 at 08:02 PM
She would have done a lot better in a different season of Idol. This season? She plodded like a Clydesdale, not Wild Horses.

She and Andrew have a sopoforic effect that I imagine would be better than Ambien.

This is what I the snoozefest portion. Damn, time to watch Lost now.

"RE: Katie Stevens"
Posted by Estee on 03-16-10 at 08:03 PM
Now that was desperation -- and the most obvious song choice of the night. She slurred a few words, but overall, it was a better performance than she's given up to this point -- as if it even matters. As with Andrew, Katie's voting block is on autopilot: the only difference may be that she can take a week off and still collect fifteen percent of the virtual ballots.

Her nerves are still controlling her. If she can't flip that around, it'll take her out.

Vibrato Reggae version.

Playing the guitar.

Except you sound totally cuckolded and are singing about controlling a woman. She has you so whipped, boy.

Randy. Man, wow, I didn't get that. Bizarre. Didn't like that. Didn't serve you or the song well. Didn't understand it.

Ellen. I'm going to boo myself. Felt I was at a resort drinking a Pina Colada. Should use this stage to wow us, too much laying back on the beach.

Kara. I get what the GUYS are saying. So incredibly different with the song. Whether you like it or not you made it your own.

Simon. I have applaud you for doing something different, it is a boring song. It didn't work. A lot of people who are Stones fans would be turning the set off. Crazy decision.

Starts on the bloody red stairs of doom.

At least she is moving around the stage.

The pin curl hair bothers me with this song. Egad what a shriek at the end.

Randy. Bringing the drama. That was hot.

Ellen. I love the way you look and sound and how you do the song. Like Snookies poof.

Kara. Adam Lambert flashbacks. Did the most with the song of the night.

Simon. Stand out performance of the night. Now I see the development. You look interesting. You are going to have to scream at the end of every song, but it works. A lot of people will love that and some people will hate it. Much better than indifferent and boring.

"Simon's support."

I think that translates to 'Keep going, don't change, and let that flag fly as much as you want.' She doesn't need universal approval -- just 50.00001%.

Oddly, this did remind me of Adam's better performances, but just in one aspect: he was always the one who seemed to do the most with the stage's capabilities. Siobhan got the drama illumination tonight: not the pimp spot, but the pimp spotlight.

I actually liked that...made me want to have a fruity drink and sway in the tropical breeze

Nasally lounge singer version.
Playing guitar.

Why couldn't they have had this theme last year for Scott to sing about being too blind to see. I really would rather listen to Scott do this. Will it end...ever...this is purgatory isn't it. It won't end....oh Gawd...I'm sorry...I will never sin again just make it stop.

Randy. What I love is you came home with this. Very singer songwriter. I thought it was dope.

Ellen. I thought it was great. Sounded great. I was expecting more from you. Almost didn't come together, like a hospital gown.

Kara. What I can say about you is you are growing faster than anyone. Not as pitchy. Tremendous growth.

Simon. I like you as a person. The story, what held you back is your personality. You don't shine. other people have bigger moments. Have an incredibly good voice. Pray you are back next week. Hope you have a moment. Stop thinking other people are better than you.

No, VH1 is still a separate channel.

Not bad, I guess. Good song the way he played it and sang it. Still... like all of the other performances tonight, I didn't get the Stones connection. He'll survive this week.

Lee is the male I most look forward to each week this season. I liked that. But I get Simon. He needs to have that breakout moment.

"Paige Miles"

Ryan can't see a cue.

Lost Dad, he was paralyzed when she was two and died when she was four. Sang in church.

Seems to use the rasp from the throat problem fairly well.

Randy. This might be a mess. You did alright. I liked it.

Ellen. Used the stage. Great star quality. Sounded great. She has been struggling with her voice.

Kara. You hit some big notes. Applaud you for that. At times you got a little lost. Paige we fell in love with is back.

Simon. He didn't know she had laryngitis. A bit generic and you are better than that. You haven't connected. Makes you unique. At least we heard the big voice we liked in Hollywood.

Give me a break! Simon didn't know she had laryngitis? The whole world knew.

If that's how she sings with her voice power knocked down by laryngitis....... how powerful is her voice, then?

"RE: Question"
Posted by Sues on 03-16-10 at 08:43 PM
this was much better than last weeks debaucle....I hope she continues to improve..

"RE: Paige Miles"

Pretty good for Paige, laryngitis or not, and not bad with the arrangement for a well-known song. I give her props, although I don't have false hopes of her going far. Thumbs up.

Anyone else see a likeness to Kandyse McClure from Battlestar Galactica?

"RE: Paige Miles"

Given her illness issues, I'm giving her a pass this week. There's no way to gauge how she would have done while healthy, and she managed to get through the song while sick. Would it have been better? Can't say for sure -- so move her through and wait to see what she's really capable of.

Again.

"Aaron Kelly"

Really small town. He is adopted at 5 years old. only one that sings.

I thought that was funny, too! Do you think her parents named her that or was it her married name? What happened to his father? I missed the video.
I don't even like 'Angie' and I really enjoyed that. I think he's a sweetie!

Starts out sitting on the stairs of doom, but they are a purple paint chip color.

Thin reedy voice version at least for the start. Finally starts getting into it. Tries Big Mike's Walrus moves.

Randy. Your mom is right. You were born to sing. Love the tender moments in your voice. I like you man.

Ellen. Are you trying to do your hair like mine. That was such a great song choice. The other stand out performance.

Kara. I beat you up good last week. You showed me. When you connect it is powerful.

Simon. I did fear for you with Rolling Stones. You chose the right song. I didn't get what Randy was hearing. You sang the song within the limits of your vocals. You haven't got a big voice. One of your strongest performances.

Well, there goes a huge chunk of the teeny-bopper vote. Nicely done, kid.

"RE: Aaron Kelly"
Posted by Estee on 03-16-10 at 08:50 PM
Saved by the song choice. There's probably four songs in the catalog he could have handled, and he happened to choose one of them. Well done, at least as far as that part goes. For performance -- he handled it, but he came dangerously close to Archieing the thing. He'll advance, and he'll make the tour -- but not much beyond that without a lot of work and luck.

Better than I was expecting.

"Crystal Bowersox"

Rural Ohio. Dad was her Roadie. Dad is cute about a song she wrote about him.

What I wanted: Rock and Roll

What I got: Countrified song.......

Guess the song title was right.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"
Posted by Snidget on 03-16-10 at 08:58 PM
Walks out from the back with the guitar. Coffee House Jazzy version. Gets a bit more Janis at the chorus.

Randy. I don't think it was your best performance, but I love you, you are always great. Didn't disappoint even if not my favorite.

Ellen. You sing with such ease and born to be on stage. Missing some personality and you added that.

Stop thinking, no one should think. Let yourself have fun. Love seeing that.

Kara. I agree, like she thinks she has this. You loosened up. You are so comfortable and easy to watch.

Simon. What do you mean by over thinking. I wasn't in the right zone.

What is interesting is you came out 100% the clear favorite. The song didn't have what you needed. You were beaten by somebody, Siobhan. Just when you think you have it you have to kill.

"Power outage."
Posted by Estee on 03-16-10 at 08:59 PM
Controlled and fairly melodic, but too soft and way too much out of the original zone. Calling back to previous commentary: this was the sort of performance I'd expect to hear in the subway. Walking down the middle of the car. Asking for quarters. It's not bad -- but it's severely misplaced.

This is her second pimp spot. She doesn't need the extra boost yet -- but for the first time, she's shown that she just might need it down the road. Her weaknesses are beginning to come out, and they currently center around being nearly locked in to a central style/interpretation.

She can still win, sure. But there are danger weeks ahead.

"RE: Power outage."
Posted by zazzy on 03-17-10 at 04:23 PM
Crystal hasn't had the pimp spot before.

Katie, Siobhan and Lilly were the girls who had pimp spots in the semifinals.

I may have been counting Hollywood. And the auditions. And the fifty thousand times Simon brought her name up in the national media. Per week.

Very nice, nice and easy. Like she does three shows a night.

I miss Lilly.

Good performance, excellent even, but she sure looks tired, kind of in a Janis Joplin sort of way. It seems there's something weighing her down while she could really, really shine as a free spirit. I like this gal, but I still wonder if she can take it.

And therein lies the difference between the AI performances and the Stones.

They should be jumping and hopping on top of their seats. None of this rapturous arm waving nonsense.

I had to look that up. Thank you very much for teaching me about the Altamont Free Concert. Sex and drugs and $500 in beer. Gosh, the 60s weren't good to everybody.

At any rate, Michael Slezak (EW) named the audience 'Swaybots'. It's as good a term as any.
