"Not So Move of the Week: Episode Seven"

Posted by magic_star on 07-11-03 at 03:26 PM

Welcome to the episode seven Not So Move of the Week voting thread!

There are six choices here and you can pick one. The choice that gets the most votes will move on to the Not So Move of the Season Vote at the end of the season.

These choices are based on moves of no intelligence, poor decisions made by a team, or downward movements in the field of competition.

If you'd like to take a look at the episode six thread go here:

If you'd like to take a look at the episode six results go here:
Episode Six Results

Your episode seven choices are...

1.David/Jeff, Jon/Al, and Kelly/Jon all sleep in hotels instead of waiting at the train station. They blow quite a bit of money for just a couple hours of comfy sleep. The money could have easily been saved for later uses.

2.Reichen/Chip waste time arguing over which taxi they should take to Highway 47. They end up with a taxi with little gas and a slow driver. By the end of all their problems including running out of gas they fall to 6th place when they finally make it to the Roadblock. They stay toward the back for the rest of the leg and finish in 5th place.

3.Millie/Chuuck don't check their taxi they take to Highway 47. It has almost no gas in it and they eventually run out on the highway. They have to stop, but then it overheats. They try to get a new taxi, but finally their old one is fixed and they take it to the Roadblock. They fall all the way down to 5th place.

4.Tian trys to do the Roadblock, but she can't hold on to the bull. She fails two times and loses a spot to Kelly/Jon. Tian/Jaree fall to 4th place after the Roadblock, just ahead of Millie/Chuck.

5.Tian/Jaree forget to grab the bales of coir when they get on the elephant. They must get back off and grab them, then get back on again. The whole process costs them about 3-5 minutes that would have put them ahead of Millie/Chuck and Reichen/Chip. They go on to be eliminated.

6.Millie/Chuck and Kelly/Jon both don't examine their maps carefully on the elephant Detour. Millie/Chuck just simply follow Kelly/Jon the wrong way. Luckily for them, they don't lose too much time. But on a close leg like this one, their mistakes could have been costly.

This vote will close Wednesday 8:00 PM EST.

5.Tian/Jaree forget to grab the bales of coir when they get on the elephant. They must get back off and grab them, then get back on again. The whole process costs them about 3-5 minutes that would have put them ahead of Millie/Chuck and Reichen/Chip. They go on to be eliminated.

I choose #5, because all through this leg, teams bunched up, so every minute did count. Tian and Jaree had stopped bickering and were working pretty good together. By not taking an extra 20 second to read the info more carefully, they did lose precious time in loading up the two bales on their elephant, time they could not afford to lose.

#2 and #3 tie for second place - although only luck of the draw will determine if your decrepit taxi won't break down, players can certainly take a quick moment to look at the gas guage. Millie and Chuck didn't think to check, and Reichen and Chip decided it wasn't worth the time to keep looking for a taxi with more gas - both lost precious time. Next time, that could mean elimination.

well, my pick would be T/J getting lost on the elephant, because its the only way R/C could have managed to pass them despite all the mistakes they made on the bike.

I don't know if forgetting the yarn really cost them that much time, but #5 is the runner up

My choice of those listed is #2 - it SHOULD have cost Chip and Reichen the game (combined with their ineptitude at the Detour)

#5 - So many poor decisions this week, but this was the one that took T/J out. Close 2nd was R/C's spending too much time looking for a cab with gas only to end up with a cab without gas.

This week was full of plenty of Not So Moves of the week.

Ladies...In a game like Amazing Race, it is generally desirable to carefully follow directions.

Runner up is #2, that was just wasteful. It should have cost them the game.

#5 is the one - it cost them the game when Rip came back.

I wish it had been #2, because that could have cost Rip the game if Ianee hadn't been so stupid with their instructions.

#5. You know what they say, he (or she) who screws up last screws up the biggest. They were just getting to be a really enjoyable team too

Though I don't usually do analysis of each move, I think I'll do so here to clarify my thinking:

1) Not cost efficient, but most of them probably have money to burn at this point anyway.
2) An unlucky taxi draw.
3) Almost as bad as #2, but not quite.
4) Not a bad move because Jaree wouldn't have done any better.
5) This was their final big mistake, but in terms of time it was so small that I can't endorse it as the "winner".
6) Minimal effect.

#2. They were behind for most of the episode because of this, and managed to make it only because T&A--er, J--screwed up.

Though, did it bug everyone else that ALL THE TEAMS EXCEPT FOR R&C DECIDED TO TAKE THE ELEPHANTS? Clearly there wasn't much difference in their positions--there probably wasn't more than an hour or so between the first and last place. So wouldn't you want to, well, pick the task that MIGHT GET YOU SOME TIME?

"#5 - READ THE DIRECTIONS"
Posted by VA Slim on 07-11-03 at 09:31 PM
How many times is the simple art of reading the directions carefully proven to be a great help or hinderance in AR? The answer, boys and girls is - A LOT! It seems especially true this race. Since the few minutes of lost time appears to have been critical to surviving or going to loser island, #5 is my pick. Map reading has also been a crucial skill this race but since it didn't mean elimination, then #6 is my second choice.

It's gotta be two. That was real sad to watch.

#5... as Slim said READ THE DIRECTIONS!!!
Even if you didn't learn that watching previous versions of TAR, you should have absorbed that lesson in the buggy ticket incident.

These reality show contestants need a reality check!

#5. No doubt it about. But has it occurred to anybody that the problem might not be that they didn't read the directions, but that they forgot about the coir until they were on the elephant?

I think it's a case of short term memory and not so much ineptitude.

Unless I wasn't paying attention. Must be my short term memory.

It directly led to their elimination, so it definitely takes precedence.

All right, back to the countdown:

1. No. There's too much we don't know: how much the teams have left, and how much the room cost -- if anything! In the past teams have been allowed to stay in the pit stop hotel until morning for no extra charge.

6. This would be higher if it had just mentioned Kelly/Jon. It seems obvious, to me anyway, that what we saw was Kelly/Jon getting lost and Millie/Chuck simply catching up with them as a result. Note that Kelly remarked "I don't see anybody else" as she was (rightly) wondering if they'd taken a wrong turn, an observation confirmed by the shot of a street devoid of other elephants behind them.

3. I guess it depends on whether you think Millie/Chuck were the only ones who didn't check, or Reichen/Chip were the only ones who did. I tend to agree with the majority in tending to think it more bad luck than bad move.

4. Although I think this contributed more, in terms of time lost, to their elimination than the coir thing, this was more a case of running into a challenge they weren't as physically up to as others, than it was a "not-so-move". Besides, it brought me back to my numerous failed attempts at water skiing at that party at my ex-boss's house.

5. If this entry had been the combination of picking the slower elephant option AND forgetting the coir, it would have been my vote, but it would hypocritical of me not to take the heart the importance of READING in my evaluation. Therefore, this drops to second.

The loser: #2. Lesson to be learned: when picking a taxi, the quality of the driver is more important than the condition of the cab. Just ask Tian and Jaree about that sometime.

Can I add 1 more 'not so move'?

#7 - Reichen/Chip did not use their Fast Forward when they are
way behind the other team.
I have been kept wondering the whole night why do they have
to race to hard for the whole race when they could just use their fast forward? What are they reserving it for? Isn't that a best moment to use it? They could have just got the cruise
prize and relax abit. If they got eliminated at this episode 7, they probably going to cry their heart out!

Anyway, back to the voting:

My thought process:

1. For Jon/Al and Kelly/Jon, it seem really waste of money to sleep in the hotel, since they are going to take a train to transfer the train...especially when Kelly wanted to wake up early, then they might as well camp outside.

2. At first I really think that Reichen/Chip were clever to check the gas, as the other team seen to just jump into 1 cab and gone. But then, too bad that they still didn't get the right cab and wasted a lot of time.

3. Well, like I said, none of the other team seem to check, so it's just a matter of bad luck for them.

4. This was never her fault! This was a lousy roadblock which specially set up to block the women team. Luckily Tian manage to get it done before the next team came.

5. This I have to say they have really make a big mistake. Jaree was really like a spoil kid where her eyes see nothing BUT the elephant. She probably thought that is her utimate aim of coming to this race...so fine, she got her objective fullfill, she can now go home. Tian is just a baby sitter who escort her to the elephant ride.

6. Actually I don't quite get what have happened to these team, the elephant is so slow and teams are like doing their sightseeing...I can't really tell who is lost.

Conclusion : my vote is one of the popular one : #5.

I have to go with #5. Even with the magic of TV editting, it seemed pretty clear that it took a painfully long time for T&J to get back off the elephant once they realized what they had forgotten. The handlers all looked confused, as did the poor elephant.

Honorable mention to #2 - to waste that much time AND still suffer what you thought you were going to avoid...

I'm going to say #2. Even though it didn't get them eliminated, it cost them a lot of time.
