"Vision of Walt"

There is quite a bit of discussion about Walt's appearance in the season premiere thread. It seems most agree that he is speaking backwards and says "Don't push the button, the button is bad".

What I want to discuss is the manner in which he appeared. It almost seemed like a vision and that he wasn't physically there. Did anyone else get that vibe? We know that Walt has special abilities. Could he telepathically be sending a message. If that is the case, is it signficant that the message was received backwards?

Or...could it have something to do with the twin\alter ego angle. I have twins and they are identical - mirror image twins and everything about them is opposite but the same. That also crossed my mind with the backwards message part.

All I have to say is that I loved the Walt part of the show. It was even better than the hatch!

Shannon's vision of Walt reminds me of Jack's vision of his father. Maybe they are both dead?

I was watching the Extra Disk from the season 1 DVD over the weekend and there is a deleted scene from season 1.

Jack is talking to someone on the island and he says how when he worked in the hospital there was a TV in the waiting room that played soap operas all day long and how on the island their life is like a soap opera. And I forget who he is talking to and they say "yeah all we need are the evil twins"

You got me thinking here. "What if"... this is already a 'processed' Walt? The twin/mirror image of the real one? It could explain why he's talking backwards. Is there any way to check Walt's appearance and see if what we saw is a mirror image of him? Maybe somebody who taped the episode can compare Walt on screen with some photos of him?

Just wandered over here to add that Walt is also wearing different clothes since last we saw him. On the raft he was wearing a solid color shirt, in the forest he is wearing stripes.

And, of course, he's drenched, even though he never went in the water during the kidnapping.

And there's that whole "paul is dead" speaking backwards thing.

Creepy. Just ...creepy.

Shannon's vision of Walt reminded me of Boone's vision of Shannon being taken by the "monster" and killed. What they both had in common was that they were both (Boone and, later, Shannon) very focused in that moment on the person they saw. Boone, if memory serves, was pissed about Shannon growing closer to Sayid, and Shannon was pissed about losing Walt's dog.

If it was the same area of the island where both of these things occurred (and there's no real way to tell, as one happened during the day and one at night), then there could be some "thing" that translates these thoughts into some sort of waking dream. Both, I believe, were preceded by the infamous whispers Danielle talked about.

Yeah, but in Boone's case, he was seeing things through a Locke-induced drug haze. I don't think that Shannon could have received the same impetus unless it's the heroin from the plane and we certainly didn't see any evidence of that.

Okay, okay I know you are all tired of talking about this, but it still really puzzles me. After episode 2.3 where there is lots of button pressing going on, I am even more confused.

Could this all be just a little in-joke being played on us (the internet geeks) since the mass audience would never have thought to play the message backwards or search boards for what Walt is saying. A McGuffin as Ayak would say.

Or, could the message being played backwards be significant, ie. the opposite is true...the button is good.
