"AI8 Finally Results Show 5/20"

Please keep all sigpic-free text only discussion of tonight's fillerama fest of has-beens, nearly wases, and wannabe agains on this thread and this thread only until the results are announced on the West Coast sometime Thursday, if we are lucky.

Programming note. The show is already scheduled to go over by 7 minutes. So for those recording the show make sure you have extra time set to account for that and the extra run over that we know is coming.

Additional programming note. This thread may get very busy during the last portion of the show so if you need the results but the thread doesn't load just give it a minute or two and try again. I will try to have the results posted as soon as I can get through, but it sometimes takes a few tries.

Why, oh why are they scheduled to go over by 7 minutes? It takes all of 2 frickin' minutes to say "XXXX, YOU are our next American Idol." Do they really need 65 minutes of filler and commercials? They can't cut 7 minutes somewhere? Really?

Oh, I know the reasons why, I just wanted to complain. I'm gonna watch it on the DVR and fast-forward through all the commercials and most of the filler dreck.

That's pretty much how I watch everything these days, especially reality tv. The dragged out filler thing is out of control.

Unfortunately, my "DVR" is actually Windows Vista Media Player on our desktop computer, not an actual DVR hooked to our 42" TV that I could watch from the comfort of my couch. I have to sit on an uncomfortable office chair and sit at the desk to watch. The upside is that I can post on RTVW while watching the show.

Oh, good. So basically, I can just tune in at ten, catch the announcement, then turn it off before Kara's attempt to destroy the series gets its third airplay. How nice of them to let us know.

Lots of stars in audience shots.

Tonight we crown the idol, and the hottest ticket in town.

Some of you couldn't get through. Just under 100 million votes came in.

624 million season long votes.

Is Ryan TRYING to kill me. The four that so PROFESSIONALLY?!?!?!

What.

"RE: Checking in with parents"

I didn't even know Kris was married! I read it here on the boards a week or so ago, when they did the "return home" trip. Do you think they ignored that because it might detract from the fangirls dreaming of winning his heart?

"RE: Checking in with parents"

Maybe they were afraid that focusing a lot on his wife would promote the same kind of backlash that Gokey got for them constantly mentioning is deceased wife?

"RE: Danny Gokey and Lionel Richie"
Posted by JessicaRN on 05-21-09 at 10:48 PM
I agree! I think part of why many of us took a disliking to Danny was not even his fault. In the auditions, his story touched me and I really liked him. How much was the tugging on heartstrings manipulated by the producers. Danny didn't actually talk about it that much.

Also, I recently lost my brother, and the pain and grief permeates all aspects of your life, so maybe it is normal for him to have been how he seemed.

"RE: Danny Gokey and Lionel Richie"
Posted by Snidget on 05-22-09 at 06:53 AM
Danny didn't say anything on the show after his family pulled out her picture on live TV.

He did say quite a bit about it off the show in some of the interviews I saw or read. We didn't get infested with them, but there were some that I think must have been friends and family that were on some boards that spend most of their time making sure no one ever forgot his back story. Maybe he couldn't control that but I've never noticed it as much for any of the previous idols with tragic backstories.

Anywho. Sometimes I feel like I'm not allowed to hate him for being this year's mediocre singer that really didn't deserve the absurd amount of praise he got or was way too certain on Weds. that he was totally safe, or any of the non-wife related things he did that grated on my nerves. I've been allowed to hate all the others for that stuff. I don't see why having a dead wife means I can't use the same standard I use on everyone else.

"RE: Adam's Journey"
Posted by BriarRosie on 05-20-09 at 08:20 PM
Ok, now we know that Adam just joined the Kiss Army.

The wild part about all this for me is that I'm so used to seeing Gene without his Kiss makeup on his reality show, that seeing him in his Kiss regalia seems weird to me.

That was freaking awesome, though.

OK, anybody will look a little out of place onstage as the fourth wheel for Kiss. That having been said, Adam had the best vocals, and could fit in a a lead.

I don't think the makeup would put him off.

Adam + KISS = Best Idol Moment Ever!

I really didn't think he could top some of his earlier stuff (Ring of Fire, Mad World, Whole Lotta Love, PTFMWB), and perhaps he didn't. But at the end of the day, he put his stamp on this whole contest. Lock, stock and two smokin' (yes MC, an ode to you), barrels on that!

Phe. No. Me. Nal.

(Bias much? Yep. Sue me).

I know this reaction surprises many of you, given how cool, calm and collected I usually am, but whatever. I'll take a Mulligan tonite.

"Theory #2"

Here's my second theory for tonight's winner:

the producers used Coldplay's Viva La Vida song...when I ruled the world...as background music for Adam's journey package.

That portends: Adam's the winner.

Steve is quite a high level musician on the Banjo. Witness McEuen behind him relegated to the Mandolin. McEuen is the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Banjo player, one of the best in the business.

I think I remember that Martin has won a Grammy or two for his recordings. And that wa a very nice song that he wrote.

Did I just really see that? Brian May and Queen? I can go to my happy place now. Seriously.

Just a thought. Much as I like Kris (and I do, I really do - I just backspaced to spell his name right), never, ever put him on a Queen duet with Adam. Ever. Adam reminds one of the GREATEST Vocalists ever (F. Mercury) - anyone else pales in comparison. I think even Brian was a bit surprised with this one!

I agree completely. I am really glad Kris won, he needs the win more than Adam, and they obviously had a great time singing together, but I would have loved to hear just Adam (no other Idol background singers) with Queen.

So, Paul Rodgers quit Queen last week, have they filled their opening?

I have repeatedly learned through the years that merit often has little to do with the outcome of reality shows. Still, I am very disappointed that the better artist did not win. I guess that the consolation is that the more talented artist will not be shackled to the American Idol franchise.

"RE: Results"
Posted by BriarRosie on 05-20-09 at 09:08 PM
I've always liked Kris better than Adam. Adam's great as a performer, but I like Kris's style much better.

I'm actually happy that he won, but I have to admit that I would have been happy with either one winning at this point. I felt that they both deserved to win.

And boy....that song DOES song much better when sung in the correct key!

"RE: Results"

"RE: Results"

I really thought I was prepared for this. And though I am sadly not surprised, I was not prepared. As much as I like Kris, and wish him well, I don't think that the best singer throughout the competition prevailed.

Seriously? Was Kris better than Adam? No chance. None whatsoever.

America - what are you so afraid of?

"RE: Results"
Posted by SilverStar on 05-20-09 at 10:31 PM
I'm not afraid of anything (except heights, snakes and spiders). I liked Kris better (yes, there is a chance.) I did not like Adam less just because he was gay and I'm frankly insulted by all these comments of the sort. It's ticking me off.

"RE: Results"
Posted by zazzy on 05-20-09 at 10:39 PM
I haven't read the boards where people are saying they were voting against Adam. I've only seen support for Adam because the people were crazy about him or support for Kris because they loved his style. Not a matter of being afraid of Adam winning.

Adam won a lot by going on the show. Huge exposure. Huge. And tremendous media coverage.

Those who think Adam's coming in second means he is out of the clutches of 19 E, Sony, and Simon, think again. 19 gets first chance to sign and/or manage. If 19 doesn't give him a recording contract Sony will and 19 will manage him. Simon gets a cut of anything the AIers record with Sony.

They have Adam in their clutches and they won't be letting go.

They made an example of Taylor and no one has gone the Taylor route in season 6 or 7 unless 19 and Sony didn't want them.

"RE: Results"
Posted by ulalame on 05-21-09 at 01:52 AM
Taylor was the winner. That is why he got the deal from the company that he got, and had the problems with the company that he did. Other non-winners, like Chris Daughtry, have done JUST FINE. Adam will do just fine. Taylor is like the first winner on Project Runway, a pissant stirring up a good pot for no good reason, and forgoing his prize in the wake of it, rather than just seeing where the wave took him.

That may be true, but Adam now doesn't have to worry about the pressures of *being* the American Idol, nor does he have to worry about the pressures of selling records *as* the American Idol.

Also, you would have to figure that since he wasn't the winner, they may not have the leash as tight on him, such as pidgeonholing him into one genre. Granted, he's a very good Rocker, but he can do more.

Kris might be getting shoehorned into country, which already has Kelly and Carrie........ at the bare minimum.

That is the issue we have to deal with. For heaven's sake, are you kidding me? The most obviously talented kid just lost. Blatantly. Unless you prescribe to a Wonderfalls kind of world, there's nothing in the universe that could suggest a better winner than Adam. What is wrong with the people of America?

I am soooooooo happy for Kris. At the very end, when he was hugging his wife, how cute was that?

Obviously Adam is happy for Kris. Some of what I just read here has really pissed me off. I wasn't expecting these idiotic comments coming from people on this board. What a shame. I knew some dumb stuff was coming but I guess I hoped it wouldn't. Can't it be that Kris has a broader appeal? Can't it be that lots of people thought Kris deserved to win this? Does it have to be because Adam is gay? Can't it be because Adam is love him or hate him... and A LOT of people hate him? Can't it be that he's not everybody's cuppa? Are you freaking kidding me with all of this?

"RE: Results"
Posted by Snidget on 05-21-09 at 07:44 AM
In case you are peeved at me I never meant to imply it was the only reason.

Kris is inoffensive which gives him an advantage when you have someone that actually causes people to have a big reaction to him. I can't help that some of that reaction has to do with the cultural wars going on right now or that some of the worst offenders in keeping this country as divided as possible latched onto a particular competition as a way to prove that they have the upper hand.

I have always felt Adam was a love him or leave him kind of guy and NO ONE is saying anything about Glow, specifically, when they discuss trends they see in the culture as a whole.

Maybe you are lucky to live in an area where no one ever thinks anything bad about anyone because of some label they can paste on them and refuse to look beyond the label. I've never lived in a place like that. I've always had to keep my unconditional respect and love for everyone stuff under my hat for fear I'll be hurt if people really knew that was how I felt.

I have heard some of the most homophobic comments from people I think are moderate or even fairly progressive compared to some.

I am sorry you are taking everything personally. I do not intend any comment I make about some segments of society to apply to any specific individual on this board unless they actually come out and state that.

I do find it kinda funny how much VFTW's founder is being called homophobic because they picked Kris. Given he's openly gay and talks about his boyfriend all the time.

I do understand how people aren't hearing all the other comments I make about why I was sure days ago Kris would win. I'm not going to overlook the bigotry I have to live with in my backyard every single day just because it might make someone feel bad.

So tempted to ask to have this thread locked.

never.

And I'm not taking anything personally. I just get annoyed with all the "he won because dot dot dot" comments. But my comment was not directed at you at all. I shouldn't have assumed that you would know that. (It was a general reply to the whole conversation that took place underneath your post.)

"Antique Shoppe - The End"

The sun begins to set, there remains a few beams. MC can see her neighbor’s cat slumber in the day’s end.

MC sees Adam leaving her – his footsteps on the wooden stair, a ray of sunshine on the front swing, creaking in the breeze, boot heels kicking up the dust as he walks away under a cloudy sky

MC then sees her dishwasher floating in the parlour. She walks through to the front of the shoppe – what is that out there? A Lemonade stand out in front of the Shoppe?? Who is that little kid selling it?

MC wanders through her Shoppe – stopping in the powder room. What the heck are those balloons filling her tub? What the hell?

She smashes knuckles on the rails of her brass headboard, smashing them so hard she wakes up. #####! All a dream. It could not be all a dream!!

She grabs her shawl and runs outside.

As she looks down the road, sunlight shines on the silver chains hanging off his hip as he sashays down the road. His arm flies up as he gives a flick of his wrist in a casual goodbye.

*blink blink* Was it a dream? Or just wishful thinking?

MC retreats back into the Shoppe. She kicks off her shoes and curls up on the sofa in the parlour. Alone. But happy.

Adam will probably be the most successful non-winner, if he finds the right band. His world wide appeal should carry him past Clay and Daughtry. I just hope that Kris doesn't end up like Taylor and Rueben. He may not be the most talented vocalist, but he's an incredibly likable guy, and has some potential in the right niche. He doesn't deserve obscurity and criticism for winning.

"RE: Adam's consolation"
Posted by mtopaz on 05-21-09 at 01:45 AM
IMO, if this competition was based on raw talent and an amazing range, Adam should have won. But it's a popularity contest, and he came in second. I was disappointed but not surprised.

However, I do agree with the above -- esp. #4. I don't think Adam would do as well with handlers trying to fit him into some formula or another.

Kris is a very nice young man and he has a pleasant voice, very easy listening. He's also "aw shucks" cute as a button, so he'll do well with the AI backing and promotional push.

But I look forward to seeing much, much more of Adam Lambert - he's going to be a superstar. I hope he knows that he didn't need to win this thing ... it's just a part of the long road he's going to travel in his career.

We don't see much of it here, but I have seen enough "we can't let the gay win" carp on other parts of the interwebs that I have to think that some of the vote was a bigot vote.

I do think that Kris was likely to pick up more fans as the year went on and other fans needed to find a new favorite. I do believe a lot of people who can't stand Adam really don't care about the pictures or the guyliner or theatrical as code for queer (the gay is OK as long as they don't act all flamboyant or anything and straight flamboyant people should just stop it even if they sleep with the right gender). However I can't discount the percentage of America that really doesn't want openly gay, especially openly flamboyant people anywhere near their kids.

"RE: So."
Posted by Estee on 05-21-09 at 05:28 AM
That depends on what you think I said.

If you believe I said 'Every single person who voted for Kris only did so because they're bigots', then you're wrong: that is not what I said and it's hardly what I meant -- so if you want to read it that way, maybe you'd better start putting some thought in as to why.

If, however, you believe I said 'A given percentage of Kris' voter base only cast for him because their bigotry led them to fear Adam, and they were going to vote for anyone else in order to keep a possibly-gay male from becoming America's idol in any sense of the term', congratulations on your accuracy.

And if you think that percentage made up the winning difference last night -- then tell me what you believe that percentage to be.

"RE: So."
Posted by mtb002 on 05-20-09 at 09:33 PM
But I think the same thing would have happened had it been Danny/Kris in the Finals, I think most of Adams votes would have gone to Kris because Adam fans(for the most part) don't like Danny. Kris was the only contestant left that people didn't have strong feelings about. I'm not going to pretend that the church crowd that Danny attracted would have welcomed Adam with open arms, but that distaste was a two way street.

"RE: So."
Posted by seahorse on 05-20-09 at 09:36 PM
I think most that voted for Gokey were not bigots probably some but probably some of everybody's voting base are bigots.

I think that if you liked Gokey's style of singing you would most likely like Kris' style over Adam's.

I do think that Adam was more talented as a singer but a lot of that comes from 15+ years in theatre.

Kris was not nearly as polished as Adam but he was very likeable and was talented as a musician and as an arranger of his music.

"None"
Posted by Devious Weasel on 05-20-09 at 09:59 PM
If we're defining base as the people who supported an artist all season. And we certainly should be defining someone's base as just that group. If we're talking in terms of who voted for him this week, I'd say significantly larger than none, but I'd add that those votes alone didn't cause Kris to win. Or, rather, that if you tossed out all those votes, Kris still wins the competition. It was clear after last week that Kris was the vote leader and probably had been for awhile, and you'd have to argue that Kris' votes last week had very few people who were voting for him because they didn't want to see Adam win based on perceptions of who Adam is.

I'd say Adam suffered as much from being the clear show/judges favorite and the over-pimping he got as the season progressed as anything else non-performance related. And on a performance basis, while his highs were arguably higher than Kris' (though I'd say they weren't that much higher), his lows were far, far, FAR, lower than Kris'. Adam's performances ranged from absolute genius to absolute drek. Kris' ranged from near-genius to average.

"RE: None"
Posted by zazzy on 05-20-09 at 10:07 PM
Agree. Overpimping is the key here. I think America is tired of the arrogance the show displays and spoke loudly.

If the vote had been close, Ryan would have touted that. Instead, we got the nearly 100 million number a few times.

Kris was so under the radar that we on this board barely knew him when we did our PTTE's. We thought he was cannon fodder right behind Jasmine and Jorge. I think the highest anyone had him was midpack.

Look at how much they pimped and repimped Matt, for Pete's sake. It's a shame they didn't make it a more level playing field and let the fan base for Adam grow more organically instead of seeding it so much with all their pimpage tricks. They may even be the reason Adam didn't win!

In their drive to attract viewers and make the show a big spectacle that gets buzz, they lost touch. These last 2 weeks have been a lesson for Simon and the producers.

"RE: None"
Posted by seahorse on 05-20-09 at 10:24 PM
You make a good point about the closeness of the vote. The vote was probably not extremely close or they would have pointed that out like they have in the past. Kris probably won by 2-5 million votes compared to only a million last week.

"RE: None"
Posted by cahaya on 05-20-09 at 10:35 PM
Even in the earlier rounds, Kris didn't really stand out, yet he got footage much of the way through. There's a certain amount of subjective selectivity that goes all the way back to who makes it through the audition line. And who made it through with a lot of lens time? The bikini girl? Good ol' Norman? Tatiana into the wildcards? Good grief. At least Norman provided some comedic (and I might add, rather entertaining) relief to a lot of this nonsense.

"RE: None"
Posted by zazzy on 05-21-09 at 08:56 AM
Were we watching the same show? Kris had less than one minute of airtime before singing in the semifinals.

Even after he started performing in the top 13, many times the judges would distract from him by doing their bickering thing after giving him comments. Notice that they rarely did the bickering/childish antics when commenting to Adam.

Just weighing in that there are many fans who like Kris for Kris and it has nothing to do with Adam. I enjoyed both, would have been ok with either winning. Adam was wonderful tonight on the finale.

HEY!!!

I voted for Kris and it had nothing to do with any sort of negative feelings for Adam (of which I have none... I just like Kris better)! Plus, last week, weren't there only 1 million votes that separated the two? Don't get me wrong, I love me some Adam, but I can only hope America voted for the right reason.

"RE: So."
Posted by SilverStar on 05-20-09 at 10:16 PM
I voted for Kris because I liked him the most. I am not a bigot. In fact, one of the things I loved most about Adam was his flamboyance and that he didn't care what people thought of him. Way to undermine someone just because they're not gay. That's the only reason he won! Whatever.

"RE: So."
Posted by HistoryDetective on 05-20-09 at 10:47 PM
I don't think that anybody said that you are a bigot --- or that all Kris fans and voters are bigots ... but don't you think that it is possible that some people voted for Kris simply to keep the probably-queer guy from winning? My local news ran a story last night about the voting for the final two being a culture war. Like Snidget, I have seen other parts of the internets that have actively rallied the bigot vote: voting against Adam rather than voting for Kris.

We can agree to disagree about who should have won or who is the better artist, but I think that you are misreading the commentary if you choose to believe that people are saying that every. single. person who voted for Kris did so due to bigotry. No one has made that claim.

No, being straight was not the only reason that Kris won ... but it seems to have been a contributing factor (a factor, not the only factor).

It seems similar to the most recent presidential election. Did some voters select McCain in an attempt to keep a black man out of the White House? Certainly. Did all McCain voters feel that way? Certainly not. That would be a ridiculous suggestion.

"RE: So."
Posted by SilverStar on 05-20-09 at 11:23 PM
I know that nobody specifically pointed the finger at me and said "You are a bigot because you voted for Kris Allen!" but it is still frustrating when 2 minutes after the results, people are already talking about how he won because he was the straight guy and people voted for him because of that. Wouldn't you be mad if Adam had won and some of the comments were about how the gays came out in force to vote for him? It's just irritating and maybe I reacted a bit strongly. Maybe it's because I tend to read more "liberal" boards (this board and TWoP are the only ones I read) and I haven't seen any of this anti-gay vibe that you and others have seen. I don't care to read that sort of thing because it just upsets me. All the articles and news reports I have seen have been very pro-Adam.

I'm just sick of the general notion that straight people dislike gay people, and that is what I'm reacting to. I know some do, obviously, but in my world, most of them don't. But that is a discussion for another place, and I think (hope) you know my views and we can agree on that. In the big picture, all this AI crap doesn't matter. We like who we like. I completely understand why people love Adam (hell, I even love Adam!), and I would hope that people could understand why I also love Kris.

"RE: So."
Posted by Snidget on 05-21-09 at 05:28 AM
I think there are a lot of people that voted for Kris for the right reasons, and not all anti-Adam votes (there are always anti someone votes in any contest, I'm sure there was an anti-Kris contingent they just haven't been as obvious) had to do with homophobia.

I tend to try to get a big cross-section of news/internet postings even when the stuff that upsets me (that keep your enemies closer thing). What was vaguely amusing to me was half of the Fox media machine doing everything it could to pimp the heck out of Adam and force us to make him the winner, the other half of the Fox media machine was freaking out about him being just too much and encouraging people to vote for someone, anyone else (although most of that was pro-Danny until that pimping backfired).

I think Adam did get the "can't vote for the pimped" vote. That worked against Danny and it also worked against Adam. People that voted for Kris to get Danny who was over-pimped out would vote for Kris to get Adam who was over-pimped out. The always vote for the least pimped sadly is not about talent, but you don't have to vote about talent in these things and a lot of America does not. I mean how often does America save whoever Simon says needs to pack their bags. We just have that sort of perversity in the culture, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I just don't think that people are being mean or overly cynical to think that people who spend every Sunday listening to preachers rant about the evils of the homosexual agenda are going to forget all that when faced with someone like Adam. It may be because I live in a part of the country where homophobia is widely accepted as pretty much the only legitimate world view (I went to an AIDS rally where the people trying to educate people about AIDS regularly get told there are no gay people in this county), but then again there are people around here trying to prove the slaves were so much better off before the emancipation and freak out when someone complains to the school district about them teaching that viewpoint to their kids. So that does tend to color my cynicism.

I believe Kris did get alot of the anti-Adam vote. The problem is those people will vote vote vote to get their WIN. But they will not buy the music of Kris when it comes out. They proved their point and Adam did not win.

Adam's vote came from people who truly loved Adam and will buy his music. Kris got votes for alot of reasons like he was the Safe vote, the Underdog, etc. Fans of the show get caught up in it and vote. But they do not buy the music.

Adam outsold Kris on iTunes all season. For that reason I think Adam will become the better known of the 2 in the future. This will always be remembered as Adam's season. A few years from now alot of people will not remember who won.

Adam outsold Kris on iTunes all season.

I don't think this is correct. I'll have to dig a bit to find where I read it, but I think Kris actually outsold Adam, and the others.

Regardless, I don't think Kris will have trouble selling albums, nor will he be forgotten. His style is perfect for airplay right now.

These are the numbers I remember

While Lambert, as expected, is the most downloaded artist so far with 6 of the top 10 top tracks, Kris Allen actually occupies 3 of the slots, while Gokey has just 1 song on the list.

The shock was Kris Allen was in second rather than Danny, not that Kris was outselling Adam.

Although this more recent link
http://mjsbigblog.com/download-finale-performances-from-itunes.htm

does have Kris doing better than he was in the earlier information.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "bigot vote" played a factor, but it didn't dictate why I liked Kris over Adam.

For one thing, I don't live in a conservative area. I've got gay friends and straight friends, people of all races and religions. So the anti-gay factor was a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

And my favorite was Allison. Not Adam. Not Kris. My second favorite was Kris, so that's why I wanted him to win. While I thought Adam was a powerful performer, his screechy vocals totally turned me off. I prefer Kris's arrangements. He won me over for songs like "All She Wants to Do is Dance".

Kris and Adam both succeeded in sounding like themselves, not like poor imitations of the original artist. Lil Rounds couldn't pull that off, even though she had some strong vocal chops.

And to me, I felt that the show was trying too hard to pimp Adam. Call it the Smithson Effect. I didn't like feeling like he was a "ringer" for the producers to trot out on stage. I didn't like it from Carly, and even though Adam is extremely talented, I didn't care for it on his behalf, either.

These are the thoughts going on in my brain for why I chose Kris over Adam. I'm hoping that the majority of voters felt that way, too....not because of some bigotry vote.

What is interesting to me living here is I really don't think we have that many more bigots per capita than in any other part of the country I've lived in. The difference here is that with the culture you don't have to stifle yourself and can say those sorts of things in public or to strangers.

I'd almost rather have that then where I grew up where no one would ever say anything, but based on vote totals or other things like that you know that people's appearance of tolerance was often just a facade. You might occasionally find out in a private moment who was whom, but never in a newspaper article or when you first met someone.

It may surprise you that I have plenty of gay friends, and friends of all ethnic groups even though one would think that maybe there ain't gonna be any of them there people 'round 'ere.

My fav part was Kiss and Santana rocking in the midst of it. Woo! (*spin*)

They could have left Tatiana out of it, though.

Adam is tremendously versatile with just about any kind of band. (Kiss live? No prob!) It's kind of funny to think Kris is the one who came up with Santana Latin style keys and rhythms in the earlier rounds and tonight he wins.

AI title or not, Adam is headed up the charts as he can lead with almost anyone. Kris will have a bit of a following of his own with mellow vocals and arrangements.

Offer me a concert ticket? and I know which one I'd take.

Leno usually has the winner on...most of the talk shows go to summer hiatus right around now, but I think Kris and Adam can still get on Ellen b4 it goes to summer repeats and Kris and Adam will probably be on Regis and the morning news shows.

Anyway, Leno may open the envelope when Kris is there because Simon wouldn't be back until it's time to tout America's Got Talent.

I'm not quite sure where to put this, so I will just put it here.

I didn't watch much of AI this season - the main reason being that I liked The Biggest Loser more, and I definitely liked TBL more than Kara.

Having only watched bits and pieces of the season, I will say that I didn't have a lot of knowledge about the contestants, other than the fact that Danny's wife had died. I didn't know Adam was gay. I didn't know Kris was married. I didn't know anything about Bikini Girl.

When I saw who won, I didn't really think it was a big upset. From what I have gathered (through not watching), Adam was in a very different league than any of the other singers. And while Adam was probably the person with the greatest voice ever on AI, AI was not really the place for Adam. I thought AI was more of a place for the unpolished. Adam would have been more suited for that Rock Star show.

When I voted for Kris (and I didn't even watch the Finale or vote in it), I voted for him because I liked what he did with the songs, I liked his voice. I didn't always care for Adam's voice, and I definitely didn't always like what he did with songs - namely "One."

I would tend to believe that the vote went down more along these lines than any other lines.

The bottom line is that kris cant sing and Adam can. Adam is the best singer EVER!! on American idol. i have to say the fans are just stupid an idiotic. there is no way no talent an boring bland Kris should have won over Adam. That show is a joke.

I've gotta sit by my Boo girl here. I too watched much more of TBL than I did AI.
DH however watched most of AI - until last night that is! LOL He thought 2 hours was much too long for a 30 second announcement of a winner.
About half way thru the season DH says to me one day, did you know Adam is gay? He just thought Adam was very theatrical! LOL
Apparently he heard something on one of the entertainment shows (he's a couch potato); but never touches a computer.

For me, I turned a bit off Adam when he butchered Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. I realize he was 'making it his own' but it just didn't do it for me. & I think a lot of country music fans may have felt the same way. After that tho, I wanted to see & hear more of his performances; wanted to see what he would do with other songs. And for the most part, I was impressed. I have never listened to a lot of hard rock. But Adam is talented and can take any kind of song and work it out.

Kris, OTOH, seems to me to be a more easy going talent. Will have a variety of music that will appeal to a more diversified group.

I was anticipating a Kris win; but would not have been surprised with Adam. Both are talented and with the right connections will make it.

Adam's sexuality was never directly addressed on the show. He has not directly made any statements to the media one way or the other. The press spent a lot of time on it, so missing all the magazine covers asking the question or Foxnews showing the pictures a lot was kinda hard to miss, at least for me.

Kris's wife was addressed in the getting to know you video packages and she attended most if not all of the performances, she certainly wasn't hidden, but they didn't make a big deal over here, but she did occasionally give good "oh no you didn't" facial reaction shots when Simon dissed him.

Bikini girl got cut in Hollywood, so you'd only know about her if you watched the auditions (or the coverage of the auditions). She got an inordinate amount of time in the auditions/Hollywood round. Time that I'd rather have been used for the people we vote on, but there is always one or two people they cut in Hollywood that gets huge amounts of time during the auditions.

Kris was IMO more likely to pick up fans of other singers that got cut along the way and didn't really do anything that would offend anyone so I'm not surprised he won in the end. He's cute enough and sings well enough that he's hard to vote against.

I do think the overpimping of Adam did more to get people to vote against him than his singing style, but he did deliberately go for more polarizing song choices and artistry and that can come back to bite you in the end, especially when up against a guy whose only fault is that he can be a little bland sometimes.

LAST EDITED ON 05-21-09 AT 11:38 AM (EST)

EDIT! Oops! my bad. I looked again above and saw he sang with Keith Urban. I missed that part.

I didn't catch every bit of the show last night, but something I noticed.

After Adam sang with KISS (which I thought he did really well - even if it's not my kind of music),
I was waiting for Kris to sing with some special group - or someone.
(like, why didn't Kris get to sing with L Richie instead of Gokey).

Did Kris sing with a group or individual on his own? Did I miss it?

When I didn't see anything, I thought either I missed it? or it was more pimping of Adam for the win.

They sent out an AP News Alert at 10:02 p.m. Wednesday night: "Adam Lambert has won the eighth season of "American Idol," beating fellow finalist Kris Allen."

They fixed it quickly to read: "CORRECTS: Kris Allen won the 8th season of "American Idol," beating finalist Adam Lambert."

Thanks Snidget and Geekboy and all the others who sustained these Idol threads, you did a great jobs and added to my enjoyment of the show. This was the first full season for me, in the past I've lost interest after the local tryouts, but Lambert's performances were so phenomenal that I found myself tuning in for the Hollywood shows too. I feel that I was richly rewarded by him for having done so.

There is really no question (to me at least) that Lambert is head and shoulders above the others, even Kris, in talent, artistry, showmanship, and major star potential. But I shouldn't complain since I didn't vote, and probably Lambert lost by one vote.

So it's my fault. Sorry Adam. But Kris seems like a nice fellow, and his progress, how much he improved, was really remarkable. Congratulations to him and all of Arkansas.
