"AI8 Top 4 Performance Show 5/5"

Posted by Snidget on 05-05-09 at 05:19 PM
Please keep all discussion of tonight's rock songs and duets on this thread until after the West Coast lowers their cellphones and for the old school, lighters.

Programming note: We have severe thunderstorms in the area, I may be shunted off to endless weather channel land at any time.

Between weather, rock music, duets and my migraine this may be a long night.

Oh, text only and no graphics, well other than these little guys who will be our mascots for the evening.

mjsbigblog"And the Idol stage is broken

mjsbigblog:After the big glass globe exploded, peeps were freaking out...Ryan tried to calm everyone out.

Apparantly, Ryan started the rehearsal, made his introductions, and Debbie Byrd, the stage manager fell down the 20 foot staircase. There’s broken glass and broken stage everywhere…One of the huge glass towers started popping . PHOTOS from TMZ inside After the big glass globe exploded, peeps were freaking out…Ryan tried to calm everyone down. The auditorium was evacuated. Ryan stayed with Byrd until the ambulance came. There will be no dress rehearsal today. First time ever. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Byrd..

With only 1/2 of the stage working, Rock Night sure will not be what it was intended to be. I am guessing that Idol may, in the future, start the dress rehearsal a couple of hours earlier. With such a tight schedule there is probably no time to get everything fixed - let alone to let the idols rehearse. Plus the phone in video’s that they show at the end of the show are always taken from the dress rehearsal.

Recap of last weeks bottom three.
New genre, new mentor, this is rock week.

This is American Idol.

Ryan coming down the stairs. Welcome to the show.
Coming to you very live from Hollywood.

We have had an unconventional day. Accident earlier, didn't end there.

Shot of the tower, look at the other tower. After an accident, then it collapsed just before dress rehearsal, but the show must go on without a proper run through.

Contestants will pair up and perform duets.
Hi to the judges.

He finally sang first. I pity the person who follows him, especially if it's Kris or Danny...........

This is his genre.

I tihnk we need a cold shower on standby for Kara tonight......

Kara was a bit over the top IMO. He was good but geeze....go rent a room already.

"RE: Adam Lambert"
Posted by MarkP on 05-05-09 at 07:14 PM
That sounded exactly like Mr. Plant....which leads me to question when do the judges want an imitation (as perfect as it may be - and this one was spot on) or something original? He may as well sing Welcome to the Jungle next because he could nail that one too.

"RE: Adam Lambert"
Posted by bullzeye on 05-05-09 at 07:30 PM
That's interesting - I thought he sounded quite different from Plant, though not so different that I didn't recognize the song.

I loved it.

I loved it too....but I loved it because I love Plant and to me the entire arrangement and vocals were as close as one can possibly get to doing this song justice. You don't mess with this song and he didn't at all.

I've been reading on another board that the contestants were not allowed to change up the arrangements of last night's songs.

So, after a season of the contestants being implored by the judges to "make it their own", they get handcuffed to the originals. Can it be any more blatant who AI wants to advance?

"RE: Adam Lambert"

Band on stage.
Carrying the mic stand around.
Last bit a capella. then band comes in for the glory note.

Nicely done.

Randy. This is the Adam I love, no one will ever think about Broadway you are a rock star tonight. You are a rock star waiting to happen, that was hot.

Kara. You are more than a Rock Star you are a Rock God. Should be making a rock album you got the vocals for it. Yes, Yes, Yes.

Paula. How can you improve a Led Zepplin song you are a whole lot of perfect.

Simon. That was a little understated. It could be a disaster but it was one of my favorite performance. No one can top that
now.

First time this band sung on Idol. Adam just glad they could clear it.

I see lightening.

Very nice.

Randy. You can sing your face of. I did not love this song choice for you. All at the top of your range, not that great for me.

Kara. The right choice for you. Piece of my heart more melody better.

She says she is always nervous.

Your personality you have taken some hits. I think you transform on that stage and you become larger than life. Just wanted to give you that thought.

Paula. You are fearless. Got the biopic.

Simon. The difference over eight weeks is staggering. Complete confidence, terrific vocal. Tried to hard to sound like the original. It was sound alike. Would have chosen a Queen song.

"RE: Allison Iraheta"

I am on the other end...I do not care for her voice. IMHO this was a weak safish performance. Maybe it was the lack of words . Last week was the first time I really liked her song. Some others were O.K. She has good stage presense though.

"RE: Allison Iraheta"

Well they did blend the voices together OK.
But it is kinda sad listening to them after Adam and Allison.

More thunder, hope I'll stay on.

Too much white boy soul in Danny's part for me.

Randy. First time we've had duets you guys compliment each other. The individual vocals were OK, but the harmonies were good.

Kara. This song does not compute. The sum of the parts were better. You couldn't hear yourself, pitchy moments. United and strong.

Paula. Great to introduce this. It was powerful and compelling, good job.

Simon. I don't know what to say. Who was better. Danny you were better than Kris.

Well, as a long time Styx fan, I was pretty sceptical, but I quite liked that. What surprises me most is that I think that was one of Danny's best performances, and I certainly didn't expect that! Kris seemed to struggle a bit with the range.

Hot? Smarmy, sweaty, beard stubble, looks like he needs a long hot shower and a good barber Hot?

GAH!

And he always looks like that. It wasn't purposefully done for "Rock" night. If it was, he would have worn something more appropriate.

But, beauty is in the eye...

I love this song. I love that he's playing guitar. I love that they let him sing "He shoot Coca-Cola!" I really liked this. Good job, little man.

ETA-boy judges have thrown him under the bus. So is this a reverse psych to save Kris?

"RE: Kris Allen"
Posted by zazzy on 05-05-09 at 07:44 PM
And they want Kris to go home.....

I hope his fan base blows them out of the water...he made the best of the situation.

Betcha Simon had the comment ready before the show started...and now he has left the door open to compliment Danny over Kris.

Kris also had the "disadvantage" of singing his songs back to back. Adam and Allison have had a nice long break before their duet.

And the way they gave Adam and Allison the pimp-duet spot--what a blatant move! Kudos, AI, for the plan and execution.

I love Slash - did I already say that?

But good lawdy, lawd - Kris needs to sip water before he sings.

I don't mean to belabour this point but there's that song "How To Save A Life" and I just can not listen to it because it sounds like crazy dry mouth.

"RE: Kris Allen"
Posted by Snidget on 05-05-09 at 07:42 PM
Playing guitar.

Liked this better than the duet, but not in the same league as Adam and Allison.

Randy. I know that you are not this kind of rock guy. I appreciate something you can still be yourself. I liked the vocals. I loved the guitar making it funky. I enjoyed it.

Kara. You are the softer side of rock. Not a great performance. Trying too hard, not the best song. There is more than what you delivered tonight.

Paula. Kinda risky, artistic delivery makes it your signature is all over it. Simon bothering Paula. It is your imprint that makes it compelling. Need a little more energy but you are deserving.

Simon. I actually didn't like it that much. Like eating ice for lunch. Leave you with nothing to remember afterward. A bit of a jam. I didn't believe anything will top Adam and I am right.

When I'm watching him perform I don't know where to look first, but his thighs are amazing. His mouth, too.

thighs. mmmhmm. I have trouble moving my eyes above the waist.

The story goes that the network wouldn't allow Elvis to be shown below the waist on the Ed Sullivan show because he drew so much attention to that area with his swivel hip moves...how far things have come!

Yes, indeedy. It's his eyes that do it for me, though (and I'm seriously jealous that he does his eye makeup so much better than me!)

Danny better be tight w/ his God, because the Rock Gods are going to smite his a$$ for that.

For years I thought "Dream On" was a Guess Who - Burton Cummings - song. Apart from the screaming chorus, the vocals on the original so don't sound like Steve Tyler.

I actually think Burton could kick ##### on this song.

But that's not what were here for, right?

This is my formative music era, and well... yeah, nice performance from Danny, but nothing like the original. I'll go with Simon on this one.

Even yet, nothing matches the first two performances.

Churchboy needs to become a layman and lay down on his death bed. That was bad in so many ways.

This is like hearing Mike McDonald sing Dream On.

Just no. The doot-doos were awful. Does NOT fit that song.

Steven Tyler just cringed.

Hah! How'd you like the Simon signage the producer showed to remind America of Simon's credibility?

"Simon Tell us what you really think" and "Simon King of Common Sense".

Ryan, nice work to slip in a reminder to America that Danny has never been in the bottom 3.

Pulling out all the pimpage tricks tonight, AI!

"RE: Danny solo"

And Danny made excuses after both songs tonight. I hate when he does that.

No true performer has to apologize.

That's the difference.

Me, too. And Kris had the look on his face that was the recognition of one who is about to get screwed before he got his comments.

Sigh. I couldn't get excited about tonight after I read that TV Guide article. Hope the double pimp duet is entertaining.

Me three or four or a thousand. So annoying. The iridescenty looking shirt though? Hot.

I didn't even read the article and I couldn't get excited.

I totally agree with you zazzy. This song has no place for "doot doots", an wow, talk about butchering the end. Once his ears stop bleeding, Steven Tyler is going to hunt him down.

We may have lost Snidge due to weather... I will try to be a snidget of what Snidge is as a host...

Randy - valiant effort, not really your genre

Kara - added an edge into your performance, but a little too far, don't really see you with these songs, liked risk and commends him for going for it

Paula - not sure it was the right song, asks crowd how many fans there are there, give an A++ for going for it

Simon - thought last note was like watching a horror movie, over the top, with Adam it works, with you no - still thinks he will be safe.

Doodle - Why didn't he sing Bob Seger?!?!

"Dream On" Aerosmith.

Slash says it is a tough song and has to get the scream at the end. It could go either way.

Okay in the growly part but the repetitive dream on and scream did not do it for me.

Randy. Clapping for himself. Once again I know this is not your genre, but I will give you one thing. It was alright. I'll give you an A+ for effort. Just not what you do.

Kara. You added more swagger and edge, took it a little too far. I don't see you on this type of song. Early Aerosmith. I like to see growth and risk and edge, but I commend you for taking chances.

Paula. This was tricky for you. You gotta go with the song you are drawn to. Not the right song, but I am a huge fan of yours. Works the audience. an A++ for going for ti.

Simon. The last note was like a horror movie. It was over the top and where I think with Adam it worked with you it didn't but I think you will be safe tonight.

I thought the tempo of the song was too slow, even though the name is Slow Ride. It was like it was slowed down for Allison.

Like how they are playing off each other.

Big hug at the end.

Randy. You guys Are our two seasoned rock stars in the house. SHould do a duet on your albums. The Bomb.

Kara. Rock God and Rock Goddess pushing each other to be better.

Paula. Perfect blend, perfect marriage. You guys should do a duet you are in sync with each other a beautiful thing.

Simon. Chanting in the audience. In the battle of the duets you win the show tonight. Completely different. Adam, you may have given this one a chance to stay in the competition.

Slow ride to the top, these two.

Compared to the other duet (if you wish to call them that), no comp.

This performances goes into the top 3 for the night. Dig it.

Great way to end for me. Love those two. And Adam didn't overshadow her, which I had to admit I was worried about. Arrangement was a little to slow, but that allowed them to play more in their lower ranges.

"RE: Adam and Allison Duet"
Posted by Snidget on 05-05-09 at 08:08 PM
Adam could have totally dominated that and overshadowed her and I'm clear he was working to make both of them great.

yep. He was working for her. Brother/sister or student/mentor or both? Probably both.

*MC welcomes Allison into the Shoppe*

Al - I just came in to check out some silver rings.

MC - I have a whole selection. Come on over here and check them out. Most are from the '30's.

Al - this is a great shop. So much stuff in here.

Adam - Hey, MC, have you met my little sis?

MC - Indeed. She's a sweetheart.

*MC gets distracted by Adam's striped pants.*

MC - ya know? Those stripes really enhance those thighs of yours.

Adam - You like?

MC - Oh yes, I like. A lot.

*MC pours Allison a big, tall glass of lemonade.*

MC - Here ya go sweetie. Why don't you go wind down on the swing. It's on the front porch. I'll join you a little later.

Al -What about Adam?

MC - He might need a little rest. But I'm sure he'll join us later.

*Night falls, the cool evening breeze wafts down the dirt road, cooling off the thin layer of sweat that gathers on the collarbones of Al and MC as they sit on the front porch.

*Adam pads out and grabs his hair in his fist and scrunches it*

Adam - Any chance of a tall glass of lemonade?

MC - Right here sweetie.

*MC pats the seat next to her on the old wooden steps.*

The Trio gaze at the stars and try and pick out the big dipper (*grin*).

Come Together - 1 - 81 - Safe
Dream On - 1 - 48 - Eliminated

Wonder how many songs the contestants hd to choose from? That is, how many did Danny and Kris have to choose from?

(Don't get me wrong, I want Danny outta there after the way he duetted with Kris last night and stunk up the joint with Dream On.)
