Please keep all sigpic free discussion of tonight's performances on this thread until the West Coast finishes asking why they have a whole show full of a singer they keep telling people not to touch and what number American Idol had to come up with so people don't dial the Idols-13 number. If you dial a number where they ask you for your credit card, it is not one of the official idol numbers.

Oh and we may find out the shocking twist tonight, or tomorrow. If we find out please keep all cheering or outrage on the East Coast Spoiler Thread until the West Coast finishes yawning.

PSA the close to but not quite idol numbers are Not Safe For Work.

Is it too much to hope that Tatiana will bust through security and attempt to sing?

Rather than risk going down the 'twining for you' road, I'd just like to point out you weigh about two and a half pounds. With fedora and trenchcoat.

And so it begins, my little nibbles of joy. The new Idol season! Innkeeper, service please!

Drink of the night

Chianti

Snack of the night

Veggie lasagna, with goat cheese, Parmesan cheese, zucchini, spinach, 3 kinds of peppers, mushrooms and so much more. Accompanied by a greek salad with feta, 2 kinds of olives, peppers, red onions, herbs, etc.

You can cook them without liver.

They were one of my Mom's favorite veggies.

"RE: Intro"

We still have 4 judges, darn.

Wow they are making them walk across the stage. Ryan has to walk down the long stairs.

Pimping the stage. 500 fans the best muscians who will do this job.

Randy, Gotta bring it hard. Everyone in this 13 could win this.

Kara. I think I will have to be tougher, a couple of these kids could end up on the radio.

Paula. Do not be afraid of using the stage, do not let the stage consume you.

Simon. Speaking of self consumption comment from Ryan. You can't forget the words. Got to prove you aren't swallowed up by this stage.

Here are our top 13

Lil
Scott
Danny
Michael
Jasmine
Kris
Allison
Anoop
Jorge
Megan
Adam
Matt
Alexis

Ryan tries to get a hero shot. Ryan actually gets a mold-covered hoagie shot.

And then the deep-voiced intro of the judges for no. apparent. reason. How much ego stroking can be done in two minutes? And who wanted it stroked so badly? Simon. Because he wanted to prove he has legs. And he knows how to use them.

The stupidity meter is already reading 10 and Paula hasn't spoken yet.

Paula Dancing.

Good singer, but mostly like the original with a couple of diva notes at the end.

Randy. This is the way we kick off season 8. He sang the whatever out of it. You put a whole new spin on it and made it new again.

Kara. It is perfect you come out. Everyone will be Uh-Oh I need to step up. I hope we get to hear you on the radio. The end note was sick.

Paula. The softness of your outfit, glam squad way to go. Such a great way to start the show. Like angels singing with your falsetto.

Simon. Thought it was good. It was a lazy song choice. Second half better than the first half and he hates what she is wearing.

Liked it - a lot! Very energetic, confident and has the vocals to take a song like this and put a new spin to it. Sort of mismatched outfit to be sure, but that's far more easily corrected than this lady's singing and entertainment abilities. Definite thumbs up.

At the piano.

A little shaky at the start but picks up midway through.

Kara. Has a question. Did you learn that this week. He says yes. I am so glad we finally get to see you with the piano. That wasn't the most obvious MJ song, but it was the hopeful message that you can deliver. Was it the most dyanmic, no, but you are true to yourself.

Paula. It is magical seeing the instrument at your fingertips. Lovely performance. The composer is in the audience and Paul thinks she's smiling. She looks for her, she loved it.

Simon. He apologizes that he didn't like it because no one knows it. Fine being artistic, just NOT ON THIS SHOW.

He didn't like the song. Didn't do you any favors.

Paula goes on about biggest selling song in Norway???

Randy. Liked the song, the performance was good, but felt safe. I want to see more sparks from you.

"RE: Scott MacIntyre"
Posted by Estee on 03-10-09 at 07:25 PM
Don't you love it when Simon criticizes contestants for doing songs that have been covered too often in one week, then turns around the next and hits them for doing songs which haven't been covered at all?

"RE: Scott MacIntyre"

"RE: Scott MacIntyre"
Posted by cahaya on 03-10-09 at 07:25 PM
Apparently at ease at the keyboard, it just didn't all fit together for me. And I think there were audio problems, as his voice was muted compared to the piano and the background. His performances in earlier weeks were better.

"RE: Scott MacIntyre"

From the AI site:

Kara DioGuardi: One of the industry's most sought after songwriters and producers, Kara DioGuardi's songs have appeared on more than 100 million records. They have been recorded by Grammy award-winning artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, and many more.

Over the last four years, she has been awarded 10 BMI Pop Awards for having written the most performed songs on radio. From her catalog of several hundred songs, over 264 have been released on major labels worldwide; and over 165 have appeared on multi-platinum selling albums. Kara co-owns Arthouse Entertainment, where she develops and mentors fellow hit writers, producers and artists.

Starts off slow.
Red glasses tonight, I think they are new.

Paula dancing, again.
Goes down to the judges table during the nyah nyahs.

Paula. Take it all in. The true mark of an artist is when you can hear someone even with your eyes closed and know who they are. You posess that gift. I think you are on your way to the finals.

Let the pimp fest begin.

Simon. Three contestants in. I thought the vocals were brilliant. You are one heck of a singer. However, maybe because you get over-excited the dancing was hideous.

Danny says it is hard to put in the moves.

I really like you tonight.

Randy. What is so amazing about you, what is a different side of you. When you got it you got it. I loved it all the dancing and the singing. The dancing was just passion.

Kara. It is dancing singing whatever, you have joy when you step on that stage. You should thank your parents for making you sing your homework.

Odd intonation on his Ohs and Ooohs. Otherwise a heck of a lot better than his semifinal from what I remember.

Simon. You are not the best singer, you made up for that with passion, heart and you gave it 110%. Great. Just wish we knew what you did for a living.

Randy. When we saw you returned to the R&B, and you are one of the best in this so far.

Kara. You really can sing, tonight showed me. This one showed you can hit those notes. What is great you are serious, you bring your game.

Paula. You have so many things going for you. Likeable, regular guy with talent. Picked an instinctually good for you. You colored it up and sounded lovely.

Randy. I had the pleasure of recording that with Mariah. You mixed the two versions together a bit. You did a pretty good job. It is a tough song to sing. IT wasn't that bad it was pretty good.

KAra. I'm always on the edge and she hit some of these notes. I keep thinking a 1/2 key down would have been more comfortable. You sold it and have great stage presence.

Paula. You have tremendous composure and poise. You had some bright moments, but some going into the chorus, where you were under at times, can't hear yourself?

Simon. Can't add much. You made a good attempt, a little bit robotic. You just gotta lighten up a little bit. Start acting your age. Trying to be a grown up.

So basically, they criticized her for all the same things they criticized her for in the past, and yet they are the ones who put her through to this round.

For about six weeks.

Her vocal control is -- intermittent. There were times when it seemed as if she didn't know which of two notes to go with, so she just tried to sing them both.

Her being a young novice showed here, but she clearly has strong vocal control and is capable of singing almost anything. But I can't imagine her doing a rousing, energetic song performance something like Lil Rounds did. Having said all that I liked watching and listening to her on stage.

So I think the church types are going to be flocking to Gokey and Kris will be at risk when head to head with him.

It isn't bad, just isn't anything special for me.

Kara. The girls love you. I am happy to see you with the guitar. It is a whole other side of you and helps you performance wise. A few notes that were off. This is what you should be doing, playing and singing. He spent a lot of time helping other contestants. Kara gives him props for that.

Paula. Simon messing with Paula. The reason why you help everyone, no one knows Michael's catalog better than you. It is adorable sexy with the guitar. I just want to remind people I love you too.

Simon. I didn't understand any of what Paula said. I don't know if that song suits the guitar. The vocals were OK, you are likable, not sure I'd bring the wife out so early. I'm kidding.

Randy. I love the wife and guitar. Interesting song choice. Very Jason Miraze.

Take away the guitar and the vocal performance was, well, average.

Add the guitar, and we see only - what? - about 3 or 4 chord changes the whole song, almost all of it on the same chord? Even Elvis moved around the fretboard more. And we hardly heard it.

Both as a guitarist and an AI fan, I wasn't impressed.

Taking the rock approach to the song.

Synchonized knee bends on the steps down to the judges.

The big screen on the floor is a bit odd.

Paula. Are you 16 or 17. She is 16 years old. It is mind boggling. You are a rock star, like doing it since you were two. Keep doing what you are doing, your hair looks great. Stay true to who you are.

Simon. It was a good performance, we know who you are. You are clear what kind of artist you want to be. You could lighten up a bit. She says it is not like I'm cutting myself.

Randy. If you got it, you just got it. You are born with it. You can sing. I think you can sing anything. I think you are one to watch.

Kara. Keep being a rocker girl, that distinguishes yourself. The vocals are ridiculous.

Digging into a long standing fear of the roving gangs of skateboarders in Chapel Hill.

Loses it a bit when singing when walking.

Paula and Simon going at it.

Paula. When you pick a song it is your gift to show the world. I think that song is untouchable. I love you though.

Simon. I will go a bit further. I thought it was horrible. There was no aggression, light weight and looked a bit stupid. Failing at trying to be MJ.

Randy. Wrong choice. It was very karaoke. You have more than that. Just not the kind of song you should be doing.

Kara. I gotta agree. The biggest problem we didnt' get to see you do any variation and I felt kind of disconnected. Your strength is your connection.

Randy. I've got mad love for you. The think is this isn't the song I would have chosen. Old Fashioned. Some Pitch points, but a nice upper range.

Kara. You are one of the most emotionally connected and I didn't feel it. Maybe She's out of my life.

Paula. I have mad love for you, I don't feel you were yourself. What drew you to this song. I had no choice. It is not my usual style. I think it fitted my voice than some other.

Puts in a Caw Caw at the end.

Kara. You have a way of putting your signature on everything you touch. Was it the most overwhelming vocals, no. Hope you do more to show your falsetto and range.

Paula. I love the quirky unique tone. I felt disconnected until the end with the inflection.

Simon. We like you, but what a stupid song choice. The vocals weren't good, the dancing was ridiculous. It was clumsy and awkward. Without all the hype they would think we went nuts.

Paula. Take it all in. I'm going to say this, never in the history have we ever had someone so comfortable and seasoned on that stage. I am transfixed on you. You have the whole package going on. We will see you to the end.

Simon. That was a totally different league to everything else we have seen. Whether it is your stage experience. MJ worked you have to be over the top and it was an original version. You are someone they will talk about.

Randy. Since Day One you are the most current and right now. Could sail straight to the top of the charts. You got it.

I'm with you on this one. Having seen no advance pimping, I didn't know him from...well, Adam. After aabout 20 seconds, I thought - well, this is the David Cox of this season. I am looking forward to more from him.

"RE: Adam Lambert"
Posted by byoffer on 03-10-09 at 09:07 PM
I assume you mean David Cook.

I don't see him as that. Cook seemed to come from nowhere to win. This guy needs to fight off the "I've already done a ton of stage productions, but now want to rock out". Having seen We Will Rock You, he would be a natural to continue there. I think he will have to show his relevance to modern music (take each theme and put his spin on it) to win the audience over. But he should have weeks to do this.

"RE: Adam Lambert"
Posted by bullzeye on 03-10-09 at 09:17 PM
Yes - meant David Cook, not Cox. One track mind these days

I understand what you are saying with respect to the "coming out of nowhere" factor. I have somwhat disadvantaged myself by not seeing any of this season until tonite and certainly didn't know about the We Will Rock You component. Loved that production btw. (Rocking out to Queen as I type).

Shrieky, theatrical.I wish I could get past his appearance and "practiced-ness". He is a great performer, but just too much,

Definitely the bravest, over the top and contemporary performance of the the night, WackoJacko-ish, even. Props for stepping up and cutting loose. Having said that, I'm not a huge fan of these kind of screamy vocals where I can hardly discern the lyrics, and I'm not nearly as impressed as the judges were. They seemed to go out of their way to majorly pimp him. Put out a record now and go to the top of the charts? Methinks maybe not.

And once again, I forget it while he was singing it.

Playing the piano.

I really don't like the breathy tone in his voice. At least he isn't vibratoing as bad as he cans sometimes.

Stop the falsetto, my windows just broke.

Odd way to end the song.

Randy. That was a good performance with pitch spot.

Kara, you are a talented guy.

Paula, Talented Sexy Blown Away

Simon. It was very good, difficult following Adam. Meat and Potatoes.

Speed Judging, must be running behind.

And I think we have our winner of the totally inexplicable positive judging of the evening.

I didn't mind it. I think he has a decent voice.

Wow is Paula on form or what tonite? Sheesh.

Fairly solid, pleasant performance, mixing active piano play, good vocals and camera catching. But do I think 'pleasant' songs when I think of Michael Jackson? He's safe.

I like him. He has a nice, smooth voice that I could totally imagine listening to.

I liked this performance much better then last weeks. If it weren't for the hat, I'd have hard time remembering who he was though.

Well they did tell her to dirty herself up.

Kara. You are back. Your a naughty girl and I liked it.
Paula. Naughty, watch your oversinging.
Simon. Over the top not as good as you thought it was.
Randy. Like the Attitude.

Her daughter's ready to host.

Not the worst performance of the night, but she put a little too much yelling into it. And she probably wants to kill the background singers -- with good reason.

Hmmm. Pick one:

1. David Crosby has a daughter on AI this season?
2. Courtney is on AI this season?

I'm guessing DWTS and AI had the same idea: bottom two perform one last time, judges decide who goes.

"Whoa!"
Posted by Devious Weasel on 03-10-09 at 09:02 PM
Are they giving the judges veto power over the audience vote? I could see letting the judges save someone and moving the double-elimination off a week, but it'd be tough to see them saying "this person is saved and that person goes".

Bout freakin time, if they are.

"RE: Whoa!"
Posted by bullzeye on 03-10-09 at 09:06 PM
I think that is exactly what they are doing - taking a page from SYTYCD and others. I agree - about time.

"RE: Whoa!"
Posted by DoodleBug on 03-11-09 at 12:10 PM
That's what I think too. After Simon let it "slip" during the wild card show that they are casting characters, I think the judges will be calling more of the shots as to who stays. They obviously need a cast that will fill arenas during the tour. I believe they will give us the bottom 3 (or maybe 4 tonight since 2 are leaving) and the judes decide who goes and who stays. I'm all for it.

"RE: Whoa!"
Posted by Snidget on 03-11-09 at 12:21 PM
I have mixed feelings.

If they do it every single week they can always save that one person America just doesn't want to vote for.

Why they think we'll buy their records if they shove them down our throats when half the time people won't buy the stuff from the people they actually like, I dunno.

What I could live with.

Each judge gets one veto for the season. Maybe to use up until we have a final 5 or something. That way they could save someone from the suprise boot, but they can't save the same person week after week after week for the whole season.

You really want the finale to have low ratings. Have one of the two people be someone America tried to vote out for the last dozen weeks or so but the judges wouldn't allow it.

"RE: Whoa!"
Posted by DoodleBug on 03-11-09 at 12:54 PM
I agree that they shouldn't decide every week, and I like your idea. I also like the SYTYCD format where they choose up to a point and then it's based solely on the votes after that. I think they want to control who is in the tour -which is only the top 10. Hopefully the twist won't extend much past that.

"RE: Whoa!"
Posted by Snidget on 03-11-09 at 01:01 PM
Of course there is the crazy idea of only putting people in the semi-finals that are tour worthy.

Crazy, I know.

Now I do understand sometimes you don't really know someone is impossible to work with until well into the season, but casting the top 24-36 so 95% is fodder with a few chosen ones and then getting upset by what America puts on the tour makes no sense to me.

I really think every year they could, if they wanted to, come up with 24 people or even 36 people that could win American Idol. The problem is they have a handful of people they want to work with and then have to cast the rest of the show to get voted out and maybe cover a few key demographics.

That is all about the ratings, not about having a good tour or getting record sales afterwards. They want the crazies so people will tune in, they want the fodder so that their favorite gets all the votes, but they don't want to live with the fall out of pulling that stunt over and over again.

All last night did for me was to remind me of just how incredible Adam really is - it was great to see his beaming face on my tv again. Unfortunately, it also reminded me of just how awful Megan really was. Shudder. I liked hearing Danny and Lil Rounds again, though. All in all - this was a pretty good year for Idol.

Did anyone else notice Matt's forehead mole was almost imperceptible back at that stage of the contest? I wonder if it was some other kind of growth...it just got bigger and more distracing as the season went along. At the end he just covered it with a hat all the time.

Does anyone else know anything about "the mole"?
