I'll bet Karl Rove was behind this...

Posted by Dizwiz on 06-27-05 at 04:19 PM
Actually, I'm hoping it had nothing to do with Karl Rove. That thread was a little tense; I'm hoping no one went overboard or anything. Legend has it that OT disappeared for a while once before. I'm hoping this is just no big deal.

The last time this happened Off Topic was taken away from the masses for not being able to play nicely.

I truly hope that has not happened again.

That's what I was thinking, Koko. I haven't been on much today, were things particularly nasty?

"RE: Where's OT?"

Not that I saw...

I mean, the Karl Rove thread had gotten pretty intense at one point, but nothing really other than that.

Today, not really. There were a few deep end threads, but they were moving along fairly civilly from what I was reading. Maybe I missed something.

Yeah, suddenly the threads locked and then OT vanished.

I hope there will be an explanatory notice posted here from the board administrators or moderators.

ETA: Maybe it's time to start on a story and/or a poem for the upcoming Story Competitions.

It has not been gone long.

However, I fear the worst. The Rove thread was a bit nasty but not like the last time OT got taken away. But we were given a warning that if it ever came to that again, OT = gone = permanent.

I am hoping that it is just a glitch with the site. I am sure Webby or AyaK will be along momentarily to let us know.

I participated in the Rove thread, and although there were certainly strong and competing viewpoints expressed, I didn't think it went overboard into nastiness or meanness. I am hoping that OT is down for maintenance or some such. I love OT so much, for both the fun and/or silly posts, and for the more serious discussions as well. For me, it's about the last place remaining where both sides of the political spectrum can still have a dialogue that doesn't degenerate into name-calling.

I've seen thresds that were a lot worse.

A lot.

ETA: But I don't ever remember a time when just one forum was gone - doesn't seem likely to be a random act.

Still, it's ironic that OT disappears 2 days after I decide to take a hiatus. Dang vast right-wing conspriracy.

"True...."
Posted by Esbea on 06-27-05 at 06:20 PM
there was a time when the threads were a lot worse, but not since OT was closed down last year. I can think of about 10 reasons why it would have been shut down today if thats what happened (and really, it DOES make the most sense). Refreshing ones knowledge of the guidelines is always a good idea, however, I feel the the sentiment might be a day late and a dollar short.

"RE: True...."
Posted by Dizwiz on 06-27-05 at 06:24 PM
And really, the guidelines aren't exactly rocket science. It boils down to "be nice, and if you disagree with someone, do so respectfully." We shouldn't need refreshers on that.

Well, my other guess is that Tech finally posted something without editing herself first and, as she predicted, set something on fire.

Beyond that, it's probably just a routine crash. The board didn't seem to be out of hand today (although I haven't been on the Rove thread in a while), and we haven't done anything that would warrant government investigation. At least, not more than we usually do.

"RE: Where's OT?"
Posted by Skiver on 06-27-05 at 06:08 PM
Actually, maybe we should nominate one of the other forums to hang out in until OT is back up. PIS is as good a place as any - and certainly better than the American Idol boards. We could start every thread with 'I'm not gay, but...' (or alternatively 'I'm not straight, but...') which would make them relevant to the board.

ETA: whether deliberate or not, maybe now is a good time for all of us to remind ourselves that Webby has provided us with a great playground and if it comes back up we might all just take another quick glance at the guidelines again. All of us, old and new. Just as a reminder of ALL of the rules around here. I know I am going to. Refresher courses are good.

Another fabulous Siggie from Cyg!

"psst..."
Posted by Wheezy on 06-27-05 at 09:38 PM

2 c. flour
3 egg yolks, lightly beaten
3 beaten egg whites
1 c. sugar (3/4 c. works good)
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups milk (I used 1 c. buttermilk, 1/2 c. lowfat milk)
8 slices of firm, homestyle bread

Measure flour and fluff with fork. Beat egg yolks until foamy in bowl. Add sugar and salt and stir with enthusiasm. Blend in flour. (at this point, you have a fairly dry, cakey mixture) Add milk to bring batter to consistency of pancakes. Fold in beaten egg whites. Dip bread in batter and coat well. Fry in peanut or sunflower oil heated to 360 degrees in electric fry pan. Batter will puff and bubble and turn golden brown, covering each side of bread with a light, crusty covering, much like a Mexican sopapilla. When both sides are browned, remove and drain well on paper towels. Keep warm and serve quickly with jam or berry syrup and crisp bacon. (I used a small amount of maple syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar--it's actually pretty tasty without anything added.)

I froze the leftovers, and we put them in the toaster for 2 rounds to re-heat (oven would be good too). They taste great that way as well.

"Back up... but very heavily loaded"
Posted by SurvivorBlows on 02-28-06 at 03:57 PM
Technically the server didn't crash -- there was an issue with the core forum data file going corrupt.

I've restored from a backup so other than the "last posting" dates and number of posts and topics figures on the CONFERENCES pages being outdated, things should be fine now -- however the server still remains under a very heavy post-Dancing with the Stars, post-Bachelor finale, post-Apprentice premiere, post-where the hell is the Skating With Celebrities finale load, so things might remain kinda slow.

Thanks for everyone's patience and understanding.

Thanks,
SB
