Please keep all sigpic free discussion of tonight's Epic Battle Of The Davids on this thread until the West Coast recovers from their nostalgia for the Battle of the Brians. A competition that had better developed glutes, and slightly fewer sequins than we shall see tonight.

If either David sings "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" I shall vote for them.

What would Brian Boitano do
If he was here right now,
He'd make a plan
And he'd follow through,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.

When Brian Boitano was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.

When Brian Boitano was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.

So what would Brian Boitano do
If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd kick an ##### or two,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.

Thanks, Snidget, for all you do! These threads are so fun to read, especially when travelling/missing the show. Thank you for being the thread host extraordinare!

And so for tonight, a fajita bar, with the special recipe grilled flank steak, multigrain tortillas, some guac and all the fixings (onions, peppers, tomatos, corn salsa, lettuce, etc). Cold Coronas with limes. I just need to step out and get some chips and salsa to go with everything. Hope I made enough!

So it comes down to David v David, without a Goliath to be heard.

They're going to attract different fan bases, with a teeny crusher and a rocker, so it'll be interesting to see who actually wins this thing.

And here we go...!

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2

"RE: Cook 1"
Posted by tamarama on 05-20-08 at 08:18 PM
I LOVE that he started this fairly spare...not out-of-the-gate trying to be U2.

And he sounds like he's in really good voice - I was a little worried about fatigue. He's got really good handle on his head voice.

Very nice. Part of me, however, kinda wishes this were the last song so the producers would have given the full choir/lights treatment. Still, LOVED it.

(was there any doubt I'd love it? at least I didn't make any gross comments about wanting to get all kissy-kissy or anything.)

Randy. I'm going to call you DC because we are boys. It was a great way to start off. I liked the note at the end it was hot baby.

Paula. You may not have found what you are looking for but we found David Cook and you have arrived.

Simon. I can see you looked very tense and emotional and taking all of that together I thought it was phenomenal.

I read something that a medic plane had been donated for this trip.

I am ROFL that Randy does not know what year it is. Did he do that to help Paula out in the screw up department?

What did Simon's comment mean about "very tense very emotional and I understand why"? Is there news about DC's brother?

ETA: Just read the comments above and I didn't see the shot of David's mom and his brother.

"RE: Archuleta 1"
Posted by tamarama on 05-20-08 at 08:23 PM
OK, he sounds good. His eye are mostly open, though still squinting too much. He doesn't have as good a command of his upper range yet...it sounds a little flat - not tonally, just less resonant.

Good energy, he stepped that up. He's still nowhere near as commanding as DC.

And while Cookie may look tense, Archie looks terrified.

Yikes. Randy's BS is back. Not that it wasn't good, but sheesh. Take a cold shower dude.

Starts sitting on the steps, gets up for the chorus and walks forward.

Better than he's been doing recently IMO.

Randy. It doesn't matter what happens, you gotta know one thing that was one of the best performances of the season you picked the right time to peak, crazy vocals.

Paula has chills. The sun is never going to go down on you, you bring out so much sunshine through your singing. That was a beautiful stunning performance.

Simon. Very easy to get over-excited tonight. Last week you were OK, tonight was arguably the best you've done so far. Hold on, taking everything into account, Round 1 to Archuleta.

Randy: He called DC hot but DA molten hot again. One of the best performances of the whole season you picked the right time to peak that was flawless and crazy molten hot, crazy vocals.

Paula: beautiful stunning performance....

Simon: LOL the gonna be honest with you comment....arguably the best you have done so far....taking everything into account round 1 DA...

Did you all catch the "no matter what happens" that Randy said?

Wow. THAT was a craponation song? He should win soley for making that rawk a little bit.

DC picked well, good hook, an actual melody. And he was yummy again. Mmmm, guitar.

(my theory, Simon gave round 1 to Archie because he knew that DA can't do THAT to his own craponation song, so DC will take rounds 2 & 3)

"made the most of what you had" Yeah, Simon, we know these songs are crap.

"RE: Cook 2"
Posted by Snidget on 05-20-08 at 08:32 PM
Playing guitar, rocking it out.

I could bop down the road listening to this on the radio.
Not as drecky as a lot of the finalists songs have been.

Randy. Nokia mention. What made it work is your voice you can hit the notes.

Paula. A song in your heart and a guitar in your hands and we are mesmerized by it.

Simon. Bit of a light-weight. Made the most of what you have, it didn't feel like a winning moment to me. Just an opinion. Good news is we have a 3rd song.

"RE: Cook 2"
Posted by Sues on 05-20-08 at 08:35 PM
I thought the refrain was a bit corny...so I'm with Simon on that. Hooowwwweva! His voice is again perfection for me...has a little bit of everything and although they have said he's 'tense', I sort of got a sense that he's a bit relaxed...comfortable in his skin. He's gonna make a great star....

"RE: Cook 2"
Posted by cahaya on 05-20-08 at 08:36 PM
This is David Cook as he wants to be, not as Simon wants him to be. Very strong vocals and energetic, but shout-y at times to me, and not inspiring. Have to agree with Simon, a lightweight performance.

"RE: Cook 2"
Posted by zazzy on 05-20-08 at 09:15 PM
Interesting that they won't end the show with the coronation song which has happened the last few seasons. I can recall Jordin, Taylor, Carrie, Fantasia ending with their coronation songs.

Guess they learned from earlier seasons to let them select one that suits them.

DC:

Randy: beginning of round 2...singing face off...hitting notes...nice, nice

Paula...song in your heart guitar in your hand...blah blah ... fall in love with it

Simon: bit of a lightweight...supposed to be a winning song and did not feel like a winning moment.

(Gag....AI...stop with the song contest. Is it worth the few thou you make from the entry fees?)

I guess we are not going to get the acapella song I was hoping for this season...from DC.

Who dressed these guys? They are wearing bland, bland stuff. Tan/taupe/grey stuff.

Gee, he picks the ballady thing.

Reminds me of Calypso by John Denver with the swayiness of it.
Melisma all over the place.

Randy. Once again the song I wasn't crazy about it. You are so in the zone and you could sing the phone book.

Paula. Another heart felt performance, doesn't matter what you sing, why you are in the spot you we in.

Simon, loves the egotistical lyric. Chose the better song, Round 2 goes to Archie.

The judges are playing the drinking game...they have to be, he should have sung the phone book it would have been better than that dreck.

Judges dialing back their enthusiam for DA....

Simon: DA chose better song...round two DA... huh.

DA gives that fakey astonished look. Why can't he just look freakin' delighted? Why the fakey look? It is the same one he has given all season.

*sigh* I feel like I have to qualify all my Archie comments with "the kid sings well" And he does.

But yawn. This was the more typical craponation crap. And he didn't do anything new or interesting with it.

Cookie picked the better song, and made it sound like a pop hit instead of a Christian Pop hit.

Shut up Randy. Just. Shut. Up.

I disagree with Simon -- that wasn't the better song. AND WHAT??!! Round two to DA too?

I'm confused, and grumpy.

Great voice, but I could fall asleep listening to that tempo and watching those closed eyes of his.

I hope it's the Podunk, Kansas (pop. 120) phone book he's singing, because I wouldn't make it past 'Archuleta' in any other city (or even small town) phone book.

Aw, he's all teared up.

Randy. One of the cool things about you is that you are showing people a lot of different sides of David Cook. I love Collective Soul and this is the kind of record you could make and get by with.

Paula. I look up at you and you are standing in your truth and delivering songs with integrity, I applaud you.

Simon. I just want to say publicly you are one of the nicest most sincere contestants we've had. It was a beautiful song, it was the wrong song for the night, you should have sung Billy Jean or Hello.

"RE: Cook 3"

Why doesn't DC just get up and sing "I don't want to be your puppet"?

This song imo is not well known. I liked it, though, but I could not sing it after hearing it. Simon looks odd.

DC tears...

Glad Randy let DC bask in the applause for a bit (like he has DA for a lot of the season).

Randy...nice, sensitive side of DC...mentions Collective Soul....this is the kind of record you could make...very nice, very nice

Paula...I looked at you on the stage standing in your truth and you are delivering unbelievable songs with integrity and originality and I applaud you.

Simon....I'll say publically....you are the nicest most sincere blah blah blah...beautiful song but completely and utterly wrong song choice for you....should have sung BJ or Hello. Wrong song for competition.

DC to Simon: this whole thing is a progression why do something I have already done (a dig at DA?). I understand what you are saying tho.

(I just want to say that if Michael Johns were in the finale he would have killed it but it seems that DC is being somewhat Michael - like tonight by not playing the AI game their way and doing it his way. Simon's frustrated face says it all, lol.)

"RE: Cook 3"

Or did Archie's dad threaten him?

"RE: Cook 3"
Posted by tamarama on 05-20-08 at 08:53 PM
hmmm...love the, well, everything. He looks great, sounds yummy, excellent song choice, and the king of the build is about to expolde, right? Wow. I'm surprised he didn't go huge, but that's ok, because it was ABSOFRAKKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. BEAUTIFUL.

Archie hasn't even heard of half the emotions that DC puts into his performance.

BEAUTIFUL!

(now poor Archie's going to follow that with a reprise?)

I disagree with Simon's comment about doing a reprise, but did he sound a little choked up? And - I may be nuts - but I think Simon had shed a tear - check out under his eyes while he's talking.

Nice performance that shows another side of him. But he'd been better off ending with a bang of his own rather than a sweet ballad note like that we'd expect from David A.

"RE: Cook 3"

I agree. It was a good song but not a winning one. And I don't think it matters if it's a reprise or not. Even if he'd sung it earlier in the season, I would've said it was a poor song choice.

>>But he'd been better off ending with a bang of his own rather than a sweet ballad note like that we'd expect from David A.<<

I have a feeling he did that because he knew Archie was doing Imagine -- his programming brain prevented him from doing a big bang before an ending ballad.

I still loved it though, and don't think he should have done a reprise.

OK, I know this is widely considered to be Archie's "moment" of the season...but I hated this the first time, and I'm hating it this time too.

DO NOT mess with the melody on this song boy!

Didn't they slam someone for messing with "Imagine" in a past season? Blake maybe? But yet they loved Archie's noodling on this. I still hate it. Don't hate the kid, but I hate this performance.

I'm SOOO very disappointed to be hearing all this Archie pimping! I really had hoped the tide had changed, or at least slowed down.

This kid's got a great voice. Yes, indeed. But all his songs come out sounding almost the same, all sweet and syrupy. By the time you listen to three or more songs, you're going into insulin shock.

Any album by David A is going to be very predictable.

And although I don't like David Cook any better, and his voice may not be as good, at least he's got variety.

I am not just saying this because I love David Cook--this is truly me being objective and sincere:

David A. has a bright future on Broadway or Adult Contemporary charts--there is NO WAY that he will be a commercial pop success. None. He may have the Claymate crowd redux pulling for him, but there is just about zilch chance of him being a Daughtry or Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson success. Did he sing more than one uptempo song the whole contest?

If DA wins--and I expect that he will--then it is just further proof that this show IS a joke when it comes to finding true current pop/rock/MTV talent. Seriously--can anyone imagine an Archie video on MTV or even VH1??? No way.

In complete agreement -- the producer's MUST know that they need David Cook - I would hope they're not that stupid.

I'm just so confused about Simon telling anyone with a mic that Cook should win...and then tonight he joined Randy on the Archu-choochoo.

Yeah, what's up with that? He goes on Ellen and says that DC will win.

Did they do that so DA fans will go to bed and not stay up to vote?

I swore off voting after MJ got booted off. Not buying into the voting anymore. Producer discretion and all that.

Did ALW help DA more than DC this week? It seemed like ALW was mentoring DA.

Oh well. I have been losing interest ever since MJ was booted. Trying to remember he'll sing something in a group number tomorrow night--so maybe I'll hear a line or two.

Ruben...didn't he already sing this on the show earlier this season?

Yawn.

It's the offical recorded "buh-bye" song after they announce the loser of the week, so yes, we have heard it lots of times already. This time we hear it live. Ugh.

I'm confused and a little bit disgusted. I thought they both performed well and the blatent pimp of Archie was over-the-top. He didn't score a knock-out by a long shot and David Cook has way more star appeal. They were pretty equal so why did they throw their weight behind Archie? Simon's comments were especially whacked - they sounded more scripted than usual to me. Pissed me off enough so that this cougar is dialing her fingers off too!

I couldn't disagree more. If DA wins it's because AI is exactly the show it was meant to be. DA was the best he's ever been tonight and he was head and shoulders above DC. It was obvious to me how much DA wanted it. I've felt from the beginning that DA has more heart than any of the other contestants. Sure he has a long way to go, but that's what being the idol is all about--how much you can grow. I think it's important to consider just how young this kid is and how much he's done. It's AI at it 's best, IMO. I hope he wins, not because he was better than DC, but because he deserves it 100%.

"RE: 10:15 pm update"
Posted by Snidget on 05-20-08 at 10:37 PM
Hard to say.

There could have been a push for Archuleta to win as they feel he is more likely to do what he is told. I think Cook will be more likely to put his foot down about things and do stuff his way rather than whatever the producers want.

Now I do think Archuleta probably did win the night as much as it pains me to say that. He did what he does really well. Cook showed several signs, but he did seem to be singing what he wanted rather than focusing on what songs should I sing to win. Although in his place I'd do the same damn thing. Fine everyone decided that Archie's winning anyway, so why not go out singing what one wants to sing even if that isn't the "winning songs".

Now Cook has been doing well on DialIdol for the last several weeks, so he has a fan base. So hard to know if they were trying to ##### off his fan base or they were trying to pump up Archuleta's with he obviously won so you have to vote for him. I just think they probably figured Archies fans are a lot more rabid than Cookies. I think they forgot that Cougars can be pretty vicious when they have a darn good reason to be.

So the gap is growing...but there's only been about a half hour of voting for the west coast, right?

(runs off to see if she can find trends of the west coast's preferences)

I've been voting nearly constantly since 8:14 Central time. Been getting thru for Cookie about once every ten votes. 7 min to go!

According to my phone account, I managed 769 texts - if only I had dinner before the voting started! I got through a handful of voice-line votes too, but I figured the texts were better for me.

So the East Coast & Midwest are done...maybe we did it. I hope.
