Please keep all discussion of tonight's elimination on this thread until the West Coast sees it for themselves.

Prepare for the filler fest.

Programming note DVR programming thinks the show starts 2 minutes before the hour starts, so you may miss important introductory filler.

No Sig-Pics, just in case, who knows why Idol's forget the words or choose the oddest arrangements.

Hmmmm... one hour to evict one contestant? The filler had better be good.

Yeah, keep hoping, it is usually only mediocre, and you will be flipping the channel frequently.

We start early for the Horton hears a Who promo.
OK enough of that, cue the credits.

Lets see if the sound guys on AI are any better than the sound guys on BB?

29 million votes. Let's hear it for the judges. Jim Carrey is there in a Horton Costume. Ryan asks what is with the costume. He says a part sticks with him for a while. It wouldn't be a Fox Film would it? Jim replies that Ryan pointed out the Elephant in the room.

OK onto other pimpage as Jim says he is going on a rampage.

Change of next weeks theme. More Lennon McCartney song book and onto the dreaded

GROUP SING!

Looks like Chik got a prominent pimp spot in that group sing, most of which was done in threes.

Was that a Sanjaya I spotted in the crowd at the end of the groupsync I mean group sink, I mean group sing.

Yes that was him, and with facial hair, I think, what is the world coming to.

Must have been Sanjaya. I just asked the same question!

Yep Sanjaya and his sister when I rechecked the DVR during the commercial.

More Lennon-McCartney next week?

Why? They didn't butcher enough of it this week?

There was a lot of Michael Johns in that groupsucksing.

"RE: Seg 1"

It going to be slim song pickings next week. They've already used up 12 of the 25 songs they had to choose from.

"RE: Seg 1"
Posted by Snidget on 03-13-08 at 08:26 AM
I think the producers limited it to 25, not the owners of the Songbook.

I suspect they'll add a few more songs to chose from.

"RE: Seg 1"

Then the producers are idiots. But that's just stating the obvious isn't it.

Looking for the Bottom 3, down go the lights.

Carly Michael Jason and Syesha please stand up.

Carly you are safe.
Michael you are safe.
Jason you connected with the audience, you are safe.
Syesha is in the bottom three, join Ryan on the stage.

Randy if she leaves us tonight. Wrong Choice, Paula agrees. Simon say yes she should be in the bottom three.

And she gets to sing her song again.

Oh.My.Heck. Three may be your last singing sing off of death?!?!?!?!?

And no hamster cage to run to.

"RE: Seg 2.1 some results"

Whoah, isn't this a format change? It looks like the bottom three will sing what might be their swan song, starting with this one. They have make their case on stage even tonight, as they're already on the bottom of the totem pole.

Not a memorable song by Syesha, either. With that performance, she won't win new admirers even if she makes it through.

So, we are going to have to hear the loser sing off of doom . . . twice?

Eee.

I agree that Syesha should be in the bottom three but I don't think she should go home.

Ford Commercial. "The Distance"

Back to the results. Syesha in the bottom three, in case you forgot.

Tape of how Idol has touched the lives of the contestants, idols at the Horton Hears a Who premiere. In case you forgot which Fox film they are pimping this week.

Phone in just a minute for people to talk.

But first some results

Chikezie Amanda Kristy and David Cook stand.

Chikezie, will you come down here a second...you're not sweatin' you're safe.
Amanda you are safe (is that a smile?)
David Cook you are safe.

Kristy wants to know where the microphone is.
Kristy grab the microphone, you are in the bottom three.

"Filler Recap"
Posted by frodis on 03-12-08 at 08:37 PM
You know people are clamboring for info on the filler!

Cross-pimping the Jim Carrey movie, the Idols are on the red carpet wearing elephant ears.

Kristy Lee Cook talks about how different her life is since having come from a teeny tiny dinky little life and hitting the big city. (Don't worry, Kristy. You'll have your plane ticket back to dinkyville soon.)

David Archuleta wets himself after meeting Jim Carrey. I hope someone brought the Bissell for the red carpet.

They meet Steve Carell and ooh and aah.

Amanda tries to gush about meeting the lead singer of REO Speedwagon and the other Idols pretend to know who he is.

All the contesants there fro the calls.

Paige age 12 Penn. Jason, if you could be a judge who would it be.
Paula, the one he is most unlike or a hybrid with Randy.

Line 3. Ronnie from NC for the judges. Auditioned 6 times, any advice for next season.
Simon. Get another job
Paula. Keep singing right straight to Simon. No not sing right now.

Line 4 John from LA. For Ryan and Simon, when you are you two going to duke it out on stage. Ryan says load in the mud, I'm Ready.

Lets not take 5 it dropped

Line 6 Tracy from NC. Which country do you believe has the best talent. America or England. 2 part answer. American singers have the most talent, however on the judging panel it is the Brits.

Back to music.

There is a song from George Harrison, with Kat McPhee singing. David Foster on the piano. Something in the way she/he moves.

They also discriminated age-wise, in ignoring the only older person who called in. At least til they flipped the page and tried to redeem it by taking one question from a 40 year old.

They should either sort the questions behind screen, or take them in order. I for one don't want Ryan Seacrest making the decision on who gets to be heard.

Could that dress be any shorter?! I find her incredibly annoying.

"RE: Seg 4"
Posted by frodis on 03-12-08 at 08:47 PM
Katharine McPhee borrowed her dress from the Kristy Lee Cook shiny wardrobe closet.

I really like this song, and I think she's performing it well.

However.

I don't understand why she has to change she to he. Does it really matter that much? Would it bother people too much if she sang she instead of he?

"RE: Seg 4"
Posted by ulalame on 03-13-08 at 02:32 AM
I loved Kat McPhee's song! Usually I skip the filler on results shows like this, but I stopped to listen to her. She's got a great voice, esp. in comparison to the current contestants. At this stage, nobody can hold a candle to her.

As for the change in the lyrics, I'm kind of torn. On the one hand, I like it when they stick to the original, but there is an awkwardness in our P.C. America when a person sings a song directed at the wrong sex, so I can understand changing simply the her to him. It's been famously done before and is nothing new.

"RE: Seg 4"
Posted by cahaya on 03-12-08 at 08:49 PM
Nice performance by Kat, I was enchanted by it. Liked that 'fine-tuning' comment tossed Simon's way.

Jay Hernandez from the Fab Five, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

"RE: Seg 5"
Posted by memzoo48 on 03-12-08 at 09:05 PM
David H. was surprised to hear Kristy was safe. I think the sleaze factor caught up with him, combined with Kristy getting the country vote. She was without doubt the most awful performance of the night. David was not great, but he was far from the worst.

"RE: Seg 5"
Posted by ulalame on 03-13-08 at 02:36 AM
I had David Hernandez pegged to go 11th rather than 12th (had Chikieze pegged for tonight but he surprised us!), so wasn't surprised that David went tonight over Kristy. Kristy's song sucked last night, but so did David H.'s, and David's sucked in a worse way. His sucked due to his performance, which was Cruise-ship over the top. Her's sucked due to the song arrangement, which was horrible, but her performance was good and her voice sounded nice.

"Seg 6"
Posted by Snidget on 03-12-08 at 09:03 PM
Judges did they get it right. Randy says it is right. Paula thinks her head is on her shoulders. She thinks this is the strongest bottom three ever. It will be difficult every week. She does think America pretty much got it right. Simon thinks America got it spot on.

Syesha is sent back to safety.

Kristy vs David H. after 29 million votes. Kristy is safe to butcher again and David H leaves us tonight.

I totally agree. I'll be muting Kristy next week, just in case. I might not survive another fiasco like last night.

"RE: Seg 6"
Posted by ulalame on 03-13-08 at 02:41 AM
Totally disagree. Kristy's got a nice voice, she just needs to pick the right song and I wouldn't be surprised if she stuck around a couple more weeks. Her song choice, and song arrangements, has been horrendous so far, but I could see her being awesome with the right song.

David H. on the other hand, had already at least one good week, but still couldn't muster the votes to stay on the show. I think it's because he was way too cabaret for A.I., and there was NO chance he'd ever have an "Idol Moment." Good that he's gone now.

"My take"
Posted by anotherkim on 03-12-08 at 09:37 PM
As horrific as a country version of Eight Days a Week is (seriously, WHO thought that up?), she showed glimmers of talent. She CAN sing country. There is no doubt in my mind that she could put out a single in Nashville tomorrow. Hell, if Kellie Pickler can do it, she should be golden. Her performance was rushed and just flat out strange, but she is marketable.

David, on the other hand, is not marketable, IMO. He came across as a cheesy lounge singer more often than not--70s week excluded--and now that he's been outed as a male dancer in a men's club, he has absolutely zilch chance of becoming a radio success.

IMO, the right cut was made. I don't expect Kristy to last much longer, but it was David's time to go. And Sayesha isn't long for this contest either.

Well said. Lets face it, she is probably more marketable than half these people (please tell me who will be rushing to buy David A. cds?). I turned on CMT yesterday and low and behold a Phil Stacey video...enough said there. Also, like it or not if Kristy got enough votes to stay after that Beatles disaster, she has a pretty decent chance of staying around a while if she can get back to how she performed the week before on the Journey song.

"RE: My take"
Posted by ulalame on 03-13-08 at 02:47 AM
Agree. See my comments above, but I think there's a reason beyond her blondness that the voting public kept Kristy around over David. If she was the one who picked the arrangement on 8 Days A Week, she might have a bad musical sense, and that will be exposed in future weeks, but I'm glad she got another chance. The reason her song was so bad was not because of her singing or personality, it was the tempo, which was all-off for that particular song. If she picks a bad song/arrangement next week, I'll stop defending her, but I'd love to see her perform in a song well-suited to her talents.

"My thoughts"
Posted by geekboy on 03-13-08 at 08:53 AM
I tuned in just in time to see the "bottom three" announced, and I have to admit I wasn't all that shocked. I was pleased to see America get it right and have Syesha in the bottom three, but i was a bit surprised that Ramiele wasn't there. In my mind, there really was a bottom 5, or even 6, this week.

Yes, I was disappointed to see David leave. Many of you know that early on he was a favorite, but i can understand why he was voted out. No, there wasn't any conspiracy by the Idol producers. He did a very cheesy performance, and usually the cheese will get you cut. He can sing, but he has a past, and he overdid it on Tuesday.

As for another Beatles week, i think its a brilliant idea.

As for another Beatles week, i think its a brilliant idea.

I strongly disagree. Mostly because I don't like the Beatles, but also because Beatles songs don't suit all the singers, and doing back-to-back really hurts these singers.

They want themes to force variety on the singers, and those who can modernize an old song (like David Cook did) should do very well. But I get tired of all these 30+ year old songs each week, when the contestants are all under 30!

"RE: My thoughts"
Posted by nailbone on 03-13-08 at 11:04 AM
I agree. They only had 25 songs to choose from, and they took 12 of those this week. Are they going to get more next week, or only the 13 leftovers? It could be a MAJOR disaster.

"RE: My thoughts"
Posted by Snidget on 03-13-08 at 11:22 AM
I'm guessing, but I assume the 25 wasn't "the only ones released by the owners of the songbook" but the "25 the producers of American Idol thought American Idol viewers would vote for".

So I'm assuming it isn't just the 13 left overs, but that they will probably add some more songs that the producers deem "likeable" by the American public.

Nigel had a problem last year (based on how I read his interviews) when things were too open ended so this year it seems they are limiting songs to what they think are singable and something America would like.

I guess he was squirming over Chris Sligh's choice of songs...didn't Chris sing something that was way out of the mainstream?

Blake sang some lesser known stuff...lesser known to the Idol producers and judges, that is!

They must have done an analysis and decided that Melinda could have been #2 if they had reigned in Blake a little more on song choice. How dare he be so contemporary!

ITA that they must be letting them choose from a list of more than 13 songs. This week was supposed to have been "early Beatles" although they stretched that definiton to include a 1970's Beatles song, Let It Be, which is very late Beatles. Maybe some of the contestants wanted a shot at late Beatles songs, too.

LOL, Geekboy!

As for the Beatles next week, I was kind of surprised. I had heard rumors of themes from the top 100 itunes songs or songs from the year they were born (which would be largely another 80's theme), but I wonder if clearance or pimpage opportunities or agendas had anything to do with repeating the Beatles so soon.

On one hand I will enjoy hearing the wider range of Beatles songs...but on the other hand I don't want there to be any klunkers so waiting for the top 6 or 5 would have been nice. There are some I would really like to hear, like Norwegian Wood.

Chances are the AI recordings of Beatles songs will sell well...so repeating may be a really good decision for many reasons.

BTW, Michael's full length recording of Across the Universe sounds really good. Off to listen to the rest now.

I don't understand what people see in Michael. The one and only time I was impressed with him was when he sang "Bohemian Rhapsody" in Hollywood. I think everything since has been boring and, quite honestly, it all sounds the same to me. I did not like Tuesday's performance at all.

Unfortunately if it doesn't show up on performance night does it matter in this competition?

If I have to go listen to all his other stuff to "get" him then I'm not going to vote for him.

I'm not saying he can't sing, he just hasn't brought the "Wow", for me, to the competition, yet. (and audition rounds don't count for much for me anymore, they may get you forgiven for a round or two during the semifinals, but if it doesn't show up after that, then it doesn't help you anymore)

If he doesn't "bring it" soon he may be booted earlier than he should be. I understand you gotta peak at the right time, but he seems to be "coasting" to me and that will only last so long.

Ramiele is another that feels like they are "coasting" along to me. She keeps doing the same sort of performance over and over and eventually she'll run out of cute, just like Michael will run out of rock-ish dude. Coasting may keep some fans who like what you are coasting on, but it is not the way to win, IMO. Your mileage may vary.

ETA: Jason and David A are getting close to being "coasters" for me as well. Amanda could be, but at least she is starting to have some fun again.

Again, and i won't go into much more, Michael - TO ME - has become boring. His Fleetwood Mac performance sounded to me just like his Doors peformance and just like the Beatles performance. I suspect he just doens't have the ability - like Brooke does - to interpret and really "get into" each song. Enough about him.

David A. seems very coached on a limited variety of songs. The fact that he totally botched his Beatles song, which he admitted to not being familiar with, speaks volumes to me. He then goes and "covers" Stevie doing the Beatles. His "Imagine" performance was again a cover of the Eva Cassidy version. check it out on youtube.

Ramiele - again TO ME - seems a bit naive in terms of her musical knowledge. Like Michael, she seems to not be able to interpret, but even moreso than Michael. I suspect she's sung a very limited number of genres/styles. Her audition blew me away, but nothing since has done that.

Just my $0.02 on a few of the idols.

I looked back over comments made about Jordin last year at the top 8 girls week and top 12 week and most people here had her at "mid pack" at best. Someone even said she was a back up if their top divas didn't work out.

My point? I think AI picks someone who will "grow" over the 12 weeks...and they build the interest in them, just like they have frontrunners. What is cool about this year is unlike last year, there are several people to enjoy in this contest..it is somewhat like season 5 in that regard. I think when we get to the top 6 there will be hard core fans for each of the top 6.

Listening to Michael's pre-idol stuff, and reflecting on his Bohemian Rhapsody performance tells me that he has the "something" we will enjoy seeing as the show unfolds. In my estimation he will be one of those who grows over the next few weeks and his buzz will build (or re-build). If I'm wrong, then there are plenty of other people I enjoy as well--David C, Jason C, Brooke, etc.

And David C and Brooke also have pre-idol stuff out there, too. (and Carly, and Kristy, and probably someone else, too, this season is chock full of people who have made a run at the industry so far). I have seen David C's vids and just learned about Brooke's 2005 album tonight so I haven't listened to hers yet. I'm curious to see if anyone this season who hasn't had much industry time can make it to the top 4. Right now I am doubting it.

I expect Carly to grow on people as well. I think she already is, with her performance of "Come Together".

So, knowing Michael has delivered in the past gives me interest for his future performances. If he doesn't deliver, it will have been one huge opportunity wasted. More people know the idols names than their own Congressmen or the head of the Supreme Court!
